Baker Mayfield claimed by Rams after requesting release from Panthers

The Browns’ former first overall pick has found a new home on the west coast

Former first overall pick of the Cleveland Browns is now off to his third stop in six months as quarterback Baker Mayfield has been claimed off of the waiver wire by the Los Angeles Rams. Los Angeles was listed as one of his top landing spots at Browns Wire yesterday, and now that has come to fruition. Just yesterday, Mayfield requested his release from the Carolina Panthers as he had been phased out by Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker.

With Matthew Stafford’s season likely over, Mayfield may find himself starting again this season as the Rams have had to endure through John Wolford and Bryce Perkins under center in recent weeks. Mayfield is set for free agency after this season, so he has a chance to rebuild his image before hitting the open market once again.

Cardinals should inquire about Pro-Bowl DE Brian Burns’ availability

The Cardinals must pick up the phone if Brian Burns becomes available from the Panthers.

While the Arizona Cardinals’ Week 5 loss was heartbreaking, things could be much worse. The Carolina Panthers, whom the Cardinals beat in Week 4, appear to be set for a full rebuild following the early firing of head coach Matt Rhule and defensive coordinator Phil Snow. Former Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks takes over on an interim basis.

With the coaching move and change of direction, the natural thing is to ask which players might be headed out in a rebuild.

That brings us to edge rusher Brian Burns, who is just 24 years old and is in line for a contract extension. The Panthers could possibly move Burns if a team like the Cardinals were willing to part with a premium draft pick.

Burns had nine sacks last season and was selected to the Pro Bowl. He is a disruptive edge rusher whose impact in 2021 goes beyond his sack numbers. Any team who is acquiring Burns is getting a talented edge rusher for the next half-decade.

Under Steve Keim, the Cardinals have acquired a starting-caliber player before the trade deadline in each of the past three seasons. If the Panthers are willing to part ways with Burns, it gives this front office a chance to find their long-term heir apparent to Chandler Jones.

Burns has his fifth-year option picked up for next season and is then set to be a free agent in 2023. The Cardinals would need to give him a long-term extension as part of the trade or this upcoming offseason.

There are some who believe the Los Angeles Rams would be in play for Burns if he is indeed available. That would only make beating their division rival more difficult.

The Cardinals have a short and long-term need at edge rusher. They have the draft picks (unlike the Rams) and the long-term cap for an extension. Acquiring Burns also blocks him from going to another NFC contender. It seems too perfect to be true.

The asking price is likely very high for Burns. It’s possible the Cardinals would have to part ways with their first-round pick for the Pro Bowl edge rusher.

If the Cardinals can make their way back to 3-3 this weekend and then add DeAndre Hopkins and Brian Burns to the mix, they could be in for some major improvements.

Philadelphia Eagles sign Elijah Holyfield to practice squad

The former Georgia Bulldogs running back has now signed with the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad.

The Philadelphia Eagles cut Elijah Holyfield before the NFL roster deadline. The former Georgia Bulldogs running back has now signed with their practice squad.

Eagles running backs Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, and Corey Clement made the roster over Holyfield. Holyfield will have to be patient on the practice squad. Injuries at the running back position are quite common and with additional players possibly missing time with COVID-19, Holyfield may get his shot.

Holyfield played college football for three seasons at the University of Georgia. He is in his second year in the NFL, but hasn’t seen much playing time. He has zero career NFL carries in stints with both the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles.

Holyfield was undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft and signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers. Much like this season, he made their practice squad after being cut last year and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 31, 2019 after his contract with the Panthers expired.

Now, per Thomas Petersen, Holyfield will be on his next NFL practice squad. Holyfield impressed in training camp.

Elijah Holyfield is the son of legendary boxer Evander Holyfield.

Philadelphia Eagles cut former Georgia Bulldogs RB

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a dozen roster cuts ahead of the upcoming NFL roster deadline including former UGA RB Elijah Holyfield.

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a dozen roster cuts ahead of the upcoming NFL roster deadline. Unfortunately, for Georgia Bulldogs fans, former running back Elijah Holyfield did not make the roster.

Holyfield played for three seasons at the University of Georgia. He is entering into his second year in the NFL, but hasn’t seen much playing time. He has zero NFL carries in his career.

Holyfield was undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft and signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers. He made their practice squad after being cut Sept. 1 last year and eventually signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on Dec. 31, 2019 after his contract with the Panthers expired.

Here’s what Eagles Wire had to say about his cut and Holyfield’s future hopes with the Eagles.

Elijah Holyfield made strides and had a solid camp but with the Eagles focused on running backs who are talented pass catchers, Holyfield is likely to land on the practice squad.

Being a pass-catching running back, who is versatile is essential in the modern NFL. Holyfield will look to get another opportunity following an injury. Injuries at running back are almost guaranteed in today’s NFL. Additionally, Holyfield could make a roster if a team has several cases of COVID-19.

Ex-Carolina Panther, L.A. Charger Thomas Davis joining new team

Thomas Davis, a former Carolina Panther and Los Angeles Charger, is signing with the Washington Redskins. Davis is a former Georgia Bulldog.

Thomas Davis, a former Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers linebacker, has found a new home with the Washington Redskins in NFL Free Agency. Davis is reuniting with his former coach in Carolina, Ron Rivera.

The Panthers originally drafted Thomas Davis, a Georgia Bulldog, in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft. The Los Angeles Chargers recently cut Davis, who then became a free agent and signed with Washington. Davis announced the move via his Instagram account:

The Washington Redskins are getting a veteran leader in Thomas Davis, who has battled back to become an elite-level linebacker despite three ACL surgeries. The Redskins defense will be fun to watch in 2020, especially if they add Ohio State’s Chase Young with their number two overall selection.

Davis, who will be 37 years old later this month, can still play high-level football:

Will Thomas Davis and Ron Rivera be able to re-kindle some of the magic that helped the duo make Super Bowl fifty? The Redskins are candidates to go from worst to first in 2020.

Former Georgia football star Thomas Davis buys arena football team

Former Georgia football and Carolina Panthers star Thomas Davis teams up with Ted Ginn to a buy a Charlotte arena football team.

Georgia great Thomas Davis announced on Instagram that he and former Panthers teammate Ted Ginn have purchased the Charlotte Thunder arena football team.

This year, the team changed its name from the Carolina Energy to the Charlotte Thunder. The team competes in the American Arena League, which was formed by a merger in 2018.

Davis played for the Carolina Panthers from 2005-18, where he and his family made Charlotte his home. Ginn was Davis’ teammate in 2013 and then again in 2015 and 2016.

On March 13, 2019, Davis signed a two-year, $10.5 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Davis was a monster at Georgia, and though he made his NFL earnings as a linebacker for the Carolina Panthers, he actually played safety in Athens before becoming a first round pick. One of the hardest hitters in school history, Davis was a two-time All-SEC selection, making the second team in 2003 and the first team in 2004. Also, if that’s not enough, the dude has come back from three torn ACLs in the same knee. And you know who he credits his perseverance to? UGA.

After being released by the Chiefs, Wilson signed with the Rams, starting four games and playing in all sixteen during last season’s Super Bowl run.

This season, he has mostly been with the Arizona Cardinals.
