(This story was updated to add new information.)

The 2024 NFL trade deadline has come and gone, and it didn’t go without a few moves from the Carolina Panthers.

Last week, the team shipped off wideout Diontae Johnson to the Baltimore Ravens in a trade involving a late-round pick swap for the 2025 draft. And yesterday, in a much more favorable return, they sent fellow receiver Jonathan Mingo over to the Dallas Cowboys.

Panthers waive RB Spencer Brown off injured reserve

The Panthers have reached an injury settlement with RB Spencer Brown.

The Carolina Panthers have severed ties with running back Spencer Brown.

Per the league transaction wire, the team and the 25-year-old rusher have reached an injury settlement as of Wednesday. Brown, in turn, has been waived off injured reserve—where he landed alongside offensive lineman Ilm Manning and Raequan Williams earlier in the week.

A Warrior, Ala. native, Brown attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham from 2017 to 2020. Over his four seasons there, he ran for 4,011 yards and 41 touchdowns on 858 carries (4.7 yards per attempt).

Brown then signed on with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2021. He has appeared six games, all between the 2021 and 2022 seasons—where he amassed 43 rushing yards on nine attempts.

With the departure of Brown, Carolina now carries seven running backs on their current 89-man roster. Those players are as follows:

  • Raheem Blackshear
  • Mike Boone
  • Jonathon Brooks
  • Chuba Hubbard
  • Rashaad Penny
  • Miles Sanders
  • Jalen Shirden

Per the league’s transaction wire, running back Spencer Brown, offensive lineman Ilm Manning and defensive lineman Raequan Williams have reverted to the team’s injured reserve after clearing waivers. Each was waived with an injury designation this past Friday to help make room for the addition of this year’s undrafted free agents.

Brown, Manning and Williams were three of the seven players who were released at the start of 2024 rookie minicamp. They were joined by running back Tarik Cohen, wide receiver Jalen Camp, tight end Chris Pierce and cornerback AJ Parker.

Carolina signed the following undrafted free agents upon the departures:

Panthers sign 11 players to future deals on Monday

The Panthers have signed 11 members of their practice squad to future deals.

Carolina Panthers assistant general manager Dan Morgan began the organization’s transition from Scott Fitterer on Monday.

In addition to signing tight end Stephen Sullivan and defensive linemen Nick Thurman and LaBryan Ray to one-year extensions, the team also brought back 11 practice squad members on future deals.

Here are those 11 players:

Panthers’ initial 2023 practice squad

Here is the Carolina Panthers’ initial 16-man practice squad for the 2023 season:

The Carolina Panthers have officially rounded out their initial practice squad for the 2023 season—adding former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver and Frank Reich draft pick Dezmon Patmon on Tuesday.

So, let’s take a look at the entire (and complete) 16-man group:

Panthers announce 11 signings to initial 2023 practice squad

The Panthers signed the first 11 players to their initial 2023 practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers did plenty of work on Tuesday, making over 20 moves to get their once 90-man roster down to just 53. But, as always, their work was never done.

Next, on Wednesday, came the construction of the team’s initial practice squad. Here, as announced this afternoon, are the first 11 members of the group:

  • RB Spencer Brown
  • G Deonte Brown
  • G J.D. DiRenzo
  • G Justin McCray
  • DL Raequan Williams
  • DL Taylor Stallworth
  • OLB Eku Leota
  • OLB Jordan Thomas
  • CB Mark Milton
  • CB Stantley Thomas-Oliver III
  • S Eric Rowe

With NFL teams allowed to carry 16 players per practice squad, the Panthers will have five more spots to fill in the upcoming days. So expect, especially after the extra cuts and maneuvering throughout the league on Wednesday, some more additions soon.

As for who those additions may be, Carolina could look to bring back the trio of players they just waived in quarterback Matt Corral, wide receiver Derek Wright and linebacker Chandler Wooten.

Panthers cutting DL Raequan Williams

The Panthers are cutting summer standout Raequan Williams.

The release of former Pro Bowl linebacker Deion Jones wouldn’t prove to be the only surprise cut for the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday.

As first reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, the team is letting go of defensive lineman Raequan Williams.

Williams cracked into the NFL back in 2020, as an undrafted free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Chicago, Ill. native and Michigan State University product lasted a pair of seasons in the City of Brotherly Love, where he appeared in seven games with one start during the 2021 campaign.

After an offseason stay with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022, Williams signed on to the Panthers’ practice squad on Oct. 18 of that season. He wouldn’t play as an active member of the roster, but was inked to a reserve/future contract on Jan. 9, 2023.

The 6-foot-4, 305-pounder figured to factor into Carolina’s plans on defense, especially with a strong summer as well as the departure of nose tackle Marquan McCall. Williams totaled three pressures (1.0 sack) over 91 defensive snaps this preseason.
