Former USC Trojan J.T. Daniels leads Rice over Houston in double OT

J.T. Daniels defeated a Big 12 opponent, one year after quarterbacking West Virginia. What a wild ride.

J.T. Daniels had an enjoyable day on the gridiron this past weekend. He threw for 401 yards and three scores, leading Rice over Houston 43-41 in double overtime in the 42nd Bayou Bucket game.

Daniels finished 28-for-42 passing. He registered his second career 400-yard game. His only other came against Mississippi State in 2020 with the Georgia Bulldogs.

The victory for Rice snapped a seven-game win streak for Houston in the series. The last win for the Owls over Houston came on October 16, 2010, when they beat the Cougars 34-31. This is only the second time a game in the Bayou Bucket series has gone to overtime.

Up next for J.T. Daniels is Texas Southern. The Owls will try to improve to 2-1 after losing to Texas and beating Houston.

Keep an eye on Mr. Daniels, who could have a big year in the American Athletic Conference this season. Rice’s win gave the Owls a victory over a Big 12 opponent. It had to make Daniels feel great about his decision to transfer to Rice.

Texas defense makes life difficult for former USC quarterback J.T. Daniels

J.T. Daniels, the former USC QB who is one of CFB’s most nomadic players, made his Rice Owls debut on Saturday.

J.T. Daniels, who once played quarterback for USC, is one of the most traveled college football players of all time. Now at Rice, his fourth program (USC, Georgia, and West Virginia previously), Daniels is attempting to hit the reset button yet again. He started for Rice in Austin against the homestanding Texas Longhorns on Saturday. It was a predictably rough ride for the nomadic signal-caller.

Rice took the loss to Texas, 37-10. Follow Longhorns Wire for much more coverage of this game. Daniels had 14 completions on 26 attempts, with 149 passing yards, one touchdown, and a pair of interceptions on consecutive second-quarter drives.

Former USC head coach and current Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian had great things to say about J.T Daniels.

I really think this is a perfect fit for J.T.,” Sarkisian said.

“I think it’s a good marriage for J.T. and it’s a great get for Coach Bloomgren and Rice. It creates a lot of challenges that way. They’re not going to run a lot of bad plays schematically.”

The Longhorns prepare for a College GameDay showdown against Alabama next Saturday. (Follow Roll Tide Wire and Longhorns Wire for coverage of that game.) The Rice Owls, meanwhile, return home to Houston. They’ll face the crosstown rival Houston Cougars. Daniels and Company are hoping to snap a seven-game losing streak in the series.

5 things to know about new head coach Mike Rhoades

Penn State has made Mike Rhoades the next head coach of the basketball program. Here are five things to know about Coach Rhoades

It seems like Athletic Director [autotag]Pat Kraft[/autotag] has made his first big hire in his Penn State tenure. After the departure of [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] to Notre Dame, all eyes were on Kraft to see how he would approach finding a replacement.

[autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag] will be named the next head coach of the Penn State basketball program, leaving VCU after six seasons.

After an amazing March that was highlighted by a Big Ten Championship appearance and first round victory in the NCAA Tournament, it was clear there is a basketball fanbase at Penn State. These fans have been clamoring for the school to take basketball more seriously and put resources into the program.

Kraft said that he is willing to prioritize the basketball program. Those words were going to be tested after the Shrewsberry seemingly left for greener pastures in South Bend.

On the surface, it looks like Kraft delivered on his statement. Hiring Rhoades away from a strong mid-major program shows a commitment to getting top talent. It’s reported that Rhoades will be paid more than $3 million per year, double what his salary was at VCU.

With the new head coach set in stone, here are five things to know about Mike Rhoades.

Photo Gallery: Ducks’ hoops season continue with decisive win over Rice

Photo Gallery: Rice was able to stay within shouting distance of the Ducks for one half before the Oregon defense took over.

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team knew coming into their WNIT second-round game that Rice would be a tougher opponent than their first-round matchup with North Dakota State.

They were right … for a half.

Oregon held on to a slim 34-31 halftime lead but then turned on the press and forced the Owls into six third-quarter turnovers and outscored Rice 23-9 to blow the game wide open inside Matthew Knight Arena.

Now in the super 16, the Ducks host San Diego with the hopes of advancing into the quarterfinals where they could play a familiar foe in Washington. But a lot has to occur for that game to come to fruition.

WBB recap: Ducks pressure Rice into turnovers and advance in WNIT

A dominating third quarter helped the Ducks fry Rice 78-53 to advance to the third round of the WNIT.

When the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team decides to turn up the defensive pressure, not many teams can handle it. Rice proved it was incapable of handling the Duck press in the third quarter and what was a close game turned into a rout.

Oregon advanced to the WNIT third round with the 78-53 win over the Owls. A 23-9 third quarter turned a good game into the blowout. The Ducks had three players in double figures and center Phillipina Kyei just missed a triple-double in points, rebounds and blocks. She was dominating inside the paint and Rice never found an answer for the 6-foot-8 Kyei.

Now the Ducks will host San Diego Thursday night as the Toreros defeated UC-Irvine.

WBB recap: Ducks cruise past Bison in first round of the WNIT

Oregon advances to the second round of the WNIT with a 39-point blowout over North Dakota State.

For the first 10 minutes, the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team looked like they hadn’t played in over a week.

But then the Ducks turned on the jets and blitzed North Dakota State 96-57 to advance to the second round of the WNIT where they will host Rice.

The first quarter seemingly featured two evenly matched teams as the Ducks held just a slim 19-15 lead. That was a mirage. Oregon outclassed the Bison for the remaining 30 minutes to win by 39 points in front of 2,703 fans.

Those who showed up to Matthew Knight Arena definitely liked what they saw. Te-Hina Paopao continued to play great as she has been for the past month. Grace VanSlooten seems to be over her ankle injury and Ahlise Hurst has found her shooting prowess.

They also witnessed a little past glory as Endyia Rogers simulated Sabrina Ionescu with a triple-double of her own with 10 points, 11 boards, and 11 assists.

Sooners offer 3-star 2024 tackle Bennett Warren

Oklahoma continues to send out offers for the class of 2024, offering three-star offensive tackle Bennett Warren.

Oklahoma’s recruiting focus is firmly set on the 2024 class. They’re days from welcoming their 2023 early enrollees on campus. While the 2023 recruiting ride was fun, but to be considered elite, they must stack top five classes together.

Their most recent offer went to a three-star offensive tackle out of the Houston area, Bennett Warren. Warren is a large young man who will invoke flashbacks to Orlando Brown Jr with his size. He stands 6-foot-8 and is a massive young athlete. Offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh has had success developing players in the mold of Warren and Brown. Brown was named to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time this year.

A quick glance at the young offensive tackle’s offer list suggests he has the attention of the Big 12. He also has offers from TCU, Texas Tech, Kansas, Oklahoma State, and future Big 12 member, BYU.

Rice Owls Preview 2022

It’s SO hard to win at Rice.

Small school, brilliant academics, tough requirements – it takes everything to work right for the program to succeed, and it’s been tough under Mike Bloomgren to build this thing up.

It might not seem like much, but winning the regular season finale against Louisiana Tech last year to get to four wins on the year was great.

The program hadn’t cracked the three-win mark since 2015, and the last winning season was in 2014 with an 8-5 run and a bowl victory.

That year, most of Conference USA had problems – Rice came up with a whole lot of wins over bad teams – and its offense was great, and that’s what has to happen this time around.

And more than that, this is the year to come through with something big before taking off for the American Athletic Conference.

The program is moving up, it’ll get a bigger profile, and it has something to shoot for.

But first, Bloomgren has to win. 11-31 in four years, he has to show that he’s the one to lead the program into the new era. He built the thing up to this point, and now it all has to work.

Rice Owls Preview 2022: Offense

The offense had its moments. Controlling the clock hasn’t been a problem – the Owls were tenth in the nation and No. 1 in Conference USA holding the ball for well over 33 minutes a game – and the passing game was solid as the season went on, but turnovers were a problem and the ground attack has to be stronger.

There are enough parts to be better, but averaging more than 21.5 points per game is a must.

The offensive line has to be stronger. It was good in pass protection, but it needs to blast away a little more around the bulk of 300-pound Clay Servin and 330-pound Faae Pepe on the left side. 311-pound Shea Baker is a solid center.

Leading rusher Ali Broussard is back after averaging close to five yards per carry with 569 yards and three scores, but the offense needs to come up with a good rotation. 5-5, 160-pound Cameron Montgomery is a lightning quick option in space.

The Owls got production from the passing game, but they need consistency out of the position. Veteran Wiley Green will likely take over, but former JUCO transfer TJ McMahon will provide a push.

The receiving corps will be a strength even with top target Jake Bailey bailing for SMU. Cedric Patterson averaged over 15 yards per catch with a team-high six scores, Tulsa transfer Sam Crawford could be a dangerous No. 1 target, and former Nebraska quarterback Luke McCaffrey will be an interesting wide receiver option.

Helping even more is the return of 2019 star target Bradley Rozner, who played only one game over the last two seasons.

Rice Owls Preview 2022: Defense

Rice played lots and lots and lots and lots of guys on defense, and now this is a relatively deep group with more options after struggling throughout last year. The D gave up 36 points and 436 yards per game, but it came up with takeaways and there was a bit of a pass rush.

The top tackler was on the nose. Elijah Garcia is done, but the defense relies on the line to make things happen. Former offensive lineman Izeya Floyd is a 326-pounder who’ll take over on the inside, and there’s more quickness in the interior from Ikenna Enechukwu – he’s the team’s leading returning sacker with 4.5.

Playmaking LB Antonio Montero left for Villanova and Desmyn Baker took over for WKU. Aidan Siano got his feet wet last year and should work in the middle, but the D needs big plays from Kenneth Orji and Treshawn Chamberlain on the outside.

There weren’t a lot of picks from the corners, but Jordan Dunbar, Sean Fresch, and Miles McCord combined to make a whole lot of plays to go along with the rough days against the better downfield attacks. Sophomore S Gabe Taylor led the way with three interceptions and made 56 stops – he’ll be a bigger factor.
