New Ringer mock draft gambles on potential for Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics go all-in on potential in a season they need performance in the present according to a new mock draft by The Ringer.

The Ringer released an updated mock draft today that sees the Boston Celtics trade up, and with all the potential options still on the board, they manage to disappoint with their plans for Boston’s draft options.

The Celtics possess three first round draft picks (Nos. 14, 26 and 30) in this draft as well as a fourth pick late in the second round at No. 47, and at least at present do not have enough roster slots to house them all.

At the same time, given the flatness of the draft after the handful of prospects seen as having star potential are off the board, it hasn’t been a more amenable draft landscape to move back for a team either.

But the Celtics need to hit on one of their picks for a stable, useful rotation players, meaning they can afford to take a big swing with one of the picks on a player who could develop overseas.

But, they cannot afford to develop multiple young prospects while also trying to contend with so many already on the roster — even if they slim down on the youth movement currently on the roster.

So what are we griping about exactly? Let’s take a look.

Precious Achiuwa among 2020 NBA Draft prospects Nets have spoken with

The Brooklyn Nets have interviewed at least three 2020 NBA Draft prospects early on in this year’s NBA Draft Combine.

The 2020 NBA Draft Combine kicked off on Monday, allowing teams to contact this year’s group of prospects.

With the No. 19 pick this year (courtesy of the Philadelphia 76ers), multiple draft analysts have projected RJ Hampton will slip to Brooklyn Nets. However, Hampton revealed on Tuesday that he has yet to hear from Brooklyn.

Maryland forward Jalen Smith, however, is on the other end of the spectrum. The Nets were among the first teams to contact him.

Additionally, the Nets have interviewed University of Memphis forward Precious Achiuwa and Stanford University guard Tyrell Terry.

In his lone year with the Tigers, Achiuwa averaged 15.8 points, 10.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. Terry is also a one-and-done after averaging 14.6 points per game and shooting 40.8% from deep for Stanford this as a freshman.

Patrick Williams, Precious Achiuwa and Tyrese Maxey most common picks for Pelicans in mock drafts

With the Pelicans likely targeting wings and outside shooters, names like Patrick Williams, Precious Achiuwa and Tyrese Maxey come up often.

While the general consensus for the New Orleans Pelicans is that they should target wing and outside shooting prospects in the 2020 NBA Draft. But as is often the case late in the lottery, the exact prospect they should target has varied widely.

HoopsHype’s Bryan Kalbrosky’s latest aggregate mock draft included the most common landing spots for prospects. For the Pelicans, the most common prospects to land at pick No. 13 were Precious Achiuwa of Memphis, Patrick Williams of Florida State and Tyrese Maxey of Kentucky.

Achiuwa and Williams are more natural 3&D players that have been slated to the Pelicans in previous mock drafts. Maxey, though, is less of a 3&D option and another potential guard the team could add to their young core.

Maxey was not a great shooter last season, shooting just 29.2% from range on 3.6 attempts per game. He was, however, strong in transition opportunities at 1.235 points per possession. Transition was the second-most common action for the Pelicans this season, per Synergy. Maxey also was an 86th percentile pick-and-roll player for Kentucky as well.

While those three were the most common, a host of other names were close behind. Aaron Nesmith of Vanderbilt, Saddiq Bey of Villanova and Devin Vassell of Florida State all were mocked to the Pelicans as well. Each would represent a more common 3&D option for New Orleans next season.

As the Pelicans narrow in on prospect targets, it appears likely that 3&D players will be the focus with a host of options available.

New Orleans Pelicans land variety of 3&D players in post-lottery mock drafts

The New Orleans Pelicans’ need for 3&D players in the upcoming draft led to a host of players being projected to them in mock drafts.

The New Orleans Pelicans did not move up in Thursday’s NBA Draft Lottery, staying put with the No. 13 pick. While still having a lottery pick, the Pelicans will be at the back end of the lottery.

Following Thursday’s draft lottery, mock drafts were in abundance from multiple sites and had a common theme for the Pelicans in wing players.

Stadium’s Jeff Goodman had the Pelicans landing Aaron Nesmith, a small forward out of Vanderbilt. Yahoo Sports had the Pelicans drafting a different forward in Precious Achiuwa out of Memphis.

DraftExpress had New Orleans drafting Patrick Williams, a wing player out of Florida State that has been linked in other mock drafts to the Pelicans.

“Williams has tremendous physical tools in terms of size, length and strength, and he is the second-youngest player in this draft class. His shooting indicators are promising, even if he is still a fairly raw player overall on both ends of the floor. Williams’ defensive versatility could be appealing to a New Orleans team that needs to improve on that end, and adding another combo forward could allow Zion Williamson to play more minutes at center.”

The Athletic also had the Pelicans drafting a familiar name in Saddiq Bey out of Villanova.

“The Pelicans don’t really have a ton of needs, so they should just be taking the best player available who can help them on the defensive end and grow with their young core. Bey, for me, is that guy, even though they have Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram across the frontline. You can say that they have guys everywhere, to be honest. Getting another good player is the best thing they can do. Bey’s shooting and defense is a perfect fit.”

The Pelicans’ need for 3&D players is their most obvious one. The team lacked shooters on the wing aside from JJ Redick this season and certainly lacked defenders of any form. Landing a 3&D player in the draft could be a huge boost for the team moving forward.

The agency recently signed Ball’s brother, New Orleans Pelicans guard Lonzo Ball, away from CAA Sports. Roc Nation NBA agent Raymond Brothers is representing both of the Ball brothers. LaMelo Ball, who played last season in Australia on the Illawarra Hawks of the National Basketball League, is ranked No. 3 overall by website nbadraft.net. Brothers is also representing No. 12-ranked Memphis forward Precious Achiuwa.

Memphis freshman forward Precious …

Memphis freshman forward Precious Achiuwa will declare for the NBA Draft, according to multiple reports. The 6-foot-8 freshman is the projected No. 8 pick in the Draft, per ESPN.com. “I’ve decided to declare for the 2020 NBA draft and hire an agent,” Achiuwa told ESPN.com. “This is the next step in my journey and career as a basketball player. I’m really excited for it.”

Achiuwa emerged as the Tigers’ leader …

Achiuwa emerged as the Tigers’ leader after the abrupt departure of James Wiseman. The 6-foot-9 freshman averaged 15.8 points, 10.8 boards, and 1.9 blocks en route to earning ACC Player of the Year honors. He’s an active defender with the length to contest shots from the perimeter and interior. However, Achiuwa experienced issues taking care of the ball in 2019-20, committing the fourth-most turnovers in the AAC.
