NFL and NFLPA agree to virtual offseason program

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the National Football League and the Players Association have agreed to a virtual offseason program.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the start of the National Football League’s offseason program will look drastically different this year.

With all team facilities closed until further notice, the NFL and NFLPA have now agreed to the terms of a virtual offseason, which will begin April 20 for clubs with new head coaches and April 27 for all other teams around the league.

The voluntary program will include classroom instruction, workouts and non-football education programs conducted in a virtual format. No teams are allowed to resume activities at club headquarters until all 32 teams have been safely cleared to return.

While participation is voluntary, players who opt into the program will be eligible to earn their off-season workout bonuses. Should team facilities remained closed by the scheduled start of minicamps, clubs may conduct a virtual minicamp for veteran players.

Grinding the all-22 like a professional

The NFL made their GamePass product available for free until the end of May for fans. Here’s are some tips for watching the All-22.

As we all adjust to a new life while the planet deals with the COVID-19 virus, we are getting used to living without live sports. To help fill the gap, the NFL has made their GamePass product available for free until the end of May. Some of you might be taking the plunge into GamePass, and the “All-22” for the first time. As someone who has been using the product for years, here are some tips on how you can grind the tape like a pro.

Getting Started

At first glance, the NFL GamePass system might be a bit overwhelming. But here are some pointers on how to get started.

When you enter the system, you will see a screen that looks almost identical to this one:

In the top blue bar you see, working from left to right, the following: “Games,” “NFL Originals,” “Film Session,” “Search,” and “Teams.” This is the place to begin. If you click on “Games,” as the above screen indicates, you will then be able to navigate through each week of the season. The default setting is the most recent week, and as you see the Super Bowl is the only game listed.

“NFL Originals” brings you to an incredible library of everything the NFL has produced, from the “America’s Game” series to “Hard Knocks” to “All or Nothing” and everything else you can imagine. “Film Session” is the film series with Brian Baldinger and Ron Jaworski breaking down game film with players like Cameron Jordan, Thomas Davis and Adam Thielen, plus coaches like Doug Pederson. “Search” is a topic on its own, and finally the “Teams” section will allow you to pick a single team, and pull up its entire season:

That’s what you see first when you click on “Teams,” and then when you click on the Baltimore Ravens. All of their 2019 games in reverse chronological order, plus you can also find original content featuring the Ravens such as “Sound FX: Ray Lewis” or “America’s Game: 2000 Baltimore Ravens.”

So now, let’s watch a game. To get started, say with the Super Bowl, you drag your cursor over the game, and you will see the following:

These are the four different ways of watching a game. The “Full Replay” is just the replay of the broadcast version, complete with the replays. As we will see in a moment, that also allows you to skip throughout the game by selecting a particular play. The “Condensed” version is an edited, shortened version of the broadcast version, usually somewhere between 30 to 40 minutes. Replays are stripped out, and you cannot skip around between plays. “Listen” allows you to hear the radio calls from both the home and the away teams. Then finally, the “Coaches Film” brings you to the All-22 goodness.

So let’s click on that and get started:

The player immediately brings you to the opening kickoff of the game. Now there are a few things to note before we start talking about the film itself. In the upper right corner you see the bar graph. Clicking on that allows you to view stats for the game. In the bottom left you’ll see the “-10” and “+10” options. That allows you to rewind or fast forward each play by ten seconds. That and the “Play/Pause” button are going to get a workout.

You’ll also see what looks to be a three item list, next to the stats option in the upper right. Click on that and the film window will shrink, but it will pull up a very handy feature for you:

That brings up the play-by-play list for the entire game. So if you wanted to work through the game focusing on all running plays, all passing plays, or you know a play in particular you wanted to watch, say, a huge third down conversion in the fourth quarter, you can click to that play and within seconds, there it is:

Look away San Francisco 49ers fans…

So now we know the basic mechanics. Now the fun begins. Let’s talk about what to watch for on the All-22.

NFL draft to proceed as planned

In a letter to all 32 teams, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced that the 2020 NFL Draft will proceed as scheduled.

As the world slows down in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, the sports world has ground to a halt. Major league baseball’s opening day, scheduled for today, did not take place. The NBA and NHL hit the pause button on their seasons, and the XFL shut its inaugural season down.

However, with the benefit of time in front of them the National Football League has gone forward roughly as scheduled. Free agency began and actually served as a nice distraction for both fans and media members alike. With the 2020 NFL Draft looming, and the league deciding not to proceed with the big event scheduled for Las Vegas, many were wondering if the league would postpone the draft.

In a letter to all 32 teams from Commissioner Roger Goodell, it was announced on Thursday night that the draft would proceed as scheduled, at the end of April:

In the letter, Commissioner Goodell writes that “Everyone recognizes that public health conditions are highly uncertain and there is no assurance that we can select a different date and be confident that conditions will be significantly more favorable than they are today. I also believe that the Draft can serve a very positive purpose for our clubs, our fans, and the country at large, and many of you have agreed.”

Goodell also indicated that the draft will have a different feel. “Because of the unique circumstances in our country today, the 2020 Draft will obviously need to be conducted in a different way. Already, we have canceled all public events, we will not be bringing prospects and their families to the Draft, and the Draft itself will be conducted and televised in a way that reflects current conditions.”

While questions might remain about the logistics, as well as how teams will be able to bring players in for events such as rookie mini-camps and OTAs, at least there is certainty that for now, the draft will proceed as scheduled.

What does this mean? More mock drafts, of course!

The Patriots QB search should stop: Start Jarrett Stidham in 2020

The Patriots should start Jarrett Stidham for the 2020 season.

Ever since Tom Brady announced his departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there has been a fair amount of speculation in regards to who will start for the New England Patriots in 2020. Should they pick up veteran free agent to help bridge the gap? Or should they go with second-year signal-caller Jarrett Stidham?

For 2020, the answer is clear. The Patriots quarterback search should stop at Stidham.

We saw a bit of Stidham in 2019, albeit in limited action. He appeared in three games overall, with his first game of the season being the biggest sample size of all. He went two-of-three on the afternoon, throwing for 14 yards and an interception against the Jets on September 22. An 11-yard pass was his longest of the afternoon. He showed potential at Auburn and Baylor, even if his final season was lackluster.

He broke onto the college football scene in 2015 as a freshman with Baylor. He appeared in 10 games, throwing for 1,265 yards, 12 touchdowns, and two interceptions. Starting as a true freshman, it was evident he had talent. He sat out the 2016 season due to transfer rules, and would spend the 2017 and 2018 seasons at Auburn. The 2017 season was his best, as he threw for 3,158 yards, 18 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

He is still raw in terms of development. However, there is no doubt that there is something there. We saw it a bit in the preseason last year. In particular, his connection with Jakobi Myers was notable.

New England needs to see what Stidham can do. For perspective, the New England Patriots drafted Jimmy Garoppolo at a time when Brady was still on top of his game. They had room to work in terms of letting Garoppolo  develop for a couple seasons. Garoppolo was drafted in 2014 with the 62nd overall pick. New England would go on to win two additional Super Bowls with Garoppolo still on the roster.

The Patriots do not have that luxury right now. They are in a rebuilding phase that allows them to test their options for the future. There is no immediate pressure to win right now, and New England should see what they have at their disposal. At the very least, it will give them a glimpse into if they need to make a move for another quarterback down the road, or if they can ride with Stidham for the foreseeable future.

Report: Seahawks sign former Patriots WR Phillip Dorsett

Former New England Patriots wide receiver Philip Dorsett is on the move, signing a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

Former New England Patriots wide receiver Phillip Dorsett is on the move. Tuesday, Dorsett agreed to a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, per ESPN’S Josina Anderson.

Dorsett was part of the trade that saw quarterback Jacoby Brissett go to the Indianapolis Colts in September 2017.

His best season with New England came in 2019. He played in 14 games, starting four of them. He caught 29 passes for 387 yards and five touchdowns.

In terms of his top postseason performance, he had a productive 2018 run, one that culminated with the team winning the Super Bowl. He caught five passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 14 yards per catch.

Dorsett achieved success from the get-go in 2019. In the team’s season-opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he caught four passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns.

The Miami product served his role in New England,  having been an important secondary piece at wide receiver.  He concludes his career in Foxborough having recorded 73 catches for 881 yards and eight touchdowns in three seasons.

Dorsett now joins a Seattle wide receiving group that includes the likes of quarterback Russell Wilson and playmaking wide receivers in DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

Instant analysis of Patriots releasing Stephen Gostkowski

The New England Patriots released kicker Stephen Gostkowski on Monday. What does it mean moving forward?

The New England Patriots released kicker Stephen Gostkowski on Monday, as the organization’s free agency overhaul continues.

Gostkowski was drafted in the fourth round with the 118th overall pick in 2006 out of Memphis. His best season came in 2013, when he went 38-of-41 on field goals. He showed particular strength on field goals of 50-plus yards that year, converting five-of-six. He was perfect on all 44 extra points he attempted. In total, he had 158 points that year.

He scored at least 100 points in eight consecutive years from 2011 to 2018. He scored over 150 points three times in his career.

The 2019 season was a difficult one for Gostkowski. After signing a two-year deal with New England in April, he suffered a left hip injury. He was placed on injured reserve for only the second time in 14 years. From there, the Patriots employed several kickers, most notably Nick folk and Kai Forbath.

Overall, he had an exceptional career with New England. Despite the consistencies towards the end of it, he still provided a nice segue from Adam Vinatieri and provided stability for the organization at the position. In a day and age where good kickers seem to be at a premium, Gostkowski was a constant during his time in Foxboro and a point machine throughout his entire career.

The New England Patriots will have to find a kicker in what is a growing list of needs for the organization. As the organization enters a new era, this is just another example.  A tremendous amount of roster turnover has taken place within the last couple of weeks.  New England could draft a kicker in the later rounds next month. This may be the best course of action for the organization moving forward.

Report: Patriots sign former Jets linebacker Brandon Copeland

The Patriots added to their defense on Sunday, signing former Jets linebacker Brandon Copeland.

The New England Patriots continue to be busy in free agency, and Sunday was no different. They agreed to terms with former Jets linebacker Brandon Copeland, according to The Boston Globe’s Jim McBride.

Copeland went undrafted in the 2013 NFL Draft, and he began his career with the Baltimore Ravens. Since then, he has bounced around the league, spending time with the New York Jets over the last two seasons.

The 2018 season was the best one of his career. He played in 16 games, starting 10 of them. Recording two pass deflections, he recorded five sacks and 35 tackles. His 14 quarterback hits  were also a career-high.

Copeland had his best year tackle-wise last year. He played in 12 games, starting three of them. He recorded 42 tackles and three quarterback hits. He also forced a fumble, and recorded a sack and a half.

The Patriots certainly need to add depth to the linebacker position. After losing Elandon Roberts and Kyle van Noy as well as Jamie Collins, linebacker is certainly a positional priority for the organization moving forward.

The organization has already began to add pieces defensively, with Beau Allen and Adrian Phillips joining the team last week.

It will be interesting to see what other moves the organization makes as they retool the team.
