4 new Broncos players pick their jersey numbers

New Broncos players OL Dieter Eiselen (70), OT Cam Fleming (71), WR Kaden Davis (81) and WR A.T. Perry (87) picked their jersey numbers.

The Denver Broncos had a busy week making changes to the practice squad, bringing in four new players. Those new arrivals have now picked their jersey numbers.

Broncos center/guard Dieter Eiselen picked No. 70, which hasn’t been worn by a Denver player in a regular season game since former tackle Bobby Massie in 2021.

Returning tackle Cam Fleming picked No. 71, the number he wore with the New England Patriots to begin his career. He later switched to No. 75 with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants and then wore No. 73 with the Broncos from 2021-2023.

Returning wide receiver Kaden Davis picked No. 81, which was previously worn by receiver Tre’Quan Smith last fall and by Tim Patrick before that.

New receiver A.T. Perry picked No. 87, which was famously worn by former receiver Ed McCaffrey and most recently worn by receiver David Sills.

3 new Broncos players pick their jersey numbers

New Broncos LB Kwon Alexander (No. 12), RB Salvon Ahmed (No. 37) and LB Zach Cunningham (No. 42) have picked their jersey numbers.

After losing Alex Singleton to a season-ending knee injury, the Denver Broncos signed veterans Zach Cunningham and Kwon Alexander to the practice squad to add more depth at inside linebacker last week.

Alexander initially picked jersey No. 51, but he has since switched to No. 12, which was previously worn by former Broncos wide receiver Tim Patrick. Cunningham picked jersey No. 42. That number became available after pass rusher Nik Bonitto switched to No. 15 this summer.

This week, after losing Tyler Badie to a back injury, the Broncos signed Salvon Ahmed to add more depth at running back. Ahmed picked jersey No. 37, which was previously worn by rookie Audric Estime this summer before he switched to No. 23 after roster cuts.

  • LB Kwon Alexander: 12
  • RB Salvon Ahmed: 37
  • LB Zach Cunningham: 42

Denver has three officially retired numbers (No. 7 for John Elway, No. 44 for Floyd Little and No. 18 for Frank Tripucka) and three other numbers that aren’t typically made available (No. 24 for Champ Bailey, No. 58 for Von Miller and No. 88 for the late Demarius Thomas).

With a full 53-man roster, a 17-player practice squad and eight players on injury lists, the Broncos’ remaining numbers available are 46, 47, 50, 51, 59, 61, 62, 65, 67, 68, 70, 71, 81, 87, and 95.

Kool-Aid McKinstry has changed his New Orleans Saints jersey number

Kool-Aid McKinstry changed his Saints jersey number, but let’s hope he doesn’t pick up where Andy Dalton and Tommylee Lewis left off:

https://twitter.com/brandont504/status/1832049665413419275

Have you ever seen a defensive back wearing No. 14? Kool-Aid McKinstry has taken it up and changed his New Orleans Saints jersey number from No. 34, which he wore throughout the summer and preseason games. McKinstry shared a look at his new jersey on his Instagram account (which was boosted by his teammate Tyrann Mathieu) and the change has since been reflected on the Saints’ official team website.

It’s certainly a unique decision. McKinstry wore No. 1 at Alabama but it was taken by Alontae Taylor, so he’s going with No. 14 instead. Maybe he’ll wear it more proudly than other Saints players who came before him — a list that includes names like Andy Dalton, Kawaan Bakeer, Tommylee Lewis, Travin Dural, and a past-his-prime Mark Ingram.

And it isn’t like other options were unavailable. If McKinstry wanted to get out of No. 34, he could’ve taken unclaimed jerseys like Nos. 42, 40, 37, 30, 27, 26, or even No. 2. Instead he’s using the same jersey number as a third-string wide receiver. Hopefully the rookie plays well enough when his number is called to where we don’t have to think about its disappointing history.

New Packers QB Malik Willis takes No. 2, CB Carrington Valentine switches to No. 24

A few uniform number notes for the Green Bay Packers coming out of final cuts: new quarterback Malik Willis is taking No. 2, while cornerback Carrington Valentine is switching from No. 37 to No. 24.

A few uniform number notes for the Green Bay Packers coming out of final cuts: new quarterback Malik Willis, who was acquired via trade with the Tennessee Titans, is taking No. 2, while cornerback Carrington Valentine is switching from No. 37 to No. 24.

Willis wore No. 7 in high school at Roswell, in college at Liberty and in the NFL with the Titans, but that number is occupied by linebacker Quay Walker. He’ll take No. 2, which was vacated by kicker Greg Joseph when he was released on Wednesday. Mason Crosby is the most notable former Packers to wear the number.

Valentine is getting closer to the No. 14 he wore at Kentucky. He’ll take No. 24, which was vacated by safety Tyler Coyle when he was released during training camp. No. 14 is retired in Green Bay for Don Hutson.

Hall of Famer Willie Wood once wore No. 24 in Green Bay. Recent former Packers to wear the number include Tariq Carpenter, Isaac Yiadom, Raven Greene, Quinten Rollins and Jarrett Bush.

The Packers’ official Twitter account had a mockup of Valentine in the new digits:

The Packers have yet to announce the acquisition of kicker Brayden Narveson. He wore No. 44 at North Carolina State and No. 47 during training camp and the preseason with the Titans, and both numbers are currently available with the Packers.

UPDATE: Narveson will wear No. 44.

On the practice squad, running back Nate McCrary switched from No. 30 to No. 46, while receiver Jalen Wayne is now No. 86, which was held by Grant DuBose (now with the Dolphins).

4 Broncos players change jersey numbers after roster cuts

Following a flurry of roster cuts, four Broncos players have changed their jersey numbers ahead of the 2024 season.

After making 38 roster moves this week, the Denver Broncos have set a 53-man roster and a 15-player practice squad. Following the flurry of moves, four players have changed jersey numbers as the dust settles.

Broncos practice squad wide receiver David Sills switched from No. 87 to No. 13, which was made available when receiver Phillip Dorsett was cut.

Denver running back Audric Estime switched from No. 37 to No. 23, formerly worn by cut linebacker Andre Smith.

Fellow running back Blake Watson switched from No. 43 to No. 25, which was formerly worn by Samaje Perine before he was released. Watson and safety Keidron Smith shared No. 43 during the offseason. Smith will stick with No. 43 going into the season.

Finally, practice squad running back Tyler Badie switched from No. 36 to No. 28, which was formerly worn by cut cornerback Art Green.

Broncos’ new jersey numbers

  • WR David Sills: No. 13
  • RB Audric Estime: No. 23
  • RB Blake Watson: No. 25
  • RB Tyler Badie: No. 28

Denver’s active roster now appears to be pretty set. The team has one more practice squad signing to make before completing a 70-player squad. We will track all of the team’s moves on Broncos Wire.

Record audience tuned in to watch Micah Potter play for USA Basketball

Record audience tuned in to watch Micah Potter play for USA Basketball

A record audience of 1.162 million viewers tuned in to watch former Wisconsin Badger Micah Potter see game action for USA Basketball earlier this week.

Maybe the entire audience didn’t tune in to see Potter specifically, but instead to watch USA Basketball’s Olympic exhibition match against Canada. Then Potter saw game action to close the contest and even hit a corner three-pointer.

The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand shared the view count on Thursday afternoon. He also noted that it is the most-watched basketball game in Fox Sports 1 history. The total is more than any college basketball broadcast on the network — which are mostly Big Ten and Big East contests.

USA Basketball defeated Canada 86-72 in the Olympic warm-up on Wednesday. Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards led the scoring with 13 points, while Steph Curry, Jrue Holiday and Anthony Davis added 12, 11 and 10 points respectively.

Potter joined the scoring with a late three-pointer. He was 1/2 from the field during the contest in only two minutes of action.

Obviously, the record viewership number is mostly thanks to the starpower of LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Devin Booker, Joel Embiid and others. It is not to watch former Badgers Potter and Nigel Hayes-Davis see action in garbage time.

Unsurprisingly, most fans had no idea who Potter was when he checked in. But at least there was a substantial audience to watch his on-court moment.

Raiders QB Aidan O’Connell explains why he switched out of Derek Carr’s number

Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell explains why he switched out of Derek Carr’s number, saying it wasn’t his choice to pick it up in the first place:

There wasn’t much love lost between Derek Carr and the Las Vegas Raiders last year, when the longtime franchise quarterback shown the door after being benched for the last few weeks of the 2022 season. And that relationship splintered further when rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell put on Carr’s No. 4 jersey just months after Carr left to join the New Orleans Saints.

But O’Connell switched to No. 12 this offseason. He shared his reasoning on his teammate Maxx Crosby’s podcast, saying that it wasn’t his decision to pick No. 4 in the first place, and he hopes this gesture is seen as a respectful nod to Carr.

“I just didn’t want to be four anymore. I didn’t pick four, I was actually nine,” O’Connell recounted, “and then Tyree (Wilson) wanted nine, so they gave nine to Tyree in like the first week I was here last year, and they gave me four. I was a rookie, you kind of just do what you’re told. It was Derek’s number and he wore it for so long, he’s a franchise leader and all this stuff. It felt disrespectful. So I just wanted to give that back to him.”

O’Connell and Carr will cross paths in 2024 when the Raiders visit the Caesars Superdome for a late-season game in Week 17. Kickoff is scheduled for Dec. 29 at noon.

Look at the Raiders’ history books and you’ll see that no quarterback appeared in more games (142) than Carr did. He attempted more passes (4,958) than the second- and third-place quarterbacks combined (4,929 between Ken Stabler and Rich Gannon). He also owns the franchise record for touchdown passes by a wide margin (217 against Stabler’s 150). Carr never found postseason success with the Raiders, but he did give them stability under center that ex-head coach Josh McDaniels was all too eager to shake up.

Carr’s No. 4 jersey has been reissued by the Raiders since O’Connell gave it up, with veteran wide receiver Jalen Guyton choosing it. At least it isn’t another quarterback. It feels like a long shot for Carr to earn the same level of respect that Drew Brees and Archie Manning have in New Orleans, where no player will ever wear Nos. 9 or 8, but that does go to show the difference in how each organization treats its players.

Alontae Taylor hints at changing his Saints jersey number again

Alontae Taylor hinted at changing his Saints jersey number again on social media. Who could end up wearing No. 1?

Alontae Taylor has maintained an interesting social media presence during his career with the New Orleans Saints, and another chapter was added on Tuesday as he hinted at changing his jersey number for a second time.

After coming into the NFL and initially choosing the No. 27, he switched to No. 1 for 2023. Now, he is hinting at changing to his college number of 2. Jameis Winston held it when Taylor first joined the team, so it only recently became available.

The No. 2 jersey is currently being used by backup quarterback Kellen Mond. Mond could be cut, though, after the team drafted Spencer Rattler. Taylor may be hinting at changing his number because rookie cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry wore No. 1 in college.

This also isn’t the first time this offseason that someone has mentioned changing into No. 2, as Chris Olave also made a reference to switching his number as well. That didn’t come to fruition, possibly because of the costs involved in buying unsold No. 12 jerseys to facilitate the move (which would be prohibitive on a rookie salary).

Who will end up wearing the number? Is Taylor really hinting at a move? Only time will tell.

Taliese Fuaga can keep wearing his college jersey number with the Saints

Taliese Fuaga hasn’t chosen his New Orleans Saints jersey number, but his college number is open. It just might not make Andrus Peat too happy:

Taliese Fuaga hasn’t chosen which number he’ll wear with the New Orleans Saints just yet, but his college number is open if he wants to keep wearing it. There’s just one little thing: Fuaga claiming the No. 75 jersey might not make Andrus Peat too happy.

That’s the number Peat wore for nine years with the Saints. His contract voided in March, making him a free agent and making No. 75 available. The team hasn’t expressed much interest in bringing him back. Both Mickey Loomis and Dennis Allen shared lukewarm responses when asked about his availability.

So Peat may not be interested in re-signing with the Saints anyway. Having his jersey hanging in someone else’s locker (assuming the Saints don’t give it to Fuaga anyway) wouldn’t make it very appealing. Teams will be looking to sign veteran linemen after the draft, once they know what their depth charts look like, and Peat could have better opportunities waiting than what he’d find in New Orleans. We’ll have to wait and see where he ends up, and which number Fuaga ultimately chooses to wear.
