Dolphins leave 2024 NFL Honors empty-handed

Two of Miami’s stars lost the votes for awards during the NFL Honors.

The wait is finally over, as the 2023 NFL season is about to wrap up with a Super Bowl battle between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.

On Thursday, the league handed out their annual awards at their NFL Honors show, and two Miami Dolphins were up for some hardware – Tyreek Hill for Offensive Player of the Year and Tua Tagovailoa for Comeback Player of the Year.

Hill appeared in 16 games, leading the league in receiving yards (1,799) and touchdowns (13) on 119 receptions. He set new franchise single-season records in receiving yards in 2023 after doing the same the year prior.

Tagovailoa dealt with some serious concussion issues in 2022 that kept him off the field for a significant portion of the season, including the team’s first playoff game since 2016. He bounced back with an impressive campaign that saw him play in all 17 regular-season games and lead the league in passing yards with a career-high 4,624. He also set career highs in completion percentage (69.3%) and touchdowns (29).

Despite their incredible seasons, neither Dolphin took home their respective trophies, as Christian McCaffrey was named the Offensive Player of the Year and Joe Flacco won Comeback Player of the Year.

Miami’s stars certainly had their cases, but the two winners did as well.

The Dolphins likely won’t have a candidate for Comeback Player of the Year next year, but they do have many who could win either Offensive or Defensive Player of the Year.

Baker Mayfield finishes third in AP Comeback Player of the Year voting

Mayfield was beat out by Buffalo’s Damar Hamlin and the winner of the award in Cleveland’s Joe Flacco.

Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield may have won FOX’s fan-voted Comeback Player of the Year award, but the Associated Press award was not to be.

Mayfield was up for contention with a number of players for the award, but he lost out when it was revealed at the 2024 NFL Honors ceremony. Mayfield placed third in voting for the AP Comeback Player of the Year award, coming in behind Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin and the winner of the award in Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco.

Mayfield had 10 total first-place votes, 10 second-place votes and 13 third-place votes through the ranked-choice voting that the AP now conducts for seasonal awards. Interestingly enough, Hamlin had by far the most first-place votes with 21, but Flacco’s 26 second-place votes were enough put him over the top as the winner of the award.

As safety Antoine Winfield Jr. did not win the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, no Buccaneers players came away with any awards on Thursday night.

Baker Mayfield wins NFL on Fox Comeback Player of the Year award

The Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year award, which Mayfield is nominated for, will be revealed at the NFL Honors on Thursday.

The Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year award won’t be revealed until Thursday, but Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback [autotag]Baker Mayfield[/autotag] took home honors as the top comeback player from a different source on Wednesday.

NFL on Fox had its own voting for the NFL’s yearly awards, and Mayfield won Comeback Player of the Year. That award is based on a fan vote; the AP award is voted on by sports journalists around the nation.

Mayfield will face off against Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, Los Angeles Rams QB Matthew Stafford and Cleveland Browns QB Joe Flacco for the AP award.

Mayfield’s efforts for the Bucs were remarkable coming off a rough season with both the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Rams in 2022. Not only did he throw for 28 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions, but he threw six touchdown passes to three picks in Tampa Bay’s playoff run. Mayfield seemed to have clicked with the Bucs in 2023, and whether he returns to the team will depend on how much money Tampa Bay is willing to give him in free agency.

Bills’ Damar Hamlin wins PFWA Comeback Player of the Year

#Bills’ Damar Hamlin wins PFWA Comeback Player of the Year:

13 months ago, Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field during the Buffalo Bills’ matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest after making a tackle in the Week 17 game.. He was administered CPR before being rushed to a local Cincinnati hospital.

Hamlin recovered and played in his first game since the medical incident in the Bills preseason outing against the Indianapolis Colts. He made the 53 man squad after preseason and made his debut in an AFC East divisional showdown against the Miami Dolphins, who were fighting to also win the division.

Hamlin has received a top honor for his impressive return to high-level football. Hamlin was awarded the Professional Football Writers of America’s Comeback Player of the Year:

In the 2023 season, Hamlin played five games. While the box score isn’t as impactful as it may seem, the fact that Hamlin narrowly escaped death to compete and earn a spot in the Bills team was very impressive.

According to bettors, once Hamlin made the 53-man roster he was a heavy favorite to win all season long. We will see after the culmination of the season whether he also wins the prestigious NFL Comeback Player of the Year as voted by the Associated Press. Last season’s winner Geno Smith won both awards.

Dolphins Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill are finalists for 2023 AP awards

Tua and Tyreek up for some year-end awards.

The 2023 NFL season is nearly done, as there are just three games left of the postseason before a champion is crowned.

Before the representatives from the NFC and AFC take the field at Allegiant Stadium for this year’s Super Bowl, the league will announce the winners of the AP awards at the NFL Honors.

Two members of the Miami Dolphins are finalists for awards – quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for Comeback Player of the Year and Tyreek Hill for Offensive Player of the Year.

Tagovailoa returned to the Dolphins this season after his 2022 campaign was cut short due to multiple concussions that had many questioning whether or not the quarterback would continue playing the sport.

The 25-year-old responded with his best season to date, completing 69.3% of his passes (career-high), 29 touchdowns (career-high) and leading the league with 4,624 passing yards (career-high) all while leading his team to an 11-6 record and clinching a spot in the postseason.

Other candidates for the award include Baker Mayfield, Matthew Stafford, Joe Flacco and Damar Hamlin.

Hill, before the season, projected that he would become the first wideout in NFL history to eclipse 2,000 receiving yards, breaking Calvin Johnson’s record set back in 2012. While Hill came up short, his numbers were still eye-popping, as he recorded 119 receptions (tying a franchise single-season record that he set in 2022) and led the league with 1,799 receiving yards (breaking a franchise single-season record that he set in 2022) and 13 touchdowns.

The Cheetah will be contending with Lamar Jackson, Christian McCaffrey, Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb for the award.

Winners for these awards and more will be announced on Feb. 8 during the NFL Honors.

Rams QB Matthew Stafford named as finalist for prestigious award

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford nominated for prestigious award after a strong 2023 NFL season

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is a contender to win the AP Comeback Player of the Year award. Stafford, who was the first pick in the 2009 NFL draft, played college football at Georgia from 2006-2008.

Matthew Stafford showed toughness and grit throughout this NFL season and especially in the wild-card round against the Detroit Lions. Stafford returned to form after struggling through injuries in 2022. Stafford threw for 10 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and 2,087 passing yards in 2022, which was one of the worst seasons of his career. Stafford and the Rams were off the mark in 2022 after winning the Super Bowl the previous season.

This year, Matthew Stafford bounced back and threw for 3,965 yards and 24 touchdowns. Stafford helped Los Angeles make the NFL playoffs and was selected to the Pro Bowl after an outstanding 2023 season.

Stafford is one of five nominees to win the AP Comeback Player of the Year award. He joins Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield.

The NFL Honors take place on Feb. 8 at 9:00 p.m. ET in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Greg Schiano on Rutgers linebacker Mo Toure’s comeback season: ‘Gifted alone doesn’t get you to where he is’

Mo Toure made the watch list for the Comeback Player of the Year Award.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers football’s Mo Toure made the watch list for the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year. It is deserving recognition for Toure, who hasn’t missed a beat in his return to the field.

Toure missed all of last season with an injury suffered in spring practice. Wednesday’s announcement sees him now making the watch list for the 2023 Comeback Player of the Year.

The list is compiled and released by College Sports Communicators in association with The Associated Press and the Fiesta Bowl Organization.

On the season, Toure has 38 total tackles, putting him well on track to better his career-high of 51 tackles which he set in 2021. Toure also has 1.5 sacks and a pass defended this season.

“Well, number one – his incredible work ethic. To come back from the injury and the way that he prepared even when he wasn’t playing,” Schiano said on Wednesday.

“This guy was in the building, he had the big screen and he’s doing his run fits off of endzone copies. And I mean there was nothing that guy – he has an incredible capacity to work. And because of that, I believe that’s why he’s having the success he is.

“Yes, he’s gifted, but gifted alone. doesn’t get you to where he is. He’s working really hard.”

Last year, Mohamed Ibrahim (Minnesota) was one of three winners of the comeback award.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith wins AP’s NFL Comeback Player of the Year

After his first year as the starting quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks, Geno Smith won the Associated Press Comeback Player of the Year.

Although the Seattle Seahawks didn’t make it deep into the playoffs following the 2022 season, starting quarterback Geno Smith received top honors for his impressive campaign.

On Thursday night during the 12th annual NFL Honors, Smith was awarded the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year by the Associated Press.

In his first year replacing Russell Wilson, Smith finished the regular season completing 399 of 572 passes attempted for 4282 yards, 30 touchdowns and a passer rating of 100.9.

Two other Seahawks were in contention for awards Thursday night but did not come away in the top spots. Running back Kenneth Walker III finished second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting and cornerback Tariq Woolen landed at third place for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Smith wasn’t present in person to accept his trophy, but local product Joel McHale subbed in nicely.
