Ohio State vs. Rutgers complete preview and prediction

Everything you need to know for Ohio State vs. Rutgers including a prediction. #GoBucks

Will the Ohio State football team ever get a break? After taking care of Wisconsin in Madison this past Saturday for a night game, the Buckeyes face another team with a winning record, Rutgers.

I know what you’re thinking: “It’s Rutgers.”

I’m not saying you’re wrong. But this isn’t your typical doormat Scarlet Knights team. No, head coach Greg Schiano has his team playing at a much higher level than in years past. Yes, they lost to Wisconsin, and, yes, they squeaked one out against Michigan State, but this team has the tools to mount an upset bid against the mighty Buckeyes.

Time to get ready for another week in the Big Ten as Ohio State looks to keep its record unblemished. Let’s dive into our complete preview and prediction for the game.

Ohio State Buckeyes College Football Preview 2021: Offense

The offense was fantastic, and now it’s about keeping it all going with a new quarterback and a few different parts up front. The Buckeyes averaged 519 yards and 41 points per game, the running game rolled, the turnovers were kept to a relative minimum, and there was a terrific combination of explosiveness and power to adapt when things weren’t smooth. But the main man who ran the thing is now – most likely – going to be the Chicago Bears’ starting quarterback.

Justin Fields wasn’t everything to the Ohio State offense, but he was about as MVPish as it gets. It’s Ohio State, so the factory is about to crank out the next star who’ll take over, but it might take just a little while for everything to be smooth.

With a trip to Minnesota to start the season and the Oregon game to follow, there’s no time here for a warm-up, so …

Game On, CJ Stroud. The star quarterback recruit of a few years ago should be the main man to pilot this thing, but redshirt freshman Jack Miller isn’t being counted out of the mix. They’re both big, they can both throw, and they both need time.

One slight nitpicky negative from the way the short 2020 season went was the development of the young quarterbacks – there wasn’t really any in game action. Fields was the only Buckeye to throw a pass. Fortunately going forward, the new starting quarterback – it’ll be Stroud – has a loaded receiving corps to work with.

– The Buckeyes caught a massive break when Chris Olave decided to return for his senior year. A dangerous deep threat, he turned into even more of a No. 1 target last season with a team-high 50 catches for 729 yards and seven scores.

Olave will be the main man again, but Garrett Wilson might be the more explosive playmaker on the outside X position. He averaged close to 17 yards per catch – finishing second on the team with 43 grabs for 723 yards and six scores – and there’s a whole lot of fast young talent ready to rise up.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba should take on a big role in the slot, and superstar recruit Emeka Egbuka should be ready from the moment he steps on campus. However, the Buckeyes lost Jameson Williams – who caught nine passes for 154 yards and two scores – to Alabama.

The tight end situation is set. Jeremy Ruckert only caught 13 passes, but he scored five times and should be an even bigger part of the attack as a safety-valve for Stroud.

The offensive line loses a few guys, but it has its normal array of all-star talent. There will be some shifting around inside, but Thayer Munford is  back for another year at one tackle job, and future NFL starter Nick Petit-Frere is a good one at left tackle.

The pass protection was a tad spotty – Fields was always tough while waiting for the downfield plays to develop – but the line was a steamroller for the ground game. It will be again.

Trey Sermon might be done after closing out – before getting hurt in the national title game – with an epic three-game stretch, but Master Teague is a solid, veteran back who ran for 514 yards and eight scores. He’s not the receiver that Sermon was, and on the way to push for time is star recruit TreVeyon Henderson to bring more explosiveness to the mix.

Ohio State vs. Michigan 2020 Football Preview And Prediction

Ohio State will host Michigan this year for what we hope is the next edition of The Game. We’ve got your preview and prediction.

It’s finally Michigan Week and now we’re just hoping that somehow the greatest rivalry in all of sports will somehow be played. The Wolverines had to cancel with Maryland last week due to COVID concerns and now the annual showdown is in jeopardy.

Michigan is coming into the game a team in shambles. A season that started out with such promise has quickly turned sour. And Jim Harbaugh’s seat is about as hot as it could be right now, with added rumors of the head coach leaving for the NFL. It’s all led to the Buckeye’s being a 30 point favorite.

I always contend records can be thrown out of the window when it comes to rivalry games. Ohio State is clearly the better team and the class of the Big Ten, but anything can happen when it comes to The Game.

Ohio State vs. Michigan State 2020 Football Preview And Prediction

See the keys to the game and our prediction for the Buckeyes and Spartans squaring off in East Lansing this Saturday.

What a rollercoaster of a season. Players, coaches, and fans wait each week with bated breath to see if the team will be able to take the field or if COVID-19 will notch another victory in the win column.

This week brings the same anxiety of the waiting game. As of now, Ohio State is optimistic that the game against Michigan State will take place. But until the team is on the field, we won’t know for sure.

Sparty has been a bit of a mystery this year. They couldn’t get out of their own way in an opening loss to Rutgers and then last week beat the No. 8 ranked Northwestern Wildcats. Your guess is as good as ours.

Assuming both teams can get to Saturday with no outbreaks, let’s take a look at how the game might play out.

Ohio State vs. Illinois 2020 Football Preview And Prediction

Ohio State travels to Champaign to face the Fighting Illini as the Big Ten season rolls on. We’ve got your preview and prediction.

Well, Ohio State made it past a gritty Indiana team. While the Buckeyes looked unstoppable in short spurts against the No. 9 team in the nation, there were more head-scratching moments than we’d care to see from a team with national title aspirations.

Even though he threw for 300 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, Justin Fields probably played his worst game as a Buckeye. It seemed as if he was trying to do too much at times which led to sacks and interceptions.

This also might have been the worst game Ryan Day has called as the Ohio State head coach. Indiana sent blitz packages galore. The best way to beat a team that blitzes often? Run right at them.

When Ohio State took to the ground, they had continued success. Master Teague rushed for a career-high 169 yards and Trey Sermon added another 60. And yet, the run seemed to be abandoned at crucial times, most notably on fourth-and-1 on the Indiana five-yard line only up by a score. Don’t overthink it… hand the ball to Teague and get downhill behind one of the most experienced offensive lines in college football.

The good news is this, you learn best when you’ve been faced with a little adversity. I think it was most likely a good thing for this Buckeye team to face a challenge to see what they need to clean up as well as motivation to play better.

On to Champaign to face the Fighting Illini.

Well that seemed to work out just fine. The Buckeye attack was fourth in the nation overall, third in scoring, No. 1 overall in third down conversions, and versatile enough to get things moving whenever and however it wanted. Even in the Fiesta Bowl loss to Clemson, the O worked great up until the very end.

It all started with the guy who appears to be the best Ohio State quarterback in a fantastic chain of talents.

Everything was more than fine after losing Dwayne Haskins, with Justin Fields coming in from Georgia and being everything the offense could’ve wanted and more.

He had the help of a whole lot of next-level weapons around him, but he was the one running the killer offense with the running element to go along with one of the nation’s most efficient passing games. Former Kentucky transfer Gunnar Hoak is the expected backup. Considering the big shots Fields takes, the No. 2 gig matters.

– It’s Ohio State, so the running back situation will be okay no matter what, but JK Dobbins might have been the nation’s most underappreciated superstar over the last few years. Fields did his part for the ground game, but Dobbins was used for more than 300 carries with over 2,000 yards and 21 scores.

Master Teague is a terrific option returning – he was second with 789 yards and four scores – but Oklahoma transfer Trey Sermon should be the main man while Teague gets past an Achilles’ heel injury. There’s talent at the position, but it’s a relatively inexperienced group outside of the two main guys.

They’ll have the luxury of working behind another fabulous O line. Ohio State never has a problem bringing in talented blockers, but last year’s group seemed to have a different sort of edge. It took over when it was time to step up – like in the two wins over Wisconsin.

Thayer Munford is great at one tackle, Nick Petit-Frere has next-level upside at the other, and there’s enough versatility for the interior to replace a few lost parts without a hiccup.

– Few places can lose two of the top three receivers and be more than fine. Gone is the school’s all-time leading receiver KJ Hill, and also gone is big-play threat and the team’s No. 3 producer, Binjimen Victor.

Whatever.

Chris Olave is a tremendous deep threat, Garrett Wilson is coming off a fantastic freshman season, and the other parts around them would be No. 1 targets at almost anywhere else. Tight ends Luke Farrell and Jeremy Ruckert are NFL-sized targets who’ll combine for at least 30 grabs.
