Sportsbooks appeared to tip off bettors to Jalen Hurts’ injury before the news broke

Hurts’s status for Saturday against Dallas is uncertain. The line movement made that very clear.

The NFL MVP race just got a little more interesting, and oddsmakers got a beat on the public with the latest news.

The leader in the clubhouse for several weeks now, Jalen Hurts’ odds dropped Monday afternoon from -150 to +150 seemingly out of nowhere. Around the same time, his Philadelphia Eagles moved from somewhere around 1-point underdogs against the Dallas Cowboys this week to upwards of five points at some sportsbooks.

With this type of movement, it was only a matter of time before some serious news dropped. And sure enough, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported an injury to Hurts shortly after.

The quarterback suffered a shoulder sprain in Sunday’s win over the Bears, leaving his status for Saturday against Dallas uncertain.

Sportsbooks were able to get ahead of reports and shift odds before more bettors could pounce, but there was a long enough runway for people to jump in somewhere in the middle, and they won’t likely regret it.

The Eagles hold a comfortable three-game lead over Dallas in the NFC East and a two-game lead over the Vikings for the top seed in the conference. So, it’s unlikely they take any chances with Hurts — in Week 16 or later.

With the movement in Hurts’ MVP odds, Patrick Mahomes has overtaken him as the favorite at Tipico Sportsbook. Mahomes has -190 odds to Hurts’ +270. Josh Allen remains third at +700.

Does Micah Parsons deserve MVP award? We ask CeeDee Lamb

USA TODAY Sports interviews Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb and asks whether or not Cowboys defensive player Micah Parsons is an MVP.

Micah Parsons is a beast!

During his rookie year of 2021, the Cowboys linebacker quickly and thoroughly silenced doubters concerned about character issues – a tag which dogged the unanimous AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, once he decided to bolt from Penn State.

Parsons fell into the Cowboys lap as the 12th pick in the draft, and any character concerns have so far not materialized.  Drawing comparisons to the legendary Lawrence Taylor, Parsons’ encore season has proven to be nothing short of magical. Through 13 games, he’s recorded 12 sacks, and has garnered some buzz for the league’s MVP award.

Of course, that award traditionally goes to an offensive player, more precisely a QB, but a case can be made for Parsons to become just the third defender, and first since LT in 1986, to capture the honor.

Sports Seriously recently spoke with teammate CeeDee Lamb about the prospect of the linebacker adding to his ever-growing legacy by capturing the MVP.  And while Lamb didn’t reveal who he thinks should take home the hardware, he indicated Parsons “for sure should be up for defensive player of the year, if not MVP.” “He’s been a train wreck for offensive coordinators, and left tackles, and right tackles,” said Lamb. “He’s been balling.”

Lamb cited a host of unique attributes the 23-year-old outside linebacker brings to the field.   “Try to scramble out of the pocket and he’s going to catch you,” said Lamb. “You have to watch for 11 when he’s out there.”

Bettors are smartly placing their Jalen Hurts MVP wagers ahead of another expected blowout

The MVP favorite rolls into Chicago in Week 15.

With four weeks left to play in the regular season, it’s probably too soon to say Jalen Hurts will win MVP. But the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback is definitely the leader going into Week 15.

At BetMGM, his -165 odds lead the way by a sizable margin over Patrick Mahomes at +200.

Hurts is playing at an elite level, and Philly’s 12-1 record only helps his case. Seeing the way things are trending, bettors jumped on his odds after Sunday’s blowout win over the New York Giants. Of the MVP bets placed since that game, 90% have been on Hurts.

It was smart for bettors to get in now before Philly’s next game.

The Eagles play the Bears this weekend, favored by nine points on the road. And even that spread feels generous considering the Bears allow the fourth-most points to opponents and the Eagles lead the league in scoring.

This game isn’t just an opportunity for the Eagles to add another win to the record, it’s a chance for Hurts to pad his stats and improve his MVP odds. They won’t likely get any longer after Sunday.

While Chicago doesn’t necessarily allow a lot of yards through the air, the reason isn’t because of a good secondary. It’s mostly because the Bears are so bad against the run, that teams don’t have to air it out.

Hurts can do both, and there’s a good chance he puts on a show in Chicago. You can never rule Mahomes out, but he has some work to do if he wants to make up ground.

NFL MVP Odds after Week 14: Jalen Hurts isn’t slowing down

And Tua Tagovailoa’s stock is dropping fast.

For the rest of the NFL season, BetFTW will take a look at the 2022 MVP race, breaking down the contenders and their most recent performances. Check back each Tuesday for a look at how odds have changed and to get an idea of how oddsmakers see things shaping up. Preseason odds can be found here.

With Week 14 in the books, now is as good a time as any to start looking at MVP odds.

The favorites entering the year — Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes — are still among the favorites with four weeks left to play. But some unlikely names have emerged too, making the likelihood of a first-time recipient very high.

These are the leaders, with odds from BetMGM.

How does Eagles’ QB Jalen Hurts compare to other MVP candidates?

With the NFL season hitting its stretch run, we’re looking at how Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts compares to other MVP candidates like Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and Josh Allen

The NFL MVP race is heating up and the only thing we know for sure is that Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts is firmly in the mix for the award.

The reigning Player of the Week, Hurts was honored after his dominant performance against Green Bay last Sunday night, snagging his first career honor.

Hurts gained 157 yards on the ground against the Packers, Breaking Michael Vick’s single-game rushing record set against the Giants in December 2010.

The third-year quarterback also completed 16 of 28 passes for 153 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Eagles raised their record to 10-1 and Hurts became the third quarterback in NFL history – joining Vick and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson – to run for 150-plus yards and throw for 150-plus yards in the same game and the first to do so while throwing a pair of touchdown passes.

Hurts was 29 of 39 passing for 380 yards and three touchdowns becoming the first Eagle to accomplish the feat since Michael Vick in 2010.

With the NFL experts undecided at this point, let’s break down and compare the current favorites.

Darius Slay explains why Jalen Hurts should be the MVP over Patrick Mahomes

Eagles star cornerback Darius Slay lays out all the reasons star quarterback Jalen Hurts should be the MVP over Patrick Mahomes

Darius Slay is having a Pro Bowl and All-Pro type of season, but that doesn’t mean he can’t campaign for his quarterback to snag the NFL’s most important individual honor.

During his ‘Big Play Slay’ Podcast via The Volume, Slay made the case for Hurts to be the Associated Press NFL MVP over Patrick Mahomes.

For Slay, it was all about Mahomes having to throw the ball 50 times a game, while Hurts can beat teams in a variety of different ways.

Hurts is coming off a game in which he threw for 380 yards and three touchdowns (with no interceptions)
while rushing for a touchdown in Philadelphia’s blowout victory over Tennessee.

On the season Hurts has 2,940 yards passing, and 609 yards rushing with 29 touchdowns on the year (20 passing, nine rushing).

Mahomes has logged 3,808 yards passing, 283 rushing yards, and 32 touchdowns (30 passing, two rushing).

Joe Burrow could be ready to make an MVP run for the Bengals. Here’s why.

Here’s how Joe Burrow can win the MVP, starting with a showdown against Patrick Mahomes.

Joe Burrow’s break out season in 2021 led the Bengals to a Super Bowl appearance.

His return from injury, along with the arrival of [autotag]Ja’Marr Chase[/autotag], provided the Bengals with a potent offense. Expectations were raised headed into 2022 – but Burrow didn’t get off to the best start.

He threw four interceptions in the opening loss to the Steelers. In a week two loss in Dallas, he averaged just 5.5 yards per attempt. Since that 0-2 start, the Bengals are 7-2 and sit tied atop the AFC North with the Baltimore Ravens.

They’ve gone on this run behind some strong performances from Burrow. The MVP race is wide open and Burrow is going to get a shot to make his case over the next month. Here the case for Burrow making a run.

Best NFL midseason value bets, including Tyreek Hill for MVP

A little midseason bargain betting.

Week 9 is in the books, which means we’re officially past the halfway mark of the new-ish 17-week NFL season.

That’s enough a sample size of games to have a good idea on which players have the best chances to win different awards, but it leaves just enough time for all of that to change.

If you’re a bettor inclined to throw more money at the favorites and their shorter odds, that’s completely understandable given what they’ve shown already this year. This post isn’t for you.

This is all about the players with longer odds that could potentially make a greater case down the stretch of the season. Let’s get into who those players are.

Odds are from BetMGM

Betting odds have Kirk Cousins firmly in the MVP race

Sportsbooks believe that Cousins has a case to be the NFL MVP

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins has had better stats over the first six games of his career, but he hasn’t had a better record. Sitting at 5-1, Cousins has the Vikings in prime position to make it back to the playoffs and win the NFC North.

Because of the Vikings’ hot start, the betting odds from Tipico Sportsbook have Cousins firmly in the MVP race.

None of the players on this list should be a surprise. Josh Allen had more yards just himself going into week seven than more than two-thirds of the teams in the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts and Joe Burrow all have great cases and Justin Herbert can easily have a great case by the end of the season.

Through six games, Cousins has completed 66.2% of his passes for 1,502 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. With the offense gelling more and more with this new offense those numbers should improve throughout the season.
