NBA Rising Stars 2023: Full rosters revealed in draft announcement

The NBA on Tuesday unveiled the four seven-player teams for the 2023 NBA Rising Stars game.

The NBA on Tuesday unveiled the four seven-player teams for the 2023 NBA Rising Stars competition set to take place on Feb. 17 as part of All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The showcase will feature four seven-player teams competing in a mini-tournament consisting of three games for the second straight year. Each game will be played to a final target score, meaning a game will end with a made basket or a made free throw instead of a running clock.

The pool of 28 players for the game consists of 11 first-year players, 10 second-year players and seven players from the G League. The rookies and sophomores were selected by assistant coaches, and the G League players were chosen by the league office.

The G League players will comprise one of the four teams.

The three teams from the NBA will be coached by Pau Gasol, Joakim Noah and Deron Williams. The three former players each selected seven players to their teams on Tuesday in an order determined by career All-Star appearances: Gasol (6), Williams (3) and Noah (2).

Here are the four rosters for the NBA Rising Stars competition.

What a Bones Hyland trade could mean for Nuggets rookie Christian Braun

Nuggets rookie Christian Braun could see a larger role should the team trade Bones Hyland prior to the deadline.

Bones Hyland is averaging career highs nearly across the board with the Denver Nuggets this season, but the second-year guard could soon find himself on a new team.

Hyland is the subject of trade rumors ahead of the deadline on Feb. 9, and he is reportedly open to a change of scenery. He has expressed the desire to play a larger role elsewhere and is willing to be traded to facilitate that change.

The former 26th pick is averaging 12.1 points, three assists and two rebounds on 37.8% shooting from 3-point range in 42 games this season. He has been a mainstay in the second unit but has been inconsistent. He was benched in the second half on Tuesday.

According to Chris Haynes of TNT and Bleacher Report, the team has explored the idea of trading Hyland prior to the deadline next week and has received strong interest from teams.

League sources have informed me that Bones Hyland is open to being traded to secure a larger role. The Nuggets have canvassed the market to gauge interest, and there are a handful of teams who are interested. … If a deal is constructed eventually, the Nuggets believe that rookie Christian Braun is ready to take that next step.

Braun has played sporadically this season and is averaging 3.7 points and two rebounds in 46 games this season. He has given the team a lift at times but has failed to see consistent minutes due to several players ahead of him on the depth chart, including Hyland.

Nuggets coach Michael Malone has expressed on numerous occasions this season that he would like to get more minutes for Braun but has been unable to do so given the configuration of the team. However, a trade involving Hyland could change that.

The front office will certainly weigh its options ahead of next week, but it appears as though Hyland could be on his way out and Braun will have the chance to log more minutes moving forward.

ESPN’s Zach Lowe reveals 2021-22 NBA All-Rookie teams

Lowe revealed his official ballot on Thursday with the three likely Rookie of the Year front-runners leading way for the first team.

With the 2021-22 regular season now wrapped up, several members of the media have started to reveal their official ballots for the end-of-season awards voting.

A panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters are responsible for casting ballots for Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and several other categories. Included in the voting are the All-Rookie teams, which are voted on without consideration for positions.

Zach Lowe of ESPN, who is a voter, revealed his official ballot on Thursday with the three likely Rookie of the Year front-runners leading way in Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley and Scottie Barnes.

2021-22 NBA All-Rookie first team

Player Team
Cade Cunningham Detroit Pistons
Evan Mobley Cleveland Cavaliers
Scottie Barnes Toronto Raptors
Franz Wagner Orlando Magic
Herb Jones New Orleans Pelicans

Currently, four of the five first-team players appear to be locked in on most ballots with Cunningham, Mobley, Barnes and Wagner. Lowe revealed the only decision to make came down to the fifth pick and it was between Jones and Jalen Green of the Houston Rockets.

He ultimately went with Jones with Green falling to the second team.

2021-22 NBA All-Rookie second team

Player Team
Jalen Green Houston Rockets
Alperen Sengun Houston Rockets
Bones Hyland Denver Nuggets
Ayo Dosunmu Chicago Bulls
Josh Giddey Oklahoma City Thunder

Lowe explained that Giddey would have made the first team but ultimately dropped to the second team due to the number of games he missed. He appeared in only 54 games and played in only one game after the All-Star break due to a hip injury.

Said Lowe:

The only drama on first team was the final spot, which came down to Jones and Green. Had Giddey played more games, that spot was his.

With such a good rookie class this year, there were plenty of candidates to choose from for the 10 spots across the two teams. Of course, there are going to be plenty of snubs from the All-Rookie teams and some solid players are going to be left off.

The voting for Rookie of the Year and the All-Rookie teams will certainly be worth monitoring when the results are released by the NBA. The two categories look to be among the most competitive this year, which left voters with something serious to consider.

There goes that Mann: Tre rising up in latest Rookie Power Rankings

Rookie Wire takes a look at the top first-year players over the last two weeks of the 2021-22 season.

With less than 10 games to go in the 2021-22 season for most teams, the NBA has seen several storylines break out recently. As a result, there have been some incredible individual performances.

The stars of the league have seemingly gone off on a nightly basis as of late, while the rookie class continues to show out. They may not be exploding for 50 points like their peers, but the group continues to throw its weight around as one of the best classes in recent memory.

To make sense of it all, we took a look at the best recent performances of these first-year players and ranked them in the latest edition of the Rookie Wire Power Rankings. The rankings are not for Rookie of the Year purposes but, rather, to illustrate the best players week to week.

‘He showed out’: Nuggets react to signature game by Bones Hyland

Playing in front of over 500 friends and family, and millions more watching on TV, Hyland had a signature game when the Nuggets needed it.

In front of at least 500 friends and family, and millions more watching on TV, Bones Hyland had a signature performance to send the Denver Nuggets to a win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Hyland produced 21 points, four rebounds and two assists in 31 minutes to help the Nuggets to a 114-110 win. He hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, including the dagger with 1:51 left in the game to seal the victory for Denver.

“I think he had around 500 people representing his hometown here tonight and he showed out,” Nuggets head coach Michael Malone said. “He had just a great game. He hit some big, big shots for us.”

Hyland, who was born in Wilmington, Delaware, roughly 30 minutes away, faced the 76ers for the first time this season in Philadelphia. Given the occasion, Hyland had a packed guest list there and even estimated that there could have more than 700 friends and family in attendance.

Included in that count was the Wilmington Fire Department.

The 21-year-old suffered through a tragic loss in March 2018 when a house fire took the life of his grandmother and one-year-old cousin. He also endured a significant knee injury when he was forced to jump from the second story to escape the fire.

With the Nuggets in Philadelphia, those individuals that were involved in the incident were on hand to witness Hyland play, something that meant a lot to him. Hyland had the opportunity to greet them prior to the game.

“He takes a tremendous amount of pride in where he is from and the people that have helped him get here,” Malone said. “For him to have that game — 21 points, 7-of-14 from the field and knocks down four 3s — and to be a young kid, in this atmosphere: ‘Fearless.’ That is one word I’d use to describe Bones Hyland.”

The Nuggets, who trailed by as many as 19 points, snapped a two-game losing streak with the win. The comeback marked their largest of the season as they maintain a 1.5-game lead over the Minnesota Timberwolves in seventh place.

It wasn’t a career night from Hyland but it was certainly a memorable one for him. Considering the circumstances, the game was likely one Hyland won’t soon forget.

“To come back to my hometown and put on a show here, that is a dream come true for me,” Hyland said. “Like I always say, I’m the kid that wants to show the next kid in the city that this can be you in my position. Growing up, I never had that guy that could show me the ropes so I just want to be the guidance for the younger youth and keep leading.”

NBA Rising Stars: Cade Cunningham named MVP to lead Team Barry to win

Cade Cunningham was named MVP of the NBA Rising Stars game to lead Team Barry to the championship and tip off All-Star Weekend.

Detroit Pistons rookie Cade Cunningham on Friday was named the Most Valuable Player of the NBA Rising Stars game to lead Team Barry to the championship and tip off All-Star Weekend from Cleveland, Ohio.

Cunningham recorded five points, including a huge 3-pointer late, three assists and two rebounds in the final game over Team Isiah. He scored a team-high 13 points, six assists and five rebounds to lead Team Barry in the semifinal round versus Team Payton.

Orlando Magic rookie Franz Wagner sent Team Barry to the win after hitting his first free throw to cross the 25-point threshold to win. The teams played to 50 points in the semifinal round and 25 points in the final to commemorate the 75th-anniversary season of the NBA.

Here is how each player and team fared in the competition.

Bones Hyland explains ‘surreal’ feeling of Rising Stars selection

Hyland on Friday called it a surreal feeling to compete in the NBA Rising Stars game at All-Star Weekend.

Denver Nuggets rookie Bones Hyland on Friday called it a surreal feeling to compete in the NBA Rising Stars game at All-Star Weekend in Cleveland, Ohio.

Hyland on Thursday was named as an injury replacement for Sacramento Kings rookie Davion Mitchell in the annual showcase game. He has emerged as a key contributor for the Nuggets this season and was viewed as perhaps the top snub from the initial voting.

The 26th pick is averaging 8.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and two assists in 46 games this season. He leads all rookies in free-throw percentage (88.1) and ranks third in 3-pointers made (79). He has recorded 16 games with 10 or more points, including three games with at least 20 points.

He found out on Wednesday night he would compete in the game.

I get into the locker room and Coach just walked up to me smiling and clapping. He gave me a big hug and congratulated me. (He said): ‘Congratulations, Bones. It was well-deserved. You should have been in it. It was well-deserved for you. I’m so proud of you. Congratulations, you’re going to Cleveland!’

The Nuggets experienced a dramatic ending versus the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday as Monte Morris hit the game-winning shot as time expired. The win was their third straight victory as the team is sixth in the Western Conference heading into the break.

They were in the midst of celebrating the shot by Morris and the victory in the locker room when they started applauding Hyland for the Rising Stars selection, as Hyland recalled on Friday.

That felt great. There are no words to even describe that moment. Just from Monte hitting the game-winner to guys in the locker room throwing water showers, spraying Monte with all of the water. DeMarcus came up and sprayed him with Pedialyte. Them vibes were so immaculate. It was so great and then, out of nowhere, they started pouring water on me as the Rising Star. It was just so fun in the locker room. It is a great team. I love the team.

Hyland will replace Mitchell on Team Payton, which is named for Gary Payton, one of four members of the 75th-anniversary team serving as Rising Stars honorary coaches. Hyland will be teammates with LaMelo Ball and Scottie Barnes among others.

The opportunity to compete against his peers in a showcase game on a national stage will be a big moment for Hyland. The selection for Hyland will be something he remembers for a long time.

“Anything I get recognition of for my name, I’m always proud,” Hyland said. “I don’t care what it is or what accolade it is. I’m always proud because, at the end of the day, so many people want to be in my position and want their name recognized, as well.”

The Rising Stars game will tip off on Friday at 9 p.m. EST on TNT.

Nuggets’ Bones Hyland named as injury replacement for Rising Stars game

Hyland, the 26th pick, is averaging 8.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and two assists in 46 games this season with the Nuggets.

Denver Nuggets rookie Bones Hyland on Thursday was named as an injury replacement for Sacramento Kings rookie Davion Mitchell in the NBA Rising Stars game on Friday.

Mitchell will miss the annual showcase game because of a right-hand injury that caused him to sit out on Wednesday versus the Chicago Bulls. Kings interim head coach Alvin Gentry said the injury is not considered to be serious but it will prevent him from participating, nonetheless.

The ninth pick had turned in a strong run recently with the Kings. He is averaging 16.1 points, 4.6 assists and 2.8 rebounds on 39.1% shooting from 3-point range in 10 games since Jan. 26. With Mitchell injured, the Kings will not be represented at All-Star Weekend.

Hyland is averaging 8.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and two assists in 46 games this season. He leads all rookies in free-throw percentage (88.1) and ranks third in three-pointers made (79). He has recorded 16 games with 10 or more points, including three games with at least 20 points.

He will replace Mitchell on Team Payton, which is named for Gary Payton, one of four members of the 75th-anniversary team serving as Rising Stars honorary coaches. Hyland will be teammates with LaMelo Ball and Scottie Barnes among others.
