WATCH: Chiefs WR Nikko Remigio makes astounding catch vs. CB L’Jarius Sneed

#Chiefs receiver Nikko Remigio made an unbelievable leaping catch against L’Jarius Sneed during Kansas City’s Sunday practice session.

Highlights from the Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp practices in St. Joseph just keep pouring in, and undrafted receiver Nikko Remigio was the latest of the team’s pass catchers to make an unbelievable grab during workouts on Sunday.

Working against cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, Remigio lept high in the air, turning his body mid-flight to adjust to a well-placed pass before hauling the ball in and landing hard on the ground. Video of the catch was shared on some of the Chiefs’ social media pages but was posted to Twitter by user @InHarmsWay19.

This magnificent snag looked like something straight out of a “Madden” video game and is sure to buy Remigio favor with Kansas City’s fans ahead of the Chiefs’ three-game preseason schedule.

Watch for Remigio to continue making stellar plays like this in practice as he fights for a spot on Kansas City’s 53-man roster or practice squad for the Chiefs’ 2023 campaign.

WATCH: Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes connects with rookie WR Nikko Remigio for training camp touchdown

#Chiefs rookie WR Nikko Remigio had the play of the day at training camp on Wednesday, catching an on-the-run pass from Patrick Mahomes in 7-on-7 drills.

Kansas City Chiefs rookies and quarterbacks hit the practice field for the first time on Wednesday since reporting to training camp on Tuesday.

While draft picks had their opportunities to shine, it was an undrafted free agent wide receiver that came away with the play of the day. During 7-on-7 team drills, rookie WR Nikko Remigio (formerly of Fresno State) caught a  pass from Chiefs starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes left the pocket on the play and found Remigio breaking free near the endzone. The 27-year-old gunslinger unloaded a pass to the rookie wideout, throwing it out of reach of the defensive back in coverage. Remigio was able to elevate slightly to catch the pass over the defender and spin into the endzone for a touchdown.

In the background, you can hear Chiefs’ second-year RB Isiah Pacheco cheering on his new teammates and getting hyped about the productive play for the offense.

The wide receiver position is one to watch for Kansas City during training camp. These early days of training camp practice are allowing some of the rookies to get a jump on their veteran competition. It also serves as a reminder that the competition at the bottom of the roster will be fierce.

Chiefs UDFA Spotlight: Fresno State WR Nikko Remigio

Our #Chiefs UDFA Spotlight Series continues with a dangerous return man and receiver out of Fresno State.

After becoming a two-time All-Trinity Leaguer at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, Remigio received offers from UCLA, USC, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Illinois and Cal. He decided to head up the coast and commit to the Golden Bears where he’d spend the first four years of his college career.

Ahead of the 2022 college football season, Remigio used his final year of eligibility to transfer to Fresno State. He nearly matched his career numbers at Cal in a single season with the Bulldogs, earning Second-Team All-Mountain West honors at both the wide receiver and return specialist positions

Chiefs UDFA WR Nikko Remigio details experience in Kansas City so far

#Chiefs UDFA WR Nikko Remigio recently spoke about joining the reigning Super Bowl champs and the work he’s put in so far with his new team.

Kansas City Chiefs rookie wideout Nikko Remigio is adjusting well to life in the NFL. The former Fresno State Bulldog joins a talented wide receiver corps looking to build on a championship season.

Speaking with KFSN-TV’s Stephen Hicks, Remigio spoke about his experience joining the reigning Super Bowl champions as an undrafted free agent.

“You know, obviously, just playing in a really phenomenal, talented organization,” Remigio said. “Their past season speaks to the quality of the guys in the room, the quality of coaches on the staff and everybody just within the organization. It has been a great learning process for me and I’m just soaking it all in, each and every day.”

What exactly was it like for Remigio to join an NFL team with such notoriety and star power? After the initial shock of making it to the league went away, he’s been all business with his new teammates.

“I think the first day at rookie minicamp, stepping on the field in general and wearing the Chiefs jersey and being on the Chiefs’ practice field was a surreal moment for me,” Remigio said. “Seeing those guys in the locker room, it’s like, ‘Oh shoot, that’s Patrick Mahomes.’ My locker is two lockers down from Travis Kelce’s, so that was definitely a surreal moment, first getting into the building and being around those guys. At the end of the day, they’re here for a job, just like myself and it’s good to be able to work with and learn and be with those guys.”

Remigio shares an agent with Patrick Mahomes, so before he was even in Kansas City, he had correspondence with the reigning league MVP. Mahomes coached Remigio up on what to expect with the Chiefs and the type of preparation that he’d need to make it in the league.

“Those guys have been extremely helpful with learning the playbook, understanding defenses and just subtle, little details as far as being able to elevate my game and see the game from a different perspective,” Remigio said. “The playbook is definitely no joke. It lives up to all the hype and there’s a lot to learn. There (are) a lot more little nuanced details that you have to learn. Coming in, for somebody like myself, just trying to add versatility to my game and not be confined to one position.”

The rookie says he’s loving the challenge of trying to learn all of the different positions and nuances within Andy Reid’s offense. He’s seeing constant growth as a football player, especially as he tries to lock down a role for 2023.

“My role is getting in anywhere where I can,” Remigio said. “The receiver role isn’t confined to just the slot. It kind of makes learning the playbook a little more challenging because I’m not learning just one position, but I’m learning every position. If my number gets called, my name gets called, I’m ready, I’m prepared. I’m obviously learning every receiver position and then, as you said, special teams is a huge component of the game, especially for a guy like myself. Coming into the league as an undrafted guy, I’m going to have to make a name for myself on special teams.”

It remains to be seen if Remigio can make a push for the 53-man roster, but he clearly has the mindset necessary to do so. For his case, it all starts with soaking up everything he can about the playbook and creating value on both offense and special teams.

The versatile Bulldogs wide receiver made waves in his one year at Fresno State. Can he do the same as a NFL Draft pick?

Dangerous with the ball in his hands.

It seems like, every year, the Mountain West has at least one prospect who only spent a year in the conference but made it a memorable one. This year, Nikko Remigio headlines that list.

A native of Orange, California, Remigio committed to Cal out of high school and spent four years with the Golden Bears as a wide receiver and return specialist before transferring to Fresno State ahead of the 2022 season. It didn’t take much time to endear himself to the Red Wave on both fronts and he finished second in the Mountain West with 116.6 all-purpose yards per game, good enough to earn a pair of second-team all-conference nods.

Fans in the Central Valley had their eyes opened to what Remigio can do in a strong offense, but will NFL war rooms buy in during this year’s NFL Draft?

Highlights

Strengths

Want a pass catcher who can also contribute on special teams? That’s a feature which could separate Remigio from other prospects: Between 2021 and 2022, he scored three times on kicks and punts, averaging 25.7 yards per return on the former and 12.6 yards on the latter. He’s also remarkably sure-handed since he had a drop rate of only 6% on 250 career targets, including a 3.9% in his lone year with the Bulldogs.

As you might expect from someone who’s been reliable on multiple fronts, Remigio also gets high marks for his quickness and agility. The Draft Network’s Bradley Weissman remarks that he has “crisp lateral cuts to create separation” while NFL Draft Buzz praises his “smoothness and balance”.

Weaknesses

Fairly or not, Remigio may get dinged by the fact that, according to Pro Football Focus, 90.4% of his collegiate snaps came from the slot. Without the 4.4 40-yard speed of other potential late-round prospects like Tre’Shaun Harrison or Demario Douglas, NFL teams may be inclined to pass on him.

Because the slot is his likely role no matter whether he is drafted or not, Remigio will also need to ensure his toughness is enough to beat press coverage at the line of scrimmage. Weissman is confident in his ability to create after the catch, but that won’t mean much if he can’t get the ball in the first place.

Draft Prediction

Remigio’s ceiling as a NFL prospect is pretty well defined, so whether he’s selected or not may depend on just how much teams value what he can bring to the table on special teams. I don’t think he’ll get drafted, but I also think he won’t linger long in the open market as an undrafted free agent.
