Eagles to sit QB Jalen Hurts and other key starters in preseason opener vs. Ravens

With two days of joint practices looming with the Cleveland Browns, the Philadelphia #Eagles will sit their key starters in the preseason opener vs. the Ravens

The Eagles and Ravens are just moments from kicking things off at M&T Bank Stadium, and with two days of joint practices with the Browns looming, Jalen Hurts, and other vital starters won’t see any action.

Over the next 12 days, Philadelphia will host Cleveland for two joint practice sessions, and then Indianapolis for one session before a Thursday night preseason finale.

The decision to rest crucial starters will allow select veterans and 2023 rookies the chance to perform and get on or off the roster bubble with cuts approaching.

7 Eagles with the most to gain in preseason opener vs. Ravens

We’re looking at seven Philadelphia Eagles with the most to gain during the preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens

The Eagles will kick off their preseason against the Ravens on Saturday night, and the contest offers an exciting backdrop for several key roster battles.

Philadelphia is loaded with talent, but critical positions like a linebacker, safety, and running back have camp battles that could take several weeks to sort out.

With kickoff now five and a half hours away, here are seven Eagles with the most to gain against Baltimore.

Why Myles Jack considered going to trade school before signing with Eagles

Myles Jack was almost doing something completely different from playing in the NFL this year.

New Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Myles Jack almost made a drastic career change before signing with the reigning NFC winners.

Jack and former Tennessee Titans linebacker Zach Cunningham signed with the Eagles this week and figure to both play roles on Philly’s defense this fall. However, Jack almost made a different decision for himself this offseason.

Per The Athletic’s Zach Berman, Jack almost considered going to a trade school to learn to be an electrician or a plumber.

While Jack has made multiple NFL stops and likely doesn’t need the money, he said that he likes to stay busy and wanted to make sure he had a backup option in case things didn’t work out with football.

“I like to work. I couldn’t sit at home,” Jack told Berman. “I’ve been blessed to make a lot of money. I could retire and sit at the house. …I want to be innovative. If a zombie apocalypse came, I want to be able to build something.”

Can you blame a guy for wanting to make sure he’s got something else ready to go if the NFL wasn’t to be this fall? Jack is only 27, so he’s got plenty of time left in professional football if he keeps playing at a high level.

However, it does sound like he’s plenty fine with an early football retirement and has plenty he wants to accomplish once his playing days are over.

We just hope, y’know, prepping for a zombie apocalypse will not be on anyone’s list of things to get ready for in the future.

Myles Jack says he considered becoming an electrician before signing with Eagles

Philadelphia’s newest linebacker Myles Jack admits that he considered becoming an electrician to stay busy before signing with the #Eagles

Myles Jack signed $79 million worth of contracts during his 10-year NFL career, with $43 million in guaranteed money earned since being a second-round pick of the Jaguars.

Money wasn’t a concern for Jack during the NFL offseason, but landing with a team or finding an exciting transition from football was at the top of his list of goals.

During his third training camp practice in Philadelphia, the former Pro Bowl linebacker admitted that he considered attending trade school to become an electrician before answering Howie Roseman’s call.

Jack took first-team snaps at Eagles practice hours after getting off the plane, and he’s a candidate to start at linebacker opposite Nakobe Dean.

Jack, 27, has played seven NFL seasons after the Jaguars drafted him out of UCLA.

He flourished despite the injury concerns coming out of college, playing 103 of 114 possible games with 95 career starts.

He played six seasons with Jacksonville and last season with Pittsburgh.

Eagles’ linebacker depth chart gets big boost after the Myles Jack, Zach Cunningham signings

Are the Philadelphia #Eagles done adding talent at the linebacker position after signing Zach Cunningham and Myles Jack?

After finally having decent production at the linebacker spots, Philadelphia is restarting at the position after T.J. Edwards (Bears) and Kyzir White (Cardinals) departed in free agency.

The Eagles entered the offseason with five off-the-ball linebackers, led by second-year defender Nakobe Dean.

Philadelphia added Nicholas Morrow in free agency, and the idea was that GM Howie Roseman could add more depth to the position.

After Dean suffered an ankle injury, Howie Roseman had seen enough, releasing Davion Taylor, and then adding Myles Jack and Zach Cunningham under the guise of adding more competition at the position.

With Philadelphia returning to practice, we’re updating the position group.
