Demario Davis returns to Saints OTA’s, but 14 others miss Tuesday practice

Demario Davis returned to Saints OTA’s, but 14 others missed Tuesday’s voluntary practice session:

Let’s start with the good news: Pro Bowl linebacker Demario Davis returned to the New Orleans Saints’ voluntary practice on Tuesday, the first of a three-day series of training sessions this week (and one of the few practice dates open to the media). He was joined by special teams ace J.T. Gray, who was also absent last week when the Saints practiced in front of the media for the first time as a team this spring.

But 14 other players were missing from the voluntary session. They’ll have more opportunities to report for work before mandatory practices begin later in June, and some players are sidelined because of injuries, so we shouldn’t make too much of it. Personal and other professional obligations can get in the way. And because the media has such limited access this time of the year, they could just be visiting on a day with abnormally high absentees.

What’s important is that these players have all been in communication with the coaching staff and plan on being available once they’re needed. For some of their younger teammates, veterans stepping aside is a good thing because it opens up much-needed practice reps.

Here’s a quick look at the list:

Alvin Kamara misses Wednesday practice session, still expected to play vs. Eagles

Alvin Kamara missed Wednesday’s Saints practice session due to a personal issue, but he is still expected to play against the Eagles on Sunday:

This might be worth watching. The New Orleans Saints hit the practice field on Wednesday without top running back Alvin Kamara, who head coach Dennis Allen said was excused due to a personal issue. However, NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that Kamara is still expected to be available for Sunday’s game with the Philadelphia Eagles. So this absence shouldn’t be a lasting problem, though the Saints did list him on their Wednesday injury report with a quadriceps ailment.

New Orleans’ running backs rotation hasn’t exactly inspired much confidence lately. Veteran back David Johnson (12 carries for 24 yards) has gotten the nod over recent waiver wire pickup Eno Benjamin as the No. 2 runner behind Kamara, with special teams ace Dwayne Washington out of action for several weeks with recurring cluster migraines. Mark Ingram II is on injured reserve for the rest of the regular season due to a knee injury, leaving Derrick Gore as their only remaining option on the practice squad.

This absence probably wasn’t related to Kamara’s Las Vegas assault case. His attorneys are scheduled to meet in court for a hearing on Jan. 23, 2023, but Kamara himself isn’t required to attend until at least the trial date on March 1, 2023.

Saints take a cautious approach in first full-contact scrimmage

The New Orleans Saints gave many veteran players the day off in their first full-contact scrimmage at training camp, some due to injuries.

The New Orleans Saints have been practicing in pads and helmets for two weeks, so on Friday they raised the tempo with their first full-contact session in an organized scrimmage. But they weren’t at full strength, with a number of starters and role players sitting out. The full list, per reporters on the scene:

  • DE Marcus Davenport
  • FS Malcolm Jenkins
  • LB Zack Baun
  • LB Anthony Chickillo
  • OL Andrus Peat
  • OL Cesar Ruiz
  • OL Ryan Ramczyk
  • RB Alvin Kamara
  • RB Ty Montgomery

You’ll notice that includes three of the five starting offensive linemen, as well as Kamara, the team’s second-best pass target, and each of their top two rookie draft picks.

Some of those players are managing injuries; Saints coach Sean Payton said that Ruiz and Jenkins are expected to return to action soon, while Kamara missed time earlier this week with a stomach virus. Montgomery was rattled on a hit in Thursday’s practice but was able to finish the session. Baun exited practice back on Monday, having pulled up after chasing down Taysom Hill. Ramczyk has been getting a lot of veteran’s rest during camp after undergoing a knee scope early in the offseason.

So this probably isn’t a lot to worry about. None of these injury situations appear to be serious, and the Saints still have more than two weeks to go until their season opener. Many of these players are known quantities, so it makes sense to spare them from unnecessary hits in a full-contact practice session. But the Saints are notorious when it comes to keeping medical details close to their vest, so stay tuned for updates.
