Baltimore Ravens workout former UGA football RB Elijah Holyfield following several injuries at the position

Baltimore Ravens are working out former Georgia football running back Elijah Holyfield. The Ravens desperately need help at running back. Baltimore’s Justice Hill just tore his Achilles. The Ravens are already without starting running back J.K. Dobbins, who tore his ACL and is out for the season.

Baltimore is additionally working out NFL veterans Le’Veon Bell and Devonta Freeman. The current projected starting back for the Ravens is Gus Edwards.

The Ravens previously worked out former Georgia Bulldog Todd Gurley this summer.

The Philadelphia Eagles cut Elijah Holyfield on Aug. 29 ahead of the NFL roster cut deadline. The former Georgia Bulldogs running back spent time with their practice squad last season and appeared on their active roster.

Holyfield played college football for three seasons at the University of Georgia. Holyfield went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft and signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers. He made the Panthers practice squad in 2019 and then later signed with the Eagles.

Elijah Holyfield is the son of legendary boxer Evander Holyfield. He’s still looking to carve out a significant NFL career.

Report: Alabama is targeting Jay Valai as cornerbacks coach

Jay Valai could be off to his fourth job in the past month. According to AL.com, Alabama is expected to hire Valai to be their CB coach.

Since the moment Jay Valai was not retained by Steve Sarkisian, the former Texas cornerbacks coach has been on the move. First, he was hired by the University of Houston for the same position. Only 12 days later, it was reported that he would be accepting a coaching role with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Now, Valai could be off to his fourth different job within the past month.

According to Matt Zenitz of AL.com, Alabama is targeting and expected to hire Valai to be their cornerbacks coach. He will be replacing Karl Scott, who recently accepted the defensive backs position with the Minnesota Vikings.

Getting back in the college ranks will help Valai do what he is best at — recruiting. During his time in Austin, the cornerbacks coach was credited with landing five prospects, including J.D. Coffey, Ishmael Ibraheem (both 2021 class), and Jaylon Guilbeau (2022 class).

If Valai does accept the position in Tuscaloosa, it will be another coaching switch between the two programs this offseason. When Sarkisian was hired, A.J. Milwee, Jeff Banks, and Kyle Flood came to Texas from Alabama.

The Philadelphia Eagles cut Elijah Holyfield before the NFL roster deadline. The former Georgia Bulldogs running back has now signed with their practice squad.

Eagles running backs Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, and Corey Clement made the roster over Holyfield. Holyfield will have to be patient on the practice squad. Injuries at the running back position are quite common and with additional players possibly missing time with COVID-19, Holyfield may get his shot.

Holyfield played college football for three seasons at the University of Georgia. He is in his second year in the NFL, but hasn’t seen much playing time. He has zero career NFL carries in stints with both the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles.

Holyfield was undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft and signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers. Much like this season, he made their practice squad after being cut last year and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 31, 2019 after his contract with the Panthers expired.

Now, per Thomas Petersen, Holyfield will be on his next NFL practice squad. Holyfield impressed in training camp.

The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing in former Georgia Bulldog offensive lineman Cordy Glenn for a tryout.

The Philadelphia Eagles are bringing in former Georgia Bulldog offensive lineman Cordy Glenn for a tryout. The Eagles are thin along the offensive line following injuries to offensive linemen Andre Dillard (right bicep, out for 2020 season) and Brandon Brooks (torn Achilles, out for 2020 season).

Cordy Glenn was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of the University of Georgia. He played for several seasons as an offensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills. The Bills then traded him to the Bengals, where he played both tackle and guard. The Bengals released Glenn this March.

Will Glenn play tackle or guard if he plays for the Eagles or makes their roster? That remains to be seen. Jason Peters would be the logical starter for the Eagles at left tackle, but he reportedly wants a pay raise to play the position.

Injuries at running back are almost guaranteed in today’s NFL. Additionally, Holyfield could make a roster if a team has several cases of COVID-19.

NFL comparisons for Titans OT Isaiah Wilson out of Georgia

We list NFL comparisons for former Georgia football and now Tennessee Titans OT Isaiah Wilson.

The Tennessee Titans selected Georgia OT Isaiah Wilson with the 29th pick in the first-round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Wilson was an All-American as a freshman right tackle at Georgia and was bothered by injuries in his sophomore season. At 6-foot-7 340 pounds, Wilson is one of the largest tackles in this years draft.

NFL analyst Lance Zierlein wrote:

“Big, broad right tackle prospect with outstanding physical traits and above-average potential.”

To get an idea on how Wilson will preform at the NFL level, let’s look at two pros that Wilson’s game most resembles.

1. Demar Dotson – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Dotson (6’9″, 315 lbs) is one of the largest tackles in the NFL, but what resembles Wilson the most is his length. Both Wilson and Dotson are able to use their length to keep the pocket clean for their quarterbacks by forcing rushers out wide. 

2. Lane Johnson – Philadelphia Eagles

During Wilson’s career at Georgia, he excelled in run-blocking because of his footwork at his size. One of the best run-blocking tackles in the NFL, Johnson uses his footwork to turn the edge defenders which seals the gap and he also does a great job advancing to the second-level.

The Titans’ offensive line was already one of the best units in the NFL and after drafting Wilson, that trend should continue for years to come.

Patriots activate UGA’s Isaiah Wynn from IR

The New England Patriots have activated former Georgia Bulldog Isaiah Wynn from Injured Reserve.

The New England Patriots have activated former Georgia Bulldog Isaiah Wynn from Injured Reserve. Wynn, New England’s starting left tackle, was placed on IR earlier this season with a toe injury. ESPN’s Field Yates announced the move today via Twitter:

The Patriots placed Wynn on Injured Reserve after they defeated Miami in week two. Wynn was eligible to return in last week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. NFL players must spend at least eight weeks on IR before becoming eligible to return. Teams are now granted two slots for players eligible to return from IR.

New England rookie wide receiver N’Keal Harry returned from IR this week against Philadelphia. The Arizona State product caught three passes for eighteen yards in his debut. New England’s offense hasn’t been playing up to their usual high standards. For now, the Pats’ stout defense is carrying the load.

Wynn and Harry will give Tom Brady and the Patriot offense a much needed boost heading into the last stretch of the regular season. The Patriots can’t activate anybody else from IR moving forward.
