PFF predicts the perfect 1st-round for Eagles in the 2022 NFL Draft

PFF predicts the perfect 1st-round for the Philadelphia Eagles and every other team with multiple first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft

The Eagles have one of the top front offices in all of football, but the one handicap that could eventually sink Howie Roseman is his alleged inability to properly evaluate NFL draft talent.

Philadelphia’s retooling and recent struggles can be attributed to Roseman’s 2019 and 2020 draft class that outside of Miles Sanders and Jalen Hurts, lacks any true star power and upper-echelon talent.

The Eagles passing on DK Metcalf (Arcega-Whiteside) and Justin Jefferson (Reagor) has stunted the growth of the Philadelphia passing game while forcing the teams’ general manager to potentially draft a wide receiver in three straight first rounds.

April’s NFL draft also offers an intriguing scenario with seven teams owning multiple first-round picks, the first time that’s happened in 40-years.

It’ll offer the opportunity for those teams to dictate the pace of the draft and PFF recently looked at the perfect first-round for all seven teams.

For Philadelphia, it was three talented defenders who could turn Jonathan Gannon’s defense into one of the NFL’s best.

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
Pick No. 15: DI Devonte Wyatt, Georgia
Pick No. 16: LB Devin Lloyd, Utah
Pick No. 19: EDGE George Karlaftis, Purdue

Lloyd is a three-down, versatile linebacker who plays faster than his 4.66-second time in the 40-yard dash suggests, while Wyatt is a game-wrecking defensive tackle who can also slide down to the defensive end.

Karlaftis is a powerful pass rusher in the mode of Ryan Kerrigan and would provide Philadelphia’s defensive line with another capable of creating immense defensive pressure.

NFL Draft: Should the Eagles trade up for top pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux?

NFL Draft: Should the Philadelphia Eagles trade up for top pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux?

The NFL and the AFC West are filled with top-flight passing offenses, but the Rams showed that an elite pass rush can somewhat neutralize the newest craze around the league.

Philadelphia re-signed Derek Barnett and added Haason Reddick via free agency, but could Howie Roseman’s biggest move be a trade-up scenario that lands former Oregon All-American defensive end, Kayvon Thibodeaux?

Thibodeaux is viewed as one of the most talented players in the 2022 NFL Draft. A 6-foot-5 edge rusher with charisma and outstanding athleticism, but he reportedly could slip in the draft due to concerns about his motor.

Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline wrote that there is a belief from scouts and evaluators at the NFL Combine that Thibodeaux “doesn’t play with the same fire as some other top prospects.” The issues with his motor are seemingly backed up by people affiliated with the Ducks’ football program, who said that the talented pass rusher “gave up on plays too easily.”

After suffering an ankle injury in Oregon’s season opener, Thibodeaux logged 49 total tackles, 7 sacks and 1 pass defended in 10 games during the 2021 season.

Once considered a player worthy of the number one pick, Thibodeaux could now fall according to ESPN, with players like Alabama’s Evan Neal, Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson, and Notre Dame’s Kyle Hamilton flying up draft boards across the NFL.

Looking at the draft order, if the Seahawks (No. 9) and Jets (No. 10) don’t select Thibodeaux, he could slide further, as Washington, Minnesota, Houston, and Baltimore are not expected to select pass-rushers at picks Nos. 11-14. A lot can change once the draft starts and panic sets in, but one month out it’s not unrealistic to think Thibodeaux could be on the board for the Eagles at No. 15.
Thibodeaux’s 19 total tackles over his Oregon career now have some questioning his production as well.

If the former All-American starts to fall, it could provide a unique opportunity to further improve the Philadelphia pass rush.

The Eagles will have Brandon Graham in 2022 along with Derek Barnett, Josh Sweat, and Milton Williams, but a top-flight, talented rookie could take Jonathan Gannon’s defense to the next level.

Thibodeaux would instantly enter the Eagles’ top-four edge rotation and he’d still complement Haason Reddick who can rush from three different positions.

Which one of the top cornerbacks in the 2022 NFL draft fits the Eagles scheme?

Looking at which one of the top cornerbacks in the 2022 NFL draft fits the Philadelphia Eagles scheme

The Eagles are likely to add a cornerback in the NFL draft and the April’s selection offers an opportunity for Philadelphia to land one of several top-flight prospects with three first-round picks.

Touchdown Wire’s Laurie Fitzpatrick recently evaluated three of the top cornerback prospects on the board based on the defensive schemes that best fit their skill sets.

There are about four or five first-round worth cornerbacks that’ll be on the board, and Fitzpatrick took a deep look at LSU’s Derek Stingley, Cincinnati’s Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner, and Washington’s Trent McDuffie based on their ability to play zone, man and match coverage.

All three could be off the board by the 15th and 16th picks, and the Eagles still want to land a cornerback in round one, the player that fits Philadelphia the best could end up being Clemson’s, Andrew Booth.

Jonathan Gannon likes to play a certain way in the secondary and Booth has significant exposure to a zone-heavy scheme at Clemson.

Booth Jr. recently underwent surgery for a sports hernia, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, with the surgery being performed by Dr. Williams Meyers in Philadelphia.

Schefter noted that Booth is still expected to be ready for the start of NFL training camp.

Adding a player like Booth or McDuffie with Darius Slay and Avonte Maddox would give the Eagles one of the better cornerback rooms in the NFC.
