Jared Goff and David Montgomery nominated for FedEx Player of the Week honors

The award is decided via fan voting, so vote for Goff and Montgomery (link included)

Sunday’s offensive eruption by the Detroit Lions has two players in line for some weekly honors. Lions QB Jared Goff and RB David Montgomery are nominees for the FedEx Air and Ground Players of the Week, respectively.

It’s the second nomination for each of them in 2023 and the first time Lions players are up for the awards in the same week in at least four years.

Goff is up against Geno Smith of the Seahawks and Dak Prescott of the Cowboys. Montgomery and his 116 rushing yards face off against Houston’s Devin Singletary and Jaylen Warren of the Steelers.

The award is decided via fan voting. You can vote for Montgomery and Goff here.

Texans QB C.J. Stroud picks up MVP consideration

Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud has picked up at least one MVP consideration after his Week 10 performance.

C.J. Stroud should be in the NFL MVP conversation. Anyone inside Space City over the past couple of weeks would agree with that premise.

However, it takes on a different feel when decision-makers who cast votes for the actual award start to drum up such talk.

According to Peter King from NBC Sports, the Houston Texans rookie quarterback made a convincing case throughout the club’s 30-27 win over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 10. King noted that Stroud is on his ballot for MVP.

Considering the gravitas King has as an NFL writer since the 1980s, it isn’t hyperbole. The No. 2 overall pick’s performance against the Bengals sealed it.

Stroud’s 22 going on 32, and after the game sounded like he’d been in this situation 63 times before, and he wasn’t too upset about it. There is a sense of calm in Stroud’s orbit, the kind of calm a 22-year-old kid should not have.

“I mean, this game, it’s a players’ game,” Stroud said from the Houston locker room. “I’ve had a lot of respect for Cam Taylor-Britt over the years. He’s a player. Made a hell of a play. Of course, I just should have taken the sack there and punted. But the type of person I am, a one-play-at-a-time guy, that’s not gonna kill me. And my teammates on the sideline helped me a lot. Just telling me, ‘You’re good bro.’”

No Texans quarterback has finished in MVP voting. The closest a Texans player has come to claiming MVP was in 2014 when J.J. Watt finished second in MVP voting.

Snap count notes: Deep rotation on defense didn’t work vs. Chargers

Snap count notes: Deep rotation on defense didn’t work vs. Chargers but the RB rotation did

Defense was largely optional in the Detroit Lions’ 41-38 win in Los Angeles over the Chargers in Week 10. After a solid first few possessions, the Lions defense was the football equivalent of using an overripe banana as a hammer.

No matter what combination of personnel defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn trotted out against Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense, the banana kept getting smushed. And Glenn certainly tried mixing things up.

Aidan Hutchinson was the primary workhorse, with the DE playing 59 of the 72 snaps. The other EDGE spot rotated between several players and combinations:

Josh Paschal – 39

John Cominsky – 27

Julian Okwara – 22

Charles Harris – 18

Romeo Okwara – 18

That entire grouping aside from Hutchinson netted three total tackles and one QB pressure for the game.

The secondary was consistent. The primary five DBs — Brian Branch, Cam Sutton, Jerry Jacobs, Tracy Walker and Kerby Joseph — all played at least 60 of the 72 snaps. Will Harris saw five snaps in spot relief, with Ifeatu Melifonwu on the field for two and Khalil Dorsey for one, a play where Jacobs had to sit after needing attention from trainers.

On offense, the entire line played the whole game intact. Jared Goff also played all 66 offensive snaps. Rookie TE Sam LaPorta played 53, with Brock Wright on for 34 and James Mitchell chipping in another seven at TE, showing the Lions’ emphasis on 2-TE sets against a very talented Chargers defensive front.

The running back and wide receiver snap counts have an interesting breakdown. With both Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery healthy at RB, Gibbs played 38 snaps to Montgomery’s 25. Reserve Craig Reynolds played three. Add those up and you get 66, shelving the idea of using Gibbs and Montgomery together for at least another week.

At wideout, Amon-Ra St. Brown played 61 of 66 snaps, followed by Josh Reynolds at 46. Jameson Williams asserted himself as WR3 by outrepping Kalif Raymond 34 to 17.

Bengals snap count takeaways from loss to Texans in Week 10

Bengals snap counts from the loss to the Texans.

The Cincinnati Bengals fell flat in a big way during a Week 10 loss to the Houston Texans, falling to 5-4 before a quick turnaround to a crucial Thursday night game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Along the way, Joe Burrow’s offense struggled for most of the game and the defense never put up much of a fight, losing star defensive end Trey Hendrickson to injury in the process.

Here’s a quick look at some snap count takeaways:

  • Despite the back issue and needing a morning workout to prove he was even able to go, Ja’Marr Chase played 84 percent of the snaps and led the team with five catches for 124 yards and a score.
  • Trenton Irwin saw the biggest uptick of work with Tee Higgins out, playing 81 percent of the snaps and catching a touchdown.
  • Drew Sample actually out-snapped Irv Smith by a few percentage points.
  • Joe Mixon continues to dominate the backfield, this time at 73 percent, which could have long-term repercussions if he’s burnt out by the time of a possible playoff berth.
  • Nick Scott continues to get a ton of looks at safety over rookie Jordan Battle, playing 84 percent.
  • Trey Hendrickson played a pretty typical 75 percent of the snaps before the injury at the very end of the game.
  • Rookie DJ Turner continues to learn on the fly to up-and-down results, playing more than 70 percent this time.
  • Even with Sam Hubbard out, rookie Myles Murphy only played 36 percent of the snaps, with Joseph Ossai getting 28 percent. They desperately need a non-Hendrickson name to step up and apply pressure.

5 big takeaways from Patriots 10-6 loss vs Colts in Germany

5 big takeaways from the Patriots dropping their eighth loss of the season on Sunday to the Colts.

The New England Patriots traveled to Germany on Sunday to take on the Indianapolis Colts. It was a fitting game for a crowd used to low scoring “football,” as both teams combined for just one touchdown and four total scores throughout the contest.

And the 10-6 final scoreline reflected terribly on the Patriots. New England’s defense shut down the Indianapolis offense throughout the entire game, but just could not muster a shred of offense on their end to complement the defensive unit.

The game ultimately ended in an ugly manner for the Patriots, with quarterbacks Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe each throwing bad interceptions late in the game that sealed the loss for New England.

Here are five big takeaways from the game.

WATCH: DeMeco Ryans gives Texans ‘Victory Monday’ following win over Bengals

Houston Texans coach DeMeco Ryans gave his team “Victory Monday” following their 30-27 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

The only thing that could be better than beating a conference behemoth would be a day off.

That is precisely what coach DeMeco Ryans granted the Houston Texans following their 30-27 win over the Cincinnati Bengals Nov. 12 during Week 10 at Paycor Stadium.

What more could Ryans ask of his defense after they limited the Bengals to 380 total yards and 20 first downs? What more could Ryans ask of his offense, which posted 544 yards and had his rookie quarterback throw for 356 yards?

The Texans’ first practice of the week is Wednesday as they gear up for the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11 at NRG Stadium.

NFL fans had mixed feelings about Tony Romo calling the Lions a Super Bowl-caliber team

Tony Romo is the last person Lions fans should want calling their team a Super Bowl contender.

One thing has been clear about the 2023 Detroit Lions: they are no longer a bottom feeder. Dan Campbell and Co. have built a real NFC power, a team that can not only win its first NFC North title in decades but also, perhaps, contend for a championship.

CBS announcer Tony Romo seems to agree.

After the 7-2 Lions held serve in a 41-38 thrilling win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Romo didn’t mince his words. He called them a “formidable team” who can indeed contend for Super Bowl 58 this February.

I mean, sure. Why not? There don’t appear to be too many real juggernauts this season. The Lions are definitely in that mix!

The Lions have all the hallmarks of a championship team. They’re solid in both trenches, with Pro Bowl-caliber talents like Penei Sewell and Aidan Hutchinson. They have a solid quarterback in Jared Goff. They have the playmakers — led by Amon-Ra. St. Brown. And you better believe Campbell is a good enough coach.

But with all due respect to Romo, maybe Detroit should win its division title first before it starts talking Super Bowl.

Bengals’ Trey Hendrickson seen getting MRI after injury vs. Texans

Bengals star pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson suffered an injury at the end of the loss to the Texans.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson apparently needed an MRI after suffering a leg injury late during Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans.

Well after a play, a Texans player was shoved to the ground and in the process of falling, rolled-up on Hendrickson’s leg. The result was the star defensive end leaving the field with trainers.

Later, Jay Morrison of Pro Football Network noted that Hendrickson went for an MRI in the locker room.

According to Mike Petraglia of CLNS Media, though, Hendrickson didn’t have a notable limp later.

Right after the game, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said that due to the timing of the injury, he didn’t have any knowledge of severity.

Cincinnati can’t afford to go without Hendrickson, one of the league’s most efficient pass-rushers. But any sort of injury presents a serious problem this week considering they turn around and play the Baltimore Ravens this Thursday.

Update: Hendrickson suffered a hyperextended knee and will miss time.

Lions social media team trolls the critics of their 2023 draft strategy

The Lions social media team clapped back against the “but positional value” critics of their 2023 draft

Dan Campbell’s players weren’t the only members of the Detroit Lions to notch a win on Sunday. The Lions’ social media team added a “W” of its own with a fantastic postgame post.

The Lions won in Los Angeles with key contributions from rookies Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, Brian Branch and Jack Campbell. That quartet wasn’t so popular when they were all selected in the first two rounds of the 2023 NFL draft. Arguments about poor positional value and “coulda, shoulda” drafted others rained down on Detroit GM Brad Holmes and the team from analysts near and far.

It’s become a sore point for the Lions, who prioritize getting good players who fit the team a lo more than chasing bigger names at sexier positions. The social media team fired back after the game with this epic post:

Those rookies, notably Gibbs and LaPorta, are a big part of why the Lions are now 7-2 and have an even brighter future.
