Dolphins leave 2024 NFL Honors empty-handed

Two of Miami’s stars lost the votes for awards during the NFL Honors.

The wait is finally over, as the 2023 NFL season is about to wrap up with a Super Bowl battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.

On Thursday, the league handed out their annual awards at their NFL Honors show, and two Miami Dolphins were up for some hardware – Tyreek Hill for Offensive Player of the Year and Tua Tagovailoa for Comeback Player of the Year.

Hill appeared in 16 games, leading the league in receiving yards (1,799) and touchdowns (13) on 119 receptions. He set new franchise single-season records in receiving yards in 2023 after doing the same the year prior.

Tagovailoa dealt with some serious concussion issues in 2022 that kept him off the field for a significant portion of the season, including the team’s first playoff game since 2016. He bounced back with an impressive campaign that saw him play in all 17 regular-season games and lead the league in passing yards with a career-high 4,624. He also set career highs in completion percentage (69.3%) and touchdowns (29).

Despite their incredible seasons, neither Dolphin took home their respective trophies, as Christian McCaffrey was named the Offensive Player of the Year and Joe Flacco won Comeback Player of the Year.

Miami’s stars certainly had their cases, but the two winners did as well.

The Dolphins likely won’t have a candidate for Comeback Player of the Year next year, but they do have many who could win either Offensive or Defensive Player of the Year.

49ers RB Christian McCaffrey wins NFL Offensive Player of the Year

Christian McCaffrey is the Offensive Player of the Year!

49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has been named the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year. The award was announced Thursday night as part of the NFL Honors Ceremony.

It’s not a huge surprise McCaffrey won the award, which has become a de facto non-quarterback MVP award in an era where the MVP is almost exclusively a QB award. McCaffrey was also a top-five MVP finisher.

This season the 49ers star RB led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards. He was also the league leader in scrimmage yards (2,023) and touches (339), and tied for the league lead with 21 total touchdowns. McCaffrey was rewarded with a Pro Bowl trip, a First-Team All-Pro nod, an NFC Offensive Player of the Week award and two Offensive Player of the Month awards.

As good as quarterback Brock Purdy was this year, it was clear McCaffrey was San Francisco’s best offensive player, and his OPOY award is just a cherry on top of what was a sensational season.

Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill are finalists for 2023 AP awards

Tua and Tyreek up for some year-end awards.

The 2023 NFL season is nearly done, as there are just three games left of the postseason before a champion is crowned.

Before the representatives from the NFC and AFC take the field at Allegiant Stadium for this year’s Super Bowl, the league will announce the winners of the AP awards at the NFL Honors.

Two members of the Miami Dolphins are finalists for awards – quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for Comeback Player of the Year and Tyreek Hill for Offensive Player of the Year.

Tagovailoa returned to the Dolphins this season after his 2022 campaign was cut short due to multiple concussions that had many questioning whether or not the quarterback would continue playing the sport.

The 25-year-old responded with his best season to date, completing 69.3% of his passes (career-high), 29 touchdowns (career-high) and leading the league with 4,624 passing yards (career-high) all while leading his team to an 11-6 record and clinching a spot in the postseason.

Other candidates for the award include Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, Joe Flacco and Damar Hamlin.

Hill, before the season, projected that he would become the first wideout in NFL history to eclipse 2,000 receiving yards, breaking Calvin Johnson’s record set back in 2012. While Hill came up short, his numbers were still eye-popping, as he recorded 119 receptions (tying a franchise single-season record that he set in 2022) and led the league with 1,799 receiving yards (breaking a franchise single-season record that he set in 2022) and 13 touchdowns.

The Cheetah will be contending with Lamar Jackson, Christian McCaffrey, Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb for the award.

Winners for these awards and more will be announced on Feb. 8 during the NFL Honors.

4 Cowboys named as finalists for prestigious MVP, OPOY, DPOY awards

From @ToddBrock24f7: Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, Micah Parsons, and DaRon Bland are all up for end-of-year awards at NFL Honors on Feb. 8.

The team didn’t get very far with their postseason journey, but a handful of Cowboys players could still come home with personal end-of-year honors for their exemplary 2023 seasons.

The NFL has announced the finalists for this year’s Most Valuable Player, as well as the seven other major awards to be handed out at NFL Honors on Feb. 8.

The Cowboys are represented by four players in three different categories, with teammates competing against one another in two of those categories.

Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey both NFL MVP finalists

Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey are both MVP finalists. Other awards stuff here:

The 49ers have a few players and coaches among the top five finalists for the AP NFL post-season awards. Highlighting that group are quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Christian McCaffrey, both of whom are finalists for the AP NFL MVP award. McCaffrey is also an Offensive Player of the Year finalist, while head coach Kyle Shanahan is among the top five vote-getters for Coach of the Year according to the AP’s Josh Dubow.

While Purdy’s MVP case derailed some on Christmas night when he tossed four interceptions in a game where MVP favorite Lamar Jackson played exceedingly well, it’s noteworthy that he was still one of the top five in voting. There were cases made in media that he didn’t deserve credit for what San Francisco was doing, but he was always going to garner MVP attention for putting up 4,280 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 69.4 percent of his throws and averaging a league-high 9.6 yards per attempt. He was also the NFL’s highest-rated passer at 113.0. His MVP case is strong, but he’s not likely to win the award over Jackson.

McCaffrey because of his position was always more destined to be the NFL’s OPOY. It’s hard for a running back to win MVP, as illustrated by the fact no non-QB has won that award since 2012 when Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson took it home.

The 2023 campaign was as good a run as any non-QB has made at the award since that Peterson season. McCaffrey finished the season with the league lead in rushing yards (1,459), touches (339), yards from scrimmage (2,023) and total touchdowns (21). Had Jackson not had such a stellar end to the season, or had the Ravens not had the best record in the NFL, there’d be an extremely strong case for McCaffrey to be the league’s MVP.

Other MVP finalists included Jackson, Bills QB Josh Allen, and Cowboys QB Dak Prescott.

McCaffrey is much more likely in line to land his first Offensive Player of the Year honor. He’s among the top-five in voting for that award as well, and the OPOY has become the de facto non-QB MVP award. Jackson and Prescott are also finalists here, along with Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill and Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb. Given his consistent dominance all year and his place among the MVP finalists it would appear McCaffrey is the frontrunner to take this trophy home.

The final 49er represented among the AP NFL award finalists is head coach Kyle Shanahan, who is one of the five finalists for Coach of the Year. It’s hard to envision him winning because the criteria so often leans toward a coach doing more with less. Had Purdy not been as good or had the team dealt with high-profile injuries, then Shanahan might have had a better case. But he’s in the running with DeMeco Ryans from the Texans, Kevin Stefanski from the Browns, Dan Campbell from the Lions and John Harbaugh from the Ravens.

That’s not to say Shanahan did a poor job. He coached a team to the No. 1 seed while that group put up sensational offensive numbers. However, Ryans turned around a franchise, Stefanski’s club went 11-5 despite perhaps the worst QB situation in the league, and Campbell got Detroit to the playoffs. All of them are more likely to win than Shanahan, who oversaw a dominant effort from a top-flight roster that was already expected to be great.

That the 49ers have three finalists for these awards is a testament to how good they were this season, and underscores why they find themselves in the NFC championship game.

Winners of the AP NFL awards will be announced February 8 at the NFL Honors ceremony at 6:00pm Pacific Time.

NFL Award Predictions: Offensive Player of the Year

Touchdown Wire’s Natalie Miller continues her 2023 NFL predictions with five Offensive Player of the Year candidates.

With the season closing in on us at a rapid pace things in the NFL are becoming more and more clear as far as final rosters and depth charts. With those things out of the way it comes time for projections! In this series we will be going through each individual award and pick five players that we think have a great shot at bringing home the medal. Today we will be looking at the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award. He are our five picks.

Chiefs have a pair of finalists for NFL Honors

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was named a finalist for two awards, while DT Chris Jones was named a finalist for one.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a pair of big names up for awards at the NFL Honors ceremony, which takes place Feb. 9, the Thursday before Super Bowl LVII.

On Wednesday, finalists were announced for the NFL’s Most Valuable Player, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and other awards. Those players. As you can imagine, Kansas City had a few players named finalists in these end-of-year awards.

Patrick Mahomes was announced as a finalist for both the MVP and Offensive Player of the Year Award. This comes after a phenomenal 2022 campaign from Mahomes where he led the NFL with 5,250 passing yards and 41 touchdowns. After a near-unanimous AP First-Team All-Pro selection, Mahomes is considered the betting favorite for the MVP Award.

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts, Vikings WR Justin Jefferson, Bengals QB Joe Burrow and Bills QB Josh Allen were also named finalists for the MVP.  Hurts and Jefferson also were among the finalists for Offensive Player of the Year.

Chris Jones was announced as a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year Award alongside 49ers DE Nick Bosa and Cowboys LB Micah Parsons. Jones matched his career high of 15.5 sacks this season and established himself as the most dominant interior defensive lineman in the league this year.

The big surprise was not seeing Travis Kelce listed among the finalists for the Offensive Player of the Year Award. His 12 touchdown receptions were the second most by a receiver or tight end in the NFL season behind only Raiders WR Davante Adams.

Tyreek Hill named a finalist for 2022 Offensive Player of the Year

He joins another wide receiver and two quarterbacks.

With the NFL Honors just two weeks away, the Associated Press has begun announcing their finalists for the league awards.

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill is one of four finalists for the league’s 2022 AP Offensive Player of the Year. He joins Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

In 2022, Hill’s first season in aqua and orange, the 28-year-old recorded franchise records in both receptions (119) receptions and yards (1,710) while finding the end zone seven touchdowns in the receiving game.

His performance was strong enough to earn him his seventh straight Pro Bowl appearance and his fourth first-team All-Pro nomination.

The winner of the award will be announced during the NFL Honors on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 9:00 p.m. ET.

Raiders 2022 season awards: MVP, Rookie of the Year, Breakout player, more

Here are the #Raiders 2022 season awards including MVP, Rookie of the Year, Breakout player, and more.

There wasn’t a lot to crow about for the Raiders this season, but the awards must be given out, so that’s what I’m going to do.

Justin Jefferson named ProFootballTalk’s offensive player of the year

After a dominating season by wide receiver Justin Jefferson, the awards keep piling up

On Wednesday, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson was voted an All-Pro by the NFL Players Association and Pro Football Focus. Fast forward to Thursday, and Jefferson was named Pro Football Talk’s offensive player of the year for 2022.

These high honors come as no surprise, as Jefferson was a master of his craft on the football field this season and showed week in and week out why he’s the best receiver in football.

Jefferson finished the season leading the league in receptions (128) and yards (1809) along with eight total touchdowns. Jefferson will have a few more opportunities to notch awards this season as fans wait for the Associated Press to name their All-Pro team ass well as the NFL Honors which take place Thursday, February 9th, at 8 p.m. central on NBC. If the Vikings make the Super Bowl, there is a chance that Jefferson earns MVP just like Cooper Kupp did last season.
