Broncos add F1 driver Lewis Hamilton to ownership group

Lewis Hamilton, the top driver in F1, is now a co-owner of the Broncos.

The Denver Broncos’ new ownership group continues to grow.

Rob Walton, Denver’s (pending) majority owner, announced Tuesday that British F1 driver Lewis Hamilton is joining the team’s ownership group.

“We’re delighted to welcome seven-time Formula One world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton to our ownership group,” Walton said in a statement. “He is a champion competitor who knows what it takes to lead a winning team and a fierce advocate for global equality, including in his own sport.

“With over 100 race wins, Lewis is considered the most successful F1 driver of all time. His resilient spirit and standard of excellence will be an asset to the ownership group and the Broncos organization.”

As Walton’s statement indicated, Lewis is a highly-accomplished driver. In recognition of his racing success and off-track environmental and social activism, Lewis was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2021.

Here’s how quarterback Russell Wilson reacted to the news on Twitter:

Walton will be the team’s controlling owner, but his son-in-law, Greg Penner, is expected to handle the day-to-day operations. Penner’s wife, Carrie Walton Penner, will also have a key role in ownership.

In addition to Lewis, the Walton-Penner group has also added accomplished businesswoman Mellody Hobson and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as minority co-owners.

NFL owners will vote on the team’s new ownership group on Aug. 9, and the group is expected to be approved just in time for preseason.

D.K. Metcalf says he is faster than Tyreek Hill, who challenges him to race

This time, he boldly stated in an interview that he is faster than Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf possesses a competitive fire rivaled by few in the NFL, and he is always looking for ways to prove himself and assert his dominance in certain aspects.

This time, he boldly stated in an interview that he is faster than Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

“I got a different type of speed,” Metcalf said. “There’s Cheetah speed and I got DK speed, and that’s just me.”

Hill responded by challenging Metcalf to bet $50,000 on the outcome of a race between the two and stating that it will be donated to a charity of the Seattle receiver’s choice if he wins.

This isn’t the first time Metcalf has desired to test his speed, as he ran the 100-meter dash at USA Track and Field’s Golden Games, finishing in last place with a 10.37 time.

A race between Metcalf and Hill would certainly be enticing to watch, but who knows if they will actually go through with it.

Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill issues open challenge to those trying to race him

#Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill is out to prove his speed once again, issuing an open challenge beginning with #Seahawks WR D.K. Metcalf and Usain Bolt.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill is in peak offseason form already.

Known as the fastest man in the NFL, it has become commonplace for current and former NFL players to challenge Hill to a race. Even Olympic legend Usain Bolt has tried to get in on the action. The latest to want the smoke from Hill is Seattle Seahawks WR D.K. Metcalf.

TMZ Sports recently surprised Metcalf while touring the HQ for Nate Diaz’s “Represent” brand. He was first asked about Cowboys rookie LB Micah Parsons beating Hill in a race at the Pro Bowl.

“I mean (Micah Parsons) is pretty fast, but I thought Tyreek wasn’t trying that hard,” Metcalf said. “Who knows who is the faster person in the NFL.”

He was then asked whether he felt he could beat Hill in a race.

“Yeah. I can beat Tyreek in a race,” Metcalf said.

Word ultimately got back to Hill, who issued a challenge to both Metcalf and Bolt before ultimately issuing an open challenge.

While Hill and Metcalf have never lined up before, NFL Next Gen Stats simulated a race between the two and New York Giants QB Daniel Jones back in 2020. Hill came out on top in that simulation.

If a race does happen between Hill and Metcalf it’ll likely be later in the offseason. Metcalf recently underwent minor surgery to remove a screw from his foot and was still pictured in a boot when the interview with TMZ occurred.

Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill challenges ESPN’s Adam Schefter to a race

Hill claims he’ll even give Schefter a 40-yard head start.

There’s no one that Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill won’t challenge to a race. This offseason he lined up against Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens. During training camp, he faced off with fellow Chiefs teammate Mecole Hardman. Now, Hill has called out a new potential challenger.

On ESPN’s morning show “The Get Up” Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill formally extended a challenge to ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter. Hill had previously challenged Schefter on Twitter, but now Hill has confirmed to ESPN’s Mike Greenberg that he wants to do a race with Schefter. Hill even says that he’ll give Schefter a 40-yard head start advantage and wear his full pads.

Check it out:

“You know what, man, I’m pretty scared. His form is already better than mine,” Hill said of Schefter. “I need to work on my form a little bit more, but yes. Schefty [Adam Schefter], man, post-COVID we need to get it in for charity or something like that. Let’s just have fun with it and roll it.”

Hill reminded Schefter of his challenge on Twitter after the show.

Hill is coming off a massive performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where he recorded 203 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter. The speedy wide receiver reached a top speed of 21.09 MPH during that game according to NFL’s Next Gen Stats, placing him among the top 5 in the NFL in Week 12.

Schefter will have his work cut out for him in this race.

Alvin Kamara is a special guest at NASCAR’s Homestead-Miami race

New Orleans Saints star and Bubba Wallace fan Alvin Kamara is attending the Dixie Vodka 400 at Homestead-Miami, his first live NASCAR race.

[jwplayer 2b8epesz-ThvAeFxT]

Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway always draws a lot of attention, and for good reason: it’s the season finale in normal years. But in 2020, with NASCAR’s schedule modified due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the high-profile Miami venue was moved up to midseason with a mid-afternoon time slot.

And New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara will be in attendance, for his very first live NASCAR race. The three-time Pro Bowler has become a fan of Bubba Wallace, a prominent driver for Richard Petty Motorsports who has used his platform to rally against social inequality. Kamara live-tweeted Wallace’s performance in last week’s 500-lap race at Martsinville Speedway in Virginia. The result of that was Kamara being gifted a swag bag of Wallace merch from Checkered Flag Sports, which he wore proudly in Miami on Sunday:

Kamara trains in Miami during the offseason, so it was easy for him to accept NASCAR’s invitation and drive across town to attend Sunday’s double-header. He took time to congratulate the winner of the Contender Boats 250, Chase Briscoe of Stewart Haas Racing, while gearing up for the headline event: the Dixie Vodka 400, which starts at 2:30 p.m. CT on Fox. This is also one of the few NASCAR events with fans in attendance, with select members of the military invited to (carefully) crowd the stands in light of the pandemic.

Kamara knew going in that the speedway covered one-and-a-half miles, and that’s a distance he’s run before (plus some). But seeing the full distance of asphalt laid out in front of him made him reconsider every trying to cover it by foot.

However, what really captured Kamara’s attention was the methodical science that goes into a NASCAR pit stop. At one point, one of the crews experienced their version of a fumble — a loose tier flying around during a change. Kamara was quick to offer some advice:

But the efficiency at work when crews conducted their rapid-fire pit stops impressed the Saints superstar, with a helpful fan explaining how it all works:

So be sure to tune in, if you aren’t already. There’s a good chance the Saints superstar might cameo here and there during Sunday afternoon’s headliner.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio clarifies comments about racism in the NFL

“I realize what I said regarding racism and discrimination in the NFL was wrong,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said.

Story update: Broncos coach Vic Fangio released a statement on Wednesday and clarified comments from Tuesday.

See our original post below.

Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio said during a Zoom conference call with reporters Tuesday that he hasn’t seen racism in the NFL.

“We’re a league of meritocracy,” Fangio said. “You earn what you get, you get what you earn. I don’t see racism at all in the NFL. I don’t see discrimination in the NFL. We live in a great atmosphere.

“Like I alluded to earlier, we’re lucky. We all live together joined as one for one common goal, and we all intermingle and mix tremendously. If society reflected an NFL team, we’d all be great.”

Earlier in the call, Fangio noted how diverse the Broncos are.

“Our locker room and our teams have no boundaries,” Fangio said. “We have players, coaches, people that work for the team from all different ethnicities, from all different walks of life, from all different backgrounds, nationalities, religious beliefs, and over the years all of those have been blended in together seamlessly most of the time. I think sports is a great forum for that and luckily it just proves how people can get along.”

Fangio also said the officer involved in George Floyd’s death should be “punished to the fullest extent of the law for the crimes” he committed.

Olympic runner prematurely celebrates near finish line, blows race and chance at record

It’s not uncharacteristic for an elite runner to begin celebrating while nearing the finish line following a hard-fought race. But it’s a big no-no to do so when a challenger is close behind and a new race course record is on the line.
