Golfweek’s Best 2022: Top public and private courses in New Mexico

Paako Ridge leads the ranking of Golfweek’s Best public-access golf courses in Nevada.

Paako Ridge, designed by Ken Dye in 2000 and expanded to 27 holes in 2005, is the top-rated Golfweek’s Best public-access golf course in New Mexico, providing players a perfect opportunity to blast long drives across a high desert layout.

That’s a good thing, because even though Paako Ridge is situated in thin air at 6,500 feet of elevation, the main 18-hole layout can be stretched to 7,562 yards. And besides being No. 1 in the state, Paako Ridge ties for No. 126 for all modern courses built in the U.S. since 1960.

Golfweek’s Best offers many lists of course rankings, with that of top public-access courses in each state among the most popular. All the courses on this list allow public access in some fashion, be it standard daily green fees, through a resort or by staying at an affiliated hotel. If there’s a will, there’s a tee time.

Also popular are the Golfweek’s Best rankings of top private courses in each state, and that list for New Mexico’s private offerings is likewise included below.

MORE: Best Modern | Best Classic | Top 200 Resort | Top 200 Residential | Top 100 Best You Can Play

(m): Modern course, built in or after 1960
(c): Classic course, built before 1960

Note: If there is a number in the parenthesis with the m or c, that indicates where that course ranks among Golfweek’s Best top 200 modern or classic courses.

Fresno State vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why Fresno State Will Win

The Bulldogs got their groove back.

On a four game losing streak with nothing working quite right and without a win over an FBS team, the defense rose up against the run and QB Logan Fife came through in a 17-10 win over a red hot San Jose State.

This week it’s about the defense against a New Mexico offense that’s miserable on third downs, doesn’t do anything from the passing game, and averages just 261 yards per game.

Score 14 points and that might be enough to get this done.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why New Mexico Will Win

It’s not like the Fresno State offense went off against San Jose State.

With QB Jake Haener still hurting, Fife is expected to get the call. While he came through against San Jose State, he has just one touchdown pass with five picks.

The Bulldog offensive line is struggling, the defense doesn’t force takeaways, and the Lobo defense is just good enough to keep the score low and hang around.

However …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Fresno State came up with its first four takeaways of the year over the last three weeks, but New Mexico failed to generate a turnover in either of the last two games.

Don’t expect a lot of points or excitement, but it’ll be close and tight late. Fresno State will still struggle offensively, but two takeaways from the defense will save the day.

New Mexico vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

The defense is playing well enough to keep the New Mexico State offense from doing much of anything.

The Lobos might not have a brick wall up front, but they’re great at getting to the quarterback at forcing takeaways. Biggest of all, they can stop the run.

New Mexico State hasn’t thrown for 140 yards since the opener against Nevada, and the running game that worked so well against Hawaii a few weeks ago didn’t work against a miserable FIU D.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why New Mexico State Will Win

It’s not like New Mexico’s offense is humming.

It hasn’t pushed past 170 yards so far, it hasn’t hit 200 rushing yards against an FBS team, and overall it’s averaging just 260 yards per game. The big problem is a line that can’t keep defenses out of the backfield and isn’t generating enough of a push for the ground game.

The Lobos also have a turnover problem with five in the last two games and multiple giveaways in four of the six games. However …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico State doesn’t force enough mistakes to overcome the other problems.

Weird things sometimes happen in this in-state rivalry, but New Mexico has won three straight, the defense will be far better, and it’ll come up with a wee bit more offensive balance.

Points will be at a premium. Neither side can hit field goals, but New Mexico will get a few in the second half to get comfortable.

Wyoming vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

These aren’t the Lobos of the last few years. They’re 2-3, but the defense is playing well, there’s a good ground game, and there are signs things are starting to turn.

The D is among the best in the country on third downs, the turnovers and takeaways are piling up – the Lobos are sixth in the nation in takeaways – and it all needs to come together against a wildly inconsistent Wyoming team that’s struggling way too much lately with the passing game.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Wyoming Will Win

The Wyoming offensive line is playing well. It’s doing a good job in pass protection, the running game is effective – even if the big yards aren’t there – and the main defensive problems are against decent passers.

New Mexico doesn’t really throw the ball.

The Lobo offensive line isn’t anything great, the offense is among the worst in the nation averaging 248 yards per game, and as long as turnovers aren’t an issue, Wyoming shouldn’t have a problem.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Cowboys turned it over three times in the opener against Illinois and just three times in the five games since. They’re not going to take any big chances here.

They’re going to get running from the start, the defense should get into the backfield enough to be disruptive, and the losing run will stop now with a solid, low scoring win.

UNLV vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

Start with this – the Lobos are scoring a bit.

They couldn’t do it in the loss to LSU last week, but compared to last year when there was no offense at all as the season went on, at least the attack put up some points over the first three games including a 27-10 win over a UTEP team that stunned Boise State.

The big mistakes aren’t there with just four turnovers on the year – oddly enough, they came in the two wins and there weren’t any giveaways in the two loss – and the defensive front is just disruptive enough to matter.

There’s a pass rush, and it’s going to be a pain against a UNLV offensive line that allows way too many plays in the backfield.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why UNLV Will Win

The Rebels are playing really, really well.

New Mexico might not be screwing up, but UNLV is really limiting the mistakes with just one lonely interception against Cal as the only turnover so far.

There’s a steady passing game with QB Doug Brumfield doing a nice job of keeping the O moving – he’s taking the throws that are there – and the running game is working just enough to carry its share of the weight. It might not be consistent, but it’s not bad.

The offense has been a pleasant surprise, and the defense has been a total stunner.

The run defense leads the Mountain West, it’s allowing under three yards per carry, and …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Oh yeah, and that improved New Mexico offense … it’s the second-worst in American in yards per game.

The Lobos aren’t going to be able to run a lick, but the defense will do just enough to keep the somewhat balanced Rebel attack from going off.

Brumfield won’t light up the New Mexico secondary, but he’ll be good enough. Just a few scoring drives in the first half will get this done.

LSU safety Major Burns to miss the next 3-6 weeks with a neck injury

Burns missed Saturday night’s game and likely won’t be unavailable for a decent portion of SEC play.

The Tigers were without one of their top defensive players in Saturday night’s 38-0 win over New Mexico. Safety [autotag]Major Burns[/autotag] was held out with a neck injury.

After the game, [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] delivered a less-than-ideal update to Burns’ status. The safety suffered an upper neck injury and has been cleared by the doctors, but Kelly said Burns is set to miss the next 3-6 weeks as the team will not rush him back to action.

It’s a big loss for the Tigers’ secondary, but luckily the team is set to get safety [autotag]Joe Foucha[/autotag] back next week. Foucha has missed the first four games with an academic suspension. He will likely start at safety next week against Auburn alongside his former roommate at Arkansas, [autotag]Greg Brooks Jr.[/autotag]

LSU was also without edge rusher [autotag]BJ Ojulari[/autotag] with what Kelly called a “cranky” patella injury, but he’s expected to play next week. Burns, who transferred in from Georgia last year and became a starter this season, is tied for third on the team with 16 tackles. He also ties for the team lead with two pass deflections.

LSU vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

The Lobos are scoring a little bit.

They’re not ripping it up, but they’re averaging 27 points per game – that’s a lot considering how rough it was to get things moving last year.

The running game was solid in the win over UTEP, the defense forced seven takeaways in the victory – New Mexico is fourth in the nation in takeaways – and they’re applying enough defensive pressure to give LSU a hard time.

The Tigers aren’t hitting enough downfield plays, the line is allowing three sacks per game, the special teams continue to be rocky, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why LSU Will Win

That’s the LSU everyone thought was possible.

Had the Tigers started the season off with a warm-up game against Southern instead of Florida State – instead of kicking off against FSU and playing the Jaguars the following week – they’d probably be 3-0. They’re just starting to find a bit of a groove, and it came together with a terrific performance in the win over Mississippi State.

The pass defense was solid in the 31-16 victory, the offense was perfectly balanced, and New Mexico won’t be able to do much more to get things going.

Yeah, the Lobo offense is better than the 2021 version. It’s still not great.

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico will come up with a few takeaways and be just annoying enough defensively to make LSU fans a little bit grouchy.

The Tiger running game will take over, the offense will rise up in the second quarter to take control, and there won’t be any sort of a threat from the Lobo O to make anyone sweat.

It won’t be a perfect performance, but it’s all starting to build under Brian Kelly.

UTEP vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

The Miners haven’t been able to recapture the glory and fun of last year, but it came through with a win over New Mexico State to try getting everything going.

Now it gets another team that should help out in a low scoring game.

The Miner defense struggled with North Texas and Oklahoma – not suprirrisng – but overall the team isn’t making a ton of mistakes, it was great against the Aggie passing game last week, and it should be able to hang with – if not hold down – a New Mexico offense that has to prove it can produce two games in a row.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why New Mexico Will Win

No, UTEP doesn’t have the same mojo.

It can’t push the ball down the field like it did when Jacob Cowing – now at Arizona – was the No. 1 target, and the running game isn’t there to rely on.

New Mexico couldn’t do anything offensively in the loss to Boise State last week, but the parts are there to pound away on a Miner run defense allowing over 200 yards per game and over five yards per carry.

The Lobo defense hasn’t been bad. It’s been good against the run, and it’s been great so far on third downs, and …

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

That’s where New Mexico wins this. It’s going to come up with the third down stops that UTEP won’t.

The Lobos allowed Maine and Boise State to convert just 5-of-28 third down chances, and UTEP won’t fare much better. In a low scoring fight, every possession will matter.

Boise State vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why Boise State Will Win

So what went right in the debacle of a 34-17 loss to Oregon State to start the season?

Hank Bachmeier might still end up being the starting quarterback, but Taylor Green came in and provided a spark for the running game with one big dash, and he was far more effective through the air.

The defense wasn’t awful against the run – that’s a stretch, though – and overall, the team is far better than it showed, especially defensively.

New Mexico might have been wonderful in its 41-0 opener against Maine, but it’s about to welcome in a jacked up team looking to get its season going.

But …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why New Mexico Will Win

Rocky Long is one amazing defensive coach.

The former New Mexico head man is the current defensive coordinator, and his bunch was a rock against Maine with a slew of plays in the backfield all while allowing just 118 yards of total offense.

On the other side, QB Miles Kendrick looks like he’s going to be the right fit to settle the position, the offensive line came up with one of its best performances in years, and …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Did that look like a Boise State team that had its stuff together?

It’s missing the big play pop on either side against the Beavers, there were five turnovers, nothing happening down the field, and too many struggles on third downs.

New Mexico’s defense will prove that it’s far, far better than past seasons, but it’s about to run head first into a Boise State team that’s about to prove that it’s far, far better than it was Saturday night.

New Mexico vs Maine Game Preview

Why Maine Will Win

A new era is starting with Jordan Stevens taking over the Black Bears gig.

He’s a defensive coach who needs to crank up the pass rush, but he’s getting a team that didn’t turn the ball over, was good in pass protection, and shouldn’t have to worry too much about New Mexico coming up with a big offensive performance.

The Lobos finished dead last in the nation in yards per game and averaged a college football-worst 12 points per outing. They should be stronger, but it shouldn’t be all that hard to stay in the game with a few early scores.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why New Mexico Will Win

The offense might not be anything special, but the defense will be far stronger.

Former head coach and defensive mastermind Rocky Long has a young group to work with, but the linebacking corps should be solid and the secondary is loaded with veterans.

Maine isn’t going to come out and hang 50 on the board. It’s going to sputter and struggle to keep the chains moving, and the other side won’t have enough of a pass rush to make a big difference.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Points will come at a premium.

Maine will be good enough to keep this close, but the defense will buckle on a few strong second half Lobo scoring drives. There will be just enough Black Bear mistakes to keep the door open.

The New Mexico defense will keep the game alive, but it’ll be a battle late.
