Raiders release former first round OL DJ Fluker

New Raiders GM Tom Telesco has cut DJ Fluker who was his first ever draft pick as a GM

We’re still ten days yet before the Raiders re-convene for their first workouts of this offseason. That happens April 15. And yet today they cut ties with offensive lineman DJ Fluker.

Back in 2013, the former Alabama tackle was the 11th overall pick by the Chargers. In fact, he was Tom Telesco’s first top pick as GM of the Chargers. Now as Raiders GM, he’s cleaning out the closet.

Fluker is the second former Telesco first round pick to be released this offseason. Jerry Tillery was released last month.

Fluker was drafted as the answer at right tackle for the Chargers. That lasted two seasons before they moved him inside to guard, didn’t pick up his fifth-year option and let him walk after his rookie contract was up.

He has bounced around a lot since then. A season with the Giants, two in Seattle, and last appearing in an NFL game in 2020 for the Ravens. He was added to the Raiders practice squad late last season and now, without so much as an offseason workout, he’s out.

Former Alabama OT DJ Fluker signs with Las Vegas Raiders

Former Alabama offensive tackle DJ Fluker has signed with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Former Alabama offensive tackle DJ Fluker has signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. The news was first confirmed by Bleacher Report’s NFL insider, Jordan Schultz.

Fluker last played in the NFL in 2021 as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad.

In total, the Alabama native has played for six organizations in 11 years. Fluker previously played for the Los Angeles Chargers, New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, Jaguars, and the Raiders.

Fluker has worked effortlessly to return to the NFL. According to Schultz, he has lost 50 pounds from working out in preparation of returning to the NFL. Now, he has the opportunity to make an impact for the Raiders. It will be interesting to see what kind of role he has heading into Week 14 of the regular season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding former Alabama players in the NFL.

Former Alabama OT DJ Fluker works out for Las Vegas Raiders

Former Alabama offensive tackle DJ Fluker worker out for the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday morning. Fluker last played for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021.

It has been quite some time since former Alabama offensive tackle DJ Fluker was in the NFL. However, on Friday morning, Fluker worked out for the Las Vegas Raiders. Could there be an opportunity for Fluker to join an NFL team for the first time since 2021?

Fluker has been working out for a while since departing the league. He participated in Alabama’s 2023 Pro Day in March. Since then, he has worked out for several NFL teams. Needless to say, he did not earn a practice squad opportunity or earn an active roster spot.

Fluker has spent time with seven different organizations in nine seasons. He was a member of the Raiders practice squad in 2021. If he earns a contract, it will be his second stint with the Raiders.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Fluker’s professional career as well as other news regarding former Alabama players in the NFL.

The Alabama Crimson Tide will take the field for the 2023 college football season in 76 days, as Middle Tennessee State visits Bryant Denny Stadium on Sept. 2.

Today, with just 76 days remaining, we will take a look at a former Tide star to wear No. 76, DJ Fluker.

Fluker was a monster of an offensive lineman for Alabama from 2009 to 2012. Fluker earned first-team All-SEC and first-team All-American during the 2012 season.

Could Trent Brown be out in New England?

Could Trent Brown be a surprise cut for the Patriots?

[anyclip pubname=”2103″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8036″]

With the New England Patriots still looking into options to fill their tackle depth with the tryout of former first-round draft pick D.J. Fluker, there are questions as to what it might mean for Trent Brown.

I wrote in a previous article this spring that Trent Brown could be a cap casualty, and if Fluker signs with New England, it could be more realistic. Fluker will likely be depth, as the Patriots would have Riley Reiff and Calvin Anderson to fill the two starting tackle slots, but his signing could be noteworthy.

At times last season, Brown looked like he checked out and was part of the offensive line issues overall. Better play could have potentially saved the season, but there was likely issues with the former offensive line coach and offensive coordinator, Matt Patricia. It also wouldn’t be the first time that Patricia rubbed veteran players the wrong way.

Just ask Darius Slay.

Fluker could be a veteran addition for a team still looking for answers at their two starting tackle slots. Brown being cut could save the team around $8 million, which when paired with a potential cut of DeVante Parker ($ 6.2 million saved) in a DeAndre Hopkins scenario would ideally allow the Patriots to keep their operating costs for the 2023 season, while giving Hopkins whatever he asks.

If Brown is truly checked out, which is likely with his absence at OTAs, then Bill Belichick, who has let players go for less, would cut ties and start anew. Now that Adrian Klemm is the offensive line coach in New England, there is optimism they could patch together a tackle group with Anderson, Reiff, Conor McDermott, Fluker, Andrew Stueber, or even Sidy Sow.

Belichick and crew are likely trying to change perspectives on the operation from 2022 and could cut ties with an unhappy camper who has skipped OTAs and performed poorly in 2022 to save the team cap.

If the team feels the drop-off between Brown to Reiff/Anderson isn’t major, then they could move on. It wouldn’t be the first time they’ve moved on from Brown. They did so back in 2019, when he signed a massive deal with the Oakland Raiders.

If they did it before, they could certainly do it again.

Dolphins enter June with recouped Byron Jones cap space ready to spend

It’s a big day for Dolphins fans.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

June 1 is here, and for Miami Dolphins fans, it may as well be Christmas morning or the eighth night of Hanukkah wrapped into one joyous event. The gift list which Dolphins fans have been clamoring for includes a running back, offensive line help and perhaps some depth pieces in areas like linebacker or defensive line.

As of the start of this month, the salary cap money from former Miami cornerback Byron Jones has been recouped, and general manager Chris Grier and his salary cap right-hand-man, Brandon Shore, now have $13.6 million in added funds. They also free up $8.7 million for the 2024 season.

Coinciding with Miami’s salary cap increasing to about $15 million following the Jones savings, the Dolphins could do the equivalent of gifting fans the shiny toy they have been wish-listing for years.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Dolphins’ head coach Mike McDaniel was humorously coy with his knowledge of the added funds when asked.

“We are aware that that’s occurring, and we typically do everything we can to have the best team possible within the guidelines of the salary cap,” he said. “I’m not sure where, but I’d feel confident to say that we’ll make good use of that salary cap room when it comes to the start of the regular season.”

June 1 is also the date in which the Minnesota Vikings can trade or cut running back Dalvin Cook while creating their own salary cap savings. Here are the financial parameters in the difference between a trade or a cut for Minnesota.

According to Over the Cap, cutting Cook pre-June 1 would’ve left roughly $8.2 million in dead cap for Minnesota, with a savings of about $5.9 million this year. A trade, however, would’ve created $6.2 million in dead cap and savings of $7.9 million.

Now, if Cook is cut post-June 1, Minnesota would be left with a dead cap hit of $5.1 million and cap savings of $9 million. Even more intriguing financially, a post-June 1 trade would mean a dead-cap figure of just $3.1 million with savings of $11 million.

It should be noted that Miami could wait it out, and should the Vikings not find a trade suitor, and simply cut Cook, the Dolphins could sign him to a new deal. A trade to Miami would likely have to match with a reworked deal for Cook to make it economically sound for Grier and the Dolphins.

Before getting ahead of the situation the Vikings brass will decide how to handle this, and the league and fan bases will have to wait to see where the smoke clears. Yet the waiting could be hours and not days, now that we’re in June.

The table is set for Grier and Shore to scramble the books and make way for a potential new dish or two. In addition to Cook, there are a few free-agent offensive linemen out there like Dalton Risner, who played four years of left guard for the Denver Broncos to start his NFL career. Entering his fifth season, Risner once played for Miami defensive coordinator Vic Fangio when he was head coach of the Broncos just two seasons ago.

Other names on the free agent market to look for over the next few days include George Fant and D.J. Fluker, who’s looking at a potential comeback tour, having last played in the league in 2020, yet looks to be in fine physical condition.

Adding other ingredients to this mix, the Dolphins are loaded with talent, so any importing of players may simply have to match with exporting, as there are a number of “expendable” candidates on the current roster. While nothing is a guarantee regarding the potential of acquiring Cook one way or another, it wouldn’t be shocking at all to see other moves in order to make way for him and/or other additions.

Grier has been known to make a minor move prior to a bigger move, and at times, he moves swiftly with multiple deals days or even hours apart in his history as head front office executive in Miami.

Of course, the Dolphins could start utilizing the money to help in the long-term extension process with their defensive linemen duo of Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler. Nevertheless, the money is extremely important to get back into their capital ledger, and when looking at the absence of Jones, you can simply add in replacements like the newly acquired Jalen Ramsey and rookie Cam Smith as the cornerback cherries on top of the salary cap savings.

Thursday, June 1 is here, and many Dolphins fans will be rushing to social media and news outlets to see when, or if, their shiny new gift has been purchased…or if it’s simply another home-knit sweater from your favorite aunt.

Regardless, this Miami team is already one of the most talented groups seen in South Florida since the early 1990s on both sides of the ball. The current Dolphins aren’t on the field today, but they’re back at it with OTAs on Friday, June 2.

D.J. Fluker receiving interest from NFL teams after Alabama pro day

DJ Fluker looks a lot stronger and is ready for an NFL comeback.

Former Alabama football offensive lineman DJ Fluker was drafted No. 11 overall by the then-San Diego Chargers. After finishing out his rookie contract with the Chargers, Fluker has bounced around six different NFL teams. Most recently, Fluker was signed to three different teams during the 2021 league year, but didn’t get to make an active roster.

Now, Fluker is looking to make a comeback.

Recently, he has been sharing images and pictures to social media showing significant weight loss, improved mobility and substantial muscle gain.

Posting to social media is one thing, but it’s a whole different challenge to get the right set of eyes to see the improvement.

Fluker joined stars like Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. at the Alabama football pro day, which had multiple players participate in drills and speak to NFL scouts and coaches.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network recently shared that Fluker has already received interest and “could find a home to resume his NFL career soon.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Fluker and other former Alabama players as the 2023 NFL offseason continues.

Alabama football’s pro day had some of the biggest stars of the draft show out in Tuscaloosa

Alabama football recently hosted its pro day, which allowed NFL scouts and coaches to get an in-person look at some of the Crimson Tide’s biggest stars.

Bryce Young and Will Anderson Jr. headlined those who participated, but other players about to declare for the draft were present including Brian Branch, Jahmyr Gibbs, Cameron Latu and others.

A few former Alabama players that are looking to sign free agent deals were also given an opportunity to show that they can do, as DJ Fluker and Slade Bolden both made appearances.

The 2023 NFL draft is roughly one month away and four Crimson Tide players are expected to be selected in the first round.

2023 NFL Scouting Combine Preview: Chargers GM Tom Telesco’s testing thresholds

With the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine set to start this week, we look at the types of players that Chargers GM Tom Telesco covets.

Everybody has a type.

With the on-field portion of the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine set to start on Thursday, we’re taking a look at the Chargers’ types. Today, we’ll take a look at general manager Tom Telesco.

As general manager since 2013, Telesco has a decade of drafts to draw info from, with 68 non-specialist draft picks in those years.

Raiders add veteran OL DJ Fluker to practice squad

Raiders add veteran OL DJ Fluker to practice squad

The same day the six-game suspension was lifted for DJ Fluker, he was in Las Vegas trying out for the Raiders. The team summarily signed the veteran offensive lineman to their practice squad. Fluker was on the field today for the team’s first practice of the week according to media in attendance.

The Alabama product was selected by the Chargers 11th overall in the 2013 NFL Draft, just ahead of the Raiders at 12th overall.

The 6-5, 342-pounder played his first two seasons at right tackle for the Chargers before moving to guard. He played two more seasons in San Diego before signing with the Giants and then spent two seasons in Seattle.

Last season he was back at right tackle, starting 8 games for the Ravens.

It’s no secret the right side has been a major issue for the Raiders with guard Denzelle Good going down with an injury and rookie Alex Leatherwood struggling at right tackle. His struggles prompted a move to right guard, bringing in long time backup Brandon Parker to play right tackle. That combination has not been stellar either.

We’ll see if Fluker ultimately gets brought up to the active roster to replace either Leatherwood or Parker in the starting lineup.
