Wyoming vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

These aren’t the Lobos of the last few years. They’re 2-3, but the defense is playing well, there’s a good ground game, and there are signs things are starting to turn.

The D is among the best in the country on third downs, the turnovers and takeaways are piling up – the Lobos are sixth in the nation in takeaways – and it all needs to come together against a wildly inconsistent Wyoming team that’s struggling way too much lately with the passing game.

But …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Wyoming Will Win

The Wyoming offensive line is playing well. It’s doing a good job in pass protection, the running game is effective – even if the big yards aren’t there – and the main defensive problems are against decent passers.

New Mexico doesn’t really throw the ball.

The Lobo offensive line isn’t anything great, the offense is among the worst in the nation averaging 248 yards per game, and as long as turnovers aren’t an issue, Wyoming shouldn’t have a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

The Cowboys turned it over three times in the opener against Illinois and just three times in the five games since. They’re not going to take any big chances here.

They’re going to get running from the start, the defense should get into the backfield enough to be disruptive, and the losing run will stop now with a solid, low scoring win.

Wyoming vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why Wyoming Will Win

Wyoming has found just about every way to win lately.

It’s been able to get by on lots of free throws. It had a few wins when it owned the boards. It’s been able to move the ball around at times to get key shots in big moments, and it’s been able to clamp down on the three time and again.

It might not be ripping through teams like it did through the first part of the season, but this group is battle tested through tight moments and in tense situations.

Five of the last eight games were decided by three points or fewer, and one of the games that wasn’t went into overtime. It’s 7-1 in that stretch.

New Mexico can’t rebound with the Cowboys and it doesn’t play enough D to win a low scoring fight, but …

Why New Mexico Will Win

The Lobos have picked it up lately.

It got rocked by San Diego State, but it won three of its last four games after going on a brutal seven game losing streak to start 2022.

One of those losses was to Wyoming, but the Lobos were able to make it a fight with a 93-91 up-and-down battle. The inside game is there – they shot 49% or better in five of the last eight games – and the free throw shooting has been great lately when the O can actually get to the line.

However …

What’s Going To Happen

Wyoming hasn’t been bad on the road. Again, it’s a team that knows how to come though when it has to, and it’s got too much firepower for a New Mexico team that went lights out in the first game, but won’t do that this time around.

It’s Wyoming, though. This is going to be close and interesting.

Why Wyoming Will Win

New Mexico isn’t getting the line play it needs.

There isn’t any pass rush, and that’s killing a struggling secondary, and that’s leading to close to 310 passing yards per game. The Lobo offense isn’t able to control the clock enough with an offense that’s been okay, and has a decent passing game at times, but stalls too often.

The Cowboys are doing what they do. They’re dominating with their defensive front that’s eating up offenses, the offense controls the clock, and when there’s a shot at hitting the downfield play, the Cowboys are connecting.

Levi Williams is only hitting 55% of his passes, and he only has one touchdown pass, but the offense is taking advantage of teams cheating up to slow down the ground game.

Week 14 College Schedule

Why New Mexico Will Win

The Lobos have to get the ground game going … somehow.

It has yet to take over a game, but the rushing attack was able to come up with 279 yards against Hawaii with the offense keeping up throughout. Wyoming might have a great pass rush, but the offense isn’t going to roll up big numbers right out of the gate.

The goal is to keep the game in range. The defense hasn’t been bad at taking the ball away, and the Cowboy offensive front will give up plays behind the line. The Lobo O might not be phenomenal, but it needs to be okay, and the D has to be disruptive.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico’s defense isn’t having any luck.

It got obliterated in the first three games by the San Jose State, Hawaii and Nevada passing games, and then got run over by Air Force and Utah State.

Wyoming won’t be able to do much of anything consistently passing the ball, but it’ll Xazavian Valladay will run wild, and the defensive front will take care of the rest against the mediocre Lobo O.
