Former Texas QB Sam Ehlinger projected to make Colts’ 53-man roster

Giants reduce roster to 80 players

The New York Giants reduced their roster to the mandatory 80 players on Tuesday afternoon.

The New York Giants trimmed their roster down to the mandatory 80 players on Tuesday first by placing tight end Rysen John and defensive back Quincy Wilson on injured reserve and then later in the day releasing backup long snapper Carson Tinker and waiving two injured players – defensive back Montre Hartage (shoulder) and Cole Hikutini (hip).

John and Wilson, by being placed on injured reserve before the 53-man roster has been finalized, will not be eligible to return this season. Both suffered ankle injuries in the Giants’ 17-13 preseason loss last Sunday to the Browns in Cleveland.

The remaining 80-man roster does not include running back Sandro Platzgummer, who the team gets an exemption for as a part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program.

The Giants will now head to New England this week for back-to-back joint practices with the Patriots on Wednesday and Thursday before returning home to face the Pats in their final preseason game on Sunday night.

Final roster cuts are due next Tuesday, August 31, at 4:00pm Eastern.

Former Texas WR Brennan Eagles cut by the Dallas Cowboys

Brennan Eagles was a part of the first round of cuts for the Dallas Cowboys.

Arguably the worst part of sports is the business side of things which unfortunately former Longhorn receiver Brennan Eagles experienced on Tuesday after being cut by the Dallas Cowboys.

Eagles, who decided to forgo his senior season, was a very productive receiver during his time as a Longhorn. After playing in just one game his freshman year where he registered one catch, Eagles burst onto the seen as a sophomore.

During his sophomore season, the 6-foot-4 playmaker was tied for second in receieving touchdowns with six, and third on the team in yards behind two other Longhorns currently in the NFL, Collin Johnson and Devin Duvernay. He would go on to continue that success during his junior season, as he was second on the team in catches, second in receieving yards, and second in touchdowns.

Eagles showed promise, and likely could have benefited from using his last year of college eligibility, but decided to test the draft waters. He would eventually go undrafted in the 2021 NFL draft, but would be signed as undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys. There were not many opportunities to begin with for Eagles on the Cowboys, as they are very deep at the wide receiver position, and in his lone preseason game, Eagles did not register a catch.

It was announced via Twitter on Tuesday that Eagles was among the Cowboys’ first cuts that saw the roster go from 90 to 85.

Eagles very well might get picked up in the future by another team as a practice squad member, or fill in for an injured player.

Two former Badgers waived by the Carolina Panthers

Normally right now the nation would be watching preseason NFL games and following how roster long-shots perform in their on-field opportunities, trying to project whether the players will the 53-man roster.

Now, without preseason games, the cuts still need to happen–this time, though, only based on what coaches saw during OTAs and training camp.

After two former Badgers–Dare Ogunbowale and Nick Nelson–were recently released by their NFL teams two more have joined the list: now-former Carolina Panthers Natrell Jamerson and Chris Orr.

Jamerson’s NFL path since the Saints took him in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft has been a windy one, bouncing from the Saints, to the Texans, to the Packers and then to the Panthers in a span of only two seasons.

His best season of production was the 2018 season during which he played in a combined 12 games for two different teams and recorded 10 tackles and one pass defended.

Orr, on the other hand, was recently signed by the Panthers after the 2020 NFL Draft after absolutely dominating during his senior season in Madison.

The path towards making a roster as a late-round pick or undrafted free agent is undoubtably more challenging this year without the opportunity of preseason games and an overall shortened offseason.

The two players will now be placed on waivers and other teams will get a shot to land them before they become free agents. The most likely result of the process for both Jamerson and Orr is a spot on the Panthers’ practice squad where they’ll await another shot at the 53-man roster.

Cowboys News: Gregory back, Lee to IR, roster cuts, new podcast

The Cowboys made a number of cuts the day before the rosters are due, visited with a former Cowboy, and placed two players on the IR.

The final deadline for roster cuts in the NFL is less than 24 hours away. The Cowboys have already begun trimming their team down to the necessary limit, as they cut another four players Friday. But just because it’s time to consolidate the roster, doesn’t mean the Cowboys aren’t looking to improve the squad.

Randy Gregory was finally reinstated, and he should give the defense a boost when he returns mid-season. The Cowboys clearly would like to augment their young defensive backfield, and the team even brought in former Cowboy Brandon Carr for a visit Friday. Carr’s recent teammate in Baltimore, Earl Thomas, may or may not have a meeting this weekend with Dallas. Jourdan Lewis could begin the season on the IR, even furthuring the need for help in the secondary, and Sean Lee’s placement on the IR should feel too much like deja vu for Dallas fans.

Devin Smith headlines first wave of Cowboys roster cuts

The Cowboys have begun their final roster cuts, as Adam Redmond, Devin Smith, and Clayton Thorson were released Wednesday.

The final date for NFL teams to trim their rosters down to 53 men is this Saturday, September 5 at 3:00 p.m. Central Time. The Dallas Cowboys have already begun making the hard decisions and thinning out the squad, as they released seven players Wednesday.

All of the cuts came on the offensive side of the ball. The 24-hour rule is not in effect for waiver regulations when it comes to final roster cuts. All players released over the next few days will clear waivers on Sunday and will then be eligible for the revised practice squad rules. In 2020, teams can have 16-man practice squads. Two players per week can be promoted to the active roster, four players per week can be protected from other teams poaching and up to six players with unlimited accrued seasons (veterans) can be on the squad.

Devin Smith

Perhaps the most notable of the releases is Smith. The former Buckeye appeared in the first four games of the 2019 season for the Cowboys, andeven caught a 51-yard touchdown from Dak Prescott in week 2 against division rivals Washington.

This minor success a year ago led many to believe Smith would have a roster spot as either the fourth or fifth wide receiver, but players like Cedrick Wilson and Noah Brown had excellent training camp performances and left Smith as the odd man out.

Adam Redmond

Despite appearing in 10 games two seasons ago, the Cowboys didn’t have room for a third center in Redmond. Redmond is another player who had appeared on some final roster projections, but his release shows the confidence the Cowboys have in Joe Looney, Tyler Biadasz, and even Connor McGovern should Dallas need an emergency backup at the position. The Harvard graduate is another strong candidate for the practice squad.

Clayton Thorson

The least surprising of the three Wednesday cuts is Thorson. Thorson never made it pas the Cowboys practice squad in his lone year in Dallas. Dak Prescott and Andy Dalton are set in stone at the position. Rookie Ben DiNucci is now in line to be the third Cowboys quarterback should they choose to keep that many.

According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the club also released offensive tackles Pace Murphy, Mitch Hyatt and Wyatt Miller – the latter two waived injured. The team also parted with UDFA Charlie Taumoepeau.
