Sunday Hash: Gnawing on how Gators got grilled by LSU Tigers

Pat Dooley dissects the state of Florida football after a disappointing loss to LSU in the Swamp on Saturday night.

Here’s a solution to the problem that Florida football has with the LSU Tigers: Don’t make it such a big deal when the Gators play the Tigers at home.

Seriously, it’s as simple as that.

It’s great for marketing but Florida has tried everything — including homecoming and Tom Petty Day – and still has lost four of the last five games against the Tigers in the Swamp.

Maybe that explains the defensive issues Saturday night inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Maybe they were too hyped and the Gators psyched themselves out. Or maybe this is a bad defense.

Let’s decide in this edition of Sunday Hash.

Players of the game: Michigan vs. Penn State

Dominant performance on Saturday! #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It was quite the game from Michigan football on Saturday.

In a game that matched a pair of unbeaten, the Wolverines dominated against Penn State. Michigan defeated the Nittany Lions 41-17 and that score didn’t reflect the beating that the maize and blue put on them,

Michigan outgained Penn State 563 to 268 on Saturday. The Wolverines had 28 first downs compared to 10 for the Nittany Lions. Lastly, Michigan rushed for 418 yards on the No. 5 run defense.

The duo of Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards found themselves running through some massive holes that the Wolverines’ offensive line gave them. Edwards ran for 173 yards while Corum rushed for 166 yards.

After every game we award three offensive and three defensive players as our six players of the game for Michigan.

You can see who was awarded that below.

Big Ten power rankings after Week 7: A new No. 1 rises, once again

Is the conference back to the big two and little 12?

Ten of the Big Ten’s 14 teams were in action Saturday, and a couple of teams made a statement.

Michigan football absolutely annihilated previously undefeated Penn State, the No. 10 team in the nation. Illinois made another case that it should be ranked after downing Minnesota at home. Michigan State broke its four-game losing streak by beating Wisconsin in double overtime, Maryland survived its home game against Indiana, and Purdue held on against Nebraska.

Ohio State, Rutgers, Northwestern and Iowa were on bye weeks.

Now with another week in the books in the Big Ten, we have a new No. 1, once again. Check out our latest Big Ten power rankings after Week 7.

Big Ten football power rankings after Week 7: The gap at the top narrows.

How did Michigan’s win over Penn State in Week 7 change our Big Ten football power rankings? #B1G

Each week, we try to make sense of the Big Ten and how the action on the field of play shifts the football power in the league. The West division has been anyone’s guess on a weekly basis, but Purdue and Illinois made an important move forward with both winning to stay at the top.

The East is another story. Michigan and Ohio State seem to have separated themselves, especially after the Wolverines’ dismantling of Penn State over the weekend while the Buckeyes sat idly by during a week when they are resting and recuperating.

It all sets up for a stretch run that should be about as entertaining as what we’ve seen in the Big Ten in a long, long time — one in which maybe the league can have two teams in the running for the College Football Playoff.

But enough about that, here’s a look at the power ranking of all fourteen teams in the league after Week 7. A week in which Michigan made a bold and resounding statement.

PHOTOS: Highlights from Florida’s home loss against LSU Tigers

Here’s a look at the best highlights from LSU’s mauling of Florida in the Swamp.

It was an outcome that most did not expect, both in the victory as well as the total points scored between the Florida Gators and LSU Tigers Saturday in the Swamp. The two schools combined for 80 points in a shootout that ultimately favored the visitors, 45-35.

The story of this game was how Billy Napier’s boys were unable to stop the Bayou Bengals on offense, forcing just one punt while allowing the Tigers to trample them on their own turf. Florida’s offense was able to keep pace early on but could simply not keep up with the yardage the defense surrendered to the opponent.

Quarterback Anthony Richardson finished with some fine numbers, though they were inflated by big plays that mask his overall ineffectiveness as he struggled to find a rhythm once again. The ground game held its own as well though the absence of offensive lineman O’Cyrus Torrence was definitely felt.

Take a look below at highlights from Florida football’s Week 7 loss to LSU in Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Pat Dooley’s Six Pack: Quick takes from LSU’s continued dominance over Florida

Pat Dooley gives his quick takes from Florida’s disappointing loss to LSU.

Billy Napier has changed a lot about Florida football.

One thing he hasn’t changed is that LSU still owns the Gators.

The Tigers made it four in a row and 10 of the last 13 as Florida again had no answer for the Tigers’ offense. New coaches on both sides? Didn’t matter.

It was hardly the way you want to celebrate Tom Petty Day in the Swamp.

LSU defeated the Gators 45-35 and sent Napier’s first team into the bye week with a 4-3 record, 1-3 in the SEC.

These guys have a long way to go.

Let’s look back on a night that was supposed to be memorable, but didn’t end up that way with the Dooley Six Pack.

SEC power rankings after a fantastic weekend of SEC football

Seriously, is there anything better than college football?

What a game we saw in Knoxville between Tennessee and Alabama. Rocky Top is indeed back after the Vols snapped a 15 game losing streak to the Crimson Tide with a 52-49 win. Georgia handled business, beating an improved Vanderbilt team 55-0 in Athens. Auburn made things exciting against Ole Miss, but the Rebels beat the Tigers 48-34. KJ Jefferson of Arkansas returned to help the Razorbacks to a 52-35 win over BYU. Jayden Daniels accounted for six touchdowns in an LSU win over Florida. And with Will Levis back, Kentucky took down Mississippi State to move both teams to 5-2.

Texas A&M, South Carolina and Missouri had the week off.
