Who will win MVP, defensive player of the year, and this year’s other NFL awards? Here are our votes

Let’s face it; Patrick Mahomes is gonna win MVP. What about the rest of the AP awards, like coach and rookies of the year?

The Associated Press (AP) released their finalists for its eight major regular season awards, including most valuable player, defensive player of the year and offensive/defensive player of the year. The nominees are roughly who you’d expect: a smattering a superstars who impacted the game across nearly five months of games to make their teams better.

While we already know who AP voters chose to fill up their All-Pro teams, we’ll have to wait until Super Bowl week to find out this year’s individual award winners. Those won’t go live until the league’s NFL Honors show in primetime February 9.

This, of course, doesn’t prevent us from speculating. We all pretty much know who this season’s MVP is going to be thanks to Patrick Mahomes’ stellar play and Jalen Hurts’ late-season injury. We’ve got a pretty good idea on the other awards, too. But there’s room for debate.

Let’s do that. Our picks prognosticators: Christian D’Andrea, Charles Curtis and Robert Zeglinski will once again steam into the breach to be kinda right about NFL stuff. Their predictions follow, but if you want Christian’s full Pro Football Writers Association ballot for their awards, you can find that here.

How does Eagles’ QB Jalen Hurts compare to other MVP candidates?

With the NFL season hitting its stretch run, we’re looking at how Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts compares to other MVP candidates like Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and Josh Allen

The NFL MVP race is heating up and the only thing we know for sure is that Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts is firmly in the mix for the award.

The reigning Player of the Week, Hurts was honored after his dominant performance against Green Bay last Sunday night, snagging his first career honor.

Hurts gained 157 yards on the ground against the Packers, Breaking Michael Vick’s single-game rushing record set against the Giants in December 2010.

The third-year quarterback also completed 16 of 28 passes for 153 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Eagles raised their record to 10-1 and Hurts became the third quarterback in NFL history – joining Vick and Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson – to run for 150-plus yards and throw for 150-plus yards in the same game and the first to do so while throwing a pair of touchdown passes.

Hurts was 29 of 39 passing for 380 yards and three touchdowns becoming the first Eagle to accomplish the feat since Michael Vick in 2010.

With the NFL experts undecided at this point, let’s break down and compare the current favorites.

Patrick Mahomes or Tua Tagovailoa? Debating the NFL MVP frontrunner after 10 weeks

Mahomes and Tagovailoa are 1-2 in the MVP betting odds. Is this Mahomes’ award to lose? Or do Tagovailoa’s sparkling stats give him an edge?

Two quarterbacks have stood above the fray when it comes to passing stats in 2022. According to sportsbooks, they also stand alone with it comes to this year’s NFL MVP Award odds.

Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, with the legacy of a past award and a Super Bowl trophy on his resume, currently stands as frontrunner with a +125 return on his MVP future. Miami Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa, a player whose future in south Florida was in question coming into the season, stands at +350. Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen are also in consideration, but neither have the short odds of the quarterbacks in charge of the AFC’s top two teams.

There are still eight weeks left in the 2022 NFL season, which leaves plenty of times for hot starts to fizzle and new contenders to emerge for the most prestigious regular season honor in the game. We don’t know what those final two months will hold, but we do know how we got here.

Looking back at that path, who should be 2022’s MVP?

NFL midseason awards: Who is 2022’s Most Valuable Player after 10 weeks?

Patrick Mahomes is the betting frontrunner, but he’s got plenty of competition when it comes to 2022’s NFL MVP.

The NFL MVP award is, for all intents and purposes, a quarterback’s award. It’s been nine years since anyone other than a passer was deemed the league’s Most Valuable Player. With passing offenses more important than ever, it would take a superhuman performance from a running back or wide receiver or pass rusher to sway voters to their side.

That narrows down 2022’s candidate list. While Tyreek Hill and Justin Jefferson have both been great, it’s a longshot either would be able to rage their way into serious consideration for the award while a handful of quarterbacks are absolutely cooking behind center. This fall has been the backdrop to some notable fades — Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott foremost among them — but the league’s best teams have been powered by high octane aerial attacks.

Knowing that, we can narrow this year’s field down to a handful of quarterbacks who’ve been difference makers for teams in contention. After 10 weeks, here’s how the MVP race is shaping up in my eyes.

Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence a long-shot for next year’s MVP

Lawrence’s +8000 odds are the best among second-year quarterbacks.

It was far from an MVP caliber season for Trevor Lawrence during his rookie campaign in Jacksonville. He threw nearly twice as many interceptions (17) as touchdowns (nine) with a completion percentage below 60%.

Lawrence flashed moments of brilliance, but he was held back by scheme issues and poor receiver play (in addition to some mistakes from himself). There’s a lot of hope that he’s poised for a Year 2 jump, but Vegas doesn’t seem very confident.

In the latest futures odds for the 2022 NFL MVP, Lawrence sits at just +8000, per Tipico Sportsbook, giving him the 22nd-best odds among the league’s quarterbacks. However, per these odds, Lawrence has the best chances of any second-year quarterback.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen currently has the best odds to win the MVP award at +500, followed closely by Patrick Mahomes (+600) and Aaron Rodgers (+700).

It will certainly take quite a leap in terms of quality of play from Lawrence to even be in the discussion for MVP in Year 2, but we saw that kind of leap from Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who led his team to the Super Bowl this season. Jacksonville will hope Lawrence can follow a similar trajectory.
