Top ten Ohio State wide receivers over the last ten years

Who’d we miss? Who do you think should be No. 1? #GoBucks

We have started a new series here at Buckeyes Wire of ranking the top players at each position for Ohio State over the last 10 years. Up next: wide receivers.

No program in college football has had as much talent at wide receiver in recent memory as Ohio State. This is evidenced by the fact that this list is being expanded from a top five to a top ten list.

The list includes wide receivers who lasted played for Ohio State in the 2013 season or later. Many of these players have gone on to become stars at the NFL level, but this list is based on what they did for the Buckeyes.

This was a difficult ranking to produce as there are many wide receivers deserving of praise, but here’s how it all shook out.

Devin Smith inducted into Hall of Fame

Devin Smith inducted into Hall of Fame #GoBucks

Devin Smith is one of the greatest wide receivers in Ohio State history and before he got to Columbus, Smith was one of the greatest to ever suit up for Massillon Washington High School and is now being recognized for his on-field achievements.

Smith was a three-sport athlete competing in basketball, football, and track. Every Buckeye fan remembers Smith’s blazing speed so the fact that he won state in the 100-meter dash in 2011 should surprise no one. Smith also won state in the long jump.

On the gridiron, Smith was able to earn All-Ohio twice, accumulating 110 career receptions for 2,119 yards and 24 touchdowns. Smith was a consensus three-star recruit that was destined to play at Ohio State and will join other former Buckeyes in Paul Brown, Earle Bruce, Devin Jordan, Chris Spielman, and Justin Zwick in the Tiger Football Hall of Fame.

It will only be a matter of time for Smith to get similar honors at Ohio State as his career was extremely impressive with 121 career receptions for 2,503 yards and 30 touchdowns. Smith was All-Big Ten honorable mention and started three seasons and was integral in the National Championship victory.

Notre Dame football extends an offer to 2024 Georgia linebacker

The Irish are looking for another impact ‘backer in 2024

[autotag]Notre Dame [/autotag] has a great tradition at linebacker and they continue to have game changers at the position. It most likely isn’t changing soon, especially given the talent on the current roster and who they are recruiting for the future.

One of those players is potentially 2024 Georgia linebacker [autotag]Devin Smith[/autotag]. The 6-foot, 3-inch and 225 pound ‘backer was offered a scholarship by the Irish.

Although Smith has yet to receive a ranking by the 247Sports composite, it is just a matter of time before that happens. He currently holds a bevy of offers from schools like Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Texas A&M and others.

LSU offers 2024 three-star linebacker from Georgia

Devin Smith primarily projects as an edge rusher at the next level.

[autotag]Devin Smith[/autotag] is a 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker from the class of 2024. He is from Brunswick, Georgia, where he plays for Brunswick High School. The Brunswick Pirates finished the 2022 season 10-1 with an overtime loss to Houston County in the first round of the GHSA 6A playoffs.

LSU’s 2024 recruiting class is currently ranked as the No. 2 class in the country and it includes two linebackers so far. ([autotag]Maurice Williams Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Xavier Atkins[/autotag]) The Tigers are running thin depth-wise at linebacker, so Smith would be a great addition.

Film Analysis: Smith lines up as an outside linebacker in the Pirates 3-4 set and uses his speed off the edge to disrupt plays in the backfield.

Auburn offers 2024 linebacker out of Georgia

Auburn has offered more linebackers in the 2024 class than any other position.

Coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] is already on the recruiting trail for 2024.

Linebacker recruit Devin Smith announced on Twitter on Friday that the Tigers have given him an offer for the 2024 class. Because the class is so far out, Smith hasn’t been assigned a rating by 247Sports.

Smith has 12 offers, a considerable number for a recruit so far out in the cycle. He has three other offers from SEC schools: Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina. So far, only two schools from his home state of Georgia have offered him: Georgia Southern and Georgia State.

Auburn has two recruits for the 2024 class: quarterback Adrian Posse and cornerback A’Mon Lane. The team has particularly focused on the linebacker position for recruiting, though, as the Tigers have offered 23 for the 2024 class — more than any other position thus far. The Tigers hope to make Smith a part of their roster when the class comes around.

#FortniteGame Tournament features eight former Ohio State stars #OvMFortnite #GoBucks

This Sunday, streaming superstar and Michigan football fanatic, NICKMERCS has partnered with Columbus’ own, eFuse and Epic Games to host one of the most exciting Fortnite tournaments in history and the first tournament to feature both current and former Ohio State and Michigan football players for up to $55,000 in prizes.

“Gaming deserves a place in rivalries as grand as this,” said Matthew Benson, CEO of eFuse. “Alongside our partners are Epic Games, we’re going big with a tournament featuring the rivalry’s biggest names, putting real money on the line and broadcasting this out to millions of viewers. Our proprietary platform was built exactly for major moments like this and we can’t wait to see how the gaming community responds.”

“Football and gaming have long been synonymous,” said Zach Beebe, Founder of NIL Management, a management and consulting agency supporting college football’s top stars. “The Rivalry Week Fortnite tournament is celebrating the past while looking to the future and building new traditions within gaming and modern entertainment. Our collegiate clients are super excited and can’t wait to battle. This series will be one for the history books!”

It gives me chills to think of this rivalry extending to yet another arena and my mouth dropped when Team Ohio State was announced. There will be 16 players on the roster, with eight being former stars and eight being current ones. To get you ready if you’re into this sort of thing (and you should be) here are eight former Buckeye stars jumping on the sticks to defend the great state of Ohio.

The tournament will air Sunday, November 20, at 7 p.m. ET on NICKMERCS’s MFAM Gauntlet Twitch channel: twitch.tv/mfamgauntlet.

Five former Ohio State players who may be selected in the USFL Draft

Five former Ohio State players who may be selected in the USFL draft #GoBucks #USFL

The United States Football League is back and I have never been more excited. If you are not familiar with the greatness that was the USFL, please take a second to dive into the history. The USFL has had some exciting talent in its former glory including Steve Young, Herschel Walker, and Reggie White. They all shined before heading to the NFL, but like most leagues, they could not compete with the financial juggernaut that is the NFL.

If you are curious which former Ohio State players shined in the original version of the league, have no fear that information is here. Now, it is highly unlikely that this league will be as successful as the original based purely on the money available, but hey I have no problem watching any kind of football year-round. The following are five former Buckeyes that could hear their name called during the USFL draft.

Panthers signing WR Devin Smith to practice squad

The Panthers will be adding former second-round pick Devin Smith to its practice squad.

On Wednesday morning, we learned the Carolina Panthers won’t be trading for a certain quarterback, at least any time soon. They will, though, be adding a new pass catcher into the fold.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers will be signing wideout Devin Smith to its practice squad.

Smith was drafted by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2015 draft out of the Ohio State University. The former Buckeye had himself a standout college career, amassing 2,503 receiving yards and 30 touchdowns over his four years in Columbus.

His professional career, however, has yet to catch up to his billing. The 6-foot-1, 199-pound speedster has totaled just 248 yards and a pair of scores in his 22 NFL games.

In addition to his brief time with the Jets, Smith has now recorded stints with the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, New England Patriots and, most recently, the Jacksonville Jaguars. He did appear in the 2021 season opener against Houston, where he registered one target over nine offensive snaps.

Jags elevate DB Brandon Rusnak, WR Devin Smith from practice squad for Week 1 game vs. Texans

As expected, the Jags called on some help from their practice squad for Week 1’s game.

As they will do often throughout the season, the Jacksonville Jaguars elevated a pair of players from their practice squad heading into Week 1’s game against the Houston Texans. Those players were defensive back Brandon Rusnak and receiver Devin Smith.

The decision to call up Rusnak was the one that was the most expected as the Jags are down one cornerback in Tre Herndon. Herndon sprained his MCL in the first game of the preseason against the Cleveland Browns and was ruled out on Friday.

As for Smith, he’s a familiar player to Jags coach Urban Meyer, who also coached him in college at Ohio State. He’s entering his seventh season in the NFL and could help the Jags as a speed threat down the field as their sixth receiver and on special teams.

Kickoff for the Jags and Texans game will take place at 1 p.m. EST at NRG Stadium and all the information needed to tune in can be found here.
