WBB Recap: Beavers deny Oregon its upset bid with key plays late

Oregon women’s basketball had a chance to shock the world with an upset over OSU, but the defense broke down late in the 64-60 loss.

It’s a game that was there for the taking.

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team is going to look at film on this game and kick themselves as they let a huge upset over No. 18 Oregon State slip away. But it was the Beavers that escaped Matthew Knight Arena with a 64-60 win in front of 8,602 fans.

Not a whole lot has gone right for the Ducks this season, but they found themselves down just one at 54-53 with 4:30 left in the contest. But the Beavers took advantage of some huge holes in Oregon’s 2-3 zone to go on an 8-2 run in two minutes to pull away.

Phillipina Kyei led the Ducks with 16 points and 18 rebounds, while Grace VanSlooten added 14 points. Chance Gray poured in 15 points on 6-of-15 from the field.

Timea Gardiner had a career-high 19 points for the Beavers with Raegan Beers adding 14 and Talia Von Oelhoffen scoring 10 points. But it was Lily Hansford’s two long-range bombs on consecutive possessions late in the game that was too much for the Ducks to overcome.

Hansford shoots over 50 percent from the three-point line and somehow she was the one left open in the zone and the left-hander knocked down the big shots.

Oregon State threatened to run the Ducks out of the building early as they took a 26-15 lead in the second quarter. Oregon’s offense wasn’t hitting on any cylinders and the Beavers were finding their way. But a 10-0 Duck run towards the halftime break brought them back into the contest and it was just 30-25 OSU after 20 minutes of action.

With the loss, the Ducks now have a losing overall record at 11-12. Oregon State continues its hot play as it improves to 18-3 overall and 7-3 in Pac-12 play.

It’s not going to get any easier for the Ducks as they now travel to the Mountain schools with No. 6 Colorado next on the docket on Friday.

WBB Recap: Ducks let an upset over Utah slip through their fingers

Oregon saw its eight-point halftime lead evaporate and No. 16 Utah avoided an upset in Eugene 58-48.

Utah came into tonight’s game against Oregon averaging 86 points a game and it’s a big reason why the Utes are No. 16 in the nation.

When it was halftime, Utah had 21 and the Ducks had a huge upset within their grasp.

But by the time the third quarter ended, Oregon’s 29-21 halftime lead was completely erased as the Utes outscored the Ducks 22-7 and held a 43-36 lead.

Oregon pulled to within three in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t get over the hump and Utah escaped with a 58-48 win.

This was a victory not only did this Duck team need, but the program as a whole and unfortunately they couldn’t muster enough offense. Oregon is now 11-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play with No. 3 Colorado next.

The loss wasted a great game from Phillipina Kyei who led all scorers with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Chance Gray added 18 points, but no other Duck could approach double figures.

In the second half, the Utes broke down the Ducks 2-3 zone and found open 12-foot jumpers, mostly from Alissa Pili. She scored all 16 of her points after halftime as the Ducks never adjusted to her becoming hot from the field.

The Utes were just 4-of-20 from three-point land in the first half, but in the second half, the Utes were 4-of-10, including three straight which brought them back in the game during that big third quarter.

Oregon doesn’t have much time to get over the defeat as No. 3 Colorado looms on Sunday. The Buffaloes won’t come into Matthew Knight Arena happy campers as they are coming off an upset loss to the Beavers in Corvallis.

WBB Recap: Slow start costs Oregon a possible upset on The Farm

After falling down 20-0, the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team plays No. 8 Stanford almost even on the road.

If only they could just erase those first six minutes.

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team fell down 20-0 to No. 8 Stanford on the road and although they made a valiant effort the rest of the way, the Cardinal came away with an 88-63 win.

It was a historic victory for Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer as she collected win No. 1,202, which ties her with former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski for all-time wins in college basketball.

For Oregon, however, it was just another loss down on The Farm, a place the Ducks have won just three times in their history. They fell to 11-8 overall and 2-4 in Pac-12 play.

The game was over in that initial 20-0 run, but then Stanford’s All-American Cameron Brink injured her knee and didn’t come back rest on the night. With Stanford’s post player out, the Ducks went on a 15-2 run and cut that deficit in half at the end of the first quarter at 25-15.

Oregon eventually cut the lead to eight, but could never make a further dent in the deficit. The Ducks could have easily thrown in the towel, but they kept on playing and gained confidence which will hopefully carry over to the next game at California on Sunday.

Chance Gray led the Ducks with 19 points on 6-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-5 from three-point land. Phillipina Kyei was the only other Duck in double figures with 14 points.

The Ducks will next battle the Bears on Sunday for a noon tip-off.

WBB Recap: Ducks get defensive in big 30-point win over Southern

WBB Recap: Oregon overwhelms Southern 67-37 with a big first half and a career night for Phillipina Kyei.

All the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team needed was a little home cooking.

The Ducks won their third straight game with a 67-37 win over Southern to improve to 7-3 for the season. Oregon defeated Idaho and Portland State on back-to-back days this past weekend.

Southern dropped to 1-7 on the year.

Unlike in their previous two games, the Ducks were able to put the Jaguars away fairly early in the contest. They took a 36-19 halftime lead and cruised in the second half.

Phillipina Kyei led the Ducks with 16 points and a career-high 21 rebounds. Grace VanSlooten and Chance Gray each added 15 points for Oregon. They each had five assists.

Southern didn’t have anyone in double figures, but Sky Castro did lead the Jags with eight points.

Oregon will end its four-game homestand on Sunday, Dec. 17 when the Ducks host Texas-San Antonio. After that, the Ducks will head to St. George, Utah to play in the Trailblazer Classic where Oregon will face Utah Tech Dec. 19 and Oklahoma State Dec. 21.

Pac-12 play finally gets underway New Year’s Eve with the Civil War in Corvallis.

Photo Gallery: Ducks’ hoops season continue with decisive win over Rice

Photo Gallery: Rice was able to stay within shouting distance of the Ducks for one half before the Oregon defense took over.

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team knew coming into their WNIT second-round game that Rice would be a tougher opponent than their first-round matchup with North Dakota State.

They were right … for a half.

Oregon held on to a slim 34-31 halftime lead but then turned on the press and forced the Owls into six third-quarter turnovers and outscored Rice 23-9 to blow the game wide open inside Matthew Knight Arena.

Now in the super 16, the Ducks host San Diego with the hopes of advancing into the quarterfinals where they could play a familiar foe in Washington. But a lot has to occur for that game to come to fruition.

WBB recap: Ducks pressure Rice into turnovers and advance in WNIT

A dominating third quarter helped the Ducks fry Rice 78-53 to advance to the third round of the WNIT.

When the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team decides to turn up the defensive pressure, not many teams can handle it. Rice proved it was incapable of handling the Duck press in the third quarter and what was a close game turned into a rout.

Oregon advanced to the WNIT third round with the 78-53 win over the Owls. A 23-9 third quarter turned a good game into the blowout. The Ducks had three players in double figures and center Phillipina Kyei just missed a triple-double in points, rebounds and blocks. She was dominating inside the paint and Rice never found an answer for the 6-foot-8 Kyei.

Now the Ducks will host San Diego Thursday night as the Toreros defeated UC-Irvine.

Oregon hosts North Dakota State in WNIT first round matchup

The Oregon women’s basketball team opens the WNIT with a home game with North Dakota State on Friday.

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team will continue their season Friday as they will host North Dakota State. Tip time is scheduled for 7 pm PST at Matthew Knight Arena.

If the Ducks win, they’ll play either BYU or Rice in the second round.

The Bison come to Eugene with an 18-11 record. They lost in the Summit League title game to Kansas City 71-64. Before that loss, NDSU had a winning streak of four straight.

Their leading scorer is Heaven Hamling, who averages 16.5 points, five rebounds and nearly four assists a game. She shoots 35 percent from the three-point line and 83 percent from the free-throw stripe.

The only other Bison player who averages in double figures is Elle Evans and her 13.3 points per contest. She happens to be the Bison’s tallest player at 6-foot-3 but is listed as a guard. She’ll be the toughest to match up with for the Ducks.

Oregon will have a major height advantage with 6-foot-8 Phillipina Kyei, 6-foot-7 Kennedy Basham, and 6-foot-3 Grace VanSlooten.

Broadcast information has not been announced yet.

Oregon WBB recap: Ducks take out their frustrations on the Trojans

Oregon got back to its winning ways with a 28-point victory over USC on New Year’s Day.

It’s not often the Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team has a three-game losing streak staring at them in the face. But after losing their past two contests, Oregon was in danger of just that.

The Ducks don’t have to worry about a losing streak any longer as they got defensive and disposed of USC. Oregon is now 11-3 overall and 2-1 in Pac-12 play. As for the Trojans, this was just their third defeat of the year as they fell to 11-3 and 1-2 in conference action.

Endyia Rogers led the Ducks with 19 points and Taya Hanson came off the bench for her best night as a Duck with 17 points. Phillipina Kyei cleaned up the glass with 20 rebounds.

Oregon WBB recap: Ducks ground the Pilots with pressure defense

Oregon explodes for 33 points in the third quarter to run away from Portland 90-51.

Portland’s game plan was to press and pressure the Oregon women’s basketball team for turnovers and easy hoops on the other end.

The Pilots didn’t figure the Ducks (6-1) would turn the tables.

Oregon forced 21 turnovers and scored 32 points off of those turnovers to cruise to an easy 90-51 win over Portland of the West Coast Conference.

Freshman Chance Gray led Oregon with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, including knocking down 4-of-8 from long distance. Phillipina Kyei added 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Te-Hina Paopao scored 10 pounds and dished out eight assists while Taylor Hosendove came off the bench and just missed out on a double-double with nine points and 10 boards.

It was a close game at halftime as the Ducks led 40-29, but then put it all together in the second half and routed the Pilots, who fell to 5-4 on the season.

Oregon WBB recap: Ducks grow up with a big win over Spartans

The Oregon women’s basketball team played a complete game Sunday morning with an 86-78 win over Michigan State.

The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team had No. 8 North Carolina on the ropes, but they couldn’t close out the deal.

They closed the game this time.

Oregon defeated Michigan State 86-78 to grab third place in the PK Invitational in Portland Sunday morning. The Ducks showed why they will be a dangerous team to prepare for once the Pac-12 schedule comes into play.

Phillipina Kyei dominated on the inside with a career-high 15 points and 16 rebounds and Endyia Rogers led Oregon with 19 points on 5-of-8 from downtown.

The freshman Grace VanSlooten added 12 points and seven boards as Oregon shot nearly 54 percent from the field.

It was a nice win for the athletic department as a whole as the men’s basketball team has yet to win in the PK 85 and the football team lost in Corvallis yesterday. Oregon needed a win, any win, and Kelly Graves’ team got the job done Sunday morning.
