Colts sign DE Bryan Cox Jr., OT Jason Spriggs

The Colts added DE Bryan Cox Jr. and OT Jason Spriggs.

The Indianapolis Colts signed defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. and offensive tackle Jason Spriggs and waived defensive end Cullen Wick, the team announced Friday.

Cox was one of the five players who attended the team’s minicamp on a tryout basis. In 26 career games with the Carolina Panthers (2017-2019), Cleveland Browns (2019) and Buffalo Bills (2020), Cox has recorded five tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks.

Spriggs was a second-round pick with the Green Bay Packers during the 2016 NFL draft where he spent four seasons. He also spent time with the Chicago Bears (2020) and Atlanta Falcons (2021).

Wick joined the Colts following the 2022 NFL draft as an undrafted rookie free agent.

Colts have 5 players at minicamp on tryout basis

Colts have five players on a tryout basis attending minicamp.

The Indianapolis Colts have five players attending mandatory minicamp this week on a tryout basis, per Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star.

Two of the five players are veterans in former Tennessee Titans edge rusher Derick Roberson and former Buffalo Bills defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. The other three are rookies.

They include former Arkansas wide receiver Tyson Morris, former Army safety Cedrick Cunningham and former Texas State defensive tackle Caeveon Patton.

The Colts wrap up minicamp Thursday and will have one more week of OTAs for the rookies before breaking for summer and returning to Westfield for training camp at the end of July.

Bills place DE Bryan Cox Jr. on IR following minicamp injury

DE Bryan Cox Jr. for Buffalo Bills has Achilles injury.

The Bills have placed defensive end Bryan Cox Jr. on injured reserve. The team announced the move on Tuesday.

Cox suffered an injury during the team’s minicamp last week which required him to be carted off the field. Per reports from the scene, it appeared to be a lower body injury which is the case. Cox has suffered an Achilles injury, according to the team.

Considering the extensive depth the Bills added to the defensive end position this offseason, including two high draft picks in Greg Rousseau and Boogie Basham, Cox had an uphill battle to make the Bills’ 53-man roster this summer.

In 2020, Cox did stick around on the team’s practice squad. He also appeared in one game and made one tackle in that outing.

With the long timetable of recovery an Achilles injury requires, it could be awhile before we hear from Cox again.

Who the Bills protected on their practice squad for Week 9

Buffalo Bills practice squad protections ahead of their Week 9 meeting with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Bills announced their Week 9 players the team has placed on the protected portion of their practice squad via the NFL’s transaction wire on Tuesday ahead of their game with the Seattle Seahawks this weekend.

Two weeks ago, the Bills changed up the players they protected on their practice squad for the first time in over a month. But the team reverted back to keeping it the same once again.

The four players this week, who were the same as last two weeks, are:

  • OL Jordan Devey
  • CB Dane Jackson
  • DE Bryan Cox Jr.
  • OL Jonotthan Harrison

From Weeks 3 to 6, the Bills protected the same four players, which included defensive tackle Justin Zimmer instead of Cox. The others were the same. The reason for the change is because Zimmer, who played in Week 6 against the Kansas City Chiefs, was signed to Buffalo’s 53-man roster. Zimmer was called up to the Bills’ roster for the game, but it was the second time he did so this season and there’s a two-game limit in regard to players doing so this season. Along with Zimmer, Cox was also called up to face the Chiefs. It was the first time Cox was called up this season.

Prior to Week 3, here’s who the Bills have protected over the course of their first two games, respectively:

Week 2

  • OL Jordan Devey
  • CB Dane Jackson
  • LB Andre Swift
  • DT Justin Zimmer

Week 1

  • OL Evan Boehm
  • DT Justin Zimmer
  • CB Dane Jackson
  • CB Cam Lewis

Boehm has since been released from Buffalo’s practice squad.

On occasion, the practice squad protections could help indicate potential injury designations to come this week. Considering there haven’t been any changes to this group much over recent weeks, we’re not getting much of that here.

For reference, check out our previous explanation on the “protected” practice squad situation, a new addition to the NFL this season, from our Week 1 coverage:

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic in the United States, the NFL’s owners and players came to an offseason agreement that we’ve seen the first installment of on Tuesday evening. Each team in the league can “protect” four players on their practice squad each week.

The idea is to provide some extra depth for teams in case of a COVID-19 outbreak in a locker room late in the week prior to a Sunday or Monday game. Those four can be called up to the active roster up until Sunday morning prior to kickoff every week.

Bills elevated Bryan Cox Jr., Justin Zimmer from practice squad

DE Bryan Cox Jr., DT Justin Zimmer elevated from Buffalo Bills practice squad ahead of Week 6 vs. Kansas City Chiefs.

The Bills have elevated defensive end Bryan Cox Kr. and defensive tackle Justin Zimmer from their practice squad ahead of Monday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The team announced the moves just over two hours prior to kickoff.

Zimmer was called up from the practice squad once already this season, ahead of Buffalo’s season opener against the Jets. He had four tackles. Cox makes his first appearance with the Bills.

Reported earlier in the day on Monday, the Bills are said be scratching defensive tackle Harrison Phillips and defensive end Trent Murphy for their meeting with the Chiefs. Calling up the two guys from the practice squad all but assures that will take place at 3:30 p.m. when the team announces their inactive list for Week 6.

Stock up, stock down following start of Bills training camp

Stock report following the start of Buffalo Bills training camp 2020.

The Bills are pretty much fully underway into their 2020 training camp slate. The Bills can hold a maximum of 14 padded practices during the 21-day contact integration period ahead of the start of the 2020 regular season. Just a few of the several curve balls the COVID-19 pandemic has sent us this offseason.

Of those 14 practices, we’re about halfway through them. With still a nice chunk of work left to do before the Bills meet the Jets for their season opener on Sept. 13, let’s check in with the roster’s stock report.

Here’s the latest stock up, stock down for the Bills from training camp:

WR Gabriel Davis

Let’s start with the star of training camp. For years the Bills have coveted two things, a No. 1 wide receiver that’s going to knock your socks off and a big-bodied target that can’t be stopped. Nobody just really expected to get both of those via two players in Stefon Diggs and rookie wide receiver Gabriel Davis.

Diggs has impressed in camp in his own right, yes, but could his stock get any higher? Probably not. As the season unfolds, Davis might be getting more and more reps in the Bills offense as he’s already flashing an ability to box out defenders all throughout training camp.

Isn’t it nice to see all the eyes on a depth wide receiver for once who… actually seems legit?

DE Bryan Cox Jr.

The defensive side of the ball has their Gabriel Davis as well and it’s Bryan Cox Jr. He’s more of your typical “depth wide receiver” type of guys who’s definitely on the bubble at this time, but he’s certainly making things interesting on the edge. Cox has notched several “sacks” on multiple days of training camp (they don’t actually tackle QBs at camp), even seeing some time against quarterback Josh Allen and the first-team offense. Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison and AJ Epenesa are your roster locks at defensive end, but if the Bills see Trent Murphy as an expendable player, could Cox be the team’s No. 4 defensive end? Or could the team even keep five?

Bryan Cox Jr. says dad has ‘no hard feelings’ for Bills

After Bryan Cox Jr. signed with the Bills, we tracked back why his dad, a former Dolphins linebacker, was once the most-hated player by Bills Mafia in the 1990s.

After Bryan Cox Jr. signed with the Bills this week, we tracked back why his dad, a former Dolphins linebacker, was once the most-hated player by Bills Mafia in the 1990s.

A colorful history between Cox Sr. and Buffalo.

Despite the finger perhaps pointing toward the elder Cox disapproving of his son’s choice, via a conference call after signing with the Bills, Cox Jr. said otherwise.

“It has nothing to do with me personally. My pops is excited just as I am. I’m sure he’d be happy to come to Buffalo, he has no had feelings. He’s just… that was back in the day,” he said.

“I feel like if I come in and produce, none of that matters… I feel like I’ll be embraced,” Cox Jr. added.

After a spell with the Panthers to start his career as an undrafted rookie in 2017, Cox Jr. said he joined the Bills because of defensive line coach Eric Washington, who he built a strong relationship with in Carolina. Cox Jr. then spent a brief time with the Browns last season.

But with his father in mind, is there a way he can personally be helping the Bills moving forward? Cox Jr. said his dad pushing him is his No. 1 motivator as it always has been.

“My pops is my biggest critic, I’ll tell you right now. Even in high school, man… he’d have something negative to say every single time. He’d always say, ‘you do what you do well, so let’s talk about the bad stuff.’ He’s always on me about what I could have done better,” Cox Jr. said.

The circle of life right there.
