B/R says Alvin Kamara is the NFL’s most overrated running back

Bleacher Report says Alvin Kamara is the NFL’s most overrated running back. The New Orleans Saints superstar hasn’t lost a step, but he hasn’t kept up the pace:

Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport says Alvin Kamara is the NFL’s most overrated running back. It’s a reach to suggest the New Orleans Saints superstar has lost a step, but it’s plainly obvious that he hasn’t kept up the pace he set early in his career. Injuries, age, attrition along the offensive line, and overuse have taken their toll.

Davenport zeroed in on three running backs as the NFL’s most overrated players at the position: Joe Mixon (Cincinnati Bengals), Najee Harris (Pittsburgh Steelers), and Kamara. Here’s some of what Davenport had to say about Kamara’s recent slump:

The last two seasons have been a different story, though. The yardage has still been there—Kamara has yet to come up short of that 1,300-yard mark in the pros. But in each of the past two seasons, he has failed to exceed four yards a carry. His reception numbers have plummeted as well—after 83 grabs in 2020, he has just 104 catches the past two seasons combined.

Again, those numbers aren’t bad. And part of the slide can be attributed to a change in offensive scheme. But Kamara’s 1,565 career touches appear to be catching up to him. He looks to have lost a step, and he broke just seven tackles all season long last year—32nd among running backs.

Kamara has never been a big-play threat in the conventional sense, lacking the extra gear to pull away from defenders in the open field. He averaged 25.5 carries of 10-plus yards through his first four years with the Saints, and he’s had 21 and 20 such gains on the ground in the last two seasons. Remember, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds, not 4.39 like Jonathan Taylor (50 carries for 10-plus yards in 2021). He’s never been put in the same conversation surrounding the best runners like Taylor, Derrick Henry, Nick Chubb, and even Christian McCaffrey or Josh Jacobs.

What has always set Kamara apart was his value on passing downs, running routes as well as any wide receiver around the league and easily catching the ball when it’s thrown his way. But his usage in that role has changed and diminished as of late without Drew Brees at quarterback. Jameis Winston struggled with the timing and accuracy on those passes. Andy Dalton was a little more efficient but he still isn’t someone who should have attempted 378 passes last year. That’s twice as many passes as Trevor Siemian threw a year earlier, and his version of the offense was even worse. As Kamara’s presence in the rushing attack has grown, his usage on passing downs has changed and decreased, and his overall effectiveness has gone with it.

Hopefully the arrival of Derek Carr will do a lot to reestablish Kamara’s game. He linked up often with Jacobs the last few years, completing 54 and 53 passes, so this is an element of the offense he’s well-prepared to develop. If he can help Kamara become more of an asset on passing downs like we’ve seen before, that’s going to be massive for the offense as a whole. Having improved depth in Jamaal Williams and Kendre Miller will help, but when he’s available Kamara is going to be the focal point of the backfield. Hopefully he makes the most of those opportunities to put this chatter about who’s overrated and who isn’t to bed.

Every NFL team’s most overrated player heading into 2022

Overrated doesn’t necessarily mean bad. But these players aren’t living up to expectations.

The NFL has no shortage of talent, including a budding group of superstars and undervalued players who don’t get the recognition they deserve. But there are also plenty of players who are overvalued.

After looking at every team’s most underrated player, it’s time to look at the other side of the coin with the overrated players in the NFL.

Overrated doesn’t necessarily mean bad. It just means that these players aren’t living up to the hype, however fair or unfair it may be. For some, they’re underperforming in regards to their contract. For others, they’re not necessarily meeting the high expectations thrust upon them.

Our NFL Wire editors identified the most overrated player for each team heading into the 2022 season, explaining why they’re not exactly living up to hype.

Who is the Packers’ most overrated player right now?

Our pick was Darnell Savage. Admittedly, it was a tough choice. Who would you pick as the Packers’ most overrated player?

Picking an overrated player, as our NFL Wire network just did this week, is a difficult task. Doing it right requires a strong understanding of the outside assessment of the team and its players while also factoring in a strong opinion on the actual value of individual players.

My attempt at the exercise brought me to safety Darnell Savage, a first-round pick with incredible physical attributes who flashed as an elite player for at least half a season in 2020 but also struggled at times as a young player and again over a full season in 2021.

Here was my full explanation of picking Savage:

This was a tough one. We actually picked Savage as the team’s breakout player in 2022, so also having him as the “most overrated” is a little tough to square. But it’s truly tough to know where Savage’s career is heading after a disappointing third season. He’s fast as the wind, and the Packers think he can be a versatile playmaker, but there’s been too many missed opportunities, too many missed tackles and too many big plays allowed, especially last season. If everything comes together, Savage could be a Pro Bowler. But there’s also a chance he’s just a really fast defensive back with some warts that won’t go away. The Packers have and can win with Savage, but will he reach his potential as one of the game’s best safeties? Who knows.

Savage could become an elite player. He was highly regarded (and rightfully so) after playing at a truly high level to end the 2020 season, so we know he can get there. But can he return to that level after a rocky third season in which he missed too many plays, coverages and tackles? There’s no doubting his combination of skills. Maybe there was a learning curve in Joe Barry’s defense, and he’ll improve during his second season in the scheme. Maybe, in Year 4 as a starter, the lightbulb will come on and stay on, and Savage will make this all look silly.

It’s a big season for him. The Packers picked up his fifth-year option, meaning he’s under contract through the 2023 season. But for Green Bay’s defense to reach elite levels, Savage must play better. He could tip the scales from good to great for the entire group.

So, who do you think is the Packers’ most overrated player entering 2022? Let us know in our poll, in the comments section or on Twitter.

Why safety Jamal Adams is Seahawks’ most overvalued player

After just two short years in Seattle, here’s a look at why safety Jamal Adams is the Seahawks’ most overvalued player on the roster.

Seahawks safety Jamal Adams – fans either love him or hate him. His short time in Seattle has been muddled with injuries and his play has been less-than-impressive at times despite his clear ability to shine on the field.

Lots of talk this offseason has been focused on which players are underpaid or underappreciated at their positions, but what about the most overvalued guys on each team? Patrik Walker of CBS Sports thinks Adams fits that bill in Seattle.

“Jamal Adams believes he’s the best safety in all of football, and he’s supposed to feel that way, because every player should carry such confidence onto the field,” Walker writes. “The reality is that he’s not, nor has he yet shown he has the coverage ability to be a solid one – instead perennially used as little more than a linebacker that lines up in the secondary.”

“Admittedly, he’s one of the best players in the league, but his durability issues, combined with how he’s been utilized in his career with the Jets and now the Seahawks, make what Seattle gave up to acquire him and then to retain him a bit of a head-scratcher,” Walker continues. “And with changes to the Seahawks’ defensive playing style in 2021, the one thing Adams excelled at (sacking QBs) was literally absent completely, but his two interceptions do count; although that number being a career-high sort of goes to my overarching point.”

Oooh boy . . .  if Adams didn’t already have a chip on his shoulder, he will now.

Adams and the rest of the Seahawks players are scheduled to report to training camp on July 26.

Overrated and underrated teams in preseason AP poll

Here are a few overrated and underrated teams from the preseason AP top 25 poll.

Every year when the AP poll comes out, there really is no point. Rarely does a team end the season where they began the year ranked. In reality, the poll is just put out for people to debate.

Thankfully, college football fans do nothing but debate.

To nobody’s surprise, Alabama will begin the year as the No. 1 team in the country. Five other SEC programs join them, making the joint-most out of the Power Five conferences. The ACC and Big 12 have the fewest with three.

You can see the whole poll here.

Texas debuts at No. 21 and it feels just about right. Many may throw them in the overrated category but for the first time in a while, national expectations seem to be lower for the Longhorns.

Not a lot could be said about a few other programs. There are a few overrated teams, especially in Texas’ future home, the SEC. A couple are underrated as well, despite being within the top 16.

Here are three overrated and three underrated teams from the preseason AP top 25 poll.

The Athletic believes Notre Dame being ‘overrated’ is a thing of the past

Are the Irish really overrated?

Being a national brand isn’t always easy, just ask Texas and Michigan, when it comes to playing up to expectations. Every program wants to have the clout that Alabama, has gained over the last ten years, getting the benefit of the doubt more often than not.

[listicle id=31937]

Notre Dame doesn’t exactly fall into the same boat as the Longhorns and Wolverines, but it seems like it’s an annual rite of passage for many to claim that the Irish are overrated. That should be coming to an end soon, at least that’s what Matt Fortuna of The Athletic (subscription required) believes.

[listicle id=24549]

In their most recent mailbag, Fortuna was asked if “should ‘Notre Dame is perennially overrated’ go the way of ‘Clemsoning?” The question refers to “Clemsoning” as the Tigers outperforming their preseason ranking. Between 2011 and 2018 “Clemson ranked lower than the Tigers’ final ranking” explained Fortuna.

[listicle id=31952]

But what about the Irish? Well the overrated moniker should not apply anymore. “In the past four years, the Irish have outperformed their preseason AP poll rankings three times… This is a program that wins the games it’s supposed to win. It just doesn’t always win the games it’s not supposed to win, although the reality of the situation is that few teams are regularly beating Alabama and Clemson,” explained Fortuna.

[lawrence-related id=31948]

He concludes by saying “that no, Notre Dame is not perennially overrated,” which I tend to agree with. Have the Irish flopped on the big stage more than a few times in recently memory. Unfortunately they have, but they’re getting there and have an opportunity. There’s plenty of programs that would love to have been in the same position that Notre Dame has put themselves in two of the past three years, in the College Football Playoff.

[lawrence-related id=32031]

For the Irish to truly shake off the “overrated” talk they’re going to have to win more than just a regular season game against Clemson at home. Ohio State had that very similar negative national perception after back-to-back loses in the BCS Championship game and look where they are now. One of the top programs in the country.

[lawrence-related id=32023]

Sometimes you have to feel the defeat before the triumph, and I think that’s exactly what Notre Dame is going through right now. The breakout is coming and soon the perception that the Irish are overrated will go out the window.

Breaking down the ‘Mac Jones is overrated’ dilemma

Alabama quarterback Mac Jones has been under a lot of scrutiny recently, especially since his name has been tied to the No. 3 overall pick.

Former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is one of the most talked about players heading into the upcoming 2021 NFL draft.

There have been rumors that he could be the third quarterback selected with the No. 3 overall pick, and then there are others that believe his capbilities are not worthy of a first-round selection.

His senior season stats speak for themselves. He tallied exactly 4,500 yards on 77.4% completion percentage and added 41 touchdowns while only throwing four interceptions.

All that while also winning a national championship, being a 2020 Heisman finalist and a slew of other awards. One would think that he’s a unanimously agreed upon top draft pick.

However, that is not the case.

A common argument against Jones is that he is an average quarterback that played with a team consisting of NFL-ready talent, which made him look a lot better than he actually is.

Well, if that’s the case, then the argument claims that DeVonta Smith, Jaylen Waddle, Najee Harris and numerous offensive linemen ought to be at the top of their respective positional classes heading into draft night. This is where things get sticky.

Some call it ‘Bama Fatigue.’

All of the aformentioned positional players have taken heat for not being the best at their position, or even being deemed not NFL ready for various reasons.

One person on Twitter noticed the hypocrisy and pointed it out.

Some questions will have answers on the first night of the 2021 NFL draft, where teams will show how they value each and every player. However, other questions will be answered when the season actually begins and the players can showcase their talents at the professional level.
