LSU drops back-to-back SEC series with Sunday’s Game 3 collapse against Mississippi State

The Tigers led 13-4 in the sixth, but a Bulldogs rally erased that lead as LSU lost another conference series.

After blowing a lead late in Game 2, LSU looked to rebound and take the series against Mississippi State in Game 3. Instead, the Tigers saw a similar result as they squandered a 13-4 lead in the sixth inning to fall to the Bulldogs 14-13 in extras.

[autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] got the game started off right as he hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the second inning to give LSU a 3-0 lead.

Mississippi State got one of those runs back in the top of the third inning as the Bulldogs hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. LSU got that run back plus one more in the bottom of the inning as [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] hit a solo homer and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit an RBI double to give LSU a 5-1 lead after three innings.

Things started to unravel in the top of the fourth, though, as the Bulldogs scored three runs against [autotag]Gavin Guidry[/autotag] to cut the lead to 5-4. Once again, the Tigers answered. It all started with an error to score [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag]. After that, things went downhill fast for Mississippi State. [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit an RBI single, [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] reached on a fielder’s choice but got an RBI, and Jobert hit a two-RBI single to make it 10-4 LSU.

Mississippi State loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning against [autotag]Griffin Herring[/autotag] but [autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] came in and got the Tigers out of the jam without allowing any runs. After a Gavin Dugas double to start the bottom of the fifth, Morgan hit a two-run homer to increase the Tiger lead to 12-4. Hayden Travinski followed that with an RBI single to make it 13-4.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Bulldogs clawed their way back into the game as an RBI single and a three-run homer cut the lead to 13-8. In the top of the seventh inning, the Tiger lead came crashing down as Mississippi State scored five runs against three different pitchers to tie the game at 13.

What once looked as if it would be another run-rule victory had now become a tie game.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Bulldogs loaded the bases before [autotag]Riley Cooper[/autotag] got LSU out of the threat unscathed. In the bottom of the ninth inning, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] drew a walk to put the winning run on first base. [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] came into run for Pearson.

Kling advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and he advanced to third on a flyout by Morgan. Crews and White were intentionally walked to load the bases as [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] stepped into the box. He fouled out, and we headed to extras.

In the top of the 10th, the Bulldogs took the lead on a fielder’s choice to give them a 14-13 lead. Jones, Jobert, and Thompson were LSU’s final hope. Jones struck out swinging for out No. 1. Jobert walked to put the winning run at first. Thompson hit a fly ball into a double play and the game ended in a 14-13 Mississippi State victory.

With the loss, LSU drops to 39-12 and 17-9 in conference play. LSU has now lost two straight conference series. The next game will be on Tuesday against McNeese.

LSU sweeps Alabama with win in offense-heavy Game 3

The Tigers prevailed to secure a weekend sweep in a Game that featured 22 combined runs.

LSU entered Sunday’s matchup against Alabama with a chance to sweep the Tide. The Tigers did just that with a 13-11 win in Game 3.

Alabama started off strong in the top of the first as they scored a run on a fielding error before [autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] got the Tigers out of the inning. In the bottom of the second, [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] hit a two-run bomb to give LSU its first lead of the ballgame at 2-1.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] extended the lead to 3-1 with a “Crews Missile” in the bottom of the third inning.

The Tide came back strong as they scored three runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to give them a 7-3 lead thanks to some good hits and a couple of errors by LSU. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers came roaring back with some runs of their own as Crews and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] both hit RBI singles with the bases loaded before [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] walked in runs with bases loaded to tie the game.

Jones then hit a sacrifice fly to give the Tigers an 8-7 lead. [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] then hit an RBI single to extend the LSU lead to 9-7 after five innings.

The Crimson Tide scored a run in the sixth and the seventh inning to tie the game 9-9 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Milazzo gave the Tigers the lead again when he hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] to make it 10-9 LSU. Crews then walked with the bases loaded to make it 11-9 Tigers.

In the bottom of the eighth, Thompson and Kling both hit solo homers to make it 13-9 Tigers.

Alabama hit a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth as it attempted to make a comeback, but that is as close as the Tide would get. With the win, LSU moves to 35-8 overall 15-5 in conference play.

Its next game will be Tuesday night at Southeastern Louisiana. The first pitch for that game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.

Jordan Thompson and Paul Skenes lead LSU to a win in Game 1 vs. Tennessee

The most anticipated series of the season has begun on the bayou.

The most anticipated series of the season has begun on the Bayou. The LSU Tigers and the Tennessee Volunteers went toe-to-toe in front of a sold-out crowd at Alex Box Stadium, and coach Jay Johnson’s team survived in a 5-2 win to start the series the right way.

The pitching matchup for night one could not have been better. Two of the best pitchers in the country, [autotag]Paul Skenes[/autotag] and [autotag]Chase Dollander[/autotag], took part in a pitcher’s duel that mirrored a high noon showdown between outlaws.

LSU threatened in the first two innings but couldn’t plate any runs. In the top of the fifth, Tennessee drew first blood on an RBI single to give itself a 1-0 lead.

LSU got that run back and added one as [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit a two-run bomb to score [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] and give LSU a 2-1 lead after five innings. The biggest crowd in Alex Box Stadium history might have registered on the Richter scale when the ball left the stadium.

Skenes’ night was done after he pitched seven innings as he gave up only one run on five hits, one walk and 12 strikeouts. He extended his streak of double-digit strikeout games to seven as well. [autotag]Nate Ackenhausen[/autotag] came in to pitch the eighth inning for the Tigers.

After getting the first batter to fly out, the next hitter singled up the middle and then advanced all the way to third after two wild pitches. That chased Ackenhausen from the game as [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] came in facing a full count with a runner on third and one out.

Tennessee tied the game on the next pitch as they scored on an RBI single to make it 2-2. Edwards got the next two hitters out and we headed to the bottom of the eighth tied 2-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, after [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] got out, [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] reached on an error, [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] hit an infield single, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] was hit by a pitch and the bases were loaded. Thompson stepped into the batter’s box and proceeded to clear the bases with a three-RBI double to give LSU a 5-2 lead after eight innings!

Edwards stayed on the mound to pitch the ninth inning to try and close the game with a win. He got the first batter to fly out but the next two batters reached base. One was due to an error and the other was a single. That put runners on the corners with one out. The tying run then came to the plate. Edwards struck out the next batter for out number two. The next batter flew out to center field and the Tigers won 5-2!

It was the first win for LSU over Tennessee since 2018 and that win moved LSU to 23-3 (its best start since 2015). Game 2 will be Friday with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.

Tigers baseball run-rules Grambling in midweek matchup

LSU welcomed Grambling into Baton Rouge after winning a series against the Arkansas Razorbacks, and the offense picked up where it left off.

The Tigers scored two runs in the first two innings as [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored on a [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] RBI single and [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag] scored on a Dugas sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.

In the top of the third inning, Grambling took the lead on a three-run homer against [autotag]Blake Money[/autotag] to give them a 3-2 lead. That lead didn’t last long as LSU scored five runs in the bottom of the third. [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] and Jones hit homers and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] scored on an [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] single to make it 7-3 Tigers.

The Tigers never looked back after that. LSU scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth off of a Beloso single, a [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] single, a [autotag]Ben Nippolt[/autotag] single, a [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] single, and some throwing errors to make it 15-3 LSU after four innings.

Grambling scored one more run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 15-4 but LSU got that run back and another as they scored two in the bottom of the sixth. Kling scored on a sacrifice fly by [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag] and [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] scored on a wild pitch to make it 17-4 after six innings.

[autotag]Micah Bucknam[/autotag] pitched the seventh for the Tigers and Grambling welcomed him with a solo homer to cut the lead to 17-5. That wasn’t enough to stop the run rule as the Tigers won big.

LSU will welcome the Tennessee Vols to Alex Box Stadium this weekend for what should be a great series. The first pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT Thursday.

LSU overcomes slow start to breeze past New Orleans in midweek blowout

After four scoreless innings, the Tigers erupted to capture a 16-0 win in the final game before conference play.

It has been said that anything done three or more times becomes a pattern. If that is true, the LSU Tigers have a habit of getting to the bottom of the sixth or seventh inning and deciding they are ready to end the game.

The Tigers used a seven-run bottom of the sixth inning to blast New Orleans 16-0 in the last game before conference play starts this weekend.

[autotag]Chase Shores[/autotag] got the start on the mound but only pitched 2.1 innings before [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] came in for him in the third inning. Neither of them gave up a run and they gave up a combined 2 hits on 7 strikeouts and one walk.

Neither team scored a run until the bottom of the fifth inning when [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] hit a three-run bomb to left field to score [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] and [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] to make the game 3-0 after five innings.

That was the shot in the arm that the LSU offense needed. In the bottom of the sixth inning, [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag], [autotag]Jared Jones[/autotag], and [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] scored on a throwing error, Kling scored on a [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] flyout, Crews scored on a White single, and [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to make it 10-0 after six innings.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to left, [autotag]Brayden Jobert[/autotag] walked to bring home a run, [autotag]Jack Merrifield[/autotag] walked, and [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag] hit a two-RBI double to make it 16-0.

LSU has ‘Little’ problem crushing the Cardinals in midweek win

Christian Little got his first start of the season in a 9-2 win over Lamar.

[autotag]Christian Little[/autotag] got his first start of the season as LSU welcomed the Lamar Cardinals to Alex Box Stadium for a midweek game on Wednesday night, and the Tigers had no problems with Lamar as they won 9-2.

There has been a lot of chatter about where Little fits into this pitching staff going forward. Should he be a starter, a reliever, or a closer? We’ve mainly seen him used in a closing role so far and he has excelled at it. He entered tonight’s game 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA.

That ERA now has a blemish after tonight’s game, but it is still under 1.00. Let’s get to the recap and see what happened.

Lamar started the fourth inning with a solo homer to give Little his first run allowed all season, but that is all the Cardinals were able to get against him before [autotag]Will Hellmers[/autotag] came in to pitch at the start of the fifth inning.

Hellmers was pulled in the top of the sixth inning after Lamar got two runners on base with only one out. [autotag]Garrett Edwards[/autotag] came in and both runners advanced a base when a ball got by the catcher. The Cardinals then plated one of those runs on an RBI single to cut the lead to 6-2.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] hit a ‘Klinger Dinger’ to left center field to give the Tigers a little bit of breathing room with a 7-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] hit an RBI single to left to score Crews and [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] hit an RBI double to left to give LSU a 9-2 lead headed to the ninth inning.

Thatcher Hurd bites the Butler Bulldogs with run-rule shutout to cap off perfect weekend for LSU baseball

Thatcher Hurd used every pitch in his repertoire with a dazzling performance that gave the Tigers their third run-rule win of the weekend. 

[autotag]Thatcher Hurd[/autotag] had his best start of the young season so far as he was able to use every pitch in his repertoire against Butler on Monday night.

LSU once again used the long ball to carry them to a big, 11-0 victory over the Bulldogs. The Tigers’ offense came into the game averaging 15 runs per game, and this night was no different.

[autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] got the party started in the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot to center field and the rout was on from there. In the bottom of the second, LSU scored six runs as [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] hit a solo homer, [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] scored on a fielding error, Jobert scored on a [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] RBI double, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] scored on an RBI groundout from Crews, Morgan scored on a [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] RBI single and White scored on a Neal flyout to make it 7-0 LSU after two innings.

LSU tacked on a couple more runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Kling hit a long homer down the left field line in the fourth and [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] scored on a Crews groundout to make it 9-0 after five innings.

Hurd’s night finished after he went six innings allowing three hits and no runs on 11 strikeouts and one walk. It was his most dominant performance of the season so far. He carried the momentum he gained from the Texas game into this one and it showed.

[autotag]Ty Floyd[/autotag] got the start on the mound for LSU and other than giving up a solo homer in the first inning, he had a pretty good day. His final line was 5.2 innings pitched, three hits, one run, and six strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first, LSU made sure that the Central Connecticut lead didn’t last long. [autotag]Dylan Crews[/autotag] hit an RBI double to left field to score [autotag]Tre Morgan[/autotag] to tie the game. That was followed by [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag]’s first homer as a member of LSU as he hit a two-run shot to right field to make it 3-1 after the first inning.

In the bottom of the second, [autotag]Gavin Dugas[/autotag] hit a three-run shot to left field and Morgan scored on a sacrifice bunt by [autotag]Jordan Thompson[/autotag] to extend the lead to 7-1. The onslaught continued in the third inning as Dugas hit an RBI single and then scored on a wild pitch. Tommy Tanks then hit his second homer of the game as he hit a three-run bomb to right to make it 12-1 after three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, [autotag]Paxton Kling[/autotag] hit an RBI triple down the left field line to score [autotag]Brady Neal[/autotag] and Morgan hit an RBI single to right to score Kling and make it 14-1. In the bottom of the fifth, [autotag]Cade Beloso[/autotag] hit a two-run homer to right field, Neal scored on a wild pitch, and [autotag]Josh Stevenson[/autotag] and [autotag]Jack Merrifield[/autotag] scored on a two-RBI double by [autotag]Ethan Frey[/autotag] to make it 19-1 LSU.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, [autotag]Josh Pearson[/autotag] hit an RBI single to score [autotag]Hayden Travinski[/autotag], [autotag]Alex Milazzo[/autotag] got an RBI on a sacrifice fly, Stevenson hit an RBI single, Merrifield got an RBI on a sacrifice fly, Frey hit an RBI single to left and then scored on a wild pitch, and Beloso hit an RBI single to right field to make it 26-1 as we headed to the seventh inning.

[autotag]Bryce Collins[/autotag] stayed on the mound to try to get the final three outs, but the inning didn’t go as planned as the Blue Devils scored three more runs on him. Eventually, the Tigers won big over Central Connecticut. The Tigers will play Central Connecticut State tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT in the third game of the weekend.
