Newbie Ronnie Perkins gets Pat Tillman jersey after practice work in Week 9

Practice squad linebacker Ronnie Perkins was the latest honoree of practice player of the week and wore a Pat Tillman jersey in practice.

Edge rusher Ronnie Perkins has had a rough go of it during his first four seasons in the NFL after being a third-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2021.

However, Perkins was front and center this week in practice for the Arizona Cardinals only 21 days after being signed to the practice squad. He was wearing No. 40 as the scout team player of the week for his work leading up to last Sunday’s win over the Chicago Bears.

“It’s a great feeling,” Perkins said. “I’m still kinda the new guy. I’ve only been here for three weeks now. I missed the whole training camp (in Denver) with an injury, so just getting back to football. But it feels good to earn that with a new team, for the coaches to notice the work I’m putting in, for my teammates to notice the work I’m putting in.”

Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Perkins “had a really good week last week. Rushed really well, played the run game really well and gave us a really good look. First play of the game, sure enough, something that he didn’t practice, they do the exact same thing first play of the game, and it looked the same; which is good. He’s done a good job.”

Perkins said he knew a lot about Tillman before arriving in Arizona.

He said, “I’m a huge football guy. I was always around it, always watched it, so I knew a lot about Pat before I came here. Every time 9/11 rolls around, the Pat story goes around a lot, so I knew about Pat Tillman pretty much since my childhood. Just to be able share his jersey with him, share his number with him, it’s like an incredible feeling.”

Players compete for the award each week and Perkins said once he learned about the award, “it was definitely one of my goals. I told JG earlier, ‘I want it again next week.’ I got it now and the plan is not to let it get away from me. Just keep working, keep doing what I’m doing. Try to get the guys prepared for Sunday.”

Making it even more worthwhile is that it came in the week that the NFL is celebrating Veterans Day as well as the 48th anniversary of Tillman’s birth being Nov. 6 and ESPN broadcasting a show about his story Thursday.

“That definitely makes it more special,” Perkins said Thursday. “I found out yesterday it was his birthday, the first practice of the week. It lit a fire under me, feeling some magical powers wearing his number on his birthday. It’s just giving me more motivation to go out there, go hard playing in his name and his number. It’s definitely an honor. I just want to go out there, make him proud as he is watching down on the Cardinals from heaven.”

Asked for his reaction after finding out last Saturday he had won the award, Perkins said, “I’m gonna be real. J.O. Jr. (Julian Okwara), he turned around and looked at me like I was so shocked. He looked at my face and it was like, ‘Why you looking so shocked.’”

Perkins admitted, “If you ask me, I still haven’t put my best stuff on film yet. I am doing some good things. I don’t want to discredit myself, but I was shocked because I still feel like I got a long ways to go. Like I said, I missed out on training camp and the preseason, so trying to just figure back out some football stuff. But it was a great feeling for the coaches to recognize me; they feel like I did a great job of helping the team out last week.”

Missing time unfortunately has been a large part of his first three-plus seasons in the NFL.

In his rookie year, Perkins was inactive for 13 games and then ended the season on injured reserve. The entire 2022 season was also spent on IR. Waived by the Patriots on Aug. 29, 2023, he was signed to their practice squad, but was then signed to the active roster by the Broncos where new Cardinal Baron Browning was also an edge rusher.

He played in seven games that season, but this past summer was placed on injured reserve on Aug. 7 and waived Sept. 17 before coming to the Cardinals a month later.

Perkins hopes he gets more opportunities to show the coaching staff what he can do.

He said, “Every week I go home, watch the film, figure out where I need to get better and next week I come in and attack that. I feel like in these last two weeks, every full padded practice, every hard practice, I’ve gotten better and I’ve progressed a lot. I still feel I’m not where I wanna be, but I feel like I’ll get there.”

In the true spirit of Pat Tillman.

3 ex-Broncos players found new NFL homes on Tuesday

Ex-Broncos players Brandon McManus (Packers), Marquez Callaway (Bucs) and Ronnie Perkins (Cardinals) found new NFL homes on Tuesday.

A trio of former Denver Broncos players found new NFL homes on Tuesday.

Perhaps most notably, the Green Bay Packers signed kicker Brandon McManus. He served as Denver’s kicker from 2014-2022, helping the team win Super Bowl 50 following the 2015 season.

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed wide receiver Marquez Callaway. He had a cup of coffee with the Broncos last summer, competing in training camp and preseason before being cut when Denver set its 53-man roster.

Finally, the Arizona Cardinals signed pass rusher Ronnie Perkins to their practice squad. Perkins spent part of the last two years with the Broncos before being released from injured reserve with an injury settlement last month.

Elsewhere on the ex-Denver player front, the Falcons promoted defensive lineman Matt Hennessy to their 53-man roster.

On the injury front, the Cardinals placed kicker Matt Prater (knee) on injured reserve and the Lions placed defensive lineman Kyle Peko (pec) on IR.

As for the Broncos, they cut two players on Tuesday, perhaps to make room for other players set to return from IR this week.

Broncos cut pass rusher from injured reserve

The Broncos have waived OLB Ronnie Perkins from injured reserve.

Perkins (6-3, 253 pounds) was initially waived by the Broncos with an injury designation in August. After clearing waivers, he reverted to the team’s IR list. Denver has now reached an injury settlement with Perkins and he will be waived from IR to become a free agent.

The NFL’s transaction wire also listed Andrew Farmer as having visited the Broncos on Tuesday. Farmer is set to sign with the team’s practice squad, but that move will not become official until Wednesday.

The fact that Denver is bringing in Farmer to provide depth at outside linebacker might not be a good sign for the status of Baron Browning, who suffered a foot injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. We’ll find out more about Browning’s status following Wednesday’s practice when the Broncos release their first injury report of the week.

Broncos have 5 players on IR/PUP lists going into 2024 season

The Broncos have five players on injured reserve and PUP lists going into the 2024 season.

The Denver Broncos have three players on injured reserve and two players on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list going into the 2024 season.

The Broncos have two players — offensive tackle Quinn Bailey (ankle) and pass rusher Ronnie Perkins (undisclosed) — on the season-ending IR list. They are out for the entire season.

Denver also has a third player — cornerback Damarri Mathis (ankle) — on the short-term IR list. He is eligible to return after four games.

Last week, the Broncos also waived pass rusher Durell Nchami (hamstring) with an injury designation. Nchami cleared waivers so he should have reverted to Denver’s IR list, but he is not listed on the team’s official website. Either that is an oversight or the Broncos reached an injury settlement with Nchami and released him from IR.

Finally, Denver has two players — linebacker Drew Sanders (Achilles) and safety Delarrin Turner-Yell (ACL) — on the PUP list. They are eligible to return after four games, but they might need more time to recover.

  1. OT Quinn Bailey (ankle)
  2. OLB Ronnie Perkins (undisclosed)
  3. Status unclear: OLB Durell Nchami (hamstring)

Broncos roster series: No. 51, OLB Ronnie Perkins

Entering his second season with the Broncos, pass rusher Ronnie Perkins will look to build on his 149 snaps from last fall.

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at fourth-year outside linebacker Ronnie Perkins, No. 51.

Before the Broncos: Perkins (6-3, 253 pounds) entered the league as a third-round pick out of Oklahoma with the New England Patriots in 2021. He was inactive or on injured reserve for all of his rookie season and then missed the 2022 season with another injury. Last summer, the Patriots waived Perkins during roster cuts and bumped him down to their practice squad.

Broncos tenure: Denver signed Perkins off New England’s practice squad last September. He dressed for seven games in 2023, totaling 13 tackles and one quarterback hit on 149 defensive snaps. He also played 21 snaps on special teams.

Chances to make the 53-man roster: Likely. Perkins’ chances of making the active roster are increased by the fact that Drew Sanders (Achilles) will begin the season on injured reserve. Baron Browning, Jonathon Cooper, Nik Bonitto and Jonah Elliss are locks at outside linebacker. Assuming the Broncos plan to carry more than four OLBs, Perkins should have a good shot to make the team as well.

Broncos need more from their pass rush in 2024

The Broncos did not have any players with double-digit sacks in 2024 and the defense ranked 22nd out of 32 teams with 42 total sacks.

The Denver Broncos totaled 42 sacks in 2023, tied for the 11th-lowest total in the NFL, and the worst total in the AFC West. Elsewhere in the division, the Las Vegas Raiders (46 sacks), Los Angeles Chargers (48 sacks) and Kansas City Chiefs (57 sacks) got more production from their pass rushers.

The Broncos will need more from their edge defenders in 2024. Part of the problem in 2023 was leaning on Randy Gregory and Frank Clark early in the year. Both players were off the team by mid-season.

Another hindrance was Baron Browning’s meniscus tear that sidelined him for the first six games of the campaign. After he returned from that injury, Browning had modest production, totaling 4.5 sacks in 10 games.

Jonathon Cooper (8.5 sacks) and Nik Bonitto (8.0 sacks) were the team’s most productive pass rushers in 2023, but both of them might be better suited for a rotational rusher role instead of a regular starting gig.

If Browning is able to reach his potential in 2024, Denver could pair him with a high-profile pass rusher. Cooper and Bonitto would be excellent rotation options in such a scenario. If Browning never turns into the kind of pass rusher the Broncos hope he can be, Denver will eventually need two starting-caliber edge defenders.

The Broncos are set to select 12th overall in the 2024 NFL draft and that might be an ideal place to land a top pass rusher. Recent mock drafts have Denver landing Laiatu Latu, Jared Verse and Chop Robinson at that spot. Whether it’s one of those options or another prospect, the Broncos would be wise to bring in a high-profile pass rusher in 2024.

Broncos sign 12 players to reserve/future contract

The Broncos signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts on Monday. They will officially join the 90-man offseason roster in March.

Following the conclusion of their 2023 season, the Denver Broncos have signed 12 players to reserve/future contracts.

Perhaps the most notable signing is that of quarterback Ben DiNucci, who spent all of the 2023 season on the practice squad and was elevated to Denver’s game-day roster three times.

With Russell Wilson expected to be released in March, DiNucci and Jarrett Stidham will be left as the Broncos’ two quarterbacks going into 2024. Denver will likely add at least one more QB, either through free agency or the draft (or both) this spring.

Players who were not on an active roster at the end of the season are eligible to sign reserve/future contracts (every player on the practice squad is eligible, for example). These players will officially join the 90-man offseason roster when the NFL’s new league year begins on March 13.

Here’s a look at the 12 players the Broncos have signed to future deals.

Broncos buzz: Injuries, fines and elevations before Week 17

The Broncos placed RB Dwayne Washington on the reserve/NFI list and called up WR Michael Bandy, WR Phillip Dorsett and OLB Ronnie Perkins.

The Denver Broncos made several roster moves on Saturday ahead of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

First, the Broncos placed running back Dwayne Washington (illness) on the reserve/non-football illness list. To fill Washington’s former spot on the 53-man roster, Denver promoted receiver/returner Michael Bandy from the practice squad to the active roster.

With Courtland Sutton (concussion) ruled out and Jerry Jeudy (illness) and Marvin Mims (hamstring) both questionable, Bandy can provide more depth on offense and special teams against the Chargers.

In addition to the Bandy-for-Washington swap, the Broncos also elevated wide receiver Phillip Dorsett and outside linebacker Ronnie Perkins from the practice squad to the game-day roster for Week 17. Dorsett and Perkins will revert back to the practice squad on Monday.

Fine update: Denver guard Quinn Meinerz was fined $7,251 by NFL for unnecessary roughness against the New England Patriots on Christmas Eve. Meinerz was penalized for jumping on Patriots linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley in the second quarter.

Broncos made several roster moves ahead of Lions game

The Broncos added Lucas Krull to 53-man roster, moved Ronnie Perkins to the practice squad and elevated Ben DiNucci and Tyler Lancaster.

The Denver Broncos made several roster moves ahead of Saturday’s game against the Detroit Lions.

First, the team waived outside linebacker Ronnie Perkins from the 53-man roster on Thursday. To fill Perkins’ former spot on the active roster, Denver promoted tight end Lucas Krull from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. The Broncos re-signed Perkins to the practice squad on Saturday.

Additionally, the team elevated quarterback Ben DiNucci and nose tackle Tyler Lancaster from the practice squad to the game-day roster on Saturday. DiNucci and Lancaster will revert back to the practice squad on Monday.

Krull previously used up his three practice squad elevations, so the Broncos had to fully promote him to the active roster so he can play in Detroit. Krull is now set to serve as the team’s third-string tight end behind Adam Trautman and Chris Manhertz.

The Broncos have not yet activated tight end Greg Dulcich, who is eligible to return from injured reserve. Dulcich recovered from his hamstring injury and practiced on Wednesday, only to then suffer a foot injury that ruled him out for Week 15.

Saturday’s game will be nationally televised on NFL Network.

Broncos sign pass rusher Ronnie Perkins off Patriots’ practice squad

After losing Frank Clark to a hip injury, the Broncos signed OLB Ronnie Perkins off the Patriots’ practice squad .

The Denver Broncos have added more depth at outside linebacker following Sunday’s 35-33 loss to the Washington Commanders.

The Broncos signed pass rusher Ronnie Perkins off the New England Patriots’ practice squad, the team announced Monday. He will add depth to the position after the team lost Frank Clark to a hip injury.

Denver had an open spot on the active roster for Perkins after placing tight end Greg Dulcich (hamstring) on injured reserve last week. Dulcich will be eligible to return from IR after four games.

Perkins (6-3, 253 pounds) entered the league as a third-round pick out of Oklahoma with the Patriots in 2021. Perkins was inactive for New England’s first 13 games in his rookie season and then went on injured reserve. Perkins then missed the entire 2022 season on IR before beginning the 2023 campaign on the Patriots’ practice squad.

Perkins is yet to make an appearance in a regular-season NFL game. In college, he totaled 98 tackles (32 behind the line), 16.5 sacks, one pass breakup and one forced fumble in 61 games with the Sooners.
