Sights and sounds from first half as Eagles hold a 21-14 lead over the Commanders

A solid backup quarterback is the most important thing to an NFL team, and Kenny Pickett finally had his moment after Jalen Hurts was forced to exit with a concussion. The former Steelers first-round pick had one ugly interception but made some big throws as Philadelphia went into the half with a 2-14 lead.

An Eagles win would give Nick Sirianni, the head coach, his second NFC East title in four years.

Here are sights and sounds from the first half.

NFL reveals officiating mistake with fines for Steelers-Eagles fight

The NFL’s fines after the Steelers-Eagles fight expose officiating errors from Week 15’s heated altercation.

It appears the NFL is attempting to right the wrong from the terrible officiating on the penalty resulting from the Week 15 skirmish between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles.

The fight in question saw Steelers TE Darnell Washington take his blocking assignment a little too far, Eagles CBs Darius Slay Jr. and Quinyon Mitchell throw haymakers, and Steelers WR Calvin Austin III defend his teammate. However, the NFL initially only penalized the Black and Gold, claiming they had not seen any punches thrown by Philadelphia. Footage emerged following the game, clearly showing Slay punching Washington.

Almost a week later, the NFL has seemingly realized its mistake while handing out fines. While Austin and Washington were also fined—$6,173 and $6,760 respectively—it is nowhere close to the amount Mitchell and Slay are being charged, with both fined $14,069 each for their involvement.

Did the NFL do enough to correct the awful call from the Steelers-Eagles game? One could argue they did, but it’s a mistake that may have contributed to the Black and Gold’s loss.

NFL GMs and executives submit their picks for Defensive Rookie of the Year

NFL GMs and execs were polled on various awards and there was a clear favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year

When it comes to Defensive Rookie of the Year, it’s going to be a neck-and-neck race to the finish line in the final three weeks. Jared Verse had been the favorite to win the award since Week 3, but Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell overtook him in Week 15 and is now viewed as the top candidate for the award.

Members of the media will submit their votes soon and the winner will be crowned in February, but there’s no clear-cut choice as of now. It could be Verse, Mitchell or even Chop Robinson. Heck, Braden Fiske could give it a run if he shines in the last three games.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network polled general managers and executives from around the league to get their take on who will win various awards, including Defensive Player of the Year.

Verse was the top choice for that award, receiving 15 votes. That was nine more than the next-closest player, who was Mitchell with six votes. Fiske received three votes, Mike Sainristil of the Commanders got one vote, as did Texans safety Calen Bullock.

The 19th overall pick, Verse received 15 votes — evidence of what a force he has been in the Rams’ recovery from a 1-4 start to regain control of the NFC West. He has 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. He leads all rookies in tackles for loss (11) and QB hits (17).

Verse has gone quiet in recent weeks, failing to record a single sack or tackle for a loss in his last five games. But he’s still having a huge impact as a pass rusher, notching 20 total pressures in those five contests – including 15 in his last three games alone.

NFL executives view him as the favorite, which he should be. His sack numbers may not be eye-popping, but neither are any other rookie’s – including Mitchell, who has zero interceptions.

Eagles CB Quinyon Mitchell is the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year

Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell is now the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year over Rams Jared Verse

The Eagles hit the jackpot when they could draft Quinyon Mitchell at No. 22 overall in the 2024 NFL draft without moving up. A Week 1 starter, Mitchell has transformed Philadelphia’s top-ranked defense and played a significant role in shutting down some of the NFL’s top wide receivers.

On the heels of the Eagles winning ten straight games and defeating the Steelers 27-13 on Sunday, Mitchell is now the betting favorite to win the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

BetMGM says Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell has overtaken Rams pass rusher Jared Verse as the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. It’s still an incredibly close race, but Verse’s grip on the award is slipping away slightly.

Mitchell is +105 ($100 bet wins $105) to take home the hardware, while Verse is +135. Chargers standout Tarheeb Still has the third-best odds at +900, followed by Chop Robinson at +1000. Everyone else is +3500 or longer to win.

  • Quinyon Mitchell: +105
  • Jared Verse: +135
  • Tarheeb Sill: +900
  • Chop Robinson: +1000
  • Laiatu Latu: +3500
  • Cooper DeJean: +3500
  • Calen Bullock: +4000
  • Payton Wilson: +6600
  • Kamari Lassiter: +6600
  • Braden Fiske: +6600

Philadelphia’s two rookies in the top six speak to Howie Roseman’s dedication to making a much-needed personnel change in the Eagles’ revamped secondary.

Jared Verse is no longer the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year

Jared Verse is losing his grip on the Defensive Rookie of the Year award after being the favorite for most of the season. Here’s who overtook him.

Jared Verse opened the season with the third-best odds to win Defensive Rookie of the Year, trailing only Dallas Turner and Laiatu Latu. He was a popular pick among analysts because of his tremendous fit with the Los Angeles Rams and his clear path to extensive playing time.

It didn’t take long for Verse to emerge as the favorite to win the award, taking over the top spot after just two weeks. He remained the betting favorite from Week 3 to 15 but with only three games remaining, he no longer has the best odds.

According to BetMGM, Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell has overtaken Verse as the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year. It’s still an incredibly close race, but Verse’s grip on the award is slipping away a little bit.

As of now, Mitchell is +105 ($100 bet wins $105) to take home the hardware, while Verse is +135. Chargers standout Tarheeb Still has the third-best odds at +900, followed by Chop Robinson at +1000. Everyone else is +3500 or longer to win.

  • Quinyon Mitchell: +105
  • Jared Verse: +135
  • Tarheeb Sill: +900
  • Chop Robinson: +1000
  • Laiatu Latu: +3500
  • Cooper DeJean: +3500
  • Calen Bullock: +4000
  • Payton Wilson: +6600
  • Kamari Lassiter: +6600
  • Braden Fiske: +6600

Fiske’s odds have slipped in recent weeks after he climbed up the board, which is understandable considering he hasn’t had a sack or tackle for a loss in his last three games, recording just five total tackles in that span.

Verse’s production has slipped, too. He hasn’t registered a single sack or tackle for a loss in his last five games and he has just three QB hits in that span, all of which came against the Saints.

Both players are still having a tremendous impact for the Rams, but they’re not putting up the numbers that voters will be looking at.

New footage shows officials were wrong in Week 15’s Steelers-Eagles fight

New footage vindicates Steelers fans, proving officiating errors in Pittsburgh’s Week 15 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Oh, how the tables have turned. Fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers were criticized as sore losers for blaming the awful officiating in Week 15’s contest between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Philadelphia Eagles. However, new footage from one key play in the game supports the Black and Gold faithful’s claims.

Early in the first quarter, Steelers WR Calvin Austin and TE Darnell Washington were wrongfully the only players penalized for a fight that broke out with Eagles CBs Quinyon Mitchell and Darius Slay Jr.

HC Mike Tomlin was visibly upset on the sideline following the penalty on his players alone. When asked postgame why the officiating crew made the call, referee Alan Eck stated it was due to a lack of evidence.

However, newly released footage clearly shows that Slay and Mitchell both took shots at Washington and Austin.  This begs the question, how was officiating upstairs unable to catch the penalty in replay assist?

While this is certainly not the first time officials have given the Pittsburgh Steelers the short end of the stick, fans of the Steel City certainly hope it will be the last in 2024.

Sights and sounds from first half as Eagles hold a 17-13 lead over Steelers

Philadelphia established its passing game and was dominant on defense, but the scoreboard tells a different story as the Eagles hold just a 17-13 lead over Pittsburgh after one half.

Vic Fangio’s defense held the Steelers to just 80 yards of offense on 30 plays in the first half, but two costly Eagles turnovers and two Chris Boswell field goals have Mike Tomlin’s team within four.

With the second half set to begin, we’re looking at sights and sounds from the first half.

Mike Tomlin offers some choice words to officials in Week 15

Following a personal foul penalty, Mike Tomlin’s choice words for officials highlighted his frustration during the Steelers-Eagles matchup.

In what can only be described as a chaotic start to Week 15’s contest between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles, head coach Mike Tomlin was clearly heated after watching his team surrender 10 points in the first quarter.

Following a physical altercation between the Steelers and Eagles, Tomlin was visibly frustrated that the officials only penalized Pittsburgh for the fight. Fans could clearly see Eagles cornerback Quinyon Mitchell land a strike on Calvin Austin III, but the officiating crew appeared to miss it.

The personal foul penalty cost the Pittsburgh Steelers 15 yards, and Tomlin made his displeasure known to the officials in no uncertain terms.

Yikes! Players and coaches have been fined for less when it comes to their interactions with officials, and it remains to be seen if the NFL will involve themselves due to Tomlin’s profanity-filled statement directed at the officiating crew.

One thing remains certain, however—it is probably best to leave Tomlin alone when you’re calling a penalty against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

WATCH: Cooper DeJean breaks down why Quinyon Mitchell is Defensive Rookie of the Year

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean breaks down why Quinyon Mitchell should be the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year

Quinyon Mitchell was the first cornerback selected in last April’s NFL draft, and he’s produced at a rate that could make the former Toledo star Howie Roseman’s most impressive draft pick.

Mitchell started in Week 1 and has performed like an All-Pro while shutting down some of the NFL’s top wide receivers. During a recent interview with Whistle’s ‘Air It Out’ with AJ Greene and Justin Pugh, DeJean explained why Mitchell is the Defensive Rookie of the Year.

With DeJean and Mitchell running on all cylinders, the Eagles have the No. 2 pass defense in the NFL. They haven’t allowed a 300-yard passer since Baker Mayfield’s Week 4 explosion in Tampa, only two 100-yard receivers since Week 1—Puka Nacua and Adam Thielen—and just 14 passing touchdowns.

In Sunday’s win over the Carolina Panthers, Mitchell allowed fewer than 30 yards in coverage for the ninth straight game.

Even more impressive, according to PFF, Mitchell is ranked first in the NFL in Receptions allowed: 31 (T-1st), yards allowed: 340 (1st), YAC allowed: 60 (1st), and touchdowns allowed: 0 (1st)

George Pickens injury updates: Steelers WR is doubtful for matchup vs. Eagles

Mike Tomlin says that Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver George Pickens is doubtful for the Week 15 game vs. the Philadelphia Eagles

The Steelers are heading to Philadelphia for a gigantic matchup against the Eagles on Sunday, and Mike Tomlin’s team will likely be without George Pickens.

Similar to situations the Eagles had to deal with regarding A.J. Brown and recently DeVonta Smith, Pickens is dealing with a grade 2 hamstring injury that caused him to miss the Week 14 win over the Browns.

According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, Following a Sunday morning conversation with athletic trainers and wide receiver George Pickens, coach Mike Tomlin opted to make Pickens, who sustained a hamstring injury late in the week, inactive for the Steelers’ 27-14 victory against the Browns on Sunday.

On Tuesday, five days before the Steelers depart for Philadelphia, Tomlin confirmed that Pickens is doubtful for Sunday afternoon.

Pickens has 850 receiving yards and three touchdown catches and would provide a formidable opponent for Eagles cornerbacks Darius Slay and Quinyon Mitchell.

Pittsburgh will play three games in the next 11 days, including another matchup with Baltimore.
