NBA Power Rankings: 76ers on a dominant run behind MVP Joel Embiid

Rookie Wire looked at the NBA through games played on Thursday and ranked each team from worst to first.

The schedule is approaching another action-packed Christmas Day schedule in the NBA: 10 of the top teams in the league take the court on the holiday.

Much of the NBA converged in Central Florida this week to take in the G League Winter Showcase at the Orange County Convention Center. The top decision-makers were on hand to watch the games, featuring several first-round picks and other notable players.

Though it is too early for trades to materialize, executives and scouts had the opportunity to catch some of the top free agents in action on the court. With the window soon opening for 10-day contracts (Jan. 5), teams could begin to add help in the coming weeks.

To make further sense of it all, Rookie Wire looked at the NBA and ranked each team from worst to first. We will return each week and provide our latest assessment of the best teams and those that are rising.

Jett Howard using G League to expand his game: ‘I’m working extra with the coaches after hours’

Jett Howard has only logged 34 minutes with the Magic, but the 11th pick is gaining plenty of experience in the G League.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Jett Howard has only logged 34 minutes with the Orlando Magic this season, but the 11th pick is gaining game-time experience in the G League.

Howard has been out of the rotation to start the season and typically only checks in when games are already decided. As a result, the team has assigned him to the Osceola Magic when possible to get consistent playing time and stay in rhythm on the court.

He made his fifth appearance in the G League on Tuesday as Osceola tipped off its two-game stint in the Winter Showcase at the Orange County Convention Center. He played alongside Mac McClung, Trevelin Queen and Brandon Williams among others.

Howard produced 18 points, four assists, three rebounds and one steal in 32 minutes in a 121-113 win over the South Bay Lakers. He went 5-of-12 from 3-point range in 33 minutes of work, his second game with at least five 3s with Osceola.

He views the assignments as a great opportunity to improve his game.

“It is definitely a change, but I’m just working extra with the coaches after hours and getting work in,” Howard told Rookie Wire. “That kind of prepares you for this. There is not too much acclimation to do. It is just getting used to the guys; that is probably the biggest thing.”

Howard entered the NBA draft likely best known to most as a shooter. He was named to the All-Big Ten third team last season at Michigan after averaging 14.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and two assists on 36.8% shooting from 3-point range. He was third in the conference in 3s (78).

But it is his defense that will ultimately enable him to get onto the court.

He has made that a big focus since the start of the season, whether with Orlando or Osceola. He admitted it wasn’t something that was practiced a lot growing up but from navigating through screens to closing out on shooters, Howard is working on every facet of his defense.

Magic coach Jamahl Mosley can see improvement with him.

I think his 1-on-1 defense is highly improving because he knows as a shooter what guys do when they go under or over on a screen, so he recognizes that offensively. So now, being able to guard in real-time and say, ‘OK, here is what I would do.’ He is gaining that confidence … and is learning that on the fly, which is great to be able to play those minutes.

Howard is averaging 18.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.6 assists and one steal on 34.6% shooting from 3-point range with Osceola. He has scored in double figures four times, including a season-high 34 points and seven 3-pointers in his debut on Nov. 22.

He is among several first-round picks to play in the G League this year, joining Jarace Walker, Taylor Hendricks, Gradey Dick, Brandin Podziemski and Cam Whitmore. He, like those players, has been out of the rotation with his NBA club and is using the G League to gain experience.

The opportunity to log real game experience with Osceola has been very valuable for Howard and the Magic. He can log extended minutes and work on elements of his game to be prepared to contribute.

“It is tough, but at the same time, there is a lot of good basketball being played because we’re fourth in the East right now,” Howard said. “Watching them play beautiful basketball helps me understand how to play better and shoot better. Watching Gary (Harris) and Joe (Ingles) and Caleb (Houstan) helps me out down here because you kind of pick up new things when you see new things.”

The Magic, led by Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner and Cole Anthony, are among the early surprises in the NBA after finishing 34-48 last season. Though they have lost five of seven, they are 16-10 on the year and have defeated teams like Boston, Denver and Milwaukee.

The organization brought back much of the roster from last season. The group has great chemistry on and off the court, which has been evident in their start this season. They are looking to take the next step in their rebuild, and believe they can do it.

“I can sense it was going to happen since training camp,” Howard said. “I definitely sensed that early and the excitement is growing. We feel it, and we know we’re here. The guys are confident, so that’s half of the battle. I think we’ll do really well this year, and I think we’ll shock a few people.”

Was the Boston Celtics’ matinee win vs. the Orlando Magic Jaylen Brown’s best game of the season?

As the Celtics head out on a West Coast road trip, they carry the momentum of an impressive home stand with them, thanks in part to JB.

After the Boston Celtics’ 114-97 triumph over a tough Orlando Magic ball club at TD Garden this past Sunday afternoon, solidifying their best-ever home record at 14-0, All-NBA Celtics forward Jaylen Brown spoke with the media postgame.

Brown, a crucial factor in the win with 17 of his 31 points scored in the game’s fourth quarter, spoke at length about his impact on the win. He mentioned his 3-point shooting, saying, “When my 3 ball is going in, I don’t think there’s anything anybody can do (to stop me).” As the Celtics head out on a West Coast road trip, they carry the momentum of an impressive home stand with them, thanks in part to JB.

CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning and Josue Pavon shared their thoughts on what was arguably one of Brown’s best games of the season on a recent episode of the “Garden Report” podcast.

Celtics stomp Magic in sweep of new rivalry as Jaylen Brown’s dominance continues

The reemergence of Jaylen Brown as a dominant force bodes well for the Celtics.

In a dominating win, the Boston Celtics secured their second consecutive victory against the Orlando Magic Sunday afternoon at TD Garden, a significant shift vs. a long, athletic, and physical ball club they had previously struggled with.

The Celtics showed off their depth with key contributions from Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, Derrick White, and Jrue Holiday, with all five starters scoring in double figures. Jayson Tatum’s performance, though not as efficient on a night where he shot 8-of-2 from the field overall, played a role in the win as well. The reemergence of Jaylen Brown as a dominant force bodes well for the Celtics.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast recently weighed in on the win over the Magic during a recent episode of the pod.

Jaylen Brown caught fire, surging the Boston Celtics past the Orlando Magic

Brown played a pivotal role in the win, scoring 31 points, with 17 of those coming in a crucial fourth-quarter stretch.

The Boston Celtics continued their impressive play of late with a 114-97 victory over the Orlando Magic at TD Garden this past Sunday afternoon, securing a 5-0 record in a recent home stand of as many contests. Star forward Jaylen Brown played a pivotal role in the win, scoring 31 points, with 17 of those coming in a crucial fourth-quarter stretch.

The Celtics’ success against the Magic extended beyond offense in the win, as their defensive efforts and team cohesion were critical throughout the game vs. a plucky Orlando squad that made multiple runs at trying to take control of the game, only to see Boston’s clamps shut them down.

NBC Sports Boston’s Eddie House and Brian Scalabrine joined Amina Smith to talk over the win and Boston’s excellent play in recent contests on the network’s “Postgame Live” show.

The Celtics should be seeing themselves in the young Orlando Magic

When the Boston Celtics gaze across the court at the Orlando Magic, they’re staring directly down into a puddle.

When the Boston Celtics gaze across the court at the Orlando Magic, they’re staring directly down into a puddle. Sure, a play here and there might disturb the glassy water, shaking up the image bouncing back at them. But, the resemblance returns when the waters calm.

Whether the two teams realize it or not, they resemble each other in more ways than one. Jayson Tatum should see himself in the young Paolo Banchero. No, not just in size, where Banchero is his equal and then some in both height and wingspan. Rather, in the nature by which they process the game.

Banchero is growing as a ball-handler every day, comfortable in navigating non-traditional pick-and-rolls to see if the Magic can bait a switch and get a smaller player on the reigning Rookie of the Year.

Why Joe Mazzulla believes his team is finally playing ‘Celtic basketball’

Head coach Joe Mazzulla says his team has been showcasing “Celtics basketball” as of late.

The Boston Celtics have opened the 2023-24 regular season on a tear, jumping out to a 20-5 record, including a perfect 14-0 at home. But success is measured in championship banners in Boston, and head coach Joe Mazzulla knows there is a certain expectation for the professional basketball team in the Hub.

Mazzulla is only in his second year as the coach of the Celtics, but the Rhode Islander is plenty familiar with the team’s history and success. Likewise, given last season’s disappointing postseason, he knows that winning at the highest level in the NBA requires a certain consistency. After Sunday’s win over the Orlando Magic, the fourth victory in as many games for Boston, Mazzulla outlined to reporters why he believes his club is beginning to hit its stride.

“I think we’re starting to play what I would call ‘Celtics basketball,'” Mazzulla said. “From a mentality standpoint, from a toughness standpoint, from a defensive standpoint and identity, reflecting what it means to play like the Celtics. And I think this week we’ve shown that.”

Celtics top Magic 114-97, move to 14-0 at home on the season

The Celtics dropped the Magic 114-97 Sunday afternoon, moving to 14-0 at home to open the season.

The Boston Celtics defeated the visiting Orlando Magic Sunday afternoon 114-97, the second meeting of the weekend between the two teams. With the win, the Celtics continue their hot start at home, advancing to 14-0 at TD Garden to open the year.

After a quiet night on Friday, Orlando’s Paolo Banchero made his presence known in a big way Sunday. The reigning Rookie of the Year logged 36 points on the night, including 26 points on 10-for-15 shooting in the first half alone. Unfortunately for the Magic, that wasn’t enough to overcome a balanced Celtics scoring attack that was anchored with an equally sturdy defensive showing and punctuated by a 17-point fourth quarter performance from Jaylen Brown.

Here’s what you may have missed from Sunday afternoon’s 114-97 Celtics victory against the Magic.

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ 25th game of the 2023-24 NBA season vs. the Magic.

The Boston Celtics came into their second tilt of a home-and-home series at TD Garden with the Orlando Magic on Sunday afternoon feeling pretty good about themselves after having beaten the Magic down three of their best big men in their prior meeting.

And for good reason, with Boston weathering a brutal onslaught in the tilt’s first half to come away with a 114-97 win after breaking the game open late in the first half. Holding the Magic to just 38.2% from the field and just 30.6% from 3, the Celtics also won the rebounding battle by 12 boards and blocked 6 more shot attempts than Orlando.

Let’s take a look at some of the best moments captured in images in the Celtics’ 25th game of the 2023-24 NBA season vs. the Magic.
