Malachi Nelson was so hungry for playing time that he trusted a rookie head coach

Malachi Nelson wasn’t worried that first-year Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson has a lot to prove.

The Boise State Broncos struggled last season. They struggled so much, in fact, that they fired head coach Andy Avalos well before the end of the season. They promoted Spencer Danielson to the interim head coaching position. Players loved playing for Danielson. They proved it by storming to the Mountain West Championship Game and then winning that game over UNLV. The response to Danielson from the Boise State roster was so roundly and uniformly positive that Boise State made Danielson the permanent head coach, a wise decision. Danielson certainly earned his chance to lead the Broncos into 2024.

The fact that Danielson won over his players and got the best out of them in a handful of games is, in itself, impressive. However, it’s very different from leading a team from start to finish over the course of a full season.

USC has had experiences with interim coaches who do well and then make a bid for the permanent head coaching job. Clay Helton is an interim who successfully got the permanent job in 2015. Ed Orgeron wanted the permanent job a few years earlier after a strong interim stint, but USC went with Steve Sarkisian instead.

We can all agree: Spencer Danielson might be a really good head coach, but he has to prove it first.

This could have been a deterrent to Malachi Nelson when he considered where he would play in 2024. Clearly, Danielson’s unproven identity as a college head coach did not dissuade the USC transfer. Nelson and Danielson are linked to each other. Their uncertain futures will depend on the other’s success. It will be fascinating to see how this partnership unfolds in Idaho.

2023-2024 College Football Coaching Carousel

Texas A&M hires Duke’s Mike Elko as the coaching carousel continues to spin.

The end of the college football season is here and the coaching carousel is once again getting fired up. This season saw two early head coaching changes within the Big Ten to get an early jump on things, but more coaching changes are popping up as we close in on the end of another regular season around the nation.

We’ll keep track of all of the head coaching changes in our updated coaching carousel tracker to see what head coaches are out and who is replacing them. This will be updated daily as needed with the latest head coaching changes as jobs open up and are filled. As is so often the case in college football, one coaching vacancy being filled will lead to another opening popping up as a result.

As of Thursday, Dec. 8 there are 2 head coaching vacancies in college football, including 1 power conference job to fill. A total of 19 head coaching changes have been made this year.

Below is the updated chart for this year’s edition of the head coaching carousel in college football. After that is a bit more detail on each job opening, listed in alphabetical order.

Report: Former Boise co-defensive coordinators to join Auburn staff

New Auburn head coach Bryan Harsin has reportedly hired two of his assistants at Boise State to join the Tigers staff.

It has already been a busy day for Bryan Harsin.

Earlier it was reported that former Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason will join Harsin’s staff at Auburn as the defensive coordinator and now a new report says that two members of his staff at Boise State, Spencer Danielson and Jeff Schmedding, will also be coming to the Plains. The two were co-defensive coordinators for the Broncos under Harsin.

Per AL.com, Danielson will join the Tigers in some variety of defensive role. He is currently serving as the Broncos interim head coach.

Adam Rittenberg reported that Schmedding will be the new linebackers coach for Auburn, replacing Travis Williams.

During Auburn’s loss to Northwestern in the Citrus Bowl, Harsin joined the television broadcast and talked about forming his staff.

“We’ve got to be able to put a staff together and get the right people in to be a part of our program,” Harsin said. “We’re focused on doing the things at Auburn that we have to do to be successful as we move towards this next semester and getting these guys back.”

Yesterday it was announced that Bryan Harsin added former Boise State strength and conditioning coach Jeff Pittman to his staff. Today he added another familiar face off the Boise State coaching tree in defensive line coach/co-defensive coordinator Spencer Danielson.

After Harsin made his departure to Auburn, Danielson took over interim coaching duties for the Broncos.

Danielson attended Azusa Pacific University where he started for three seasons at linebacker before graduating in 2012. From 2009-2012 he recorded 190 total tackles, 12.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, and five interceptions. Danielson earned a degree in business administration as well as his MBA from Azusa Pacific. Upon graduating he recruited linebackers from 2013-2015 and in 2016 served as the recruiting coordinator.

Danielson joined Harsin’s Boise State staff in 2017 as a graduate assistant. In 2019 he was promoted to defensive line coach. It’s worth noting that under Danielson’s leadership, Boise State’s Curtis Weaver and Jabril Frazier received first-team All-Mountain West honors with both players ranking in the top 10 in the conference for sacks. Their efforts led the Broncos to ranking 10th nationally in average sacks per game with 3.00.
