Daniel Jeremiah takes strong stand on Commanders No. 2 pick

Jeremiah makes it clear that nobody knows what the Commanders are going to do.

Daniel Jeremiah has been around the block a few times.

Jeremiah is not new to the NFL draft or to the NFL draft buildup.

So, watching and listening to the media circus it becomes annually, Jeremiah did not hold back when he was asked about the Commanders’ No. 2 overall selection.

Jeremiah went as far as expressing to Scott Abraham (WJLA TV 7), “I’ve been connecting them (Commanders) with Drake Maye (North Carolina) for a long time…I think anybody that says they know exactly what Washington is doing is lying.”

Just last week Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd boldly stated that he had been told that Washington is going to select Jayden Daniels at the overall No. 2 position in the draft. Seeing Peters has yet to tell anyone, who told Cowherd?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter last week also expressed that all signs were pointing to the Commanders drafting Daniels with the second overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft.

We responded here on Commanders Wire asking if Commanders insiders John Keim, Ben Standig, Nicki Jhabvala, J.P Finlay and Sam Fortier all agree that Adam Peters is providing absolutely no signs right now, then how is it that Cowherd and Schefter know?

We also advised that some in the media were making too much of Daniels being invited for a visit. We explained that we were confident that Maye and McCarthy would also be invited for visits, and sure enough, they were.

Jeremiah is correct, and he is also brave enough to double down that others in his business don’t know what the Commanders are doing either.

Perhaps some in the business feel they need to present an image of having the inside scoop when they actually don’t.

As Adam Peters continues to hold his cards close to his chest, making any “signs” invisible to all concerned, might Jeremiah simply be more willing to be honest that he doesn’t know what Peters is going to do?

As expected Commanders hosting Maye and Daniels next week

The Commanders get some face time with Maye and Daniels next week — one week before the NFL draft.

Well, that didn’t take long.

Just 24 hours ago, Commanders Wire encouraged Commanders fans not to make too much of Tuesday’s announcement that Jayden Daniels would visit the Commanders next week.

Though Adam Schefter, Brian Kelly and Colin Cowherd had all said in the past week that the Commanders were going to draft Daniels, we said, yes, the Commanders may draft Daniels, but those guys don’t actually know whom the Commanders are going to select.

We also declared that Adam Peters would certainly have Drake Maye visit the facility and perhaps J.J. McCarthy as well.

So, Wednesday brought the announcement that North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye will also visit Ashburn next week.

Indeed, Adam Peters, Dan Quinn, and owner Josh Harris have wisely not given any indication to anyone in the media who the Commanders will select with that No. 2 overall selection.

The possibility exists that the three may not only be acting wisely to not publicly declare their intentions. Seeing these three quarterbacks are also receiving such varied evaluations from the draft analysts, could it be that the Commanders trio of Peters, Quinn and Harris honestly, have not yet been able to be in unison regarding the selection?

Perhaps, being undecided, the Commanders are still continuing to do their necessary homework. If that is the case, could it be that this final visit/interview for each next week may be the determining factor in the end?

It’s a huge decision for Quinn and Peters. Just last year, the Panthers took Bryce Young, yet the guy selected next was C.J. Stroud, who had a much better rookie season.

With that in mind, the Commanders may want to conduct one more face-to-face interaction to observe how the young men refer to surprising questions or statements.

Ron Rivera chose Chase Young at No. 2 when quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Justin Herbert were not chosen until the fifth and sixth selections. Rivera never recovered and never obtained the quarterback he needed, either.

Adam Schefter says signs still point to Jayden Daniels going to the Commanders

Schefter is not always right. Remember 2021?

Last week, Adam Schefter of ESPN said he believed LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels would be the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft to the Washington Commanders. The preeminent NFL insider didn’t report Daniels was going to Washington, but his wording was interesting.

Schefter said he and others were discouraged from spoiling the picks ahead of time, but signs pointed to Daniels heading to Washington. Again, it was not a report, just a hunch.

Schefter doesn’t often put his name on something that doesn’t end up being true. Remember in January when everyone else assumed Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson would be Washington’s next head coach? But it was Schefter who threw cold water on that notion.

Sure enough, Schefter was right.

On the latest episode of “The Adam Schefter Podcast,” Schefter doubled down on Daniels and the Commanders.

“I will stand behind that,” Schefter said. “The signs continue to point to Jayden Daniels going number 2 to Washington.”

Schefter said nothing had changed his mind regarding Daniels to the Commanders.

While we should often take what Schefter says to the bank, he’s not always right. Remember in 2021 when the San Francisco 49ers moved up to No. 3 in the draft to select a quarterback? Everyone thought it would be Mac Jones —including Schefter.

It ended up being Trey Lance.

What do these two situations have in common? Current Washington GM Adam Peters was San Francisco’s assistant GM in 2021.

Are all signs pointing Jayden Daniels to the Commanders?

Some perspective on all of the Jayden Daniels’ rumors.

Jayden Daniels is comin’ to town.

Tuesday evening, Ben Standig of the Athletic reported that the Commanders are having Daniels come in for a visit on Monday, April 15.

Three big-name personalities have linked Daniels to the Commanders in the last seven days. Colin Cowherd said Monday he had been told the Commanders were going to draft Daniels.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly, when asked about Daniels last week, commented that Daniels will take good care of himself and that, “He’s going to get the ball out to playmakers and make plays for Washington.”

There was also ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter: “I know we are not supposed to spoil picks. We’ll see how the Commanders decide to move forward with the No. 2 overall selection. But a little over a few weeks out, I think the signs continue to point to Jayden Daniels being the second overall pick at number two.”

In addition, is now the report from Standig that Daniels is coming to Ashburn, so Daniels must be the pick, correct?

Not necessarily.

First, Daniels quarterbacked the last two seasons at LSU. Kelly is simply pumping up his guy to be selected high because, in doing so, Kelly is lauding his football program. What is Kelly supposed to say, “Personally, I think Daniels could be the fourth quarterback drafted?”

Schefter told his listeners he was not supposed to spoil the picks, and then what did he do? He told his audience all signs point to Daniels being the pick.

Further, what did Schefter mean, “The signs continue to point to Daniels …?” What signs? What Adam Peters has been saying? No.

What Dan Quinn has expressed? Not at all.

What owner Josh Harris has publicly said about how they feel about Daniels? Certainly not.

Commanders fans need to remember that John Keim, Ben Standig, JP Finlay, Nicki Jhabvala, and Sam Fortier claim the Commanders have provided no evidence toward any particular quarterback.

But Adam Schefter knows?

Schefter wants his audience to “think” he knows, but what did Schefter actually say?

What about Daniels visiting next week?

Well, don’t you think Adam Peters is also going to bring in Drake Maye for a visit? Might he also bring in J.J. McCarthy?

Commanders fans, it’s true; no one in the media “knows” whom the Commanders are going to draft at No. 2 overall.

Adam Schefter says free agency has helped take pressure off Jets in draft

“They’ve taken the pressure off them with what they’ve done during free agency.” – Adam Schefter

The Jets, unsurprisingly, have been aggressive in free agency and have tried to patch as many holes as possible for this win-now mode in 2024. The Jets filled all three open spots on the offensive line by signing former Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith and former Ravens guard John Simpson as well as trading for Ravens right tackle Morgan Moses.

The Jets also essentially swapped Bryce Huff for Haason Reddick after losing the former to the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency before trading for the latter just last week. Not to mention, the Jets found a new No. 2 wide receiver in former Charger Mike Williams. The Jets are once again all in for this season, knowing major changes are coming if things don’t work out.

Because of all these moves, ESPN’s Adam Schefter believes the pressure is off the Jets and general manager Joe Douglas when it comes to the draft. Schefter spoke with Jets team reporter Ethan Greenberg about his thoughts on the Jets’ free agency and why the Jets now have options when the first round of the draft rolls around on April 25.

“That’s the great part about it,” ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter said at the NFL League Meetings last week in Orlando, via the Jets’ official website. “They addressed so many needs that they don’t have to come away with anything. I don’t mind the idea if there’s a guy like [Michigan QB] J.J. McCarthy still sitting there, if Minnesota or Denver or Las Vegas wants to come up to the Jets spot and the Jets get extra picks, there’s nothing wrong with that. They have options. … They’ve taken the pressure off them with what they’ve done during free agency.”

Before free agency, almost every mock draft had the Jets taking an offensive tackle because it felt like it was a lock the Jets had to address the position in the draft. Then they landed Smith and Moses, so now a tackle doesn’t have to be forced. The Jets absolutely could still take a tackle with the 10th pick, but now the door is open for a wide receiver such as Washington’s Rome Odunze or a tight end like Georgia’s Brock Bowers.

Even a trade, one way or the other, is now not out of the realm of possibility. The Jets do have some flexibility now following their free agency spree and rebuilding the offensive line. Remember, the Jets currently do not have a pick in the second round thanks to the Aaron Rodgers trade. Perhaps they look to trade down to get a pick back in that spot. On the other hand, if the board falls a certain way, an aggressive trade up (Marvin Harrison Jr?) also has to be considered. All options are on the table.

There’s always pressure on a team, especially one in the position the Jets are in. But they’ve made themselves an interesting team to watch later this month in Detroit.

WR Josh Reynolds leaves fellow Aggies alumnus Dan Campbell for multi-year deal in AFC

Following 2-plus years with Detroit, Aggies alumnus Josh Reynolds is departing Dan Campbell’s squad for a multi-year deal with an AFC team.

Following two and a half seasons with the Detroit Lions, Texas A&M alumnus Josh Reynolds is departing fellow former Aggie Dan Campbell‘s squad for a multi-year deal with an AFC team.

According to a report from ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, Reynolds has signed a two-year deal worth up to $14 million with the Denver Broncos.

“It’s awesome, man. My uncles are diehard Broncos fan. Even just saying that y’all were in the mix of things, they were ecstatic. For me to come out here, I hope to change stuff up,” Reynolds told Denver team reporter and producer Sydney Jones. “I’ve always been an admirer of coach Payton. Seeing him with the Saints for so long, I just love his creativeness, I know he’s going to put great people around the facility and I’m just looking forward to working with him. I’m hyped and ready for it.

“I’m on the smoother side but you got a playmaker for sure. Hopefully a guy to help win.”

Reynolds finished the 2023 regular season with 40 receptions for 608 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Report: Commanders and Patriots are ‘apprehensive to trade down’

A new report suggests the Commanders and Patriots are reluctant to move down.

The NFL owners meetings are taking place this week.

There is discussion and voting regarding rule changes, and the media, of course, is finding ways to still talk about the draft ad nauseam until the day it arrives, Thursday, April 25.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter Monday recalled, “At the meeting last year, lots of talk on Aaron Rodgers and Lamar Jackson. This year, it will be the teams trying to come up to Washington’s spot at 2 and New England’s spot at 3 in the draft. Though, both teams are apprehensive to give up those picks.”

The thinking behind such a comment is that both the Commanders and the Patriots are in such dire need of a starting quarterback that they will be more inclined to not want to move back in the draft, choosing to stay put at No. 2 and 3 and therefore selecting their new respective quarterbacks.

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy had his pro day last week and impressed, making a good enough showing that he is being projected even higher up the draft board by increasing numbers of analysts.

He is a good enough athlete that he has entered the second tier of Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, and now McCarthy. McCarthy had initially been graded much lower due to the fact that the Michigan offense was a run-dominated offense.

Commanders head coach Dan Quinn recently referred to Daniels simply as a “game changer.” The signing of Marcus Mariota, also led to many instantly responding it meant the team was going to draft Daniels. But this conveniently ignores the Commanders actually first pursued Sam Darnold prior to Mariota.

All three of the second-tier quarterbacks have much growing to do in their NFL careers. Yet, they have displayed enough talent and mobility that they are considered to be high first-round selections.

If you are the Patriots or Commanders, you don’t want to get too cute here and trade down too far, not obtaining a quality quarterback in the draft.

Thus, the teams might indeed be increasingly apprehensive to trade down, just as Schefter expressed on Monday.

We still have another month of this…

REPORT: Chiefs to trade DB L’Jarius Sneed to Titans

Chiefs reportedly will trade CB L’Jarius Sneed to the Titans

The L’Jarius Sneed era with the Kansas City Chiefs appears to have ended. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs have agreed to trade the veteran cornerback to the Tennessee Titans.

The deal was announced late Friday night, and the Chiefs expect to receive a 2025 third-round pick; the teams will also swap seventh-round picks in next month’s draft. Before becoming official, the trade is pending a physical for Sneed. The Titans are reportedly ready to sign him to a long-term extension following the deal’s completion.

Sneed’s departure is expected to free up $19.8 million against Kansas City’s salary cap. The team initially franchise-tagged the veteran at the start of the offseason.

Sneed earned a solid reputation as a gritty cornerback who could follow and shut down a team’s best wide receiver. The 27-year-old was a fourth-round draft pick in the 2020 NFL draft. During his 57 regular-season games with the Chiefs, he had 10 interceptions and 40 passes defended. In the postseason, he had one interception and seven passes defended in 13 games.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter: “Colts and Chiefs have not discussed a deal for L’Jarius Sneed”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter told Pat McAfee that the #Colts and #Chiefs have not discussed a deal for star DB L’Jarius Sneed

The trade rumors between the Kansas City Chiefs and L’Jarius Sneed gained plenty of steam over the weekend. Many critics believed a deal could be completed soon, and they questioned the details surrounding the alleged conversations.

During his Monday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s Adam Schefter gave insider comments on the rumored trade scenario.

“The Chiefs have no problems right now playing with him on that tag,” Schefter explained. “He wants a long-term deal. So it’s up to him and his agent to see if they can help broker a deal and structure something to get him the long-term security he wants.

“But no, nothing right now has gotten done. The Colts are not expected to be in on him. The Colts and Chiefs have not discussed a deal for L’Jarius Sneed, at least to date. Could that change? You never know. You never know, but nothing, no conversation between those two teams. And that’s where we’re at right now.”

The Colts and Chiefs have been linked regarding Sneed for a while, and even if a deal isn’t being officially worked on, it is still early in the offseason. Schefter made a notable statement about the Chiefs’ willingness to safely move forward with Sneed on a franchise tag in 2024.

Antonio Brown asks Adam Schefter for credit on Russell Wilson scoop

Antonio Brown’s overwhelming desire to be noticed seems to know no limits.

Late Sunday night, the news broke that Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson was planning to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The initial reports came out from all the usual sources including ESPN NFL reporter Adam Schefter.

One guy who wants some credit for the breaking news is former Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown. He tweeted on Friday that his former team was signing Wilson to a one-year deal.

Brown even went so far as to reach out to Schefter in a DM asking for credit for breaking the story two days earlier. Schefter handled Brown like a pro but didn’t offer up the credit, leading Brown to take to social media to talk about it.

If anyone should claim they broke this story it is former NFL receiver Chad Johnson. He called it over a week ago when he said a little bird told him Wilson was headed to the Steelers. Once we knew there was an interest between Wilson and the Steelers it wasn’t hard to connect the dots and assume this is how it would end. But Brown has never been a guy to squander an opportunity to insult someone or beg for attention.
