Clemson gets commitment from top-ranked 2024 linebacker

247Sports has Brown ranked No. 1 among linebackers in the class of 2024

Off-ball linebackers may not be as vital as they used to be. However, it never hurts to score an elite talent at any position. Clemson can attest to that, as yesterday they got a commitment from Jefferson (Ga.) five-star linebacker Sammy Brown.

Brown (6-foot-2, 230 pounds) announced the news on his Twitter account with the following graphic and statement

via @sammybrown_

“For the last two and a half years, I have been blessed with the privilege of building relationships with the finest men in college football. I’ve taken dozens of visits to great campuses across the country, spent many nights in conversation, and watched some incredible football games along the way. To all of you that have shared your lives with me, I am forever grateful and I will always cherish the opportunities you afforded me. Specifically to the head coaches and staffs, I appreciate everything y’all have done for me through this whole process. To choose one school from among the final 5 was a nearly impossible task as they are all top notch programs headed by incredible men. My family and I have spent many months in prayer, seeking God’s will for my life. With that being said, I know God’s plan for my life takes me to Clemson, South Carolina!! 100% COMMITTED TO TIGERS”

247Sports has Brown ranked No. 1 among linebackers in the class of 2024, as well as first overall in the state of Georgia and No. 5 nationally. He also had offers from 27 other programs, including Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Clemson’s class of 2024 now has nine hard commits and ranks No. 17 in the nation.

Ohio State misses out on 2024 Georgia 5-star linebacker

The 5-star has made his commitment but not to Ohio State #GoBucks

[autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] and a few other schools thought they had a legit chance at landing 5-star Georgia linebacker [autotag]Sammy Brown[/autotag] when he scheduled a number of official visits.

The Buckeyes were supposed to host the 14th overall player and 2nd ranked linebacker according to the 247Sports composite, later this month. That visit is up in the air now after Brown verbally committed to Clemson on Monday afternoon.

The 6-foot, 2-inch and 230 pound hard-hitter had just visited the Tigers over the weekend and it looks like that was the only trip that Brown needed to take. Undoubtably, most schools that believed they had a chance at the 5-star will continue to recruit him.

The Buckeyes currently have two verbal commits on defense in their 2024 recruiting class, both players being linebackers but Brown was still a priority recruit for Ohio State.

Latest 247Sports rankings highlights prospects Oklahoma is pushing for

A number of 2024 targets of the Oklahoma Sooners were featured in the latest Top247 update from 247Sports.

For the first time since the end of November, 247Sports updated its 2024 rankings ahead of a busy spring and summer for the next crop of prospects.

Oklahoma is looking to assemble another top-five recruiting class to follow up on their 2023 one that finished as a fourth-ranked class in the 247Sports composite. In looking at these new 247Sports Top247 rankings, there are quite a few targets of the Sooners featured throughout the top 247 prospects in the country.

Among the 32 prospects 247Sports has given five-star rankings, names like [autotag]Williams Nwaneri[/autotag], [autotag]David Stone[/autotag], [autotag]Bryant Wesco[/autotag], [autotag]Sammy Brown[/autotag], [autotag]Kobe Black[/autotag], and [autotag]Eddrick Houston[/autotag] have visited or have been linked to the Oklahoma Sooners.

Nwaneri and Stone are priority prospects for Oklahoma, and if the Sooners landed just one, let alone both, you could already pencil them in as the jewels of the class. Nwaneri is third best prospect in the Top247, while Stone comes in at No. 7 in the update. Bryant Wesco, Oklahoma’s top wide receiver target, moved up to No. 9.

Black and Houston have visited Oklahoma since the start of 2023 and came out of the visits with good things to say about the Sooners’ coaching staff. Sammy Brown, an elite linebacker from the state of Georgia, has Oklahoma on his radar for a visit. He’ll likely be in Norman in April. A good impression there could give Oklahoma their window to sneak in and grab an official visit from Bown.

Plenty of Sooner targets showed up elsewhere in the rankings. Wide receiver [autotag]Zion Kearney[/autotag] slotted in at No. 89, and offensive tackle [autotag]Bennett Warren[/autotag] is ranked No. 82. Safety prospect [autotag]Aaron Flowers[/autotag] is at No. 109, while DL [autotag]Nigel Smith[/autotag] is right behind him at 110. Oklahoma leads in the race for Flowers and Smith.

One shocking drop is Sooners’ priority quarterback prospect Michael Hawkins is no longer rated a four-star by 247Sports. He’s now a three-star and sits as the No. 26 QB in the nation. Hawkins transferred to Frisco Emerson high school in December but has been showing out in the 7-on-7 circuit this spring.

Two prospects that Oklahoma currently leads for, RB [autotag]Caden Durham[/autotag] and LB [autotag]Payton Pierce[/autotag], remain the No. 160 and 164 prospects, respectively.

This spring and summer will allow these prospects to improve their rankings by participating in camps, 7 v 7 tournaments, and other recruiting events. For Oklahoma, the race to earn commitments from these talented young players is a long one. Where they are now in these rankings doesn’t reflect where they will end up when their high school careers conclude in December.

Oklahoma set to receive a visit from nation’s top linebacker, Sammy Brown

Oklahoma will receive an April visit from the top linebacker in the class of 2024, Sammy Brown.

Brent Venables’ reputation is still revered amongst recruits despite the 6-7 season Oklahoma experienced in 2022.

There’s no better proof than by looking at the two recruiting classes Oklahoma has brought in with Venables. In 2022, he finished with the No. 8 recruiting class in the cycle after just two months on the job. In 2023, the Sooners landed the No. 4 class in his first year on the recruiting trail for the Sooners.

Enter Sammy Brown, the nation’s No. 1 linebacker in the 2024 class and No. 2 player in the state of Georgia.

Brown spoke with 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong regarding his recruitment. He doesn’t know where else he’ll visit this spring and summer, but there’s one place he’s sure of; The University of Oklahoma.

“We’re definitely going to take that trip,” Brown’s father, Mike, tells 247Sports.

With Oklahoma slated to get an unofficial visit in April during his spring break, it solidifies the Sooners still have a puncher’s chance for the top 10 ten prospect.

Venables and Brown have had a long-standing relationship. Brown went to football camp with Clemson when he was coming up as a younger player. The Tigers’ defensive staff, then led by Brent Venables, extended an offer. Brown received an offer from Oklahoma, and Venables and Ted Roof have been on top of this recruitment.

Sammy’s father Mike believes that the younger Brown knows who his top five are and could see that list coming out in the near future. Along with Oklahoma’s recruiting efforts, the other contenders look to be Clemson, Georgia, and Ohio State.

Oklahoma will have to turn up the pressure, especially with the back-to-back national champions in the race. They have the recent national success and the development pipeline working in tandem. Being the hometown team certainly works in the Bulldogs favor as well.  It’s an enticing sell, and one Oklahoma will have to overcome in order to land one of the nation’s best defenders.

Will the move to the SEC and the relationship with Venables be enough to sway Brown away from Georgia and Clemson to don Crimson and Cream? Receiving that unofficial visit will give Oklahoma significant momentum to stay in the hunt.

Nation’s No. 1 LB gives latest, expects to visit Clemson this weekend

The Clemson Insider caught up with a priority Clemson target, ranked as the nation’s No. 1 linebacker in the 2024 class, to get the latest on his recruitment.

Jefferson (Ga.) five-star Sammy Brown, who collected Clemson’s first 2024 offer back in March, continues to stay in contact with head coach Dabo Swinney and defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Wes Goodwin.

“I’ve been talking pretty consistently with Coach Goodwin, really just about hunting and school and what not,” Brown told TCI. “I get on the phone with Coach Swinney once every two weeks or so. It’s good to catch up with them and talk about stuff other than football.”

As Brown keeps in touch with the coaches, he has also been keeping up with the Tigers this season and likes what he’s seen from them on the defensive side of the ball especially.

“I thought that the defense has played lights out all year,” he said. “They’ve had a couple slip-ups here and there, but they’re playing good football on a consistent basis. I’ve been very impressed.”

As far as his recruitment goes, Brown – who boasts more than two dozen scholarship offers – feels Clemson is among the schools recruiting him most heavily at this point in the process.

“It’s been pretty consistent,” he said. “Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Ohio State have been probably the hardest.”

Brown has been to Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia and Tennessee this season.

“We planned on (visiting) Oklahoma this (past) weekend but couldn’t make it because of prices,” he said.

The 6-foot-2, 227-pound junior most recently visited Death Valley for the Oct. 1 NC State game after attending the Sept. 10 game vs. Furman, where both of his parents went to college.

Brown told TCI that he and his family have considered a return trip to Clemson for this weekend’s game against South Carolina.

We checked in with Brown again earlier this week to ask whether they’ll be back in The Valley on Saturday.

“I’m pretty sure we are,” he said.

Brown is rated as a five-star prospect and ranked as the nation’s No. 1 linebacker in the 2024 class by both 247Sports and the 247Sports Composite. 247Sports considers him the No. 6 overall prospect in his class regardless of position, while he is the No. 12 overall prospect in his class according to the composite rankings.
