Report: Packers signing former Bills WR Robert Foster to practice squad

The Packers are signing the speedy former Bills WR to the team’s practice squad, per a report.

The Green Bay Packers are adding some speed and experience to the wide receiver room via a practice squad addition.

According to Matt Zenitz of AL.com, the Packers are signing former Buffalo Bills receiver Robert Foster to the team’s 16-player practice squad.

Foster, an undrafted free agent from Alabama, spent two years with the Bills, catching 30 passes for 605 yards and three touchdowns, including 27 catches for 541 yards and all three scores during an impressive rookie season in 2018.

Foster, 26, was released by the Bills on Saturday.

The 6-2, 196-pound receiver ran the 40-yard dash in 4.41 seconds at the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine. He finished the three-cone drill in 6.9 seconds and hit 31″ in the vertical leap.

Foster played in just three games last season, catching three passes for 64 yards.

The Packers have already signed receivers Darrius Shepherd and Reggie Begelton to the practice squad on Sunday, giving the team at least eight receivers – including the five on the active roster – in the building to start the 2020 season.

7 notable cuts from the AFC East

7 notable cuts from the AFC East

Cut-down day is the toughest day of the year for many coaches. This year was especially challenging, as teams had to make final decisions about their roster without the benefit of preseason games.

Teams reduced their rosters to 53 players Saturday. The AFC East saw several players dropped from rosters who were thought to be contributors in the regular season.

Here are seven notable cuts from the AFC East:

New England Patriots

Texans running back Lamar Miller. Credit: Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

RB Lamar Miller

Miller missed the 2019 season with an ACL injury. He signed with the Patriots on August 14. Miller was expected to provide depth for the Patriots, as starter Sony Michel is returning from foot surgery.

K Justin Rohrwasser

New England drafted Rohrwasser in the fifth round of last April’s draft. After making news off the field with a controversial tattoo, the rookie could not do enough to make the roster. It seems as if the Patriots wasted a draft pick this year. The Bills selected their starting kicker, Tyler Bass, 30 picks after Rohrwasser.

K Nick Folk

Not only did the Pats cut Rohrwasser, they currently don’t have a kicker at all. Their veteran in Folk was released on Saturday as well.

Report: Robert Foster, Jason Croom pop up in trade talks

Buffalo Bills’ Robert Foster, Jason Croom could be traded, says the MMQB.

The Buffalo Bills have to cut their roster down to 53 players by Saturday at 4 p.m. The team can do so by any means necessary.

The one we’ll see the most is players being out-right cut… but trades, something Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane hasn’t been shy about doing in recent years at this time of the NFL calendar, are certainly on the table as well.

Less than 24 hours prior to that deadline, the Bills are reportedly looking into moving two players via trade. According to Albert Breer from the MMQB, two Bills players have had their named raised in trade talks: wide receiver Robert Foster and tight end Jason Croom.

Both players very much make sense to consider moving for the Bills. The pair guys promising spells in the 2018 season. Both jumped into the fold late in the season and showed promise, before laying duds last season. Foster couldn’t manage to get active on game days in 2019 while Croom spent the year on the injured reserve list.

In addition, both have had injuries during this year’s training camp. However, both have recently returned to the fold, so teams could be interested in them.

During that mentioned 2018 season, Foster had 27 catches for 571 yards and nearly led the Bills in receiving despite playing in only 13 games but was edged out by Zay Jones in the season finale. Last year Foster, a UDFA rookie in 2018, only had three catches.

Croom, 26, actually did lead the Bills in receiving via tight ends, beating out Charles Clay that season with 22 catches and 259 yards. He made three starts late that season.

5 toughest decisions Bills have to make before roster cut down

Here are the toughest decisions the Buffalo Bills and Brandon Beane have to make prior to Saturday’s cut-down deadline in the NFL.

Tick, tick, tick, tick…

That’s what the clock on the wall next to Bills head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane is sounding like right now at One Bills Drive.

Granted, we know cutting down a NFL roster does not change the sound of a wall clock in any way, shape, or form, we assume it’s just going to sound a little louder for those two in the coming hours. The Bills have until 4 p.m. on Saturday to get their roster to 53 players from their near 80 currently.

A lot of hard choices are staring the team right in the face. Which of those are perhaps the toughest to make? Here are five of the toughest decisions the Bills are going to make soon:

Bills quarterback Jake Fromm. (James P. McCoy/Buffalo News vas AP, Pool)

What to do with Jake Fromm?

What a scenario rookie quarterback Jake Fromm has put the Bills in…

Buffalo surprisingly used a fifth-round pick on Fromm at the recent draft. Beneath the surface, not a bad idea. Josh Allen has more than double the amount of starts as Matt Barkley in his young career already, so Barkley isn’t exactly your “veteran” backup as much as we’re led to believe Having said that, adding a younger backup with some potential upside (we know what Barkley is)… not the worst idea by the Bills.

But then came Fromm’s racially-charged text messages which put the team in a terrible position earlier this offseason. In a statement, the Bills said they’d “work with him.” Well, they did, and so far in training camp, Fromm hasn’t provided the assurances that he’d be a player to keep on their final roster. Multiple outlets, including The Athletic, think Fromm’s going to be cut his play has been so disappointing.

But will the Bills do such a thing? They’ve backed a struggling fifth-round rookie in Nathan Peterman in the past, already stood up for Fromm, and there’s COVID-19 to consider. Keeping as many quarterbacks as possible is smart, and there’s a much higher chance Fromm is scooped up off waivers as opposed to a guy like Davis Webb, who could sneak onto the practice squad. A very tough choice.

A look at the Bills WR position prior to roster cuts

Pro Football Focus has the Bills receiving corps ranked as the fifth best in the NFL, which is a pretty big jump from where the unit was even just a season ago. The Bills are just days away from breaking down their roster to 53 players. Cut-down day …

Pro Football Focus has the Bills receiving corps ranked as the fifth best in the NFL, which is a pretty big jump from where the unit was even just a season ago. The Bills are just days away from breaking down their roster to 53 players. Cut-down day in the league is slated for Saturday at 4 p.m. Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane has some tough decisions ahead of him.

With a position group built through free agency, trades and the draft, here’s a breakdown of the position, player-by-player:

Duke Williams

Duke Williams caught the Bills attention thanks to a strong showing in the Canadian Football league. He demonstrated big-play potential during the 2019 preseason after signing with Buffalo and is a big target at 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, who may work his way into a role on offense.

Entering his second year with the team, the 27-year-old Auburn product had the two biggest catches during camp so far, muscling one in coverage on a pass from quarterback Matt Barkley and making an even more impressive one-handed haul in amidst multiple defenders on a throw from rookie QB Jake Fromm. The biggest problem with Williams is his lack of production on special teams, something several other depth options have.

Isaiah Hodgins

Growing up around the Arizona Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald seems to have made an impression on Hodgins. The 6-foot-4 rookie out of Oregon State dubbed the Bills’ ‘biggest draft steal’ by Draft Wire had 86 catches for 1,171 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns last season for the Beavers. Like Diggs, he’s known for his route running and was described by The Draft Network as having “the most natural hands in the class.” It will be interesting to see if he can make his way into the receiver group in his first year as a Bill, but could another team claim him of Buffalo’s practice squad if he ends up there?

9 Bills on roster bubble who need a big final week of training camp

Nine players on the roster bubble still who need a big week of practice before 2020 cutdown day at training camp.

It seems like Buffalo Bills training camp only just began, but it’s actually already almost over. In less than a week, teams have to cut down to 53 players. By Saturday at 4 p.m., we’ll know who the Bills are heading into their 2020 season opener against the Jets with. Many of those players we already know of.

Guys like quarterback Josh Allen and cornerback Tre’Davious White aren’t near that territory, but with training camp coming to a close, there’s still plenty of guys still squarely on the roster bubble who need a big week of practice before next weekend.

With that, here are nine players on the Bills still on the roster bubble heading into the final week of camp:

CB Dane Jackson, Pittsburgh

CB Dane Jackson

It’s never a lock for a seventh-round rookie. You’re just a step away from being an undrafted rookie and that’s the case for cornerback Dane Jackson. Recently during the Bills’ training camp scrimmage, Jackson was running with the backups against the starting defense. However, even if he was with the twos, the Bills were thin at cornerback. Josh Norman (hamstring) is out and UDFA rookie Ike Brown retired this week. Since then, the Bills have added Brian Allen via free agency and there’s still Cam Lewis to consider. Jackson needs to hold both of those guys off this week if he’s going to keep a depth spot.

Stock up, stock down following start of Bills training camp

Stock report following the start of Buffalo Bills training camp 2020.

The Bills are pretty much fully underway into their 2020 training camp slate. The Bills can hold a maximum of 14 padded practices during the 21-day contact integration period ahead of the start of the 2020 regular season. Just a few of the several curve balls the COVID-19 pandemic has sent us this offseason.

Of those 14 practices, we’re about halfway through them. With still a nice chunk of work left to do before the Bills meet the Jets for their season opener on Sept. 13, let’s check in with the roster’s stock report.

Here’s the latest stock up, stock down for the Bills from training camp:

Stock up

Bills Gabriel Davis. (James P. McCoy/Buffalo News via AP, Pool)

WR Gabriel Davis

Let’s start with the star of training camp. For years the Bills have coveted two things, a No. 1 wide receiver that’s going to knock your socks off and a big-bodied target that can’t be stopped. Nobody just really expected to get both of those via two players in Stefon Diggs and rookie wide receiver Gabriel Davis.

Diggs has impressed in camp in his own right, yes, but could his stock get any higher? Probably not. As the season unfolds, Davis might be getting more and more reps in the Bills offense as he’s already flashing an ability to box out defenders all throughout training camp.

Isn’t it nice to see all the eyes on a depth wide receiver for once who… actually seems legit?

Bills defensive end Bryan Cox Jr.. (James P. McCoy/Pool Photo via AP)

DE Bryan Cox Jr.

The defensive side of the ball has their Gabriel Davis as well and it’s Bryan Cox Jr. He’s more of your typical “depth wide receiver” type of guys who’s definitely on the bubble at this time, but he’s certainly making things interesting on the edge. Cox has notched several “sacks” on multiple days of training camp (they don’t actually tackle QBs at camp), even seeing some time against quarterback Josh Allen and the first-team offense. Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison and AJ Epenesa are your roster locks at defensive end, but if the Bills see Trent Murphy as an expendable player, could Cox be the team’s No. 4 defensive end? Or could the team even keep five?

Bills injury report: Taiwan Jones exits practice, others return

Buffalo Bills injury report from the sixth day of their 2020 training camp.

The Buffalo Bills might be down a special teamer. According to various reports from their sixth day of training camp practices on Sunday, running back Taiwan Jones exited the practice early. WGR-550 radio reports that the 32-year-old was injured when he awkwardly stepped when downing a punt.

Jones, who was previously with the Bills from 2017-2018, re-signed with the team via free agency this offseason. He spent 2019 with the Texans. While a depth option at running back, if Jones’ injury is significant his spot on special teams will be a big hole for the team to fill.

But the injury situation was actually much brighter, overall, than it had been in previous days. Defensive tackle Ed Oliver (hip) practiced for the first time in nearly a week. Linebackers Tremaine Edmunds (hip) and AJ Klein (ankle) also returned to practice after missing the team’s last practice on Friday. Wide receiver Robert Foster (concussion) practiced in a limit fashion but in a red non-contact jersey.

Here’s the Bills full injury list for Friday, including carryovers from Friday’s injury report which remained the same:

DID NOT PRACTICE

  • FB Patrick DiMarco (neck)

PUP LIST

  • TE Tommy Sweeney (foot)

OUT FOR EXTENDED PERIOD

  • OL Jon Feliciano (chest)

Notes: QB Josh Allen, DL Quinton Jefferson, DT Vernon Butler, DT Harrison Phillips all missed practice after false-negative COVID-19 tests were reportedly found for them, they are expected to practice on Monday.

Bills injury report: Josh Norman leaves practice early

Buffalo Bills injury report from Thursday 2020 training camp practice, cornerback Josh Norman leaves early with leg injury.

Buffalo Bills cornerback Josh Norman suffered an injury during the team’s practice on Thursday. He left the session early, which was the first “live” practice for the team this training camp. After three days of light-physical activity during practices, full-on tackling was part of the process for the first time this offseason, and that got to Norman, evidently.

According to various reports from the practice, Norman intercepted a Josh Allen pass intended for Stefon Diggs and on the tackle, Norman was hurt. The Buffalo News reports that Norman walked off after the injury with trainers but did not return from the sideline where he rode a bike.

The Bills signed Norman this offseason to compete with incumbent start Levi Wallace for the team’s No. 2 cornerback job across from recent All-Pro Tre’Davious White. As of now, nothing official from the team on the 32-year-old’s status after leaving the field.

In a bit of more positive news, the Bills did see Quinton Jefferson return to practice. He missed one session due to a foot injury. Jefferson had ankle surgery last offseason after his former team, the Seahawks, were bounced from the playoffs. His return signals something less serious, though.

Linebacker Vosean Joseph also practiced Thursday, but this time without the red non-contact jersey he was previously wearing.

Here’s are the carryovers from the Bills’ injury list on Wednesday which remained the same:

Did not practice

  • DT Ed Oliver (hip)
  • FB Patrick DiMarco (neck)
  • WR Robert Foster (concussion)

PUP LIST

  • TE Tommy Sweeney (foot)

OUT FOR EXTENDED PERIOD

  • OL Jon Feliciano (chest)

Notes: Bills head coach Sean McDermott said on Thursday that Oliver, who’s missed four practices, could return soon… Foster has missed three-straight practices… Feliciano is expected to several regular season games…

B/R suggest Bills trade away WR before season

Bleacher Report tabs wide receiver Robert Foster a trade candidate for the Buffalo Bills.

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Robert Foster sees his status with the team very much up in the air. We’ve seen two types of player out of him.

In 2018, the undrafted rookie headed into the team’s season finale with a legitimate look at leading the team in receiving yards. Instead, Zay Jones, who played several more games than him that season, edged Foster out. But last season, Foster was no where close to those levels.

In 2019, Foster never found his footing and barely made a mark on the Bills season. As training camp winds on currently, the Bills are finding out which version of Foster is going to be around in 2020. Then again, maybe Foster is out there proving himself for another team? That’s something Bleacher Report recently speculated.

In a bit of a surprise, B/R tabbed Foster as a potential trade candidate for Buffalo at the end of training camp. Here’s why:

The Buffalo Bills’ trade for wide receiver Stefon Diggs provides quarterback Josh Allen with the legitimate No. 1 wideout that he’s been lacking. However, it also means that one player from Buffalo’s suddenly potent receiving corps may be on his way out.

Third-year wideout and former Alabama speedster Robert Foster was largely an afterthought in the offense before Diggs’ arrival, catching only three passes for 64 yards last season.

Foster should still have some trade value based on his physical potential—he ran a 4.41-second 40 at the combine at 6’1″ and 196 pounds—and the promise he flashed as a rookie. He caught 27 passes for 541 yards and three scores in 2018 prior to the arrival of John Brown and Cole Beasley.

Because of Buffalo’s depth at the position, Foster himself might also prefer a trade heading into 2020. While he might flash as a good weapon at training camp, he knows with the likes of Diggs, Brown and Beasley alone, there will be few opportunities for him in Buffalo next season if everyone remains healthy. Not only that, a roster spot for Foster in general is very much in question.

Brown recently touted rookie wide receivers Gabriel Davis and Isaiah Hodgins. On top of that, even guys like Isaiah McKenzie and Duke Williams have shown themselves are more promising prospect as of last seasomn. Over the past few training camps, Bills general manager Brandon Beane has used depth pieces on the offensive line to fetch the team addition late picks at the draft. In Foster, Beane could have another promising bargaining chip for another one of those as well.
