Arch Manning doesn’t look back on his grandfather’s Saints career too fondly

Arch Manning doesn’t look back on his grandfather’s Saints career fondly, though he says “it’s cool” to be back in the Superdome:

It’s the weekend of the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans where the Texas Longhorns and Washington Huskies will meet inside the Caesars Superdome for the opportunity to advance to the NCAA National Championship Game.

Though he won’t play, barring injury, Texas quarterback Arch Manning is back home in the city and ready to suit up in the same stadium where his grandfather Archie Manning played from 1971 to 1982. The younger Manning acknowledged the history made at the venue, but he doesn’t look back on his predecessor’s Saints career too fondly.

“My granddad, he’s my biggest role model. It’s cool being back where he played, where he ran around and got killed,” Manning told The Times-Picayune | The New Orleans Advocate’s Rod Walker.

Sacks were not officially tracked until 1982, but the good people at Pro Football Reference have done the work to find unofficial sack numbers all the way back to 1960. And their research found that the elder Manning set and broke the NFL record for sacks in a single season three times. He was sacked 40 times for a loss of 332 yards in 1971, 53 times for 347 lost yards in 1972, and a personal-high 49 times for 390 yards in 1975, before he lost the entire 1976 season to a shoulder injury.

Manning will continue as the backup to Quinn Ewers at Texas next season, unless Ewers makes a surprise decision to declare for the 2023 NFL draft following the playoffs. A local favorite who starred at Isidore Newman High School, Manning is patiently waiting for his opportunity at the college level. The son of Cooper Manning, he’s hoping to follow in the footsteps of his grandfather and uncles Peyton and Eli to forge his own successful pro football career.

Twitter reacts to Arch Manning’s college football debut

Peyton Manning’s nephew, Arch, made his college football debut on Black Friday. Here’s how social media reacted.

The Texas Longhorns dominated Texas Tech in a 57-7 blowout victory on Black Friday, providing an opportunity for true freshman quarterback Arch Manning to make his college football debut.

Arch, the son of Cooper Manning and nephew of former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli, had a modest (yet intriguing) performance. Manning went 2-of-5 passing for 30 yards. He also made a few plays with his feet.

Arch’s father, Cooper, was a star wide receiver in high school, but his football career was cut short before college by spinal stenosis. Following the retirements of Peyton and Eli, Cooper has been included in several commercials with his brothers.

Peyton, Eli and Cooper, of course, are the sons of Archie and Olivia Manning. Archie had a 14-year career as a quarterback in the NFL, spending time with the New Orleans Saints, Houston Oilers and Minnesota Vikings. A two-time Pro Bowler, Arche is a member of the Saints’ Hall of Fame.

Arch is now the latest Manning to play quarterback. Check out how Twitter/X reacted to his Texas debut below.

The top 20 rushing leaders in in New Orleans Saints history

These are the top 20 rushing leaders in in New Orleans Saints history. How long will Mark Ingram II stay on top?

The New Orleans Saints have always had a history of strong running back play, and it wasn’t easy for Mark Ingram II to finally climb the mountaintop and win the franchise rushing records. But how long will he hold the record for career rushing yards after taking it from Deuce McAllister? Alvin Kamara is closing in quickly.

And Taysom Hill deserves a shoutout — he’s already ranked inside the top 20 rushers in Saints franchise history, and another productive year like he had last season could vault him into the top-10. Here’s the full list:

Top 20 passing leaders in New Orleans Saints franchise history

These are the top 20 passing leaders in New Orleans Saints franchise history — including Drew Brees, Andy Dalton, Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston:

There’s a lot of things to be written about the New Orleans Saints’ history in the NFL, but it can’t be said that they have a strong tradition of high-level quarterback play. There’s a wide gulf stretching from Archie Manning’s heroic efforts in the franchise’s early days to the arrival of Aaron Brooks in the early 2000’s, followed up by the Hall of Fame resume that Drew Brees built for himself in the modern era.

For most of their history the Saints have struggled to find a solid starter. To put things in perspective, Derek Carr was widely panned for his performance with the Las Vegas Raiders last year, when he posted 3,522 passing yards in 15 games. But if he put up that exact total for the Saints in the fall he would immediately rank top-10 in the Saints record books, displacing Billy Joe Tolliver (3,343). The standard isn’t exactly sky-high. If Taysom Hill can match the 240 passing yards he logged a year ago he’ll be inside the top-15.

With that in mind, let’s look back on the 20 leading passers in Saints franchise history, ordered by career passing yards:

Former University of Tennessee quarterback Peyton Manning was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the class of 2021. He won two Super Bowl championships in the NFL.

Manning played for Tennessee from 1994-97 and led the Volunteers to the 1997 Southeastern Conference championship.

He is the son of Archie Manning. Archie Manning played quarterback at Ole Miss from 1968-70 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1989. He was selected by New Orleans with the No. 2 overall pick in the 1971 NFL draft.

Archie Manning’s youngest son, Eli Manning, also played quarterback at Ole Miss from 2000-03. Eli Manning was selected No. 1 overall by the Chargers in the 2004 NFL draft. He was traded to the Giants and won two Super Bowl championships with New York.

Archie Manning’s oldest son, Cooper Manning, played wide receiver in high school. Cooper Manning’s son, Arch Manning, signed to play quarterback at Texas in 2022.

Below are photos of the Manning quarterbacks through the years.

LOOK: Archie Manning visits grandson Arch at Texas

Arch was recently paid a visit by his grandfather Archie Manning.

Texas freshman quarterback Arch Manning is in the midst of his first spring semester at the college level. The former five-star is already turning heads by showing off his ability at team practices.

Arch comes from one of the more high-profile families in football. He was recently paid a visit by his grandfather Archie Manning.

Archie played college ball at Ole Miss before having an accomplished career as the quarterback of the New Orleans Saints. He is the father of NFL hall of fame signal-callers Peyton and Eli Manning, as well as Arch’s dad Cooper, who was forced to medically retire from football prematurely.

Football comes naturally to the Manning family. Arch is hoping to carve out his own path to success as a Texas Longhorn.

Arch shared a photo of him and his grandfather in Texas’ practice bubble on his Instagram.

Peyton Manning, Eli Manning ‘ManningCast’ to cover two Saints prime-time games

Peyton Manning, Eli Manning ‘ManningCast’ to cover two Saints prime-time games in 2022:

While the prime-time Monday Night Football games will be shown as usual on ESPN this season (with the newly-acquired Joe Buck and Troy Aikman heading broadcasts), fans can also tune in to ESPN2 for an alternate broadcast featuring Peyton Manning and Eli Manning — former NFL quarterbacks and sons of legendary New Orleans Saints passer Archie Manning, plus an assortment of special guests.

Peyton Manning, who lost Super Bowl XLIV to the Saints, will lead these broadcasts with his younger brother Eli Manning, who threw six touchdown passes against New Orleans and still lost back in 2015. Their Omaha Productions company puts these widely-viewed shows together in partnership with ESPN. And the Saints will be featured twice on this big stage — first in their Week 9 home game with the Baltimore Ravens, and again in Week 13 for their road tilt with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both kickoffs figure to feature an electric atmosphere.

So that should contrast nicely with the significantly more laid-back “ManningCast,” where both brothers typically take in the game from couches or reclining chairs while interviewing their famous teammates, rivals, and peers from around pro football’s orbit. It’s an entertaining, occasionally insightful, and very popular program, so it’s cool to see the Saints on their radar.

Texas commit Arch Manning draws another elite comparison

The hype surrounding Arch Manning continues.

The hype surrounding Arch Manning continues. One publication is comparing him to a former Indianapolis Colts quarterback, but not the one you might expect.

On3 Sports is finding similarities between Manning and former Houston area standout Andrew Luck.

Both quarterbacks share a few things in common. They each possess a strong arm, high football IQ and underrated athleticism.

Manning hopes to accomplish some of the goals Andrew Luck reached at the college and professional level. Luck elevated Stanford from mediocrity to the Orange Bowl and Fiesta Bowl in his time at Stanford.

Afterward, Luck was selected as the No. 1 overall pick to the Indianapolis Colts in the 2012 NFL Draft. While there, Luck led the Colts as far as the AFC Championship before retiring.

Winning over Arch Manning heals the wounds of past quarterback misses for Texas. Fans watched as quarterbacks their team undervalued excelled elsewhere. Andrew Luck, Jameis Winston, Johnny Manziel and Robert Griffin III were a few of Mack Brown’s biggest quarterback misses.

If Manning can duplicate Luck’s success, Texas could have a strong start as a new member of the SEC.

Peyton Manning stars in another Caesars commercial

Peyton Manning guesses “Omaha” and then scolds Eli for guessing “helmet catch” multiple times 😅

Peyton Manning might be retired from football, but he’s certainly not retired in general.

Manning’s various jobs include running his Omaha Productions company (which has produced multiple ESPN+ shows and TV game shows), and he’s also still acting in commercials, including three Super Bowl ads earlier this year.

Manning’s biggest commercial campaign last football season was with Caesars Sportsbook. Manning and his father, Archie, and his two brothers, Cooper and Eli, appeared in several ads for the betting app last year.

The Manning family will be back on TV again this season with new shorts for the sportsbook. The first commercial will debut when the Atlanta Falcons take on the New York Jets on Monday Night Football in Week 2 of preseason.

The latest ad shows the Mannings playing charades with “Caesar” (JB Smoove). Peyton guesses “Omaha” and then later scolds Eli for guessing “helmet catch” multiple times. Cooper then guesses correctly with a ridiculously long and specific answer that leaves his brothers dumbfounded.

Check it out:

It seems safe to assume more Caesars commercials are on the way from the Mannings this season.
