Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns lose out on two top in-state recruits

Recruiting blows are going to happen, no matter how big of momentum a program has. For Texas, they lost out on two 2022 targets this week.

Recruiting success has taken a significant bump under Steve Sarkisian’s short time in Austin. Five players have committed to Texas’ 2022 class, including four-star wide receivers Evan Stewart and Armani Winfield.

However, you cannot win them all. Two of the Longhorns’ targets, Landon Hullaby and Phaizon Wilson, have gone different ways.

Starting with Wilson, he was once a member of the 2022 class but decommitted when the on-the-field performances did not go well. The wide receiver hinted at an announcement on Friday night and released a top three school list. Alabama, Arkansas, and Ole Miss are the three programs still in the running for Wilson.

The new staff had been sending out re-offers to 2022 prospects throughout the first two months on the job. Wilson never reported one and was it was thought that the Longhorns moved on from him. Now, Wilson is heading to the SEC.

Moving to the defensive side of the ball with Hullaby — Texas was considered the favorite for the four-star safety. His younger brother, Jaden Hullaby, is currently on the Longhorns’ roster.

Landon shocked many on Saturday afternoon when he committed to Oregon over Texas. Blake Giddeon and Terry Joseph have had early recruiting momentum with the secondary being a position of need in the class. Losing out on Hullaby to a west coast program was surprising.

Texas still has plenty of prospects with other players at the positions. Recruiting blows are going to happen, no matter how big of momentum a program has. Sarkisian and his staff will be able to respond in the upcoming months.

Texas Football Recruiting: Quinn Ewers commits to Ohio State

After decommitting earlier this year from the Texas Longhorns, Quinn Ewers has now made a decision and chose to commit to Ohio State.

It has been a whirlwind of emotions for the Texas Longhorns on the recruiting front. The Longhorns were able to land the No. 1 recruit in the country with Quinn Ewers. The Longhorns were riding high after landing a top play in the country. They starting to pick up momentum on the recruiting front especially in the 2022 class.

After the losses to Texas Christian and the Oklahoma Sooners, the Longhorns starting losing momentum with Billy Bowman, Quinn Ewers, and Phaizon Wilson all bailing after the Sooners loss. This started a whirlwind of emotions within the fan base and the rumor mill went wild with thoughts of Tom Herman being replaced with Urban Meyer.

Now Ewers has made his decision about where he will go.

This is another top player in the state of Texas that will be playing his football outside the state. The Ohio State Buckeyes have made a living in Texas with their recruiting efforts.

Texas Longhorns Recruiting: Evan Stewart and Armani Winfield give updates on recruitment

Both Evan Stewart and Armani Winfield both gave an update on their recruitments recently with InsideTexas. UT is pushing hard for both WRs.

Since Quinn Ewers committed to Texas, the Southlake Carroll quarterback has been attempting to attract other top prospects to Austin. He and 2022 four-star wide receiver Phaizon Wilson held a throwing session with other top wide receivers Evan Stewart and Armani Winfield.

Both Stewart and Winfield both gave an update on their recruitments recently with InsideTexas. The two talked about which schools are pushing the hardest, where they stand with the Longhorns and their relationships with the coaches.

Beginning with Stewart, the Frisco native is the No. 7 wide receiver in the class. The four-star currently holds 29 offers, including six Big 12 schools.

“Texas, OU, Oregon, Penn State, and Baylor,” Stewart said about who recruit him the most.

Stewart did not say who is currently leading the race but did mention how he is a fan of Texas.

“I like Texas. I like the burnt orange. I like the all-white jerseys. I just like their swag when they come out.”

Despite coaching defensive backs, Jay Valai has been the one recruiting Stewart. Frisco is right in the middle of Valai’s recruiting region. Wide receiver coach Andre Coleman has also been in contact with Stewart but Valai has the strongest relationship.

“Coach (Jay) Valai puts out a good vibe.”

Moving over to Winfield, the four-star was heavily leaning towards Oklahoma. Then, Ewers’ commitment changed it all.

Now, it seems as if it will come down to Texas and two out-of-state schools.

“Texas, most definitely,” said Winfield about who stands out. “Ohio State and Arizona State too. I can really relate to the ASU staff.”

Growing up in the state of Texas, Winfield already knows everything the Longhorns can bring home. Not only on the football field but off as well.

“I like Texas because I grew up in Texas,” Winfield said. “Why not put on for UT? I feel like me growing up in Texas, I can bring my skills, and with the new NIL rules, building that brand. I already have my fanbase right here.”

The No. 12 wide receiver in the country, Winfield also ranks as the No. 12 player in the state of Texas. On the 247Sports composite, the high school junior is a top 75 player, ranking No. 73 overall.

Winfield did not give a timeline on when he would commit but knows how quickly the class could fill up. Thanks to Ewers, players from across the country will want to have their chance to play in Austin.

After landing the elite quarterback, elite pass catchers must follow. Stewart, Wilson, and Winfield can bring exactly that.

Texas Football Recruiting: Quinn Ewers putting in work on the trail

Texas quarterback commits to the 2020 recruiting class, Quinn Ewers is trying to entice top recruits to play for the Longhorns.

It was a commitment that sent shockwaves throughout the country when Southlake Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers made it official. The number one quarterback in the country decided he would stay home and play for his childhood team the Texas Longhorns. Much like Jalen Milroe before he decided to exit stage left, Ewers is putting in work recruiting for the 2022 class.

It shouldn’t be a difficult task, as already seen on social media. Recruits tweeted in response to his commitment, mostly teasing about coming to play for the Longhorns. It is very early in the process for the 2020 Texas football recruiting class but with a player the caliber of Ewers leading the way, big things could be on the horizon.

According to Mike Roach of 247Sports, Ewers spent Friday night working with another commit in Phaizon Wilson. Outside of Wilson, he had top targets Evan Stewart and Armani Winfield. The quarterback of the future is already working on getting these top targets to the Forty Acres.

Evan Stewart of Liberty (Frisco)

Stewart is a four-star wide receiver out of Frisco. He currently ranks as the seventh best wide out in the country and sixth best Texas prospect. The 6’0″ pass catcher hasn’t indicated at this point which way he is leaning but his offer list is impressive.

Armani Winfield of Lewisville

Winfield is another Dallas area product that Ewers worked with on Friday. Prior to the commitment of Ewers, it seemed like Winfield to Oklahoma was a foregone conclusion. His crystal ball projections were pointing towards Norman. However, as of late Texas is picking up steam to land the talented receiver. Winfield is the 12th ranked wide out and Texas prospect. The Longhorns could look to the four-star wideout to the fold.

The way the 2022 Texas football recruiting class has started out, it seems like it could be one of those program changing classes. Texas hasn’t had issues with getting top targets to the Forty Acres, but a five-star quarterback hasn’t been one that have been able to get. Mike Yurcich brining in Ewers could change things.

With a new staff in place it has become a wait and see approach on how development looks. Texas is sitting as the sixth-best class in the 247Sports team rankings, and while it is early there is no reason they can’t challenge for the top spot. Let’s see how good of a recruiting Quinn Ewers can be.

Texas lands first commitment of 2022 class in four-star receiver

Texas has landed their first commitment of the 2022 recruiting class with Phaizon Wilson. A four-star WR, Phaizon chose UT over Texas A&M.

Texas has landed their first commitment of the 2022 recruiting class with Phaizon Wilson. A four-star wide receiver from Lancaster, Texas, Phaizon chose the Longhorns over Texas A&M.

Tom Herman’s great run in the state of Texas begins with Phaizon and will continue through the 2022 class. Once again, Herman finds a way to beat Jimbo Fisher and the Aggies for an in-state blue-chip prospect.
