Penn State to play 3 of the Big Ten’s new members in updated 2024 schedule

Penn State faces a challenging schedule with the updated 2024 Big Ten schedule.

For the second time this year, Penn State got a full Big Ten schedule update for the 2024 season. On Thursday, the Big Ten announced the full conference schedule for the 2024 college football season, which will be the first year with the conference’s four new members from the Pac-12; Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington. Penn State will play three of the new conference members, including two at home.

Penn State will open its Big Ten schedule at home with a game against Illinois on Sept. 28, 2024. The following week, on Oct. 5, Penn State will welcome new Big Ten member UCKLA. The following week, the Nittany Lions will travel to the west coast to face UCLA’s crosstown rivals, USC.

Penn State will get a bye week after the cross-country trip to USC, but will then resume their schedule on the road on Oct. 26 at Wisconsin. Penn State will then host Ohio State on Nov. 2.

A week after hosting Ohio State, Penn State will then host Washington on Nov. 9. Penn State will not play current East Division opponents Michigan, Michigan State, Rutgers, or Indiana. There will be no divisions in the Big Ten beginning in 2024.

Penn State’s 2024 season will begin on the road against West Virginia in a non-conference matchup. The game will be the second half of a scheduled home-and-home series. Penn State won the first game in the agreement to open the 2023 season in Beaver Stadium.

Penn State announces home-and-home football series with Syracuse

Penn State and Syracuse schedule home-and-home football series

One of Penn State’s oldest regional rivals is heading back on the football schedule. And no, while the days of a reunion with Pitt will likely be on hold for an extended period of time, the Nittany Lions will be squaring off with the Syracuse Orange once again.

Penn State announced a future home-and-home schedule agreement with Syracuse on Wednesday. Penn State will host Syracuse in 2027 and the Nittany Lions will head up to Syracuse for a return trip the following season in 2028.

Penn State is scheduled to host Syracuse on September 4, 2017. Syracuse will host Penn State on September 9, 2028.

The addition of Syracuse to the 2027 schedule will tentatively complete Penn State’s schedule for the 2027 season. Syracuse is the third of three non-conference matchups scheduled for that season by Penn State. Penn State is already scheduled to host Delaware on September 11, 2027 and Temple on September 18, 2027. As long as the Big Ten sticks to a nine-game conference schedule, which is still to be determined for the 2027 season, Penn State’s schedule is effectively booked solid. The Big Ten schedule for 2027 will be released at a later time, although Penn State now has the first three weeks of the season lined up with the Orange, Blue Hens, and Owls.

The road game against Syracuse in 2028 is currently the only game officially on the books for the 2028 season. But like 2027, the Big Ten is still expected to have a nine-game conference schedule in 2028. That will leave two non-conference slots to fill on the 2028 schedule for Penn State.

Penn State leads the all-time series with Syracuse 43-23-5. Penn State won the most recent meeting in the series in MetLife Stadium on August 31, 2023 by a score of 23-17.

Penn State Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Nittany Lions miss from the Big Ten West Division?

The Nittany Lions don’t have to play Wisconsin or Iowa. Start with that, and everything else in interdivisional play is gravy. Considering they lost to Illinois, that’s a nice miss, too, and not playing Nebraska this season isn’t a bad thing.

However, Minnesota and Purdue will be tough outs – the Nittany Lions get the Gophers at home and start the season on the road at Purdue – and Northwestern at home needs to be a must win.

In the East, Ohio State and Michigan State are home games, and the Michigan game is on the road coming off a two week break.

Penn State Football Schedule What To Know: War Eagle

It’s not a layup of a start, but if the Nittany Lions can get by Purdue on the road to kick things off, realistically, all that stands in the way of a 5-0 start is the trip to Auburn. That’s the statement moment for the season. Lose that, and with the big boys from the East coming up, the pressure will be on.

Ohio and Central Michigan at home shouldn’t be an issue in the other two non-conference games.

Penn State Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not bad, all things considered.

If Penn State really is good enough to be any sort of a player in the Big Ten and College Football Playoff races, it can’t ask for much more than two of the biggest games – Ohio State, Michigan State – and home along with the breaks against the West.

Again, it’s all about Auburn. Pull that off in mid-September, and the buzz will be there up until the showdown in Ann Arbor.

Five stats that defined Wisconsin’s 16-10 loss to Penn State

Five stats that defined a disappointing Week 1 loss for Wisconsin:

That wasn’t the way 80,000 fans were supposed to be welcomed back to Camp Randall. Wisconsin opened the season with a 16-10 home loss to Penn State in a game where they had every chance to pull out a victory. The game, however, ended in justice with Penn State’s defense yet again stopping a promising Badger drive at the death.

There were numbers, such as first half time of possession, that would scream a vintage Wisconsin performance. It was in the biggest moments offensively where the Badgers failed to finish, as QB Graham Mertz looked uncomfortable in the red zone.

In the first half, the Wisconsin defense looked like the top-ten unit in the country that many expect them to be. Specifically with LB Jack Sanborn flying from sideline to sideline and at the line of scrimmage, the Badger defense stalled anything the Nittany Lions wanted to do early.

Then the second half came, and with it came a change of pace for QB Sean Clifford’s group. The Badger secondary was all of a sudden leaking, as chunk plays to WR Jahan Dotson helped give Penn State the win.

In a game where Wisconsin’s units looked night and day different from the first to the second half, let’s try to summarize the loss from a statistical perspective:

Penn State reschedules game with Mountain West opponent to begin 2025 season

Penn State has been busy rescheduling games previously postponed from the 2020 season.

The 2020 college football season was supposed to kick off with a game between Penn State and Nevada. Long before the impact of the global pandemic hit the college football schedule with brute force, Nevada had backed out of that original plan in order to play another game that same weekend. But now Penn State and Nevada are back on the books, this time for the 2025 season.

Consider this one a little bit of an easter egg in a released statement from Penn State last week with the announcement of some other rescheduled games, but the release included an updated outline of future schedules. Without making any formal announcement, Penn State included a 2025 game against Nevada. Penn State is scheduled to host the Wolfpack on Aug. 30, 2025.

The two schools were originally scheduled to open the 2020 season in Happy Valley. However, in 2019, Nevada scheduled a game for that same weekend against Arkansas. Penn State scheduled a game with Kent State, who was originally slated to play Arkansas. Funny how that works, right?

Due to the pandemic, the Penn State-Kent State game and Nevada-Arkansas game were each canceled. The Nittany Lions recently announced a rescheduled game against Kent State for September 21, 2024.

Penn State and Nevada have never played in football before, so the first showdown between the two programs will hit the field in 2025.

Penn State now has one non-conference schedule vacancy to fill for the 2025 season, which will likely be added in the open Week 2 slot. This would be a perfect spot to reschedule the home-and-home series with Virginia Tech, but the Hokies are already scheduled to face Vanderbilt that weekend. As of now, there is no indication the canceled Penn State-Virginia Tech games will be rescheduled in the foreseeable future.

Here is the updated 2025 Penn State football schedule:

  • Aug. 30, 2025 – NEVADA
  • Sep. 13, 2025 – VILLANOVA
  • Sep. 20, 2025 – RUTGERS
  • Sep. 27, 2025 – at Illinois
  • Oct. 4, 2025 – PURDUE
  • Oct. 18, 2025 – at Maryland
  • Oct. 25, 2025 – at Minnesota
  • Nov. 1, 2025 – INDIANA
  • Nov. 8, 2025 – at Ohio State
  • Nov. 22, 2025 – MICHIGAN
  • Nov. 29, 2025 – at Michigan State
