Mountain West Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Mountain West predictions for every team and every game in the 2022 college football season

With all the chatter in the college football world about expansion and realignment – the Mountain West is deep in the rumor mix with a whole lot of possibilities – there’s still a 2022 season to play. How should it all shape up in the Mountain West?

Beyond just seeing if the Pac-12 and Big 12 are interested, there’s one huge change – the divisions are gone.

The conference has several strong teams, and the two best will play for the championship.

It’s a free for all among the teams to get into the top spots, but the schedules stay intact. There’s a slight imbalance with the stronger teams in what used to be in the West Division facing each other, but they would’ve had to do that anyway.

How should the season go and where is everyone projected to finish? Here are the preseason predictions for all the Mountain West teams.

New Mexico Lobos Preview 2022

It’s taking a little while to get this all going.

Danny Gonzales had a massive rebuild to do for a program that failed to win more than three games for three straight years and after a big 9-4 2016, and then he got thrown into 2020.

The Lobos battled hard through an 0-5 start, pulled off two wins to close out the season to give everyone a little hope, and then came the 2-0 start to 2021 and …

(cue sad trombone)

The offense fell off a cliff. The Lobos didn’t come up with more than 17 points over the last ten games, only hit 14 points twice, and it was a world of ugly.

This year’s team has enough new parts to potentially be better on offense, and the defense – Gonzales’s forte – gets back eight starters and should start to be a factor.

The program has been through tough times before – three straight 1-11 seasons from 2009 to 2011 were rough – but on the plus side there are no expectations whatsoever. The Lobos will be an afterthought in the Mountain West, and they can just turn it loose.

At least that sounds good for …

New Mexico Lobos Preview 2022: Offense

The offense had a rough time. It finished dead last in the nation overall averaging 235 yards per game, and it was dead last in scoring averaging 12 yards per outing.

How bad was the O? It was a whopping 23 yards per game worse than Colorado, and it was 3.4 points per game worse than UConn. So where to begin?

There needs to be some semblance of a steady running game. One of the few bright spots was freshman Aaron Dumas, who ran for 658 yards and close to five yards per carry, and … he’s now off to Washington. No. 2 back Bobby Cole is off in the transfer portal, putting the pressure on Nathaniel Jones, the No. 2 back in 2020 who was out all of last year.

The offensive line has to do its part, but there’s plenty of reworking to be done with just two starters back – losing left tackle Cade Briggs to Texas Tech hurts. There’s decent size but no developed depth whatsoever.

And the quarterback is … ? Isaiah Chavez did what he could in mainly a backup role behind Terry Wilson, but he wasn’t able to turn it loose for an offense that threw everyone it could find at the position. In comes Miles Kendrick from Kansas to try fixing the glitch – he’s got Big 12 experience and can run a bit.

The receivers could be a plus if the quarterbacks can get them the ball. Leading receiver Luke Wysong is back, but he made just 23 catches for 228 yards.

TE Trace Bruckler led the team with three TDs, and on the was from Arizona State is Geordon Porter adding a much-needed deep threat to the mix.

New Mexico Lobos Preview 2022: Defense

The defense did what it could considering there wasn’t any help whatsoever from the offense. Even with being put in bad position after bad position, and having to carry the team, it managed to finish fourth in the Mountain West in total defense, but it couldn’t hold up.

The Lobo defense allowed 54 points in the fourth quarters of games. The Lobo offense scored 50 points in the second half. Fortunately …

Defensive coordinator Rocky Long’s D is going to be strong. This was a relatively young group, and now the D has a tackling machine in Tavian Combs at the Lobo position in the secondary along with Ronald Wilson coming off a 54-stop season. The star, though, is veteran Jerrick Reed, a former JUCO transfer who led the Lobos with 89 stops.

In all, four starters are expected back in the defensive backfield, but they could use some help from more of a pass rush.

Leading sacker Joey Noble is done, but the line has quickness and is one of the few areas on the team with some real depth. There’s not a ton of bulk, but Bryce Santana has just enough size to hold up more on the nose.

The linebackers didn’t make enough plays in the 3-3-5, but there’s plenty of experience in place. Syaire Riley, Cody Moon, and Ray Leutele combined for 125 tackles – they’ll be a positive.

Viewers challenged to spot mountain lion hiding in arroyo

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on Friday challenged followers to spot the mountain lion stalking an elk in the accompanying image.

“The rules are simple. Find the mountain lion in this picture,” the USFWS instructed via Facebook.

If the image looks familiar, FTW Outdoors featured the photo, and a more revealing photo, in a quiz post early last month. (The answer is provided in the accompanying links.)

The images were captured in 2019 by a motion-sensor camera overlooking an arroyo at Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico.

For the answer to a quiz the USFWS titled, “Where’s Lion-o,” click on the  USFWS link or the FTW Outdoors link (cougar is circled). Both provide  more details but neither reveals what happened to the elk.

The USFWS stated: “The outcome of what happened between the elk and the lion remains a mystery, but it’s a good reminder that nature is amazing and sometimes a little sneaky.”

These nine states have never hosted a PGA Tour event

There are still nine states that are still hoping their day in the sun is still to come.

This week the PGA Tour visits the First State for the time.

Wilmington Country Club will play host, marking the PGA Tour’s first-ever event in the state of Delaware and the 10th different venue to host the BMW Championship since the inception of the FedEx Cup in 2007.

“You’ve got to hit it as far as you can and hit a lot of fairways,” advised BMW defending champion and reigning FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay.

Delaware becomes the 41st state in the union to host a Tour event, but that means there are still nine states that are still hoping their day in the sun is still to come.

Maine is one of the nine remaining states that have never hosted a Tour event. Professional golf has been absent from northeast New England, five states within the Mountain Time Zone and Alaska. Some states barely avoided making the list. Nebraska was spared solely by the 1933 Nebraska Open, Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene hosted the 1992 Merrill Lynch Shootout and Arkansas made headlines with the Arlington Hotel Open from 1955-63.

Some of these states have hosted Nationwide, Champions and LPGA events, but the locals are waiting patiently for Rory, Tiger and Jordan to grace them with their presence.

Here’s a list of some of the golf courses that could potentially host the stars of the PGA Tour someday. (Special thanks to longtime Golfweek reader and journalist Peter Kollmann, who helped with the research.)

The Mountain West isn’t exactly wide open, but with Boise State, Air Force, and San Diego State coming back strong, and with several new head coaches about to make a splash, this should be as wild an unpredictable a conference as any in college football.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

University of the Southwest coach, players killed in head-on crash remembered in emotional on-campus vigil

More than 100 people gathered on a putting green behind a dorm on campus in Hobbs, New Mexico.

A vigil was held on Monday night to remember the six players and coach of the University of the Southwest’s golf teams who were killed last week in a head-on crash in Texas.

More than 100 people gathered on a putting green behind a dorm on campus in Hobbs, New Mexico, according to ESPN, to share memories of the victims. Students and faculty raised cellphone flashlights rather than candles due to the wind, and in the moment of silence one of the mourners yelled, “We love you, Mustangs!”

Steve Appel, the school’s athletic director and baseball coach, asked the group to huddle on the green, where they yelled, “Family!” after a count of three.

“When you go home for school breaks, you don’t miss the town. You miss the people,” said soccer coach Edgar Negrete. “We’re all family. I love you all.”

Last Thursday the National Transportation Safety Board said a 13-year-old boy was driving the pickup truck that caused the collision after its left front tire, a spare, blew before impact. The boy, as well as 38-year-old Henrich Siemens, also died.

Head coach Tyler James, 26, was among those killed. The students who died were identified as: Mauricio Sanchez, 19, of Mexico; Travis Garcia, 19, of Pleasanton, Texas; Jackson Zinn, 22, of Westminster, Colorado; Karisa Raines, 21, of Fort Stockton, Texas; Laci Stone, 18, of Nocona, Texas; and Tiago Sousa, 18, of Portugal.

Hayden Underhill, 20, and Dayton Price, 19, survived and remain in the hospital.

University of the Southwest provost Ryan Tipton said there are plans for more memorials next week.

College Performers of the Week powered by Rapsodo: New Mexico men’s golf

New Mexico overtook Arizona in the final round of the John Burns Collegiate, turning a three-shot deficit into a nine-shot victory.

The Lobos went to Hawaii to continue their spring season and brought home a trophy – their second of the season. New Mexico overtook Arizona in the final round of the John Burns Collegiate, turning a three-shot deficit into a nine-shot victory.

New Mexico, ranked No. 37 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, not only picked up a win over No. 24 Arizona, but also, notably, No. 9 Texas A&M. The Lobos won the Wolfpack Classic in the fall, and in their first spring start finished runner-up at the Arizona Intercollegiate.

In six total events this year, New Mexico now has two victories and two runner-up finishes.

At the John Burns, the difference for New Mexico was a strong start. The Lobos started the day on Nos. 1 through 3 in a shotgun start and threw out a slew of birdies to build some momentum.

“Another great job by our guys today,” head coach Glen Millican said in a school release. “We had an awesome start and finished well again in some tough conditions on the hard final five holes. It was an impressive showing and a great win on a fantastic course against some great teams.”

This highly rated (and affordable) golf course in New Mexico is prepping for a facelift

“We haven’t seen numbers like this in a long time. These are the best numbers in more than 15 years.”

FARMINGTON, New Mexico — Most people, when considering the chore of lawn and garden care for their homes, probably cringe a bit about the magnitude of the project.

Now imagine that same bit of work encompassing some 7,200 yards of lawn and garden care.

Piñon Hills Golf Course is in the planning phase right now for what’s expected to be a 90-day process to excavate bunkers as well as replacing outdated irrigation systems.

The anticipated start date of the work is shortly after the start of the new year.

This will be the first real renovation project of its kind for the course in several years, according to PGA Tour professional and course general manager Chris Jones.

“If all the materials arrive when expected, we will close the golf course,” Jones said. “In the event materials are delayed, we will not close the golf course until such time they arrive.”

In a statement released last month on the course’s website, the intent with some of the work being done is to “restore the desert and native areas to a non-watered, natural state,” which means replacing and repairing existing watering systems.

“This will give us a state-of-the-art system in which we can control each one of the 1,500 sprinkler heads from any remote device,” Jones said. “It will save us a lot of water and a lot of money at the same time.”

Piñon Hills will work with a variety of different businesses to assist the renovation process, including Mid-America Golf & Landscape, operated out of Lee’s Summit, Missouri.

[listicle id=778109444]

It is expected that more than 30 contractors and workers from that business will be supplying materials for the renovation and will be in charge of supervising the work on the course set to begin in January.

“Once that starts and we completely close down the course, it’s about a three-month process,” Jones said. “There’s a possibility that some side work might still be going on as far as finishing touches, but the bulk of the work takes about 90 days.”

Weather considering, that places the expected reopening of the course sometime around late March to early April.

“The guys who are working the course, they do this for a living and work in any kind of weather,” Jones said. “If we run into some heavy snow, that can set us back a bit but for the most part we’re expecting they’ll work right through the timeframe.”

In addition to the irrigation work, the excavation of the bunkers is another high-profile part of the renovation process.

For that, Piñon Hills is calling on the services of the Better Billy Bunker Method, based out of Hermitage, Tennessee.

Pinon Hills Golf Course in Farmington, New Mexico, is about to undergo a massive renovation which will include restoration of bunkers and updates to irrigation systems. (Contributed photo)

Among their clients have been respected courses like Indian Hills Country Club, located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. They also have received endorsements from superintendents at Augusta National, home of the Masters.

“They go in and take out all the old lining and sand and they make sure the drainage works before making changes to the polymer around the bunkers,” Jones said. “You’ll never see a weed grow through it.”

Ranked as one of the top courses by Golfweek (No. 4 on the list of courses you can play in New Mexico), Piñon Hills has been recognized by many as one of the best public golf courses in the United States. It’s also extremely affordable, with weekday rates under $50, even for non-residents.

Since opening in 1989, Piñon Hills has primarily maintained its original design, but a recent flurry of activity has spurred on need for a change.

The popularity of the sport of golf in general has been wide in the past year, mostly because it gave participants the chance to be outdoors when many indoor businesses were shut down or limited to capacity.

“Since we re-opened (summer of 2020), we haven’t seen numbers like this in a long time,” Jones said. “These are the best numbers in more than 15 years.”

With the emergence of disc golf and footgolf and the ability to play those sports at courses across the region, interest in the courses has seen a huge boost.

“People having access to these courses have seen numbers go off the charts,” Jones said. “The pandemic has been awful in a lot of respects but golf has been an unexpected beneficiary of people getting out and rediscovering the sport.”

The rising popularity of both the sport and the course, as well as the necessity for change was reason enough to go ahead with this project.

According to Jones, more than 90 percent of the current irrigation systems on the course are from the original design and construction, making it unreliable in recent years and time-consuming for maintenance workers on the course.

“This has been a project we felt needed to be done for many years now,” Jones said. “The irrigation system on its own is going to make a huge difference.”

Once completed, Jones hopes that golfers returning to Piñon Hills will not notice many changes, as they’re not expected to have an impact in terms of the length of the course.

“We might move a tee box here or there a few yards left or right,” Jones said. “But we’re not looking to change the course itself. The original design still stands on its own.”

Why San Diego State Will Win

The defense isn’t going to give up a whole lot of anything on the ground.

Again, New Mexico at least has to give it a shot. The O line hasn’t generated enough of a push, but there has to be an attempt to control the tempo of the game early on. Even so, it’s not going to go anywhere.

The Aztecs are stuffing everyone, halting Arizona to just 51 yards on the ground, Utah to 70, and overall it’s No. 2 in the nation against the run behind Wisconsin.

On the other side, the ground attack has been consistent with 200 yards or more in every game, averaging over five yards per carry.

What’s Going To Happen

The Aztecs are going to own the lines, the clock, and the game from the start.

They’ll go on two early scoring drives and New Mexico won’t have enough of a passing game to get any momentum.
