Due to the coronavirus pandemic, ESPN and the NFL Network will air a singular presentation of the 2020 NFL Draft in its virtual format.

Maurice Jones-Drew says he wants to see Jags better their defense through 2020 draft

NFL Network analyst and former Jacksonville Jaguar Maurice Jones-Drew discusses what the Jags should do in the 2020 draft.

Despite the tireless work he puts into being a sports analyst, former Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew often makes the time to talk about his former team throughout the years. That was the case this year when he joined Jaguars.com’s Brian Sexton to discuss the current state of the team and league.

In the last part of their 1-on-1, Sexton asked Jones-Drew who are some players that would excite him if the Jags acquired them on opening night and Jones-Drew said Clemson linebacker, Isaiah Simmons. He continued to call him the best player in the draft then explained why it would be important for the Jags to add an elite player like him to their defense.

“If you’re going to give Gardner [Minshew] an opportunity to remain the starting quarterback like I’ve heard multiple times and all the reports we’ve heard, I’d want to better this defense because when that unit was one of the best in the league you had more opportunities offensively,” Jones-Drew said. “[Back in 2017] it gave Blake Bortles and the offense more chances to score. Remember that time where Blake got hot for about a month and the Jags were the scariest team in the league? They had a top defense and a hot quarterback. It was like, Woah! So, in my mind, I want to go back to that.”

Simmons undoubtedly would add a very versatile piece to the Jags’ defense. Of the many positions he could play, the Jags would probably put him at safety as the linebacking corps and nickelback position have established starters.

As for Jones-Drew’s statements about building up the defense, he certainly makes a solid point. The problem with that is the fact that the unit has so many holes to the point where it could take a while to build up. That said, it would be much easier to address the offensive side as they have the most talent on the team and are just a player or two away from being an impressive group.

Either way, the Jags can come out of this draft with a solid nucleus as they have 12 picks. Simply put, if they stick to a best available player approach, they will come out of the draft greatly improved.

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah projects the Eagles draft decision at pick No. 21

Daniel Jeremiah projects Oklahoma linebacker Kenneth Murray to the Philadelphia Eagles at pick No. 21

As the 2020 NFL Draft quickly approaches, it appears that the experts and analysts believe that the Eagles are trending towards possibly selecting a defender.

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah just completed his third mock draft and he now has the Eagles adding a versatile Big 12 defender in Oklahoma star linebacker, Kenneth Murray.

PICK

21

Kenneth Murray – LB
School: Oklahoma | Year: Junior

The Eagles need to add receivers, but they can afford to wait a round or two. Murray would give them a dynamic playmaker in the middle of their defense.

The Eagles have been linked to a pass-catcher since the season ended, but with a historic batch of wideouts entering the NFL, Howie Roseman may choose to secure two or more wideouts in the second or thirds rounds.

League to announce 58 prospects to participate in NFL virtual draft

The National Football league is set to announce the 58 prospects who will be participating virtually in this year’s NFL draft.

The 2020 NFL Draft is just weeks away and will be broadcast as scheduled using a completely virtual format. With all team facilities closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, club coaches, staff members and select NFL hopefuls will be participating from remote locations.

Putting together all the logistics for the new format has been harried to say the least, but the league is almost set to announce the 58 prospects who will be participating in the NFL draft’s virtual production.

We know of five players who have been confirmed to appear so far: LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts, Ohio State defensive end Chase Young, Alabama receiver Jerry Jeudy and Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor.

The remaining 53 prospects will be announced Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m. PT on the NFL Network’s “Path to the Draft.” The NFL draft will take place April 23-25 and will be televised by numerous outlets and on multiple platforms.

Several NFL insiders continue to emphasize Jags’ preference to keep Yannick Ngakoue

Yannick Ngakoue is the hottest name on the trade market currently but it appears Shad Khan would prefer to keep him over trading him.

Yannick Ngakoue wants out of Jacksonville but it remains to be seen if he’ll get his request. At this point, most of the fanbase is simply ready for the team to make a move so the organization can simply move away from the fractured relationships caused during Tom Coughlin’s tenure. However, it appears he lead man in the organization, Shad Khan, really would like to keep Ngakoue according to several insiders.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently spoke on the matter to 97.5 the Fanatic of Philadelphia. He went into details of when Ngakoue could be traded in his eyes, what the Jags may want, and emphasized that Khan would prefer to keep him.

“I still think the team; the Jaguars have to move him during the draft. You know, the week of the draft, during the draft, my guess is these are usually deals that are made often while teams are on the clock. They’re going to want back significant compensation for him. It remains to be seen how much they actually will get back. There will be people in that organization, like the owner, who will not want to move him, which means that they’ll be firmer on their price. But if they don’t trade him, then they’ve got a mess on their hands. And I believe the guy, the player, when he said that he doesn’t plan to play for them again. I believe he will continue to sit, so that’s not good for anybody.

I think that the right thing for them to do logistically is to move on from him. And so they’re gonna want a first-round pick, maybe then some for him. I don’t know whether they’ll get a first-round pick for him or not, we’ll see how it shakes out. It could be swapping draft spots; it could be swapping picks; it could be any combination of factors that get a deal done. Now, in the end I would guess that they do trade him. I think they have to. I think that’s the best thing for everybody involved. I don’t think they want that headache on their hands, and I think the owner will see that eventually.”

In terms of the compensation, it’s possible that a team may be willing to give up what the Kansas City Chiefs did for Frank Clark last year as the draft gets closer, which was their 2019 first-round selection, 2020 second rounder, and swapped thirds for 2019.

As an analyst well connected with the Jags, CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco echoed those sentiments about Khan wanting to keep Ngakoue, too, on a debate with Jason La Canfora via 105.7 The Fan of Baltimore.

“I hear the owner doesn’t want to trade him no matter what because it’s a bad look for the organization. These guys complain and then you get traded. I’m telling you, unless they get their socks knocked off on some deal [they won’t trade him], which, by the way, isn’t happening. There’s not a lot out there for those pass rushers and we saw that [during the offseason]. Look at [Jadeveon] Clowney. He’s floundering looking for money. He initially asked for $22 million.”

While he didn’t say Khan’s name specifically, NFL insider Ian Rapoport also told Jags Wire something along the lines of Prisco and Schefter, stating that he believes if the Jags had it their way they prefer to have Ngakoue play for them. While Ngakoue’s mind is seemingly made up, Rapoport also added that players have changed their minds in the past about their stance on an organization.

“He is a great asset for Jacksonville. I think if they could just do whatever they wanted, whatever it is, I think they would have him play for them this year. He is a great player. If it’s just on the tag, I think that would be OK for them.

The other thing I’ll say, and I don’t know what’s going to end up happening, if he plays on the tag this year and the experience is OK [maybe] he decides to re-sign. I’ve seen situations where players have called teams a lot of things and ended up back there. Maybe this is a little different but I would think if Jacksonville had the choice, they would have him play for them this season.”

When reflecting on the past, Khan expressed a similar message about cornerback Jalen Ramsey last season after their saga with him, however, they ended up trading him anyway. It’s worth noting that Khan probably would’ve stuck with his word but the Los Angeles Rams’ offer was just too good for the Jags to pass up.

With Ngakoue I’m sure they would do the same if they were offered two more first-round selections. However, that’s unlikely, and instead, they may get an offer closer to the one I mentioned with Clark earlier at best. That would then lead to the question of whether or not that’s good enough for Khan to come off the disgruntled pass-rusher, but only time will tell.

‘No teams past Lions’ have reached out to Chase Young for pre-draft interviews

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that “No teams past Lions” have reached out to Chase Young for a pre-draft interview.

Every year, during on-field drills at the NFL Combine, Hall-of-Famer Deion Sanders re-tells a story of how during his Combine in 1989, he would refuse to interview with any team not picking in the Top-5 of the draft because there was no way he was dropping any further than that.

As it turns out, Sanders was correct: he was drafted fifth overall by the Atlanta Falcons.

With limited opportunities to conduct official interviews, players and teams will often be diligent, but stingy, in who they choose to spend their valuable time with.

With the most elite prospects, teams will often not pursue a player most don’t anticipate will be available to them. This could be because they don’t believe they have a chance to land said player, or they are putting up a smokescreen trying to disguise intentions.

This situation appears to be playing out once again this year with Ohio State EDGE rusher Chase Young, as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that “no teams past (the) Lions” have reached out to Young for a pre-draft interview.

With the Cincinnati Bengals drafting LSU quarterback Joe Burrow a near lock, that leaves Washington and the Detroit Lions as Young’s most likely suitors.

If Washington elects to trade out of the two spot, it’s possible a team who has been laying a smokescreen targets Young and executes a trade. But with several quarterback-needy teams also picking at the top of the draft, it’s just as likely a team trading up is targeting Tua Tagovailoa (QB, Alabama) or Justin Herbert (QB, Oregon).

If a quarterback does get selected at pick No. 2 overall, expect the Lions to draft Young.

The Lions have routinely been connected to Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah or accepting a trade down scenario, — both very appealing options — but make no mistake, if Young is available at pick No. 3, all indications are he will be wearing Honolulu Blue.

Are chances of Jadeveon Clowney re-signing with Seahawks slim to none?

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo recently reported that the chances of Jadeveon Clowney re-signing with the Seattle Seahawks are slim to none.

Seattle Seahawks fans received a disappointing piece of news Tuesday when NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the chances of defensive end Jadeveon Clowney returning to the Emerald City are slim to none.

Garafolo joined Seattle Sports Radio KJR and stated the Seahawks are not chasing Clowney at the moment and are instead pursuing alternative options along the defensive line.

The Seahawks have already added defensive ends Bruce Irvin and Benson Mayowa to the roster this free agency period.

Clowney has been waiting for the right deal over the last few weeks and he appears to have still not found what he is seeking after lowering his asking price.

There is no question that he will sign with an NFL team, it is simply a matter of which team he chooses and when he signs, however, some clubs may need to move forward sooner than later with the NFL draft set to kick off on April 23.

2020 NFL Draft to take place in ‘fully virtual’ format

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, league commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to all 32 teams, informing them that the league will conduct a “fully virtual draft.”

The NFL had already decided that the upcoming 2020 Draft would be done different. Fans were uninvited to the event, something they usually play a big part of.

Now teams have followed suit on Monday, as they also had their invites to any sort of in-person gathering revoked as well.

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, league commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to all 32 teams, informing them that the league will conduct a “fully virtual draft.” Including in that is no gatherings at team faculties. The Bills’ front office staff, such as head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane, are not allowed to meet at One Bills Drive in Orchard Park this year during the event. That’s what the typically do, and instead, will be kept separately and digitally connected.

Beane recently spoke reporters via video call, and one topic that was discussed was such a scenario unfolding. At that point, the NFL had not given any insight into how things will play out, but he said the Bills would be ready, regardless.

“We’re going to be ready for all scenarios. Sean and I have had meetings with coaches, personnel, our football ops, all sorts of people just planning for whatever hand we’re dealt, and I think that’s the best we can all do no matter what our profession is,” Beane said.

Here is the full release from the league to teams:
