2023-2024 College Football Coaching Carousel

Texas A&M hires Duke’s Mike Elko as the coaching carousel continues to spin.

The end of the college football season is here and the coaching carousel is once again getting fired up. This season saw two early head coaching changes within the Big Ten to get an early jump on things, but more coaching changes are popping up as we close in on the end of another regular season around the nation.

We’ll keep track of all of the head coaching changes in our updated coaching carousel tracker to see what head coaches are out and who is replacing them. This will be updated daily as needed with the latest head coaching changes as jobs open up and are filled. As is so often the case in college football, one coaching vacancy being filled will lead to another opening popping up as a result.

As of Thursday, Dec. 8 there are 2 head coaching vacancies in college football, including 1 power conference job to fill. A total of 19 head coaching changes have been made this year.

Below is the updated chart for this year’s edition of the head coaching carousel in college football. After that is a bit more detail on each job opening, listed in alphabetical order.

Grant Sherfield signs to play with the Phoenix Suns for NBA Summer League

Former Oklahoma guard Grant Sherfield signs with the Pheonix Suns to join their Summer league roster.

Former Oklahoma Sooners guard Grant Sherfield is looking to make his way in the NBA the same way former Sooner Austin Reaves is doing it.

After going undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft, Sherfield signed a deal with the Phoenix Suns to play with their Summer League team to fight for a two-way contract.

Sherfield declared for the draft after playing one season at Oklahoma. He previously had played at Wichita State and two years at Nevada before arriving in Norman. Under Porter Moser, he averaged a team-high 15.9 points with  2.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. Sherfield shot 40.3% from the field and 39.4% from the three-point range. He was an integral part of Oklahoma’s squad this past season.

Sherfield’s journey to the NBA won’t be easy, but using the Summer League to showcase to the Pheonix Suns that he can play is a start. Sherfield’s best traits include playmaking, being adept in the pick and roll, and shooting off the dribble. He also has a good size for a would-be point guard at 6-foot-2 with a wingspan of up to 6-foot-6.

With the Suns’ current configuration, they are thin at the lead guard position after trading former All-Star point guard Chris Paul to the Washington Wizards for a package centered around Bradley Beal.

Ultimately, with the combination of Beal, Devin Booker, and future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant all on payroll, the Suns will need cheap and productive bench players to surround their three stars if they truly plan to contend in the Western Conference.

This scenario allows draft picks and undrafted free agents like Sherfield to earn valuable minutes in a championship-contending rotation.

Sooners Guard Grant Sherfield named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week

Oklahoma Sooners guard Grant Sherfield named Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week

After an already successful weekend at the Jumpman Invitational, Oklahoma Sooners guard Grant Sherfield is still reaping the benefits of his fantastic performance against the Florida Gators. The transfer from Wichita, KS has been named a Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week, along with Kansas State’s Nae’Qwan Tomlin.

Oklahoma is Sherfield’s third stop in his college career. He spent time at Wichita State and Nevada before transferring to OU last April.

Sherfield’s short time at OU has been quite good. He’s averaging 18 points per game and 3.8 assists per game.

The Sooners have a 9-3 record heading into a New Year’s Eve matchup with the Texas Longhorns at the Lloyd Noble Center. The No. 6 Longhorns are 10-1 this season and have won four straight after losing to Illinois.

The only ranked opponent the Sooners have faced so far this season was Arkansas. OU fell to the Razorbacks at the BOK Center in Tulsa. It’s been a solid start to the second year of Porter Moser’s tenure. Opening Big 12 play against the Texas Longhorns will provide a stiff conference test for the Sooners.

Adrian Jackson becomes third Oregon player to transfer to Nevada

Former Oregon players are setting up shop in Nevada with the latest being LB Adrian Jackson.

A lot of former Oregon Ducks seem to be finding a new home down in Nevada.

On Thursday night it was announced that former Oregon linebacker Adrian Jackson would be committing to the Nevada Wolfpack, where he would join both LB Jackson LaDuke and RB Sean Dollars, who also transferred to Nevada this offseason.

Ken Wilson, the head coach of the Wolfpack, is the former LB coach for the Ducks, and former Oregon RB coach Jim Mastro holds a front-office role with the team.

Jackson announced that he was entering the transfer portal back in August, so he has sat out the last several months while making his decision on where to play. In his three years with the Ducks, Jackson had 28 tackles and 1 sack in 19 games.

Former Oregon RB Sean Dollars transfer to Nevada Wolfpack

Sean Dollars is headed to Nevada, where he will join both Ken Wilson and Jim Mastro, a pair of former Oregon coaches.

The Oregon Ducks found out earlier this offseason that veteran running back Sean Dollars was entering the transfer portal and looking to leave Eugene.

Now we know where Dollars is landing.

On Sunday afternoon, Dollars announced that he would be transferring to the Nevada Wolfpack, where he will join former Oregon LB coach Ken Wilson, who took over as the head coach prior to the 2022 season. Dollars will also be joining former Oregon RB coach Jim Mastro in Nevada, who is now the Senior Director of Administration and Operations.

After the 2021 season, Dollars entered the transfer portal following Mario Cristobal’s departure but eventually came back to Eugene. Dollars’ workload in 2022 under the new coaching staff was not as big as some expected, so it didn’t come as a major surprise to see him enter the portal once again.

Oregon MBB recap: Richardson’s triple-double leads Ducks over Nevada

Will Richardson’s triple-double leads Oregon over a very good Nevada team 78-65 to get back to a .500 record.

It hasn’t happened in nearly 20 years.

Will Richardson racked up a triple-double with 19 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds in Oregon’s 78-65 win over Nevada. The win put the Ducks back to .500 at 5-5 and the Wolfpack dropped to 8-3.

Luke Jackson was the last Oregon Duck men’s player to accomplish the feat. Of course, Sabrina Ionescu made it a habit throughout her career at Oregon.

Richardson, a fifth-year senior, waited until the waning moments of the game in order to get that 10th board. The game itself was well in hand as Oregon was actively trying to get its point guard that one last rebound.

Not to be overshadowed, however, was Quincy Guerrier’s 26 points and nine rebounds. The Ducks shot the ball well all night long as they were 46 percent from the field and 11-of-27 from downtown.

LB Jackson LaDuke follows former Oregon coach to Nevada

Former Oregon LB Jackson LaDuke is heading to Nevada to joining Ken Wilson, the former Ducks’ LB coach who recruited LaDuke to Eugene.

Former Oregon Ducks linebacker Jackson LaDuke has found a new home with a familiar face.

It was announced on Friday night that LaDuke, a player who played in 18 games through 3 season with the Ducks, would be transferring to the Nevada Wolfpack, joining former Oregon linebackers coach Ken Wilson.

Wilson, who was named the head coach at Nevada last year, recruited LaDuke to the Ducks, so it makes sense that he would find a home there and hope to see an increase in playing time.

LaDuke entered the transfer portal on December 4, so it didn’t take long for him to find a new home.

5 takeaways from the Iowa Hawkeyes’ abysmal opener against South Dakota State

Iowa topped South Dakota State, 7-3. Here’s the five biggest takeaways from the Hawkeyes’ season-opening triumph.

I honestly don’t even feel like writing about this game, or giving this team any attention right now. All credit to South Dakota State. They are not a pushover despite their FCS status and they played hard on defense. They were overmatched on offense, which was always going to be a likelihood with the talent on Iowa’s defense, but they surely were right there to stop Iowa’s offense.

Was that South Dakota State playing out of their minds, or Iowa just being a complete disaster? You can make your own judgement, but I know what my choice is.

I don’t care that they are a good FCS opponent, this Iowa team went into the season with aspirations of making it back to the Big Ten Championship game! That’s how you start out the season at home?! It was an embarrassment, it was a disgrace, and a disservice to every fan that sat through that mess in Kinnick Stadium Saturday. Ferentz and his staff need to figure it out, or this is going to be a long, long season.

That said off the top, let’s look at five of the biggest takeaways for the Hawkeyes versus South Dakota State.

Every Iowa football opponents’ players on the 2022 Senior Bowl watch list

The Hawkeyes will see plenty of talent in 2022. Which players on Iowa’s schedule were featured on the Senior Bowl watch list?

The Senior Bowl is the most prestigious all-star event in college football. For those unaware, the week-long mega festival is an NFL draft followers dream. Executive Director Jim Nagy and his team scour the college ranks all season, working with NFL teams to find the next crop of graduating players that have league interest. These are the guys the league wants to get a closer look at. There’s the weigh-in, an event that has to be silly to all non-sports fans, three days of practice, and finally the game. The practice is the main attraction for those in attendance, and while extremely important for the select players down there, the chance to interview with NFL coaches and front office personnel is everything. The week can make or break your draft stock at the end of the day.

On Wednesday, the Senior Bowl released its official watch list. Iowa was well represented with seven players on the list, but what about their opponents. Which athletes currently on the Hawkeyes’ scheduled slate are recognized as potential NFL talents? Here is your one stop shop for all of the players on opposing teams that made it on the Senior Bowl Watchlist.

Where do the Iowa Hawkeyes and their 2022 opponents rank in ESPN’s final SP+ projections?

ESPN’s final SP+ rankings are out. Here’s where Iowa ranks and every 2022 opponent of the Hawkeyes ranks as well.

Week zero is officially upon us, which means the season is essentially here. That also means it’s the last chance for any final preseason rankings. ESPN’s final SP+ rankings from Bill Connelly are here.

Back in May, the Iowa Hawkeyes checked in with the nation’s No. 27 SP+ ranking. Has that changed at all? How have the Hawkeyes’ opponents rankings altered in the months since?

Real quick, here’s a reminder on what exactly the SP+ ranking from ESPN is and how exactly it works.

SP+ is a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. It is a predictive measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football, not a résumé ranking, and, along those same lines, these projections aren’t intended to be a guess at what the AP Top 25 will look like at the end of the year. These are simply early offseason power rankings based on the information we have been able to gather to date. – Connelly, ESPN.

SP+ rankings are created using three primary factors: returning production, recent recruiting and recent history. Keep in mind that South Dakota State will not appear in these rankings as the Jackrabbits are an FCS opponent. Without further ado, let’s take a look at where Iowa and all of the Hawkeyes’ opponents are ranked in ESPN’s final preseason SP+ rankings.
