Here’s what Chiefs HC Andy Reid saw from Jerrion Ealy at rookie minicamp

Jerrion Ealy was one of four eligible veterans to participate in the #Chiefs’ rookie minicamp.

Kansas City Chiefs fans probably remember Jerrion Ealy’s rookie season for the number of times he was released and re-signed to the practice squad.

Over the past weekend, Ealy had the honor of being one of four eligible veteran players to participate in the team’s rookie minicamp. As a result, he got a chance to show head coach Andy Reid and the rest of the coaching staff just how much he’d progressed since his first season.

Over the weekend he showed off his speed, versatility and mastery of the offense.

“He can kind of do a lot of things for you from return game to wide receiver to running back,” Reid said of Ealy. “He did wide receiver the latter part of last year, so (he’s) real smart (and) quick. He’s not the biggest guy, but he knows how to play the game.”

Last year, Ealy focused on special teams and learning the receiver position. During this rookie minicamp, however, Ealy was used as a running back. Reid said that for the time being the team anticipates using him as a running back, but they have the option to move him around to various spots.

The more you can do, the better chances you have of making the 53-man roster or practice squad in Kansas City. Ealy’s ability to contribute as a return specialist and coverage player, and also as an offensive weapon, could be key to him landing a spot with the Chiefs again.

Chiefs re-sign WR Jerrion Ealy to practice squad, release K Matthew Wright

The #Chiefs have re-signed WR Jerrion Ealy to the practice squad and released K Matthew Wright.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a practice squad transaction to kick off the week following the AFC Championship Game.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice, the Chiefs have again re-signed WR Jerrion Ealy to the practice squad. As I mentioned when the team last released him on Saturday, Ealy’s transaction history is getting a little C.J. Spiller-esque. It’s clear that the team wants to continue developing him, but he also seems to be the easiest play to drop from the practice squad and re-sign at any given time. His latest return to the practice squad comes after injuries struck the wide receiver position in Kansas City during the AFC title game.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs released backup K Matthew Wright from the practice squad. This was his second stint in Kansas City after re-signing with the team ahead of Week 18 when Butker popped up as questionable with a back injury.

In his two games kicking for the Chiefs this season, Wright was practically perfect, going 8-for-8 on extra points and 3-for-4 on field goals. Wright actually held the franchise record for the longest field goal for a week before Butker returned and set the record.

It seems that after Butker’s game-winning kick in the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs have a bit more confidence in the veteran’s ability and chose to cut Wright loose.

Chiefs announce flurry of roster moves ahead of AFC Championship Game

The #Chiefs have activated TE Jody Fortson to the 53-man roster, elevated two players from the practice squad and made two more practice squad transactions.

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced several roster moves ahead of the AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

With an open roster spot following the release of Chris Lammons earlier this week, the Chiefs have activated TE Jody Fortson to the 53-man roster from the team’s injured reserve list. This was a move that Andy Reid had been foreshadowing all week and a welcomed return ahead of the AFC title game.

It wasn’t the only move the team made to add to their roster ahead of the big game on Sunday. The Chiefs also made a pair of practice squad elevations and two more practice squad transactions.

The Chiefs elevated two receivers from the practice squad for the game. This doesn’t necessarily mean both players will be active as we learned last week. They elevated Marcus Kemp and Austin Reiter for the AFC divisional round and neither played. This time around Kemp and Ihmir Smith-Marsette got the call-up to the active roster. Kemp has a greater chance of playing this week given his experience on special teams in the role vacated by Lammons.

In terms of the moves made that won’t impact the AFC Championship Game, the Chiefs have again released WR/RB Jerrion Ealy from the practice squad. He’s approaching C.J. Spiller levels of replaceability at this point.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs added RB La’Mical Perine to the practice squad. Perine’s older cousin, Samaje Perine, plays for the Bengals. Chiefs fans will remember Samaje well from the Week 13 matchup where he had a big day against Kansas City. La’Mical was drafted by the Jets in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL draft out of the University of Florida. He’s spent time in New York, Philly and most recently Miami.

Chiefs re-sign WR Jerrion Ealy to practice squad, cut DE Daniel Wise

The #Chiefs continued to shuffle their practice squad on Tuesday, re-signing WR Jerrion Ealy and terminating the contract of DE Daniel Wise.

The Kansas City Chiefs have continued their shuffling of the practice squad as they opened the practice week on Tuesday. This time, they’re bringing back a player who was suspended by the NFL and has been released from the practice squad twice already this season.

WR Jerrion Ealy is back with the team after his second release just last week to make room for DT Phil Hoskins on the practice squad. He was previously released in December, but he recently re-signed after WR Cornell Powell landed on the practice squad-injured list.

This latest re-signing comes after news that WR Mecole Hardman would not be practicing on Tuesday. Ealy’s presence could suggest that they don’t expect Hardman to return this season.

An undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss, Ealy has been a developmental player for the team with upside on special teams. He’s worked with both the running backs and receivers in Kansas City and has the flexibility to play both positions, but it’s worth noting that he’s only listed as a receiver now on the team’s website. In 2021, Ealy played 12 games for the Rebels, recording 133 carries, 768 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. He added 32 receptions, 218 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs released former Kansas DE Daniel Wise from the practice squad. Wise was signed in the first week of January after the team released WR Bryan Edwards from the practice squad. Keep an eye out over the next few days as Wise could return to the team on a reserve/future deal.

Chiefs sign DT Phil Hoskins to practice squad, cut WR/RB Jerrion Ealy

The #Chiefs made a pair of roster moves on the practice squad on Thursday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a pair of roster moves on their practice squad during the playoff bye week.

The Chiefs have signed former Carolina Panthers DT Phil Hoskins to the practice squad. Hoskins was a former seventh-round 2021 NFL draft pick by the Panthers, selected just six picks after Trey Smith was taken by Kansas City. He played collegiately at the University of Kentucky, where he played under former Chiefs assistant coach Matt House.

Hoskins was released by Carolina just this past week.

The 6-5 and 315-pound defensive tackle has appeared in five games this season, spending time on both the Panthers’ practice squad and active roster. He played nine defensive snaps in Week 18 against the New Orleans Saints, which was his most since Week 1 when he played 16 snaps against Cleveland Browns. Over two seasons in Carolina, he’s recorded six total tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs released WR/RB Jerrion Ealy from the practice squad. Ealy was released from the practice squad on Dec. 27 and re-signed to the practice squad again on Jan. 3. Ealy could later be re-signed on a reserve/future contract with the team.

Chiefs WR Cornell Powell placed on practice squad injured list, Jerrion Ealy re-signed

The #Chiefs made a pair of practice squad transactions ahead of practice on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a pair of roster moves on the practice squad for Week 18, both involving the wide receiver position.

The Chiefs have placed WR Cornell Powell on the practice squad injured list. The 2021 fifth-round draft pick, Powell, has been elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster three times this season (Week 11 through Week 13) when the team was dealing with injuries at the receiver position. He no longer had any standard elevations left for the regular season, but those reset during postseason play.

Powell played three snaps on offense and 28 snaps on special teams in the games he was elevated for this season. He did not record any official statistics during those snaps.

It’s unclear when Powell suffered his injury and what it means for his status as the playoffs draw near. Remember, the Chiefs are also dealing with an injury to Skyy Moore and Mecole Hardman remains on injured reserve pending activation to the 53-man roster. The depth of this position continues to be tested.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs re-signed WR/RB Jerrion Ealy to the practice squad. A former undrafted free agent signing following the 2022 NFL draft, Ealy was released from the practice squad on Dec. 27. Ealy was expected to find his way back to the team on a reserve/future contract as soon as the regular season concluded, but this injury to Powell has him re-joining the practice squad.

Chiefs release RB/WR Jerrion Ealy from practice squad

The #Chiefs have terminated the practice squad contract of RB/WR Jerrion Ealy.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released a former undrafted free agent signing from their practice squad.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Tuesday, the Chiefs have terminated the practice squad contract of RB/WR Jerrion Ealy. The former Ole Miss product signed as an undrafted free agent with Kansas City following the 2022 NFL draft. He played receiver, running back and special teams during the offseason and preseason, finding his way onto the initial practice squad after 53-man roster cuts.

The NFL would suspend Ealy for six games beginning in early October for violating their policy on performance-enhancing substances. He was reinstated following Week 10 of the 2022 NFL season. He didn’t appear in a single game for the Chiefs during the NFL’s regular season.

There is a possibility that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Ealy, as this is the time of the year that teams begin signing players on reserve/futures contracts. The team could later re-sign him on one of those deals if they so choose.

Ealy’s departure opens up a space on the 16-man practice squad for Kansas City as they’ve yet to make a corresponding move. It’s possible that they could bring in a veteran at a position of need for the upcoming playoff run. We’ll keep you apprised of any developments with that practice squad spot as the practice week begins on Wednesday.

Chiefs DE Frank Clark, practice squad RB Jerrion Ealy suspensions officially lifted

#Chiefs DE Frank Clark and RB Jerrion Ealy had their suspensions lifted by the commissioner. They’re free to practice and play with the team in Week 11.

The Kansas City Chiefs are getting a pair of players back from suspension, one player on the practice squad and one on the 53-man roster.

According to the NFL’s official personnel notice on Monday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell officially lifted the suspensions of Chiefs DE Frank Clark and RB Jerrion Ealy. Clark was suspended for two games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, stemming from two 2021 arrests. Ealy was suspended for six games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Ealy will immediately count toward the team’s practice squad, bringing the player total up to 16. They had a free spot available after Matthew Wright was poached by the Steelers. The team clearly views Ealy as a good developmental prospect, staying by the undrafted free agent through this suspension.

As for Clark, the team received a roster exemption from the commissioner. Clark will not count against the 53-man roster limit, at least for the time being, giving the Chiefs some time to make a decision on a corresponding roster move. Expect a corresponding roster move and the activation of Clark to come later this week.

Clark had a breakout performance back in Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers, recording 1.5 sacks in the win. He missed the past two games and the bye week, so he should be fresh for the final eight games of the regular season. That’s important given the stomach issues that have caused him to miss some practice time this season.

Chiefs’ Jerrion Ealy suspended by NFL, Marcus Kemp fills his spot on practice squad

#Chiefs practice squad RB/WR Jerrion Ealy has been suspended by the NFL for violating their performance-enhancing substances policy. KC has signed WR Marcus Kemp in his place on the practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs have brought back a familiar face on the practice squad, but they’ve also lost a practice squad player for six games.

According to the NFL’s personnel notice for Monday, Chiefs practice squad WR/RB Jerrion Ealy has been suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. An undrafted free agent out of Ole Miss, Ealy was released during 53-man roster cuts and signed to the practice squad promptly after. He’s been a developmental player for the team with upside on special teams. He’ll move to the reserve/suspended list for the next six games and won’t count toward the practice squad.

Replacing Ealy on the practice squad is former Chiefs WR Marcus Kemp, who was reported to be visiting the team over the weekend. Kemp originally signed with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Hawaii in 2017. He primarily played special teams during his tenure in Kansas City, with just a handful of catches and opportunities on offense during his career.

Kemp left the Chiefs this past offseason and joined the New York Giants. He suffered a hamstring injury during the course of his time in New York. He landed on injured reserve, where he was eventually released with an injury settlement. Now healthy, Kemp returns to Kansas City to reinforce the special teams unit.

With players like Elijah Lee and Dicaprio Bootle already having used multiple practice squad elevations, it makes a ton of sense to add a player like Kemp to the fold. Expect that Dave Toub will get him up to speed and have him ready to be called up in a standard practice squad elevation as early as this week.

Pair of Chiefs undrafted free agents poised for position changes

#Chiefs undrafted free agents Jerrion Ealy and Kehinde Oginni Hassan could end up playing new positions in Kansas City.

The Kansas City Chiefs could be gearing up to experiment with position changes for a pair of undrafted free agents recently signed to the roster.

On the Chiefs’ initial rookie minicamp roster, former Ole Miss RB Jerrion Ealy was listed at WR/RB. He’s since been listed on the team’s official roster at RB, suggesting he’ll play the position he played in college. There still is a little uncertainty surrounding where exactly he’ll play.

Following the conclusion of minicamp, Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed that they only worked Ealy at running back over the weekend. Reid didn’t rule out the possibility of using him as a receiver, complimenting his pass-catching skills.

“We had him at running back this camp here, and he’s pretty good at that,” Reid explained. “He did a nice job, but he does have good hands. He’s another one with big hands, too. He does a nice job.”

Ealy’s situation is certainly one to monitor with OTA’s and Phase 3 of the offseason program on the horizon.

Another player who appears to be heading for a position switch is Nigerian TE Kehinde Oginni Hassan. A participant in the NFL’s International Player Pathway program, Kehinde started off his athletic journey playing basketball. He was discovered by former NFL pass rusher Osi Umenyiora, at his Up Rise Academy, which helped Kehinde land a spot at the NFL International Combine.

Umenyiora won Super Bowl XLII with the New York Giants under the tutelage of now-Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo — a significant detail when you consider his position switch. While Kansas City originally listed Kehinde as a tight end on their rookie minicamp roster, he was assigned a jersey number ineligible for the tight end position. On the team’s official roster, he’s now listed as a defensive end.

Kehinde is also listed at 6-7 and 225 pounds, suggesting he’s far too light to play the defensive end position. That said, he has the frame to put on the weight and the raw athleticism to potentially develop into a contributor at the position.
