Per report, former Longhorn Savion Red is heading to Nevada

Former Texas signee out of the 2022 class has found a new home.

Former Texas Longhorns 2022 signee Savion Red has found his new home after entering the transfer portal on Apr. 22.

He was likely going to find himself out of the rotation in 2024 with C.J. Baxter, Jaydon Blue, and Tre Wisner. The wide receiver room in which he once played was stocked up as well with a plethora of transfers led by former Alabama Crimson Tide wideout Isaiah Bond.

Per Joe Cook of Inside Texas, former Longhorns wide receiver/running back will join the Nevada football team. He will join a familiar face, Jeff Choate who left Texas after the season to become the Wolf Pack’s head coach. Red could have a real shot to take over the starting running back role. Pat Garwo III also transferred into the program after five seasons with Boston College, where he rushed for 1,912 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Heading to Reno might be the best option for Red to see the field in the immediate future.

Projected Nevada Wolf Pack running back depth chart

Red joins a room that also welcomes Garwo. Sean Dollars returns for his second season in Reno after leading Nevada in rushing attempts, yards, and touchdowns. He also added 18 receptions out of the backfield for 77 yards.

  • Sean Dollars (former Oregon Ducks transfer)
  • Savion Red (Texas Longhorns transfer)
  • Pat Garwo III (Boston College Eagles transfer)

Savion Red’s 2024 season outlook

Red will join the Nevada football team which will have an influx of new talent, including former Texas defensive back Kitan Crawford. As far as his position, Red will likely head into a fall camp battle with returning lead rusher Dollars and fellow transfer Garwo.

WATCH: Texas RB Savion Red excites the Longhorns at practice

Savion Red is taking to the running back spot well.

Second-year Longhorn Savion Red has made the position switch from wide receiver to running back this offseason.

Red played sparingly in his true freshman season, flashing some high upside at times with the ball in his hands. With Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson NFL bound along with some talented freshman wideouts joining the squad, Red has found a new home in the Texas backfield.

Red can profile as that Roschon Johnson type, short yardage back for the Longhorns. He holds a stocky frame with plus pass-catching with speed, working as a nice change of pace to Jonathan Brooks and Keilan Robinson.

Steve Sarkisian has praised Red for his willingness to change positions. It appears Red is taking to his new position well.

Watch Red slice through the Texas defense and score a touchdown in this clip from spring practice. He had the entire team excited including Bijan Robinson who was in attendance.

WATCH: Highlight plays shed light on Texas breakout players for 2023

Savion Red’s beast stiff arm, Quinn Ewers’ dime to Ja’Tavion Sanders and more.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has his team looking sharp this spring. That is, if this highlight reel is any indication.

There’s a great deal to unpack with a handful of players flashing on the field. Upperclassmen linebacker David Gbenda, wide receiver Casey Cain and backup quarterback Maalik Murphy see plenty of camera time in the featured reels. It gives credence to the notion that Casey Cain brings some of his best football in practices.

The three biggest takeaways for me involve three players who could have breakout seasons in 2023. First, Quinn Ewers looks incredibly sharp in the limited action we’re able to watch. Ewers makes an effortless throw to Ja’Tavion Sanders on the run, hitting Sanders on a corner route in stride.

The second realization is that edge rusher Barryn Sorrell is huge. Sorrell looks like the freshman iteration of Texas defensive tackle Alfred Collins.

The most enlightening highlight sees Texas running back Savion Red displacing second year edge Justice Finkley with a powerful stiff arm. Short as it may be, the highlight gives an idea of why the team thinks so highly of Red heading into the season.

Texas Football: What we want to see in the spring game

What to watch in the annual Orange-White game on April 15.

Spring football is in full force across college football. And while there’s not much we can glean from the sessions, we would still like to see progress in a few areas.

Some are of the belief that spring practices are wholly unimportant. For the cemented starter that might be true. For those pushing for starting roles, the sessions could have significant bearing on depth chart positioning.

Sophomore offensive lineman Cole Hutson won a starting spot last spring. Hutson won a starting bid in a room that included five-star lineman DJ Campbell and highly regarded freshmen Neto Umeozulu, Malik Agbo, and Cam Williams among others. 2023 early enrollees will look to follow Hutson’s blueprint by putting in the work prior to fall camp.

Here’s a look at what we want to see from Texas’ annual Orange-White game on April 15.

LOOK: Texas RB Savion Red looks the part this spring

Some might have written off Savion Red at running back too soon.

Texas has a loaded running back room. Savion Red could not care less. Continue reading “LOOK: Texas RB Savion Red looks the part this spring”

Report: Texas sophomore Savion Red moving to running back

Savion Red is making a position change this offseason.

Texas wide receiver Savion Red is making a position change this offseason. Inside Texas reports Red is moving from wideout to running back ahead of spring practice.

Red saw the field sparingly as a true freshman in 2022, hauling in six catches for 34 yards. The move to running back potentially opens the door for Red to create a role next season.

Texas’ wide receiver room got much more crowded this offseason with the additions of Georgia transfer AD Mitchell and three blue-chip incoming freshmen. Snaps at running back are up for grabs as Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson are off to the NFL.

Red brings a similar style of play as Roschon Johnson. Two physical athletes who did not start their careers at running back. Red can help fill Johnson’s short-yardage role with his strong, stocky frame.

Red is no stranger to running the football. He thrived as a wildcat quarterback in high school, running for nearly 1,400 yards and 20 touchdowns his senior season at Grand Prairie.

Five players to watch in Texas’ season opener vs. UL Monroe

Keep an eye on these Longhorns on Saturday.

The 2022 season provides a fresh start for Steve Sarkisian and the Texas program. The Longhorns hope to leave 2021’s disappointments in the past with an improved year this fall.

Texas will have the look of a much different team in Saturday’s opener vs. UL Monroe. The Longhorns welcome many new faces to the roster via the transfer portal and high school recruiting ranks.

The Longhorns do return superstar running back Bijan Robinson and wide receiver Xavier Worthy back to lead the offense again this season. The dynamic duo established themselves as some of the best playmakers in the country a year ago.

The staff hopes the influx of talent, along with the returning studs can push Texas into the Big 12 Conference championship race.

Sarkisian feels good about the development of his team over the offseason and feels like the culture is at an “all-time high” in his Texas tenure.

Here are five Longhorns to keep an eye on in their Week 1 matchup with UL Monroe.

Texas Football: Three true freshmen who are turning heads in fall camp

These freshmen look like they can contribute early on.

The first year of the Steve Sarkisian era did not go according to plan for the Longhorns. Texas took a late-season tumble, failing to qualify for a bowl game with a mere 5-7 record.

Texas oversaw a roster revamp over the offseason using both the transfer portal and recruiting ranks to improve the talent on the team. The Longhorns signed the No. 5 overall class in the 2022 cycle.

Adding depth and talent to the trenches was a major point of emphasis for the Texas staff. The Longhorns bolstered the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball with five-star offensive lineman Kelvin Banks and Devon Campbell, along with four-star edge rushers Justice Finkley and J’Mond Tapp.

The incoming freshman class is loaded with talented players ready to compete for playing time early on. Last season Xavier Worthy broke out as a freshman All-American for the Horns.

Here are three true freshmen who have already begun to turn heads in fall camp looking to replicate that success.
