3 key matchups that could decide 49ers vs. Packers

The next three games for the 49ers won’t be easy and the stretch begins against the current No. 2 seed in the NFC Green Bay Packers.

The next three games for the 49ers won’t be easy, and the stretch begins Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers –  the current No. 2 seed in the NFC. This game is oozing with talent from both sides with Aaron Rodgers and Jimmy Garoppolo leading the charge. All the matchups to watch in this one effectively stem from the two signal callers.

Here are the matchups that will decide the Sunday night clash between the 49ers and Packers:

Richard Sherman vs. Davante Adams

Sherman had an interesting week last week when he got called for pass interference three times against Cardinals second-year receiver Christian Kirk. On Sunday he’ll face possibly the best receiver he’s lined up against this season. Adams missed four games earlier in the year with a toe injury, but still leads Green Bay with 57 targets. He’s by far Rodgers’ favorite pass catcher, and the star quarterback won’t hesitate to go after Sherman like some others have this season. Sherman will need to do his best not just covering Adams, but also covering Adams with less physicality than usual to prevent those big penalties.

49ers vs. Packers: 6 players to watch on defense

The 49ers defense as allowed 20-plus points in three consecutive games for the first time all season.

The 49ers’ defense has allowed 20-plus points in three consecutive games for the first time all season. It won’t get any easier with Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers coming to town for their highly-anticipated Sunday night matchup. The defense will need to click in all facets of the game to stop Packers head coach Matt LaFleur’s offense.

Here are the six players that will be key in doing just that:

CB Richard Sherman

Sherman was called for pass interference three times last week against the Cardinals. Sunday night he’ll be tasked in coverage plenty against wide receiver Davante Adams, who leads the Packers in targets despite missing four games. Sherman will need to be careful in coverage because the last thing the defense wants to do is give Rodgers free yards. Pass interference penalties against the Packers are especially damaging because Rodgers isn’t afraid to take deep shots.

49ers passing attack on display in 6 players to watch on offense vs. Packers

The 49ers offense features one of its biggest challenges Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers. The challenge may be less about overcoming the Green Bay defense than it is about keeping up with its offense. Jimmy Garoppolo will take on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ high-powered offense that always is a threat to score a ton of points.

With that said, there will be a lot of focus on the playmakers on San Francisco’s offense. Here are the six players to watch on that side of the ball for the 49ers in what could be the marquee game of the season:

QB Jimmy Garoppolo

Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports

We got the full Garoppolo experience last week in the 49ers’ 36-26 win over the Cardinals. There were two bad throws that led to interceptions deep in Arizona territory, but outside of those throws, Garoppolo was near perfect with 424 yards and four touchdowns. Sunday night could be a shootout with Rodgers on the other side. With the running game struggling, Garoppolo might need to be perfect Sunday.

It’s important to not lose faith when picking games. Slow starts exist for a reason. This year, underdogs were covering like crazy to start the year. There’s been a bit of a correction. That’s why we are finally over .500 for the first time this season. It only took 12 weeks to slog through the losses and the upsets, but we are back after two 7-2 weeks in a row.

One of the reasons we got here is an addiction to unders. Everyone wants to bet the over when it comes to totals. Overs are fun because points are fun. Finding that right under can be just as fun. It’s weird not cheering for points but once you get on the under train, it’s hard to get off. It’s important to note that sharps normally bet unders — and underdogs — because the public goes the other way. Follow the sharps.

Let’s get to Week 12. Home teams in CAPS, and we are using Bet MGM for our odds.  Games will be listed at -110 unless denoted otherwise.

Prediction

Packers 27, 49ers 24

Moneyline (?)

The 49ers have hit a patch of struggles recently, falling to the Seattle Seahawks two weeks ago and nearly losing to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11. The Packers aren’t perfect, but they’re healthy coming out of the bye and have Aaron Rodgers.

Bet the PACKERS (+145) to win this one outright, despite being the underdogs. They have the offensive line to neutralize the 49ers’ pass rush at least slightly and give Rodgers time.

Against the Spread (?)

The 49ers are 3.5-point home favorites over the Packers this weekend. Given their better record and home-field advantage, that’s no surprise. But with the Packers getting points, this bet is all the more enticing.

Bet the PACKERS (+3.5, -121) to cover the spread Sunday night, given their impressive 7-3 ATS record this season.

Over/Under (?)

The Over/Under is 46.5 points, but bet the OVER (-121). This game could turn into a shootout if the Packers throw the ball often early on.

As good as the 49ers defense has been, it has come back down to earth in recent weeks. They’ve given up 25, 27 and 26 points in their last three games after not allowing more than 20 through their first seven games.

NFC East

Dallas Cowboys 6-4

It still feels like Dallas should be better than it is. The Cowboys have a talented defense but give up too many points. They have a stud running back but go to Ezekiel Elliott too often on early downs. Dak Prescott is an MVP candidate. Dallas almost needs to win this game against the Patriots because the Eagles have an extremely easy schedule after Week 12. It’s a weird situation.

Remaining Games: @Patriots, Bills, @Bears, Rams, @Eagles, Redskins

Philadelphia Eagles 5-5

The Eagles are the new Falcons. Everyone expects them to win but they do something every other game that makes us question whether they are actually good. Their defensive injuries have now transitioned to the offense. If Philadelphia can beat the Seahawks this week, they could end up 10-6 or 11-5. It’s all very odd. The NFC East could come down to the Week 16 game against Dallas.

Remaining Games:  Seahawks, @Dolphins, Giants, @Redskins, Cowboys, @Giants

NFL announces several scheduling shuffles, none involve Cowboys, yet

The NFL announced changes to the 2019 regular season schedule on Tuesday. For the time being, none of them involve the Dallas Cowboys’ final slate of seven games. Nothing will change for the Week 11 schedule, but Week 12 is going to flip a couple of important, NFC matchups between the various time slots.

Those contests of course, are being moved around the ratings bonanza that will fall upon CBS when the Cowboys travel up north to take on the current AFC leaders in the New England Patriots. The league is swapping Green Bay against San Francisco along with Seattle against Philadelphia.

The Cowboys game will occupy the national, late afternoon start and kickoff at 3:25 p.m. central, as planned. The Fox network had the Packers and 49ers squaring off in a local coverage game, but Kyle Shanahan has his club at 8-1, and they warrant more national exposure. Aaron Rodgers vs Jimmy Garoppolo is now the Sunday night contest on .

To round out the moves, Russell Wilson’s Seahawks will now kick off at what would be 10 am in their local time zone, as they and Doug Pederson’s Eagles will now host Seattle at noon central.

In addition to these changes, the league has announced their Week 16 slate of Saturday games the weekend before the holidays.

The Houston Texans will visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on 12/21 at noon central. That will be followed by the Buffalo Bills visiting the New England Patriots at 3:30 p.m., then the Los Angeles Rams will take on the 49ers at 7:15 p.m.

All of the Saturday games will be broadcast on the NFL Network.

There can certainly be more changes in the coming weeks, as the league continues to try and get the best contest to the most eyeballs.  On could even involve the Cowboys and Eagles’ Week 16 contest potentially getting the Sunday night treatment.

NFL Official Rules On Schedule Changes

Flexible Scheduling

Allows teams to play their way onto the Sunday night schedule

In 2006 the NFL implemented a primetime “flexible scheduling” element on Sundays in Weeks 10-15 and in Week 17. In 2014 that was extended so that games between Weeks 5 and 17 could be affected by flex scheduling. However, only two games may be flexed into Sunday Night between Week 5 and 10.

Flexible scheduling ensured quality matchups on Sunday night in those weeks and gave surprise teams a chance to play their way onto primetime. The NBC Sunday night time slot for “flex” weeks lists the game tentatively scheduled for Sunday night.

Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game will be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights.

Just as the six major college football conferences have done for many years, the NFL has the flexibility to move the start times of games on Sundays, using a 12-day notice format.

For example, a game scheduled for a Sunday could move from a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff to an 8:15 p.m. start, but the change would be made and announced no later than the prior Tuesday, 12 days prior. Sunday afternoon games, as in the past, can still be moved between 1:00 and 4:05 or 4:25 p.m. ET.

In Week 17, in order to ensure a Sunday night game with playoff implications, the decision to move the start time may be made on six days notice.

NFL Flexible Scheduling 101

  • Begins Sunday of Week 5
  • In effect during Weeks 5-17
  • Up to 2 games may be flexed into Sunday Night between Weeks 5-10
  • Only Sunday afternoon games are subject to being moved into the Sunday night window.
  • The game that has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday night during flex weeks will be listed at 8:15 p.m. ET.
  • The majority of games on Sundays will be listed at 1:00 p.m. ET during flex weeks except for games played in Pacific or Mountain Time zones which will be listed at 4:05 or 4:15 p.m. ET.
  • No impact on Thursday, Saturday or Monday night games.
  • The NFL will decide (after consultation with CBS, FOX, NBC) and announce as early as possible the game being played at 8:15 p.m. ET. The announcement will come no later than 12 days prior to the game. The NFL may also announce games moving to 4:05 p.m. ET and 4:25 p.m. ET.
  • Week 17 start time changes could be decided on 6 days notice to ensure a game with playoff implications.
  • The NBC Sunday night time slot in “flex” weeks will list the game that has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday night.
  • Fans and ticket holders must be aware that NFL games in flex weeks are subject to change 12 days in advance (6 days in Week 17) and should plan accordingly.
  • NFL schedules all games.
  • Teams will be informed as soon as they are no longer under consideration or eligible for a move to Sunday night.
