Reggie Bush Heisman return should lead to restored 2004 BCS title for USC

Heisman? Check. Reggie Bush got what he deserved. Now let’s get back the 2004 BCS championship.

Reggie Bush has his Heisman Trophy back, but there should be unfinished business to take care of at USC. When the NCAA conducted its investigation of USC in 2010, a crackdown on the school began. USC ultimately endured several very stiff penalties, one of them being the vacating of the 2004 Bowl Championship Series national championship, won over Oklahoma in the 2005 Orange Bowl. Now that Reggie Bush has his Heisman, it’s time for USC to get that BCS title back in the official record book and to also have its vacated victories restored as well.

USC won two national championships in the Pete Carroll era, but 2004 was the only unanimous title. The 2003 championship was a title the Trojans split with LSU. The Tigers won the BCS championship while USC won the Associated Press national title due to finishing atop the final AP poll of that season.

USC still has some work to do. Reggie Bush getting his Heisman back is not the final chapter in this long-running drama.

Discussing what would have happened this season under BCS model

College football is much more competitive with a playoff.

We have a four-team College Football Playoff this season. And while a 13-win Florida State team is excluded, the 2023 national title hunt is significantly less messy than it would have been under the bowl championship series (BCS) model.

Who would play in this season’s national championship under the BCS? Almost certainly, Michigan and Washington would take the top two spots. It’s uncertain if those are the two best teams in college football.

Under the BCS model, Texas could fall below both Alabama and Florida State to No. 5 despite defeating Alabama by double digits in Tuscaloosa. Vegas favors Texas over No. 2 Washington in the Sugar Bowl.

It is probably clear to many that the BCS would not adequately determine the national champion this season. The four-team playoff is an evident upgrade over the prior championship determiner. And while Florida State still sits on the outside, the four-team tournament does a much better job of finding a national champion.

College football has more parity than it has in a long while. All four playoff participants can win a national title. And while some bemoan the changes brought by the College Football Playoff, transfer portal, and name, image and likeness (NIL) era, the three have resulted in the most competitive push for a title in several seasons.

The playoff selection is imperfect, and there’s an argument that six teams deserved to be in this year’s tournament. Nevertheless, you’ll get a much better postseason than you would under the BCS.

Bowl season kicks off with seven games headlined by Texas Tech vs. Cal on Saturday, Dec. 16.

What would today’s college football rankings look like under old BCS formula?

Just how crazy would things be under the old system?

There is a lot of football left to be played but there sits a possible nightmare scenario for the College Football Playoff.

As we enter Week 9 of the season, Michigan, Ohio State, Florida State, Georgia, Washington, and Oklahoma are all undefeated from Power Five conferences.  Michigan and Ohio State meeting at the end of the regular season will guarantee one loss for the two, but what if each other team runs the table?

Can you imagine the justified outrage if one of those teams ran the table and spent the College Football Playoff on the outside looking in?

Now imagine how things would look under the old BCS system.

Forget missing out at a chance at No. 5, you’d have No. 3 and No. 4 missing out on a championship chance as well.

But what would the BCS formula say about today’s rankings?  Who would it have graded as the nation’s top few teams and who would have been left on the outside?

The people at BCSKnowhow put together what the BCS rankings would like today.

Who is in the all-important No. 1 and No. 2 spots and which unbeaten is it simply just not buying into?

Let’s take a look from No. 25 to No. 1:

Where would the Oklahoma Sooners rank in the BCS?

Where do the Oklahoma Sooners land in the BCS rankings after week 8?

The first [autotag]College Football Playoff[/autotag] rankings of 2023 are right around the corner, with the initial release coming next Tuesday.

Since becoming the method for deciding the national championship, the playoff has provided a little controversy along the way. But that hasn’t stopped folks from pining for the return of the Bowl Championship Subdivision rankings system.

From 1998 to 2013, the BCS was used to determine the top two teams in the nation, who would then play in the national championship game. The Oklahoma Sooners are tied with Florida State for the most BCS title game appearances with four. However, among teams with at least two appearances, the Sooners have the worst winning percentage at 0.250.

Through the first five weeks of the season, voters took a “wait and see” approach with the Sooners. But since beating Texas, Oklahoma has garnered more respect, moving up to No. 6 in the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25. The ESPN Football Power Index also respects the Sooners, with OU coming in at No. 4.

So what would the BCS rankings look like after Week 8? The folks over at BCSKnowhow put together what the BCS rankings would like at this point in the 2023 season. Where are the Sooners? Let’s take a look.
