SEC announces football conference scheduling format for 2025 season

The schedule will remain at eight games with the same opponents teams face in 2024, but the locations will be flipped.

With the SEC expanding to 16 teams this summer with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma to the league, an eight-game conference schedule was agreed upon for the 2024 campaign, while the future scheduling format was left to be determined.

Now, we know what that format will look like, at least in 2025. Instead of moving to a nine-game schedule as some had speculated would happen, the league will remain at eight games.

Teams will face the same conference opponents they do in 2024, with the home and away locations being swapped. For LSU, that means matchups in Death Valley against South Carolina, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Florida with road games coming against Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Alabama and Oklahoma.

It’s unclear if they league still intends to expand to nine games in 2026 and beyond, but for now, we know what the next two years of SEC play will look like.

Georgia football’s 2024 schedule confirmed

Georgia football’s 2024 SEC schedule confirmed

We already knew Georgia football’s opponents for the 2024 season, but we weren’t able to confirm the dates until Wednesday night’s SEC release show on ESPN.

This is a new era for the conference, which will add Big 12 powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma in 2024. The traditional divisional format will be gone and the top two teams in the standings will battle for the SEC Championship.

The Bulldogs’ slate next fall is full of marquee matchups, particularly on the road in the some of the most hostile environments the conference has to offer.

Georgia will travel to Alabama, Texas and Ole Miss. The Crimson Tide and the Longhorns are playing in this year’s College Football Playoff semifinals, while the Rebels finished at No. 11 in the final CFP rankings.

Here’s Georgia’s 2024 schedule:

Brian Kelly wants to keep Alabama as an annual opponent in future SEC scheduling

Brian Kelly said that both he and AD Scott Woodward want Alabama to remain an annual rival.

College football is set for some drastic changes in 2024, and that’s especially true in the SEC.

Oklahoma and Texas are joining the league, meaning the end of the division format that has existed since 1992. Schedules have been announced for next season, but the format beyond 2024 is yet to be determined.

LSU prepares to face Alabama on the road this weekend in a pivotal SEC West matchup, and it could potentially be the last matchup between the two in Tuscaloosa for a while. Though they will meet at Tiger Stadium in 2024, future contests are not a guarantee.

However, on the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said that both he and athletics director [autotag]Scott Woodward[/autotag] wish to keep the Crimson Tide as an annual opponent.

“I think we’re going to have a say in what that scheduling looks like in terms of Alabama against LSU,” Kelly said, per Nick Kelly of the Tuscaloosa News. “I think commissioner (Greg) Sankey has given us the opportunity to talk about the team or teams that we want to keep on our schedule. Each school I think has those natural rivalries, and certainly, in talking to Scott Woodward, our AD, he and I both would be in agreement that LSU-Alabama is a game that we would like to see played every year.”

Only time will tell how the scheduling format ultimately looks, but it’s clear LSU is fighting to keep this annual rivalry alive.

Previewing Arkansas football’s 2023 opponents

Arkansas football has an improved roster and their schedule in 2023 is manageable. Here’s a game-by-game preview of what to expect.

There are less than 70 days left until Arkansas football kicks off their 2023 season on Sept. 4 vs. Western Carolina.

Following spring practices and late transfer portal additions, there’s a quiet confidence brewing around the state, but particularly in Fayetteville. [autotag]Sam Pittman[/autotag] made some big staff changes following the subpar 2022 campaign and his two biggest offensive weapons from last year are back – [autotag]KJ Jefferson[/autotag] and [autotag]Rocket Sanders[/autotag].

Looking at the roster, things look to be in much better shape than where they were last season. Looking at the schedule, things to look pretty manageable aside from a difficult gauntlet to begin SEC play.

Let’s go game-by-game and preview what exactly the Razorbacks will be up against this upcoming season.

LSU women’s basketball home and away SEC opponents revealed for 2023-24

LSU coach Kim Mulkey and her team will be looking to repeat as national champions in the 2023-24 season.

LSU coach [autotag]Kim Mulkey[/autotag] and her team will be looking to repeat as national champions in the 2023-24 season, and they now have a better idea of what that gauntlet is going to look like.

The SEC announced the full slate of opponents — both home and away — for each women’s basketball team on Wednesday morning. For LSU, the slate is highlighted by a home matchup against South Carolina, which handed the Tigers one of only two losses suffered last season and the only one during the regular season.

LSU is among the most talented teams in the country again. Though it loses [autotag]Alexis Morris[/autotag], it brings back [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] and Flau’Jae Johnson while adding a pair of big-time transfers in [autotag]Hailey Van Lith[/autotag] and [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag].

SEC Strength of Schedule: How does Alabama’s rank in 2023?

See where Alabama’s 2023 SEC football schedule ranks among others in the conference.

The 2023 season is an important one for the Crimson Tide, which looks to return to the College Football Playoff after a two-loss 2022 regular season. The games on the schedule are not easy, but Alabama will certainly try to run the table.

According to CBS Sports’ Barrett Sallee, the Tide have the fourth-toughest schedule in the SEC for the 2023 season. Florida has the most difficult, while Georgia has the easiest of all 14 teams.

“The Crimson Tide have a Week 2 showdown with Texas in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which could be one of the games of the year,” writes Sallee. “The phrase ‘Texas is back’ has been a running joke for more than a decade, but the Longhorns nearly upset Alabama in Austin, Texas, a year ago. Alabama can’t let them get revenge, otherwise the season could get sideways. The Tide have nine straight games to start the season — a streak that concludes with the massive rivalry game against Tennessee. They finish with the road game vs. Auburn, and we all know how wild things can get inside Jordan-Hare Stadium.”

As Sallee mentioned, there are some very tough games against worthy opponents in 2023. Most of those matchups are home games for Alabama, which will likely work in the Tide’s favor. However, it’ll all come down to what goes down on the field.

Taking on Texas in Bryant-Denny Stadium will be an amazing environment, but it’s definitely a game Tide fans must be nervous about. Sure, Alabama won last year in Austin, but that was with Bryce Young, Will Anderson, Jahmyr Gibbs and others. Not to mention, the Longhorns were without starting quarterback Quinn Ewers for most of the game.

If Nick Saban and Alabama wants to make a run at another national championship, 2023 would be an amazing year to do it. Proving to the rest of the country that the program is still capable of reloading and not rebuilding would be the perfect exclamation point on the year.

LSU men’s basketball 2023-24 SEC home-and-away opponents revealed

The Tigers are still waiting for the schedule, but their SEC opponents in 2023-24 were revealed.

The LSU Tigers learned who they will be facing off against in conference play in the second season under coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag].

While the schedule is yet to be announced, we now know the full list of home and away opponents for LSU as it looks to bounce back from a frustrating Year 1 under McMahon.

The Tigers finished with a disappointing 14-19 record in 2022-23, going just 2-16 in SEC play. McMahon hit the transfer portal hard once again this offseason after another exodus of players, and LSU will hope to get things right this time around in what will be a key year for McMahon.

Here’s the full list of SEC opponents — home and away — for the 2023-24 season.

CBS Sports ranks Texas’ 2024 SEC schedule as one of the easiest in the conference

Aside from Arkansas, CBS Sports believes Texas has the easiest SEC schedule in 2024. Who has the toughest?

We’re still a season away from Texas and Oklahoma officially joining the SEC, but many are already looking forward to the 2024 conference schedule. Continue reading “CBS Sports ranks Texas’ 2024 SEC schedule as one of the easiest in the conference”

Sooners 2024 SEC schedule toughest, Longhorns 2nd easiest per CBS Sports

CBS Sports ranked each of the SEC schedules for 2024 and the Oklahoma Sooners came in with the toughest, while Texas the second-weakest slate.

Moving to the SEC was going to provide challenges. Of that, there was never a doubt. Yet, it’s still impressive to see Oklahoma’s SEC opponents for the 2024 season laid out on paper.

The Sooners will play Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina at home. They’ll travel to play LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss and Missouri. Then there’s the annual matchup with Texas in the Cotton Bowl.

Simply put, it’s a tough schedule to navigate. Alabama is arguably the best program in the country over the last 15 years, and Tennessee’s on the upswing with Josh Heupel’s offense leading the way. LSU, Auburn and Ole Miss create incredible game-day environments.

Over at CBS Sports, Barrett Sallee ranked each of the 16 Big 12 schedules and your Oklahoma Sooners’ 2024 slate is considered the toughest in the conference.

Get ready, Sooners. Your first trip through the SEC gauntlet is going to be a monster. Two of their three true home games are against teams that hit the double-digit win mark in 2022 (Alabama and Tennessee), and they have to travel to three raucous road atmospheres (LSU, Auburn and Ole Miss). When you throw in the fact that coach Brent Venables had an extremely underwhelming debut in 2022, things might get sketchy. — Sallee, CBS Sports

2022 has no bearing on 2024. They will be completely different teams heading into Brent Venables’ third season in Norman. The 2022 recruiting class will be the core of that roster, with Jackson Arnold headlining at quarterback. The team speed and physicality will be at a different level, and it will be a more experienced group, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Especially if guys like Danny Stutsman and Billy Bowman stick around for one go-round in the SEC.

But it is a tough schedule. There’s no way around it. The Sooners have work to do on both sides of the ball to prepare the roster for the matchups they’ll face each week in their new conference home. But that doesn’t mean it’s an impossible schedule.

At the back end of the ranking with one of the weakest SEC schedules is the Texas Longhorns, who came in at No. 15.

We are all excited about the rekindled rivalry between the Longhorns and Aggies, and the fact that it’ll be on the road will make it an even tougher test for coach Steve Sarkisian’s crew. However, the other two true road games — Arkansas and Vanderbilt — more than make up for it. The Horns get Georgia at home, but their other three home games will likely be winnable. Sallee, CBS Sports

The Longhorns have the unenviable task of traveling to play the Vanderbilt Commodores (note sarcasm). Sure, they’ll host Georgia, and they return to College Station, but a schedule with Texas A&M, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Arkansas is fairly straightforward for Texas. If the Longhorns don’t go at least 6-2 in the conference, it will be incredibly disappointing.

Mississippi State had the second-best record of teams on their schedule in 2022. Everyone but Georgia and Mississippi State finished 7-6 or worse last season.

In contrast, six of Oklahoma’s eight opponents (including Texas) finished 8-5 or better in 2022.

Now, it’s impossible to get schedule equity in a 16-team league with historic rivalries to consider. The schedule was going to be tough, any way you slice it, and this is what the Oklahoma Sooners asked for.

LSU is a winner from the SEC 2024 schedule release, per On3

The Tigers could be poised to benefit from the end of the division structure.

The Tigers learned which teams they will face when divisions are eliminated and the SEC expands to 16 teams with the addition of Oklahoma and Texas in 2024.

Many of LSU’s SEC rivalries will be preserved for at least one more year. The schedule includes games against Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Texas A&M in addition to a contest against the newcomer Sooners at Tiger Stadium.

Not all of LSU’s historic rivalries were protected, and it will be strange for the Tigers to not face either Auburn or Mississippi State in 2024.

Still, as far as a conference schedule in a loaded league goes, LSU’s could be a lot worse. On3’s Jesse Simonton classified the Tigers as winners from the SEC schedule release and said that if coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] can’t lead the team to the College Football Playoff in 2023, he’ll have a good shot in 2024.

The 2024 season is still far away, and in the age of significant college football roster flux, it’s hard to project who will be good and who won’t be more than a year in advance.

If Kelly continues to build at LSU, this could be a team poised to take advantage of the end of the East-West dichotomy.
