Seahawks rookie cornerback Tariq Woolen: ‘Speed is my greatest asset’

Seattle Seahawks rookie cornerback Tariq Woolen, who had an impressive mock game at Lumen Field, believes speed is his greatest asset.

The Seattle Seahawks held their annual mock game at Lumen Field on Saturday and both the starters and the rookies were on full display. One defensive player who really shined was cornerback Tariq Woolen.

God, he’s a physical specimen,” quarterback Geno Smith said after the scrimmage. “I mean, he’s amazing. He’s taller than me and a lot faster than I am. So, when you’re trying to throw passes on a guy like that, you really can see his wingspan. He can make a ton of plays and there aren’t many guys who can run step for step with DK Metcalf and Marquise Goodwin, but he’s one of them.”

Woolen was selected by Seattle in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL draft out of UTSA, where he began his college career as a wide receiver. His quickness put him on the map at the scouting combine, where he ran a 4.26-second 40-yard dash.

“Really, I just feel like speed is my greatest asset,” Woolen told reporters. “I ran track my whole life. I played football my whole life. Throughout the whole process of just getting here and getting faster and throughout the whole Combine process, you always train for 40-yard dashes and stuff like that. I just feel like all that speed has carried over throughout the years and now I can show it to the world and show it to my teammates too.

“It’s pretty cool being the fast guy on the team and being able to run with an Olympian like Marquise Goodwin and a stallion like DK Metcalf so it feels good to be able to keep up with those guys.”

The Seahawks have a walk-through Sunday afternoon before an off-day on Monday.

Seahawks rookie cornerback Tre Brown has been aggressive on the field

Seattle Seahawks rookie cornerback Tre Brown has been aggressive on the field throughout the team’s mock game and training camp this summer.

The Seattle Seahawks selected cornerback Tre Brown in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Oklahoma and he’s already in the mix to compete. Seattle is still looking to finalize its cornerback situation, letting the battle for the starters play out in training camp this summer.

Brown got his chance to show his stuff in the Seahawks’ mock game on Sunday and coach Pete Carroll was asked about his performance after the scrimmage.

“He hasn’t had enough turns yet, just opportunities to show the tough situations that he can get in and all that,” Carroll told reporters. “We’re trying to create those as much as possible. We have a number of corners that we’re looking at, so the opportunities have been spread over a number of guys, so I don’t have good enough information yet; it’s going to take a little bit on that evaluation.”

Brown already plans to play with a chip on his shoulder his rookie year, coming in at one of the shortest corners at 5-foot-10. And even though Carroll seems to have an affinity for the taller players at the position, he’s keeping a close eye on Brown.

“But how I’m doing it, I’m looking all of his plays, which I keep adding to the plays that he’s had, as well as all the guys, are there’s plays in there that are bad plays, misreads?” Carroll continued. “He doesn’t have that. He’s a smart football player. He’s been aggressive.”

Brown and the rest of the Seahawks return to practice Tuesday after an off day Monday.

Receivers John Ursua, Phillip Dorsett II sat out mock game with injuries

Two Seattle Seahawks wide receivers, John Ursua and Phillip Dorsett II, sat out Wednesday’s mock game with minor injuries.

The Seattle Seahawks were without a couple of wide receivers during Wednesday’s mock game, the second scrimmage of the summer at CenturyLink Field.

Wideouts John Ursua (hamstring) and Phillip Dorsett II (foot) are both battling minor injuries.

“Johnny just tweaked his hammy a little bit, it’s really slight, but enough to hold him out, not push it the very next day,” coach Pete Carroll said during his press conference.

Dorsett, on the other hand, has missed the last few practices and could be out for a couple more.

“Phillip’s got a sore foot that he’s had in and out for quite some time, and it just acted up,” Carroll explained. “So we have to rest him for a bit and see if we can get him back. He said he feels really good today after just a couple of days. It might be the kind of situation we’ve got to monitor and see what it takes to keep him feeling good, because he has had it for a while.”

Seattle has the day off on Thursday but resumes practice Friday at the VMAC.

New acquisitions have given real boost to Seahawks’ defense

The new acquisitions over the offseason have given a real boost to the Seattle Seahawks’ first-team defense heading into the 2020 season.

The Seahawks made a concerted effort over the offseason to improve the defense as a whole. Seattle added a number of new players to the mix, including safety Jamal Adams, cornerback Quinton Dunbar and former Seahawks Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa.

Coach Pete Carroll noticed an immediate difference in the unit during the team’s second mock game of the summer.

“I’m really excited about these guys,” Carroll said Wednesday after the scrimmage. “We’ve had an infusion of spirit and leadership and playmaking from Bruce and Jamal coming in, and I’m anxious to see the effect that Quinton Dunbar can have also just to add to what we already have. There’s an energy about this group, they’re really excited about playing together. We’ve got to get good. We’ve got to get our stuff right, get our assignments down, our calls and our adjustments down and all of that.

“So that’s what we’re racing for by the opener to get that done so we can play really good clean football and cut these guys loose and let them go.”

The star of the day was second-year player, Marquise Blair, who is battling for the nickel defensive back spot this season. He certainly made his case on the field with two interceptions on the day.

“Marquise has been a noticeable change – I mean look at the day he had today – but he has been a noticeable change playing the nickel spot,” Carroll continued. “So we really feel like we’ve boosted this group, as well as guys just getting a little better every year like they do. We have very high expectations that we’re going to play a lot of good football.”

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll: ‘It’s the season of protests’

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll called 2020 “the season of protests” and will continue to educate his players on justice and equality.

The Seattle Seahawks were in the middle of their mock game Wednesday afternoon when the news broke that the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks did not take the court ahead of their playoff game against the Orlando Magic in protest of the recent shooting of Jacob Blake.

Coach Pete Carroll was asked after the scrimmage whether or not it was likely the Seahawks or any other NFL team would do the same this season.

“You know, anything is possible,” Carroll said. “I mentioned to the players this is the year – it’s the protest season. It’s the season of protests.”

“So we’ll handle ourselves as we do and but this is a protest that doesn’t have an end to it until all the problems go away and we solves the issues and stuff,” Carroll explained. “So we are going to do our part and continue to work to stay actively involved and continue to stay in touch with the situations that are going on by staying on the topics.

“And with it, just in hopes that we can be there to help and support where we can.”

The Seahawks have an off day on Thursday before resuming practice Friday afternoon.

Seahawks safety Jamal Adams slices hand slicing strawberries

Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams sliced his hand recently while slicing strawberries requiring a number of stitches be put in place.

Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams was seen with a larger wrap on his hand over the last few days that had a number of people wondering whether or not he had recently sustained some sort of injury.

Adams was held out of Wednesday’s mock game but coach Pete Carroll had an answer . . . one that no one had really been expecting.

“Jamal had a domestic accident,” Carroll said following the scrimmage. “He cut his finger slicing some strawberries and he hit his finger. He had to have a few stitches.”

Carroll didn’t really provide any sort of firm timeline for Adam’s return, except that he’ll need to wait to have his stitches removed.

“We kept him out not to make him have to use that thing, in case you were wondering,” Carroll continued. “So it’s a very minor situation. Easy for me to say . . . he almost cut his finger off.”

The Seahawks have an off day Thursday but return to the practice field at the VMAC on Friday.

Branden Jackson returns to Seahawks facility after injury scare

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Branden Jackson was able to return to the team facility after the injury scare during the scrimmage on Saturday.

The Seattle Seahawks got a little bit of good news over the last few days with the return of defensive end Branden Jackson. Jackson was carted off the field and taken away in an ambulance on Saturday after losing consciousness following a collision with tackle Cedric Ogbuehi.

Coach Pete Carroll was able to provide an update on Jackson’s situation during his Zoom press conference with reporters.

“He’s back in the building and with us today, was at meetings today,” Carroll said. “We’ve got to check him out and make sure that we understand that nothing was really injured – he’s just recovering from such a big smack, you know that he got nailed with so we’ll see what that means.”

Carroll did say that Jackson will be further evaluated to make sure there is no structural damage and will likely sit out practice for at least the next couple of days.

Rookie running back DeeJay Dallas ‘ahead of where expected’ in air game

Seattle Seahawks rookie running back DeeJay Dallas is also excelling in the receiving game and on special teams this summer.

[jwplayer QZopmiKN]

The Seahawks drafted another running back this spring and DeeJay Dallas is already starting to fit in nicely on Seattle’s roster. After getting some extra reps this camp with Chris Carson and Rashaad Penny out, Dallas got the chance to showcase what he’s learned during the team’s mock game over the weekend.

“He’s done a really nice job,” coach Pete Carroll said after the scrimmage. “He’s a real natural athlete. He’s played quarterback in his background, he’s been a receiver. At the running back spot, he brings some talent and background running routes and getting out of the backfield and feeling really comfortable in situations getting down the field and catching and all. So he’s done a nice job for us to kind of establish that we can count on him already, he has those talents. He’s right in it. He’s getting involved in special teams, that’s going to be a big factor for him.”

But it isn’t so much his ball-carrying skills that are getting him noticed as much as his ability to excel in the receiving game.

“But I’m surprised that it’s been so clear that he fits in in the throwing game,” Carroll acknowledged. “Not that he hasn’t run the ball well, he’s done fine there too, but he’s probably ahead of where we would have expected him in the throwing game.”

Any extra talents will go a long way for Dallas and the other rookies hoping to make the final roster this season.
