Maryland coach Mike Locksley gets the Duke’s Mayo bath

Maryland earned its coach Mike Locksley a bath of Duke’s Mayo

The University of Maryland defeated North Carolina State, 16-12, in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Friday.

And you know what that means … the Terps’ coach had to sit in the chair for the four-gallon mayo bath thanks courtesy of the game’s sponsor.

The big hat almost helped prevent Locksley from getting totally smothered in mayo.

White the Wolfpack were defeated, their coach Dave Doeren might not have been totally miffed. He isn’t a big fan of the condiment as the viewing audience was told incessantly during the broadcast.

Former Texas A&M defensive lineman Jay Arnold has quite the Duke’s Mayo Bowl task

Mayo was the star of the day at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl

Former Texas A&M defensive lineman Jay Arnold had a different task to tackle during Friday’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Arnold was honored as the Millionth Fan and as a result, he was given a container — bucket — of Duke’s Mayo to devour during the game between North Carolina State and Maryland.

After the game, there will be Duke’s “dumpers.” Those are the people who get to drench the winning coach in Duke’s Mayo.

Here’s how Kevin DeValk earned the honor:

A Wisconsin native, DeValk didn’t join the Duke’s fandom until 10 years ago, when he and his wife moved to North Carolina. The furthest he’s gone with Duke’s Mayo is an attempted chocolate cake, plus a mayonnaise-eggnog concoction.

Allison Vick, the owner and founder of Little Blue Bakehouse in Raleigh, N.C., is the other winner.

Duke’s mayonnaise was “built into your core memories,” the 35-year-old said. She didn’t go without it until 2011, when she moved to Austin, Texas.

“I couldn’t find Dukes anywhere. I found one grocery store. One had teeny, tiny little jars. I bought like seven jars the first day,” Vick said. “And then like by the time I left, you could get Duke’s almost anywhere, but it was like that part of the country hadn’t caught on to how intense the Southern love for Duke’s is.”

And then there was this:

James Franklin’s all-time bowl game record and results

What is James Franklin’s all-time record in bowl games heading into the 2023 Rose Bowl?

Former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno continues to hold the record for the most coaching victories in a college football game with 24, and that record appears to be safe for a few more years. It goes without saying then that current Penn State head coach [autotag]James Franklin[/autotag] has a long way to go to catch up to Paterno.

Entering the 2022-23 bowl season, Franklin has been on the winning side of a bowl game as often as he has been on the losing end. Franklin’s career bowl record of 5-5 is highlighted by a pair of New Years Six bowl game victories in the Fiesta Bowl and Cotton Bowl, and he has taken Penn State to two Rose Bowls since arriving from Vanderbilt. Franklin was 2-1 in bowl games at Vanderbilt, a remarkable feat on its own given Vanderbilt is just 4-4-1 all-time in bowl games.

Franklin coached in Penn State’s first bowl game since being relieved of NCAA sanctions in his first season on the job with a trip to the Pinstripe Bowl in 2014. But Franklin is 0-3 in bowl games against his former foes from the SEC with losses to Georgia, Kentucky, and Arkansas.

Here is a look back at each bowl game coached by Franklin heading into the 2023 Rose Bowl against Pac-12 champion Utah.

Where are Oklahoma and the Big 12 headed in USA TODAY Sports latest Bowl Projections?

Seven Big 12 teams are bowling in USA TODAY Sports’ latest Bowl Projections. Where are the Oklahoma Sooners headed?

At this point through the Big 12 schedule, the TCU Horned Frogs are the last team in the conference with a shot at playing for a national championship. Though they don’t have a ranked team on the remainder of their schedule, the Big 12 championship, assuming they get there unscathed, will be the last shot for the Horned Frogs to stake their claim to a College Football Playoff spot.

The reality is the Horned Frogs may need a lot of help to get to the playoff. As USA TODAY Sports’ Eddie Timanus described in his week nine overreactions, the Horned Frogs’ schedule doesn’t do them any favors.

As for the Horned Frogs, they handled their business at West Virginia, but their non-conference achievements are unexceptional and the remainder of their Big 12 slate affords them no opportunities for top-tier wins except possibly on championship weekend. Would the résumé of an unbeaten ACC or Big 12 champion automatically be viewed as superior to, say, a one-loss SEC or Big Ten runner-up, or a 12-1 Oregon team with only that season-opening loss to Georgia marring a clean Pac-12 record? – Timanus, USA TODAY Sports

Being undefeated may not be enough for TCU. They’ll need to be impressive down the stretch and in the Big 12 title game, which would be their last shot at a ranked win before the playoff committee decides which teams will vie for the national championship.

Elsewhere, USA TODAY Sports Erick Smith projected seven Big 12 teams to land in bowl games this season. Let’s take a look at who’s going bowling.

North Carolina State QB Devin Leary (shoulder) out vs. Syracuse

North Carolina State quarterback Devin Leary will miss Saturday’s game against Syracuse with a shoulder injury

North Carolina State will be without their starting quarterback this weekend.

Devin Leary will miss Saturday’s game against Syracuse with a shoulder injury, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Leary suffered the injury during last week’s game against Florida State, and his timetable for return could be anywhere from a week to six weeks, per Thamel.

This year’s ACC preseason player of the year, Leary is also one of the more intriguing quarterback prospects in the 2023 NFL draft class.

Sporting News sends the Iowa Hawkeyes bowling against N.C. State in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl

Sporting News put out a preseason bowl projection and has the Iowa Hawkeyes going bowling with the North Carolina State Wolfpack.

It’s early and the season hasn’t even kicked off yet, but we do have postseason bowl predictions already underway! It is never too early to start wondering how much time will be needed to be blocked off over Christmas break to watch or travel south for a winter vacation in order to see the Iowa Hawkeyes’ bowl game.

Sporting News’ Bill Bender recently came out with his preseason bowl predictions and he has Iowa appearing in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against the North Carolina State Wolfpack on December 30.

This says one of two things. Iowa is going to outperform expectations this year or North Carolina State is going to underperform. I say this because Iowa was not ranked in the top 25 while the Wolfpack came in at No. 13.

The Hawkeyes have never appeared in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl or any of its previous names (Belk Bowl, Meineke Car Care Bowl, or the Continental Tire Bowl). The Wolfpack have appeared in the game three times under the different bowl names and have a 2-1 record.

This wouldn’t be the first matchup of the schools as they have met three previous times, the most recent being in 1992. North Carolina State holds a 3-0 record over the Hawkeyes.

It’s early and Iowa Hawkeyes coaches, players, and fans are all setting their expectations on a higher bowl destination, but should this come to fruition, there is some solace in the possibility of Kirk Ferentz receiving a mayo bath.

Iowa Hawkeyes ranked No. 28 in the Preseason CBS Sports 131

According to the preseason CBS Sports 131, the Iowa Hawkeyes are just on the outside of the top 25 looking in.

At least according to the CBS Sports experts, the Iowa Hawkeyes are on the outside of the top 25 looking in. In their Preseason CBS Sports’ 131 college football rankings, Iowa checks in as the nation’s No. 28 team. That’s down 10 spots from where the Hawkeyes were ranked headed into the Vrbo Citrus Bowl versus Kentucky.

Of course, the Wildcats handed Iowa a 20-17 defeat in the bowl game and sent the Hawkeyes into the offseason on a disappointing note. Since then, Iowa has been working to replace a star at center in Tyler Linderbaum, who was drafted No. 25 overall by the Baltimore Ravens.

In addition to Linderbaum offensively, the Hawkeyes will be looking to replace 1,000-yard rusher Tyler Goodson who is with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent.

Defensively, much of the retooling will come in the secondary. Gone are longtime starters Dane Belton, Matt Hankins and Jack Koerner. Still, there’s plenty of firepower defensively thanks to the return of star linebackers Jack Campbell and Seth Benson. Jestin Jacobs appears set to emerge as the Hawkeyes’ third talented linebacker in 2022.

Beyond that, the cornerback position boasts an All-American in Riley Moss and Iowa has a series of talented defensive linemen it feels great about. Figuring out how to get the most out of the quarterback competition in either Spencer Petras or Alex Padilla is what will set Iowa up to skyrocket up these rankings quickly.

As it stands, Iowa sees five Big Ten teams ranked in front of them in the initial CBS Sports 131 rankings of 2022. The top ten according to CBS looks like this: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 3 Georgia, No. 4 Utah, No. 5 Clemson, No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 8 Michigan, No. 9 Texas A&M and No. 10 Baylor.

The other Big Ten teams ranked in front of Iowa are No. 15 Wisconsin, No. 18 Penn State and No. 20 Michigan State. The Preseason CBS Sports 131 rankings are compiled from ballots of college football experts across CBS Sports and 247Sports and they will be updated weekly following the conclusion of week one action.

CBS Sports’ top 25 ‘best in college sports’ rankings for the 2021-22 athletic season

CBS Sports released its top 25 rankings for the “best in college sports” of the 2021-22 athletic season. Which programs made the cut?

At the end of last month, the Texas Longhorns captured their second consecutive LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup. That was thanks to three spring national championships and four overall titles by the Longhorns during the 2021-22 athletic season.

It meant Texas finished with 1,449.50 points, which cleared second-place Stanford by nearly 1,000 points (1,352.25). Three Big Ten schools made the top 25 of the LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup, including Michigan at No. 3 (1,245.25), Ohio State at No. 4 (1,184.50) and Wisconsin at No. 24 (795.00).

In the 2021-22 LEARFIELD Directors’ Cup, Iowa finished No. 55 nationally, which was second-to-last among Big Ten teams.

CBS Sports has a different set of rankings that grades the 2021-22 athletic season and it will make Hawkeyes fans much happier. CBS Sports’ “best in college sports” rankings utilizes a weighted formula that recognizes sports with broad interest.

Every FBS program is rated in three sports — football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball — along with two “wild cards” among the school’s most successful spectator sports: baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, gymnastics, lacrosse, hockey and wrestling.

The weighted formula puts 2.5 times as much emphasis on football and 2.0 times as much on men’s basketball compared to the rest of the sports. Teams that do not finish in the final AP Top 25 in football but play in a bowl are awarded 62.5 points (25 x 2.5). (Teams that either opted out of bowl games or saw postseason contests canceled received 62.5 points in football.) Those that make the men’s NIT are given 20 points (10 x 2), while WNIT teams receive 10 points. For all titles settled via bracket, such as the NCAA Tournament, point totals are based on number of participants. All champions in the other sports receive 100 points for a national championship in the formula created by long-time CBS Sports producer J. Darin Darst. – CBS Sports.

A weighted formula probably makes sense to evaluate college sports. At the very least, it gives fans a different set of rankings to use—or ignore—in any argument on which programs had the best athletic years in 2021-22.

Let’s take a look at how CBS Sports ranked the entire top 25 and how their points were allotted.

Phil Steele’s full 2022 preseason college football top 40 rankings

What does Phil Steele’s preseason top 40 look like? Which programs are the favorites to reach the College Football Playoff?

Phil Steele is one of the top voices in all of college football. His annual college football preview magazine is something fans look forward to every year.

Now, we get a look at his preseason top 40 college football rankings. The Iowa Hawkeyes are inside his top 20 after winning the Big Ten West in 2021. How many other Big Ten teams find their way inside the top 40?

According to Phil Steele, seven Big Ten teams will finish inside the top 40. Is one of them perhaps his predicted national champion? Let’s take a look below at how Phil Steele projects all of the top 40 to shake out in 2022.

USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith ranks Iowa No. 11 in post-spring Top 25

USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith has the Iowa Hawkeyes coming in at No. 11 in his post-spring practices rankings.

Some teams have the same old tune. That certainly seems to be the case for the Iowa Hawkeyes as we look at another media outlet’s post-spring practices top 25 rankings. Many of you probably know where this is going as the same thought process seems to be nearing consensus territory.

USA TODAY Sports’ Erick Smith places the Hawkeyes at No. 11 in his post-spring practices rankings. This comes in quite a bit higher than the 247Sports post-spring rankings where Iowa barely cracked the top 25.

Let me know if you’ve heard this before. The Hawkeyes will go as far as its quarterback play will take them. That’s because no program may be more frustratingly consistent than Iowa. The defense again looks like one of the best in the Big Ten. Defensive back [autotag]Riley Moss[/autotag] and linebacker [autotag]Jack Campbell[/autotag] will be two of the leaders. The offense, however, has to get out of the bottom half of the conference to go beyond just being a very good team and that starts with [autotag]Spencer Petras[/autotag]. A starter for the past two seasons, Petras hasn’t been able to generate enough consistent big plays in the passing game to get the Hawkeyes past their difficult opponents. He’ll have the benefit of tight end [autotag]Sam LaPorta[/autotag] and a strong offensive line. Now he has to deliver. – Smith, USA Today

The thoughts from Smith hit home to many Iowa fans as it has been the same case for the last few years. The defense and special teams are great, but what sort of output can the quarterback provide always looms large.

The top five in Smith’s rankings for USA TODAY Sports are the usual suspects. AlabamaGeorgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Clemson in that order, begin the list. The Hawkeyes find themselves coming in at No. 11 right behind a few unusual names such as North Carolina State and BYU.

Behind the blueblood programs, there is a chance for Iowa to find themselves among the top teams like we saw last fall when they climbed all the way up to No. 2 in the country following a 6-0 start.

With a bit of solid quarterback play paired with this defense, Smith’s sentiment about Iowa taking the next step resounds quite loudly. The opportunity to catapult into that next tier is right in front of the Hawkeyes and media outlets believe it is almost solely dependent on the offensive output.
