Former Spartans embrace MSU football coach Jonathan Smith

Two former Spartans shared a moment with Jonathan Smith after MSU’s win over Maryland:

Michigan State football is known for having a family community and atmosphere around the program. Even though Smith is in his first year with the program, and had not coached the players of the past, he is very open about having the former players back inside the building and around the program.

That sentiment showed true in College Park, when former Spartans Ben VanSumeren and Nick Samac were on MSU’s sidelines. After the game, they were spotted embracing a moment with coach Smith.

The Packers were dominant on the ground, amassing 193 rushing yards, as Ellis Merriweather led all ball carriers with 16 yards for 74 yards. The Packers held the ball for nearly ten minutes longer than the Ravens and out-gained Baltimore by 326 yards to 177 for John Harbaugh’s bunch. Former Michigan State football center getting first team reps for Baltimore Ravens

A former Spartan is making a case for why he should make the Baltimore Ravens roster

Last year, center Nick Samac was one of the few bright spots on a rough offensive line unit for Michigan State football. Now, he’s making the case to make the final roster for the Baltimore Ravens.

Samac, who was the Ravens’ seventh-round draft pick in the 2024 NFL draft, has been getting first team reps for the Baltimore Ravens with Tyler Linderbaum injured. Samac has made the most of that opportunity, and he has been getting noticed by head coach John Harbaugh, as reported by Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic:

Zrebiec also added thoughts that this indicates Samac’s chances to make the roster are much better now than they were just a few weeks ago.

Samac was recently the No. 2 offensive player in the Ravens preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Baltimore hosted Philadelphia at M&T Bank Stadium, with both teams on similar arcs, and championship paths. Starting quarterback Lamar Jackson sat out along with key starters on both sides of the football.

Eagles kicker Jake Elliott made a 49-yard field goal with no time remaining to give the Philadelphia Eagles a 16-13 victory after Baltimore quarterback Emory Jones — who had just entered the game — was sacked and fumbled on the next play.

The recovery by Patrick Johnson gave Elliott his final opportunity of the night.

The Baltimore Ravens entered the 2024 NFL Draft needing to address the offensive line with multiple selections. After taking Washington offensive tackle Roger Rosengarten in the second round, the Ravens did not select another offensive lineman until the seventh round when they took Michigan State center Nick Samac with the No. 228 overall pick.

Similar to fourth-round wide receiver Devontez Walker earlier in the day, Samac had an emotional phone call with general manager Eric DeCosta and head coach John Harbaugh after being drafted by Baltimore.

After losing center Sam Mustipher in free agency, Samac has a clear path to earning the backup role to starter Tyler Linderbaum. Samac could also compete for a starting guard position after the Ravens lost both Kevin Zeitler and John Simpson in free agency.

Baltimore has a notable track record of developing mid-to-late-round offensive linemen, with recent examples including Ben Powers, Bradley Bozeman, and even the undrafted Patrick Mekari. While Samac might not see the field right away for the Ravens, there is a solid chance that he could find his way into the lineup down the road after learning under renowned offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris.
